Below the Director of "The North Texas Council on International Visitors" -- NTCIV --   needs a couple volunteers to show a six State Department VIPs around North Texas on the Fourth of July.  Six women from  Kazakhstan are on a State Department tour  and would like to meet some "typical Texans" and experience  a "typical" Independence Day in the USA.

What you decide to do with these guests is up to you.  For example, there are many special events at Dallas Fair Park.  There are many fireworks displays.  You could have a picnic at your home with your other relatives or other friends, or at White Rock Lake, or the Fort Worth Art District or FW Botanical Gardens, etc.

For more info on NTCIV see http://www.ntciv.org/.  (phone (214) 520-0618)

Sorry, Borat won't be accompanying our international visitors from  Kazakhstan  this time.

Best wishes,

Ed:

I know you are traveling a great deal, but I was wondering if the Peace Corps has any plans for the 4th of July in Dallas - perhaps a picnic.  I have a group of 6 women from Kazakhstan coming at that time and they are looking for some sorts of 4th of July activities to participate in.  So I have gone hunting.  Any ideas?

Conrad

Hi Everyone!

Slight change of plans for the Fort Worth Cowtown RPCVs Montly Dinner- since the Love Shack in the Stockyards is open air, and it looks that the rain isn't going to stop anytime soon, we will relocate to the Love Shack on West 7th.  (817 Matisse, Ste 445-Fort Worth TX 76107)  Maybe not as much character- but the burgers are just as good!  See y'all at 7pm!

Third times a charm????

The Love Shack on West 7th closed June 1... so... we'll just head across the parking lot to Chuy's instead.  Sorry for all the changes folks!  (2401 West 7th Street #110, Fort Worth)

Everybody--Following is a message we've received from up in Colorado, which is self-explanatory, and should be a lot of fun.  Note, too, that even if you can't make this event (which is a long way off, still),  they also are assembling a general Honduras RPCV List, for future events and notices, so if you're an Honduras RPCV, they would like to connect with you.

(PS:  The persons assembling the general Honduras RPCV list are Fred Corvi, fcorvi2002@...   and Stephen Phelan stephen.d.phelan@...  )

"A reunion for Honduran RPCVs is being planned for Columbus Day weekend 2013 (October 12-14) and will take place at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park , Colorado (www.ymcarockies.org).  Activities will start in Denver on Friday evening, October 12, followed by two nights in Estes Park .

We are looking to include as many Honduran RPCVs as are interested in the event regardless of where they may currently live – the more the merrier.

To help us plan this event, let us know if you are interested in participating and if you have any suggestions for the reunion.

Please direct your responses to me and I will collect them for the reunion committee.  If you have any information, or if you are interested in helping, please reply to me at:  jonathan.lind@....

From the New Mexico RPCV group

Hello Everyone-
We Philippines RPCVs have been worried about the situation in the Phils.   The BBC did a story a few days ago, with an interview with the president, Benigno Aquino Jr.:

The BBC did a story on the population crisis in the Phils- and the fight between pres. Aquino and the church over birth control.. It's not good at all- very not good. They visited a maternity hospital- total chaos. Aquino mentioned needing 140,000 more classrooms and teachers- the huge numbers of people are having the effect of fewer and fewer kids going to school- meaning they are going backwards. And it appears the country HAS tripled in pop since 1980- from maybe 35 million to 100 million in 30 years.  In a habitable area the size of Indiana. Manila metro area much like London,  30 million+ pop.  The story mentioned the average woman STILL has 11 live births. Median age around 14.   There are millions of abandoned/orphaned children living on the streets- that's never good.  Nothing has changed since 1980 except they now have 3 times more people. They are speeding towards the event horizon of not being able to produce enough food.  They may be forced into a marshal law situation soon.  The BBC said only 7% of the pop have enough food, medical care, etc. There is no middle class.  I would like to go and install PV systems in villages there, but it may be impossible if the general infrastructure is breaking down. No rich country wants to tackle this now- There is no clear solution. The Phils is now far worse off than India ever was.  Should the Catholic church bear any responsibility for this?  In 1948 the country had the best standard of living in SE Asia, as reported in Natl. Geo.    You are the best and brightest when it comes to helping developing countries-  Can you see a clear path for the country to pull out of this nose dive ?

Hello to all RPCVs living in Fort Worth or in areas west or north of FW (Parker County, Wise County, etc.)- anyone living in the 12th district.  We are meeting with a State Dept. employee, RPCV Scott Alexander (Kenya 1997-1999), who is currently working in Representative Kay Granger's office on the evening of Monday, August 13th at Brian & Fran's house at 7:00.  Scott will give a short overview of how Ms. Granger serves as Chair for the appropriations process (the committee which funds Peace Corps), some of the challenges that the foreign affairs budget always faces, and maybe just few observations on how he sees the process working.  He would like to learn from us how we have used our PC experience to impact Fort Worth- really goal #3 of PC- helping Americans know more about the countries we served in.

We would like to invite all RPCVs living in district 12.  Brian & Fran live in the TCU area & will provide some sodas, iced tea, and a few snacks.  I will also bring a couple bottles if wine - guests are also welcome to bring additional snacks or drinks if they like.  Their info is:

Brian Glenn & Fran Huckaby
3400 Harwen Terrace
Fort Worth, TX 76109
Brian's cell phone:  817-501-7090

If you are not sure if you live in the 12th district, you can check the following web site:  http://kaygranger.house.gov/our-district

I hope to see you there!
