UK: Sexualisation of Young People Review

Posted by: "Alisa Klein" alisaklein@...   alisaklein

Hi folks,

If you haven't already seen this, I thought this 104-page report from the UK, Sexualisation of Young People Review, might be of interest to you and/or people with whom you work. It was released on March 3, 2010, by the UK's Home Office (the governmental body that oversees, among other things, the police in the UK). The report is part of the government's strategy to tackle violence against women and girls and "looks at how sexualised images and messages may be affecting the development of children and young people and influencing cultural norms. It also examines the evidence for a link between sexualisation and violence." It can be found at:

http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/documents/Sexualisation-young-people.pdf

From the Executive Summary:

1. Violence against women and girls is unacceptable, whatever the circumstances and whatever the context. In March 2009, the government launched the Together We Can End Violence Against Women and Girls consultation in order to raise awareness of the problem and explore policy proposals and ideas designed to help prevent violence against women and girls. This report forms part of that consultation.

2. This review looks at how sexualised images and messages may be affecting the development of children and young people and influencing cultural norms, and examines the evidence for a link between sexualisation and violence. The decision by the government to commission this review reflects the importance of the issue and the popular perception that young people (and in particular young women and girls) are increasingly being pressured into appearing sexually available. The report looks at examples and the prevalence of sexualisation in culture and proposes mechanisms by which sexualised messages are being internalised and the consequences of these on young people.

3. The world is saturated by more images today than at any other time in our modern history. Behind each of these images lies a message about expectations, values and ideals. Women are revered -- and rewarded -- for their physical attributes and both girls and boys are under pressure to
emulate polarised gender stereotypes from a younger and younger age. The evidence collected in this report suggests these developments are having a profound impact, particularly on girls and young women.

Hope you find it of interest,

Alisa

The Ohio Domestic Violence Network invites you to attend Deconstruct This! Media Literacy for Sexual Violence Prevention, a two-day interactive and hands-on conference presented by the New Mexico Media Literacy Project on June 15-16, 2010 in Columbus Ohio.

Media such as TV, magazines, internet, and radio permeates our everyday lives with messages that influence social and cultural beliefs about sexuality, race, power and gender.  For sexual violence prevention it is critical to develop skills to deconstruct, analyze and confront these messages by becoming empowered pro-active and informed media consumers.  Deconstruct This! is designed to help prevention specialists incorporate the latest research on media literacy into work you are already doing in your community with teens.

Participants of this conference will learn how to:

· Define media literacy and deconstruct a media example

· Identify and define at least 5 techniques of persuasion

· Integrate media literacy concepts into their prevention programs

· Identify racism and sexism in media examples

· Discuss current media policy issues and their impact on issues of racism and sexism

· Understand the links between individual, cultural, institutional, and structural power

· Navigate the DVD-ROM resources (Participants will be given at least 2 FREE electronic resources)

Space is limited to 70 participants so register early!  Up to 12 CEUs will be offered.

Hi Prevention Folks,

The Summer OSVPN Meetings are now scheduled.  The first date will be in Cleveland, Ohio sponsored by the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center and will be held on July 16th from 10 am – 4 pm.

The second date will be in Cincinnati, sponsored by Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio at the First Unitarian Church on July 22nd from 10 am – 4 pm.

At both locations, we would like participants to be able to deliver a brief presentation on the kinds of prevention services each agency offers.

In Cleveland, we will be talking about policy and current issues, and how HB 19 and 10 have played out in our work.  We will also focus on media advocacy, or how communities are effectively engaging the media around IPV, teen dating violence, and sexual assault prevention messages that utilize the principles of primary prevention.

In Cincinnati we will be focusing on volunteerism, and how to attract, train, and maintain volunteers doing prevention work.  We will also have a presentation on effective evaluation.

These topic areas come directly from the needs assessment sponsored by ODVN last year.  There will be time allotted at each meeting to share and ask for ideas.

Please bring your curricula, and/or other items and ideas/concerns you would like to share.

Please RSVP to me by July 1st.  Indicate in either the subject area or body of your message which location you plan to attend.  Thanks so much to those who have already signed up!!!

Lunch will be provided at each location and will be pizza with salad.  There will be vegetarian options.  If you have a special request for dietary reasons, please let me know, and I will try to accommodate your request.  We will have tea, coffee, and water for breakfast, and will try to have bagels and yogurt.

Watch for upcoming emails with more specific location details.

Take Care,

Corina

Hey Everyone,

I am having trouble motivating young people to help us with a youth-led and directed facebook fan page.  Any suggestions out there?  I have called the local career center 3 times and have not gotten any response.  Does your agency have a youth oriented FB fan page?  If so, how did you get youth involved?

Thanks!!!

DISCOMFORT IS NO EXCUSE FOR INJUSTICE

By Wendy Murphy
May 13, 2010

Earlier this week, a female ex-kindergarten teacher from Tennessee named Tonya Craft was on trial for molesting three little girls, including her own daughter. The victims, now between 8 and 9, were between 5 and 6 when they separately reported in vivid detail that Craft committed several sex crimes against them.

The defense claimed the girls were lying – even though two of them had genital injuries that couldn’t otherwise be explained. It's certainly possible for kids to lie, even about abuse, but it's unheard of that three little girls, who had no way of knowing about adult sexual behavior, could dupe experienced prosecutors into bringing completely false charges.

Kids should have such power.

When kids DO lie - they're not good at it. They just don't have enough life experience to add the kind of contextual details that are necessary to make a lie about sexual abuse seem credible to professionals who handle such cases all the time.

Nonetheless, when charges were filed against Craft, the public sentiment was a strange mix of shock and incredulity that a woman could do such things to little girls.

I had a chance to talk about the impact of this cultural bias, from the prosecution's perspective, on NBC's Today Show. I explained that myths about the “types” of people who molest little girls was the best evidence for the defense because jurors can’t conceive of a seemingly heterosexual kindergarten teacher, married mother of two, abusing little girls. If she’s the "type” who presents a danger to children, how can parents possibly determine who the “safe” people are?

This “feel good” bias makes justice for children very difficult to achieve in cases that fall outside the "norm" of what we think child sex crimes look like. We can accept that a creepy guy in smelly clothes might be guilty - and that a nutty female teacher could get the hots for a teenage male student - but a mommy who teaches kindergarten touching five year-old girls!!?? No way.

Who the defendant "seemed" to be was the elephant in the room that the prosecutor had to address head on if he hoped to persuade the jury that the children were credible. Thus, the prosecutor offered up as evidence things about Craft's life that contradicted her image, including that she recently had a lesbian relationship. I told Matt Lauer this information might open the jurors' minds to the possibility that if the accused liked females, then maybe she would also be interested in little girls.

Two gay people emailed me after the show to say that I'd made an unfair connection between being gay and being a molester. I can see their point.

Here's the truth.

Most child molesters are heterosexual. Heterosexual people who molest children will often choose either gender to be their victim but homosexual people who are ALSO child molesters are more likely to choose a same-sex victim.

None of this correlates being gay with being dangerous to kids - and there's been too much bigotry about this issue directed at the gay community primarily because of the Catholic Church crisis where male priests disproportionately targeted male victims. It's too bad the media didn't do a better job showcasing the huge percentage of female victims abused by priests as this might have prevented unfair social myths from developing such strong roots.

Because the jurors in Craft's case would be reluctant to accept the idea that a heterosexual woman might molest female children, the court allowed the jury to hear about Craft’s lesbian interests. This may have been designed in good faith to offset the idea that the accused was only interested in males - but the court's decision was wrongheaded.

When jurors use stereotypes to reach a verdict, the system itself suffers from injustice and judges have a duty to do something corrective. But using one prejudice to fix another isn't helpful.

The court should have insisted that jurors be screened beforehand to weed out those who lacked the ability to believe the allegations COULD be true. (Studies show that at least 10% of molesters are females who hurt girls). The judge also should have instructed the jury, before deliberations, that people are "no more and no less" likely to molest children based on their sexual orientation.

Because the jury was neither screened nor well-instructed, it was no surprise that Craft was acquitted on all counts.

But given the powerful prosecution evidence, it's clear jurors voted to acquit NOT because the case wasn't strong, but because jurors lacked the knowledge and human capacity to accept the ugly reality of female to female sexual abuse of children.

Hi Ohio advocates,

Kathleen Davis of Polaris Project sent this email urging action on this as
soon as possible. All of us are actively working on grant writing and
reporting projects this past May and June along with other pressing tasks.
On behalf of survivors, we need to speak out in encouraging the support
of HB 493 to address the gaps in holding perpetrators of human trafficking
law accountable for this actions. If you could carve some time in your
busy schedule to make few phone call and an email to your legislator, it
will hopefully create a movement in the passage of HB 493.

A direct message from Kathleen:
We need to have folks contact Chairman DeGeeter (House Criminal Justice)
and urge him to support and guide HB493 to the floor. This is where
grassroots efforts are critical now! We need to move HB493 forward.
Thanks!

Action Alert:
http://actioncenter.polarisproject.org/component/content/article/35-action/962-oh-action-alert-hb493

OHIO ACTION ALERT

The Ohio House of Representatives is now considering important legislation
to combat human trafficking. Please join us in taking action to support
HB493 to criminalize human trafficking and punish criminals who exploit
others for profit in Ohio. Ohio is one of only five states without human
trafficking laws!

Human trafficking is the use of force, fraud, or coercion to compel a
person to provide labor, services, or commercial sex against their will.
It is a form of modern-day slavery, and it affects both foreign nationals
and American citizens. The federal government has estimated that
14,500-17,500 foreign nationals are brought into the United States every
year for the purpose of exploitation either for sex or for labor. Experts
estimate that 100,000 American children are victims of prostitution each
year. All of these people are victims of human trafficking.

Human Trafficking in Ohio
A recent study released by the Ohio Attorney General Trafficking in
Persons Research Commission estimates that there are more than 750 foreign
national human trafficking victims who are brought to Ohio for forced
labor or commercial sex. The study also estimates that more than 1, 000
American children between the ages of 12-17 become human trafficking
victims for the purpose of commercial sex in Ohio every year.

Ohio is a transit, destination, and source state for human trafficking
victims. Two recent cases highlight the fact that human trafficking exists
in Ohio. In December 2009, Alan Townsend pled guilty to federal child sex
trafficking charges after luring a 14 year old with promises of a modeling
career. Townsend transported the minor from Ohio to Florida where he
intended to prostitute her for profit. Townsend faces a mandatory minimum
of 15 years to life in prison. Also in December 2009, two Ohio men, Robert
Harris and Richard Johnson, pled guilty to sex trafficking by force and
other prostitution-related crimes after transporting women and children,
including a 16- year-old victim from Ohio, to Maryland for the purpose of
prostitution. The two men were sentenced to 15 years in prison a piece.
A third Ohio man in the case, Craig Allen Corey IIβ€”a private first class
in the Armyβ€”recently pled guilty and was sentenced 17 years in prison.

HB493: To Amend Sections of the Revised Code Relative to Trafficking in
Persons

Representative Kathleen Chandler introduced HB493 to create a new felony
offense of human traffickingβ€”allowing prosecutors to target traffickers
with a stronger law, instead of stitching together other crimes in order
to punish them.

HB493 also:
β€’ Increases penalty of compelling prostitution of minors under 16 to a
first degree felony
β€’ Requires that child victims receive appropriate services
β€’ Requires the posting of the National Human Trafficking Resource
Center
(hotline)
β€’ Requires training of law enforcement
β€’ Click here for more provisions in HB493

HB493 has bipartisan co-sponsorship from 22 representatives: Williams, B.,
Pillich, Newcomb, Lehner, Driehaus, Harris, Letson, Hagan, Lundy,
Skindell, Foley, Yuko, Fende, Winburn, Stewart, DeGeeter, Garland,
Derickson, Harwood, Brown, Pryor, Mallory.

HB493 is a step in the right direction toward comprehensively addressing
human trafficking in Ohio. HB493 will make it clear that modern-day
slavery will not be tolerated in Ohio.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
1. Please take a moment to call your Representative’s office and
urge them to support and vote YES on HB493. If your representative is on
the Criminal Justice Committee, your call is even more critical! Here is
an example of what you can say, but please personalize your message:

β€œHi, my name is [ ], and I am a constituent living at [ ]. I am calling
to urge [ ] to vote YES on anti-human trafficking legislation. HB493
will criminalize trafficking in persons as a 2nd degree felony and define
involuntary servitude in order to comprehensively combat human trafficking
in Ohio. Ohio should join the federal government and 44 other states to
address this serious human rights violation. Will the Representative
support this important legislation?”

2. After you make your call, please follow up with an email - just
click here! Be sure to personalize your message for the greatest impact,
state your message of what you would like them to do, and thank them for
their time.

3. Please take a moment to contact Chairman Timothy J. DeGeeter of
the Criminal Justice Committee. Chairman DeGeeter is able to decide
whether HB493 will advance, so please make a quick call to urge him to
support HB493.

4. Please urge everyone you know to contact their Representatives and
ask them to vote yes on this important human trafficking legislation.

If you should have any questions or have heard back from your senators
about these bills, please email Kathleen Davis atkdavis@...
.
Thank you for taking action to end human trafficking in Ohio!

FWD MSG. From 16 Days…

Please watch this!  It is the most accurate and powerful documentary on sexual assault and violence against Native American women and girls that I have ever seen.  As the U.S. Attorney in South Dakota states, Native American women are the most victimized group in the United States.  It is such a damning indictment to hear a young Native American man say that he learned from his father "Be a man, hit somebody."  Women on Indian reservations are completely powerless and there is near total impunity for the men who commit violence and sexual assault against women, as this documentary so starkly demonstrates.  The most heartbreaking statement of all from another young Native American man is:  "The government has put us into auto-pilot for self-destruction."

It is particularly important for those of us who work on behalf of dv and sexual assault victims to see this to be aware of just how horrendous the reality is for our Native American sisters.

We will provide receipts for those who are able to be reimbursed through their work.

See you in July!!!!

Corina

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lunch will be provided at each location and will be pizza with salad for a $5 donation.  There will be vegetarian options.  If you have a special request for dietary reasons, please let me know, and I will try to accommodate your request.  We will have tea, coffee, and water for breakfast, and some morning snacks.

FYI

CAVP is excited to announce we are hiring for our Director of Advocacy co-director position! Please forward widely. The posting is also attached.

The Colorado Anti-Violence Program (CAVP) is looking for a collectively-minded, intelligent, personable, and highly-motivated person to serve as the Director of Advocacy, one member of a 3 person co-leadership team that replaces the traditional Executive Director role.

CAVP’s shared leadership structure is reflective of our core values of creating a culture of equality within our organization, a necessary step toward building the vibrant and healthy communities we envision, where all people are valued, safe and respected. Working within this model presents unique gifts, opportunities and challenges, and requires that all participants be prepared to grow and to learn wholeheartedly from one another during this immersive process. Major organizational decisions are made collectively by the staff and board of directors, by consensus.

CAVP is a statewide organization grounded deeply in community that works to end violence within and against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people in Colorado. We work within a social justice framework that employs a multi-issue analysis to end violence and oppression against all people. We are the only organization in Colorado focused specifically on ending violence within and against LGBTQ communities.

An ideal candidate for this job will have the ability to think flexibly, to innovate and vision as well as carry out practical tasks, and have a strong interest in pushing the limits of the current anti-violence movement. We are looking for a (potentially emerging) leader in the movement for social justice who has a passion for queer liberation and an interest and ability to work from a heart-centered place with survivors, other staff, and members of the CAVP community.

Over the last few months, CAVP staff, board and key volunteers have been building the foundation for an advocacy program that honors and builds the power of survivors and explores and practices responses to violence outside of existing criminal legal systems including community-based accountability.  In this model, self-determination, safety, and healing for survivors of violence is prioritized along with the accountability and transformation of those that cause harm.

The Director of Advocacy will have a strong focus on building and maintaining relationships, and leading the project of creating infrastructure for this evolving program. Within the next 1-2 years, with the support from other staff, this position will:

·

Complete a shift in the hotline and associated trainings from a victim services framework to one that centers survivor empowerment

·

Participate in developing and implementing grassroots organizing campaigns informed by the experiences of hotline callers

·

Develop programs for survivors, friends, family, and allies

Other key job responsibilities include managing the statewide 24 hour hotline, providing individual advocacy to survivors, managing and building the team of volunteer advocates that staffs the hotline, fundraising, and strategic planning.

Because the duties to be assigned are so varied, this position requires a Co-Director with an unusually diverse set of skills and attributes, with particular emphasis on strong quantitative, analytical, strategic competence, and inclination.  Other desirable qualities include intellectual curiosity and agility, the ability to hold and synthesize multiple perspectives, cross-sectoral and cross-cultural competencies, strong written and verbal communications skills, ability to maintain survivor confidentiality, basic computer savvy, the ability to work alone and in partnership, adaptability, high energy, warmth, humor and a commitment to service.

Applicants should have several years of professional experience, have a minimum of one year of previous experience in (paid or volunteer) survivor advocacy work, be adept at organizing their work and the work of an organization, have practical experience in making things happen, and have the ability to work evenings or weekends with occasional travel.  Preferred qualifications include being bicultural/bilingual in Spanish, familiarity with Colorado community resources and organizations, and experience with community outreach and organizing.

To apply, please answer the

following question in no more than three pages. Your answers should accompany a resume, and will function in lieu of a cover letter.

·

How does your background and identity contribute to your understanding of oppression and privilege?

·

Given CAVP’s leadership structure, why is sharing leadership and power attractive to you based on your work style, experiences and values?

·

Tell us about a moment in your life OR an event in history when a group of people or a community came together to respond to an act of violence or abuse. Why does this event or moment inspire you and how does this influence your vision for social justice?

Send

your complete application to cavpsearch@....

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Deadline:

August 11, 2010.

We will hold first round

interviews on August 21st and second round on August 26th or 27th; however the position will remain open until filled. The salary for this position is $39,000 per year, plus expenses and a generous benefits package.  A flex-time schedule of 40 hours per week, plus periodic travel is required.

People of color, transgender and gender

non-conforming people, people with disabilities, and low-income people are encouraged to apply.

Hey Folks,

I am in the MSW program at the University of Akron, and I have many papers to write.  Broadly, I am interested in violence against women and children, and LGBT populations; youth advocacy around homelessness and/or foster care placement and sexual minority status; and effective treatments and measurement tools with each of these populations. I am wondering if there are burning research questions or literature reviews that would be practical and useful to the intervention and prevention fields.  I am open to suggestions outside of the ones I listed.  My hope is that I can make my time at school be applicable to my current and future work.  Thanks for your thoughts J

"In the Pursuit of Health Equity," a webinar facilitated by Robyn Taylor, MBA

Health Begins Where We Live, Work, and Play!

All Ohioans do not have the opportunity to make the choices that allow them to
live a long, healthy life because of their income, education, or ethnic
background. This results in certain groups experiencing more disease,
disability, and death, which is costly but preventable. The Ohio Department of
Health has devised a way to address this problem through the agency's
grant-making process.

This online webinar will help educate prevention specialists on how to
incorporate health equity and disparities concepts throughout the life cycle of
a grant. The benefits and importance of understanding / identifying the root
causes of health disparities are:

• Participants will learn basic health equity deductive reasoning skills to
understand and identify causes of health disparities;
• Participants will learn to distinguish between health disparity, health equity
and social determinants of health to strengthen proposed program interventions;
• Participants will better understand the link between primary prevention and
health equity; and
• Learn about the availability of tools, RFP planning protocols and resources to
address health inequalities.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Robyn believes that Health Begins Where we Live, Learn, Work and Play. As the
Assistant Health Equity Coordinator for the Ohio Department of Health, Robyn
works across the department and disciplines to discuss health equity promotion
strategies. Robyn works with her colleagues to make sure that Health Disparities
are addressed during planning, implementation and program review. Health is so
much more than just visiting a provider's office, but health begins with the
social conditions to which people live and breathe. Robyn has been in public
service for 15 years, beginning her state service as a social worker with the
Magellan Sex Offender Program at the North Central Correctional Institution in
Marion, Ohio in 1997. While working at NCCI, Robyn also developed general
population educational modules as well surrounding STD and HIV infection. Robyn
is a graduate of the Ohio State University and has worked at the Ohio Department
of Health since 2004.

“In the Pursuit of Health Equity” a webinar facilitated by Robyn Taylor, MBA

Health Begins Where We Live, Work and Play!

All Ohioans do not have the opportunity to make the choices that allow them to live a long, healthy life because of their income, education, or ethnic background.  This results in certain groups experiencing more disease, disability, and death, which is costly but preventable.  The Ohio Department of Health has devised a way to address this problem through the agency’s grant-making process.

This online webinar will help educate prevention specialists on how to incorporate health equity and disparities concepts throughout the life cycle of a grant.  The benefits and importance of understanding / identifying the root causes of health disparities are:

  • Participants will learn basic health equity deductive reasoning skills to understand and identify causes of health disparities;
  • Participants will learn to distinguish between health disparity, health equity and social determinants of health to strengthen proposed program interventions;
  • Participants will better understand the link between primary prevention and health equity; and
  • Learn about the availability of tools, RFP planning protocols and resources to address health inequalities.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Robyn believes that Health Begins Where we Live, Learn, Work and Play.  As the Assistant Health Equity Coordinator for the Ohio Department of Health, Robyn works across the department and disciplines to discuss health equity promotion strategies.  Robyn works with her colleagues to make sure that Health Disparities are addressed during planning, implementation, and program review.  Health is so much more than just visiting a provider’s office, but health begins with the social conditions to which people live and breathe.  Robyn has been in public service for 15 years, beginning her state service as a social worker with the Magellan Sex Offender Program at the North Central Correctional Institution in Marion, Ohio in 1997.  While working at NCCI, Robyn also developed general population educational modules as well surrounding STD and HIV infection.  Robyn is a graduate of the Ohio State University and has worked at the Ohio Department of Health since 2004.

HOW TO START YOUR VERY OWN

TEEN STREET TEAM!!!!

We must look to teenagers as our partners if we are working to create awareness, educate and ultimately stop teen dating violence.  However, teen groups can be difficult to start and sustain.  The Genesis House has created a step by step guide book to help you start your very own Teen Street Team!

This is a guide that will provide you with step-by-step instructions to help and support you in starting your Teen Street Team.  I have included a description of our journey from inception of the idea to becoming a STATEWIDE AWARD WINNING program.

My goal was to create a program guide that could be replicated in any state in any county by any agency regardless of how much funding you do (and in most cases) don't have available.  I have included handouts and paperwork when available so you don't have to spend time re-inventing the wheel and just focus on the teens.

Our AWARD WINNING TEAM has grown to become a staple in the Genesis House prevention efforts, a community wide celebrated program and as permanent clubs in area schools.

TO PURCHASE JUST THE GUIDEBOOK: $60 (PLUS S&H)

TO PURCHASE THE SUPPLIMENTAL GUIDE TO CREATE A "Purple Ribbon Week" FOR SCHOOLS TO GET INVOLVED IN DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH:              $30 (PLUS S&H)

TO HAVE MEG MCINTYRE COME TO PROVIDE TRAINING AND ONSITE SUPPORT IN STARTING YOUR TST:
