11:45            Registration

12:00-12:45   Networking Lunch: (Lunch is provided.  You’ll provide the conversation.)

Our meeting in June resulted in a great list of questions that all sexual violence prevention specialists should ask.  Have lunch and

conversation with your peers concerning critical questions like:

·          What is risk behavior for sexual violence?

·          Whose risks are we focusing on—the potential perpetrator’s or the potential victim’s?

·          How do we define rape?  Is coercion part of this definition?

12:45-1:15  Small Group Share-Out

1:15-2:15   Ensuring Your Program’s Standards While Engaging Community Partners

“What do you mean requiring teacher training and expanding my program to four sessions?  I’m struggling just to get in.”  If you ever had this thought about your sexual violence prevention work, come interact with other OSVPN members to find out what they’ve done to build comprehensive programs.

OSVPN Member Presenter

President, IMPACT Safety, Columbus

2:30-3:45      Fun & Engaging Activities for Use in Your Programs

It’s time for a bit of resource sharing.  All OSVPN meeting participants are asked to bring one engaging activity that you use in the classroom or community.  What’s a fun activity that you use to engage students?  Have you developed or are you using an interactive activity during your programs that is fun for the students and either teaches or reinforces sexual violence prevention concepts?  Need some help incorporating engaging activities in your program?  Let’s learn from each other.

3:45             Evaluations

If you are interested in joining us please RSVP by Friday, August 10th so we know how many lunches to order!

To RSVP:

Email Julianna Nemeth at jnemeth@....  Let me know:

1.     who you are,

2.     what agency you represent,

3.     your phone number and email address,

4.     if you have any dietary restrictions,

5.     and if you need any special accommodations.

Text Box: What to Bring: Please bring an engaging activity that you use during your program, or in the community, that helps teach or reinforce sexual violence prevention skills. Do you have an engaging opening activity to catch students’ attention? Do you use role plays? Have you created a game show that works well? Our hope is that each participant can share one activity that you are using. Please bring a handout that explains how other prevention educators/specialists can replicate the activity in their local community. If you email your activity to HelpLine (jnemeth@helplinedelmor.org) by noon on August 3rd, we can run the copies for the meeting on Tuesday. If you prefer, you can just bring 30 copies of your handout to share with the group. Each participant will be asked to share the activity that they brought.

About OSVPN: OSVPN is a network of sexual assault prevention educators/specialists in the state of Ohio, and others that want to support sexual violence prevention education work.  Originally convened with the help of OCOSA in the summer of 2005, OSVPN is a network of sexual assault prevention educators that want to learn from each other and offer each other peer support.  HelpLine of Delaware and Morrow Counties is now receiving funding through the Ohio Department of Health Rape Prevention VAWA funding to continue the great work of the OSVPN.  Although HelpLine has taken on the responsibility of convening the meetings, these meetings are still for and lead by sexual assault prevention specialists from across the state.  Feel free to join us!

Hope to see you there!

Hey Everyone,

I mentioned a resource yesterday, and I am not sure everyone knows about it.  The California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) has a project called Prevention Connection.  They have started a WIKI project like wikipedia, but for prevention folks, and we can add stuff to it ourselves.  Following is information I took directly from their website, www.preventconnect.org

Prevention Connection: The Violence Against Women Prevention Partnership is a national project of the California Coalition Against Sexual Assault (CALCASA) to conduct web conferences, moderate a ListServ and lead on-line discussions to advance primary prevention of violence against women.

Prevention Connection will explore issues and highlight efforts to:

  • stop violence against women before it starts,
  • engage communities in preventing violence against women, and
  • build upon the strengths of the violence against women movement, public health and other prevention efforts to create social change.

Take Care,

Corina

Please pardon any cross postings.

The Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN) has convened an in house team to assist in efforts to engage men in ending men’s perpetration of sexual, family and intimate partner violence.  By this we mean engaging men is more than having male staff or volunteers, but actively working with men and men’s groups in your community.  It is ODVN’s intention to serve as a resource for local efforts.  As a first step we would like to find out what men’s work is being done throughout Ohio.  With this information we will create a list of those working to engage men.

Please take the time to answer to these 3 short questions with as much or as little detail as you have time to provide.  Send your answers to jille@...

1.      Does your organization engage men in your prevention efforts to end men’s perpetration of sexual, family, and intimate partner violence?

2.      Please provide as much or as little information as you choose about activities to engage men

3.      Are you aware of other organizations or efforts to engage men?  (Please feel free to forward this e-mail to those groups)

4.      What Ohio County/(ies) do you serve?

As we collect this information we will be sending out a short survey monkey (only to the programs who are engaging men) to ensure that we have accurate information about the work local programs are doing.

Thanks for your input.

I know some of you are doing Prevention programs in your local
elementary schools. I was wondering if you could share some
information with me about your program. Do you use a specific
curriculum? How long is your program? What outcomes have you had, etc.
Anything you feel might be beneficial to us in deciding if having a
program in the Elementary schools is worthy of pursuing. Thanks!

Hello again. I'm currently preparing for the upcoming school year.
Going over my program, I feel like I spend all my time doing
activities about the negative aspects of dating. I'd really like to
add some hands-on, active learning to my healthy relationships day.
Does anyone have a great activity they use to help the students
understand what's needed to have a healthy relationship?

A Call to Men
Featuring Tony Porter
Four community programs for
Men, Women, Teens

Tony Porter explores how men and boys are socialized to view women as having
less value than men, as the property of men, and as objects for men. He
dialogs about common male experiences and the uncomfortable choice for men to
either challenge or uphold those views.

Dear Sexual Violence Prevention Specialists,

Please excuse any cross postings.  Please know that we want as many people to fill this out who do this work.  That means anyone and everyone involved in prevention at your agency should complete the below survey.  Please take the time to fill out the survey (link below).

As many of you know, my name is Jill Endres, I am the Sexual Violence Prevention Technical Assistant and Trainer (SVPTAT) at the Ohio Domestic Violence Network (ODVN).  When I first started this position some of you filled out a survey to help define this new role in the state of Ohio.  I have been with ODVN almost a year now and with a new grant year starting would like to know how I am doing, and what I can do to continue to serve as many of your needs as possible.

ODVN’s view of technical assistance is to assist sexual assault prevention programs in developing the knowledge, skills and motivation essential to practicing good prevention.  Ultimately to build capacity and competence so that Ohio Sexual Violence prevention programs are appropriately outfitted for this challenging work.  Just like this year, in 2008 ODVN will have 4 regional meetings and a statewide conference in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Health (ODH).  The results of the survey will help to determine the topics of these events as well as to help ODVN learn how to best assist local programs in their prevention needs.

The Ohio Sexual Violence Prevention Network (OSVPN) is a network of sexual assault prevention specialists in the state of Ohio, and others that want to support sexual violence prevention work.  In the absence of a statewide coalition, Helpline of Delaware and Morrow Counties, Inc. currently receives funds to ensure the continuation of the group.  In an effort to ensure that the work of ODVN’s Sexual Violence Prevention Technical Support and the work of OSVPN are complementary but not overlapping, there are alos questions pertaining to the OSVPN.

Please go to the below link and fill out the survey.  Feel free to add any additional questions and/or comments to the survey.   I know many of you have so much to do, that even taking the time to fill out this short survey may feel like a burden.  Please take the time to do this so your voice gets heard in how I am able assist you in the future, and hopefully help you to feel less overwhelmed by this important work.  Please forward this on to others at your organization who are also doing prevention work.  The survey should take about 15 minutes.  If you get interrupted you will not need to start over, just go to the below link again and it will open to the page you left off at.  The survey will close on December 7th so please try to make time before then to take the survey.  Thanks for all you do to prevent sexual violence.  Click on this link (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=axhqnTq_2fWNJmoN7PzdOHPg_3d_3d) to go to the survey, if the link doesn’t work please cut and paste into your browser.

Sorry for cross postings.

This is a reminder that the survey will end this Friday December 7th.  I know some of you had difficulty, if you did not complete the survey (you would have reached a Thank You page at the end) please consider taking the time now to take the survey all the way through.  There is one question on demographics that seems to not be working properly.  Because of this I am not going to be looking at the results of that particular question, so if your computer won’t let you get past that question you can put 100% in any category and that should allow you to move past that particular question.  Please contact me if that doesn’t work for you.

Thanks to all of you who have already taken the time to take this survey.

Hi OSVPN Members,

I know in the past that this question has come up but I thought I
would throw it out there again...
We are looking for the best way to determine program effectivness.
This is of course a key question asked by funders and we are
constantly trying to determine how we could measure our
effectiveness so we know we are actually preventing sexual abuse
when we go into the classroom.

Also if anyone knows of any national or regional studies that have
been done related to prevention that we can take a look at or if
any other resources exist that offer standards that can be used to
measure outcomes of prevention education programs.

Also if anyone is willing to share thier pre/post tests with me I
would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Thanks for you post Meg!

I know you are not alone in feeling unsure about the best way to determine the effectiveness of your program.  As a TA provider this is something I have been trying to build my capacity on and always willing to help while being upfront with my limited capacity in this area.  I would like to let you and everyone on this list know that ODVN is planning on bringing in Empowerment Evaluators to our annual sexual violence prevention conference and/or the regional meetings.  They will also help to build my capacity so I can provide more assistance in the area of evaluation.

The conference this year will be June 26 & 27 in Columbus

The regional meetings will be:

July 8 – Lima

July 10 – TBA

August 19 – TBA

August 21 – TBA

If anyone is interested in hosting one of the regional meetings please e-mail me (jille@...) off the list.

Thanks for starting this conversation Meg.
