Did any of you make New Years Resolutions that you would care to share? How is it going so far?

For me, I have resolved that I am going to (1) try to stress less over curriculum related situations and (2) to try to get upset less with the kids (which generally is my own frustration that they aren't progressing and completing things at the rate that I want).  How's it going?  I'll let you know at the end of week when we get back into the swing of things.

I use to make resolutions about losing weight, exercising more, or spending less time at the computer.  They don't work out so well.  I thought that this year, I'd take a different approach.

P.S. If you have a question that you would like to suggest for our QOTW, please email it to me at:

QOTW: Let's pretend you could make one wish for your child/ren come true, what would it be?

Happy Monday!  Happy Holidays and Happy New Year's Day!

We had a rather quiet Christmas Day, which was okay.  My mother gave the kids a lot candy and I thought that they were old enough to handle eating a little at a time...but I guess I wrong.  It seems that my oldest son (15) spent the majority of the weekend eating candy and not food, which caught up to him last night at midnight when he began vomiting.  As a teen, he spends quite a bit of his time telling me how grown up he is and how much he doesn't need me anymore....well, that is until he gets sick, of course.  LOL!

Although most homeschoolers will still be on Christmas break, we are resuming today; albeit a little on the light side as we will be sticking with math and language arts primarily.  I hate to fall behind in those areas.

QOTW: What are you doing this year to celebrate a Happy Holiday Season (regardless to what you believe in or celebrate)?

Happy Holidays! It's that time of year where we try to shift our focus onto our loved ones and let the stress of everyday occurrences cease for a day or two.  This being said...What are you doing this year to celebrate a Happy Holiday Season (regardless to what you believe in or celebrate)?

My kids are at the age where they just want money (and I'm okay with that).  They prefer to shop after Christmas and buy when the price goes down and they can get more with their money.  It use to bother me that they preferred money, but now I take the approach that they being rather frugal; and in this economy I can't blame them.  Cooking will be boxed, canned, and thawed--as it stands right now.  Since I made a turkey (with all the fixings from a box or can) the kids have been hinting that I should just finish the year out cooking something for Christmas.  My husband, however, has planned some major building for the couple of days that he is off, and would prefer to have the usual of hotdogs and hamburgers, especially so that I can help him with the building.  He is not a big one to get together and spend it with family outside of our home.  So, we'll have to see how things go.  Tomorrow night is a big Boy Scout Christmas Family Dinner and I'm making (meatless) baked ziti.

I hope that everyone enjoys the Christmas holiday season!

Most Respectfully,
Rebecca Miller

I think everybody's thoughts on this is will definitely be different. My father dropped out of high school when he was in the tenth grade, never homeschooled, never got his GED but he is one of the smartest men I know when it comes to carpentry, mechanics on older vehicles, planting a garden and lots of little everyday things like that and has taught others how to do these things. My mother dropped out of school when she was in the eighth grade, never homeschooled, never got her GED. Doesn't know a whole lot of book learning but is one of the best people I know to counsel others in a gentle and loving manner. Is a terrific cook and has taught others how to cook.
My husband graduated high school and did some college, no degree but has extensive knowledge on knives because that is how he makes a living. Can tell you what kind of tires your cars need and whether they need them or not. Can tell you what kind of paint is good for your house, inside or out, what you need to do to get the surface area ready for the paint because these are things he used to do for a living.
I graduated high school but never went to college. I am an a little above average typist, do ten key fairly well, file papers everyday (for my husband's business) although I have never formally worked as a secretary or taken any type of secretarial courses although I have worked at two different credit unions and can tell you a lot about financial stuff, accts., loans, etc.. I have been working on learning sign language and have come a long ways but still have quite a bit more to go as I want to eventually be an interpreter. I have taught what I know of sign language even though I am not a certified teacher.
I don't know how to do the things my father does, don't know how to do most of the things my husband does, can do some of the things my mother does but I think I am pretty well educated myself although I do have on my agenda to learn Hebrew, Greek, French, Spanish and more sign language. I do know quite a bit of sign language and am picking up more Spanish everyday as my best friend and my sister-in-law are both Mexican and although neither one of them have a formal college education they are doing quite well at teaching me.
I think the question: "What knowledge is essential for a person to be considered educated?" is definitely a broad question as from just reading this e-mail you can see the areas my family is educated in although most of it would not be considered formal education because there are no degrees or certificates in these areas (except my sign language lessons).
My 14 yr. old son is pretty well self-educated in rocks, minerals, and gems so much so that adults ask him for his advice on things in these areas but no certificates for him yet either although he is working on it.
My friend think I am an educated person and are surprised when they learn I have never went to college.
I am very interested to see what everybody else writes for this too.

What is the earliest positive learning experience you can remember with your child/ren? You're first "ah-ha" (they got it; or it worked)

*************************************

For me, I would have to say reading.  (I think because it was it was an "ah-ha" moment for all of us.) I think the coolest moment that we have had was when my kids started to read, and I sat back and thought, "If we can do this, then we can do it all."  It was "ah-ha" they got it; and "ah-ha" I can do this. That was 10 years ago, and my kids are in the 10th grade now still plugging away!

Rebecca

P.S. I went to the store to buy a pre-made turkey and meal so that I wouldn't have to cook (because this year my kids were begging for a "holiday" meal), but I just couldn't get over the prices!  My husband's income has dropped half this year, and I just couldn't justify the cost.  I ended up buying a turkey to make.  But to keep things simple for myself, I used boxed potatoes, canned cranberry, canned green beans, canned gravy, and boxed stuffing.  All of which took less than 30 minutes to put together when the turkey was near complete.  My kids and husband said it was a great meal!  (I think they were just in the holiday mood.)  Next year, back to hamburgers and hotdogs!  Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

QOTW: What are you doing this year to celebrate Thanksgiving
Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm happy to report that my son's surgery last Monday seems to have gone well.  Last year we spent Thanksgiving going crazy trying to control the pain from knee surgery (football injury) and it was two weeks before he was up and walking.  This Thanksgiving, we are happy that he is not having a lot of post-op pain from his shoulder surgery (football again!); and the discomfort that he is having is rather manageable through pain medication.  We are thankful about this.

So it's that time of year where we try to shift our focus on being thankful for things. This being said...What are you doing this year to celebrate Thanksgiving (regardless to what you believe in or celebrate).

(I never think to include my own answers to the QOTW in the email that I send out.  Here's the difficulty that I run into.  I send the QOTW out to almost 200 groups.  I then receive almost 200 responses back, as I have my groups set to individual mail.  Once I send out the QOTW, my internet provider shuts me down for sending out emails for a 24 hour period--I can only send out emails directly through each Yahoo! group....which would take me forever to do one by one.  By the next day, I am busy approving messages/members and forget to send in my own responses.  But today, I remember to include it in the original email!)

For us, the holidays are a no fuss.  My husband works a lot so that I can stay home with the kids...usually six days a week (sometimes seven).  When holidays would approach, and he would have a day to spend with us, I would be in the kitchen cook.  If I wasn't in the kitchen cooking, I was in there cleaning up.  The day that he would be off, I would really see him only at the meal times.  So several years ago, my husband decided that a holiday was a holiday for all of us.  No cooking or cleaning on that day.  We cook hotdogs and hamburgers the day before and we eat them the next day.  We generally spend the day watching movies or TV shows together, while eating popcorn in between.  Sometimes family will stop by on their way to the homes of others.  Both of our parents (and my maternal grandparents) and siblings live either in our county, or in the next county, so they can be seen quite easily or frequently through out the year. We do not go out on holidays, as my husband drives for a living and hates to travel on his day off; plus he wants to spend the time with us since he doesn't see the kids a lot.  Add to this that we live with my parents (to help take care of them), and my husband it when my parents go to my sister's and we have some "just the four of us" in the house time.

This year, however, my kids have been grumbling that they would like a turkey (a Thanksgiving dinner in general).  My grandfather (90 years old) had a major heart attack a couple of weeks ago and my husband doesn't think he will live for another year; although until this heart attack, my grandfather put me to shame: walked at least 5 miles a day and still did push ups and sit ups!  So my husband would like to go and visit my family at my sister's this year "for only an hour."  He has also said that a Thanksgiving dinner would be okay--just as long as I ordered one and didn't spend the morning cooking it--woo! hoo!  So I guess that is how our Thanksgiving will be this year.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Rebecca Miller

Hello,

I run a small business out of my home selling fabrics for vestments - the robes Catholic and Episcopal priests wear.  I am in need of someone who is looking for at-home work making vestment sets.  We would supply the fabric, thread and pattern and would pay $100 for every completed vestment set.  A vestment set usually takes me about 8-10 hours to complete.

I need someone who has their own sewing machine and has experience making their own clothes.  Competent sewing skills are a must.  You also must be a self-starter and have the self discipline to complete a vestment within a one-week time frame.

If you are interested, please contact me at: merriamfive@...

Blessings,
Sue Merriam

Originally, I had curriculum questions set for this week, but I think I am going to go in a different direction and put out a family question:

Babysitter: Where and how did you find your current babysitter? What are some things that you look for in a babysitter?

The scheduled QOTW had been about curriculum and curriculum resources.  I'll leave these on here in case your are past the babysitting situation and would like to respond to this one instead?  If so, please change the subject title so that others can follow the topic thread.

Boxed Curriculum: What do you do when the set assignments seem overwhelming?
                                --or--
Make your own curriculum: What are some of the resources you use/have used when creating a curriculum for your child? Which ones did you find to be the most useful?

Notes:   Looking for a comprehensive program to help you educate your 7th and
8th graders? We are offering a series of seminars for both 7th and
8th graders for the 2007-2008 school year. The seminars will be
offered as a comprehensive course of study for those interested in all
6 courses, and may also be offered as individual seminars (depending
on the number of full-time students).

The classes are one day a week for 30 weeks. They are part of a
national organization called Classical Conversations, which has a
proven track record of enabling parents to offer their children an
excellent classical and highly academic education.

The 7th Grade seminars are: Latin, Creating Writing (fall semester),
Newbury Literature (winter semester), Geography, Nature Study, Clear
Reasoning and Saxon Math.

The 8th Grade seminars are: Latin, Newbury Literature (fall
semester), Short Stories (winter semester), History of Science (fall
semester), Origins (winter semester), Introductory and Intermediate
Logic, Current Events (fall semester) and Mock Trial (winter semester)
– which are both debate courses -- and Saxon Math.

I forgot to mention that I started a national online support group that is all-inclusive for those homeschooling and suffering from chronic illnesses.  When I sent out a notice last week about the groups that I was aware of, someone mentioned that they were interested in an all-inclusive group.  I don't know if there is one, so I started one.

I am not going to be able to post the QOTW tomorrow, so I am sending it out today.

This is not to start a debate as to whether Halloween is okay or not; nor is to debate that doing an alternative to Halloween is right or wrong.

What are your kids (and yourself if dressing up) wearing October 31st? If not celebrating what do you do that night to avoid the the whole thing?  Or do you do an alternative to dressing up?

know a good OB Doctor or Midwife that will do a VBAC after
two C-Sections.

Good morning everyone.  It's time for our next QOTW. This week's scheduled QOTW was relatively close to the question of last week, so I am going to change it to something different.

Flu Season and Cabin Fever: How are you coping with the flu season? What do you do with the kids whenever you have to deal with cabin fever?

Last week's QOTW was a great success in many of the groups.  There were various discussions, and lead off topics, and, well, just some great thought that went into many of the responses that came out.  (Too bad there not just one large forum where all of these great minds could have came together and expressed these thoughts...I could only imagine how wonderful that would have been!)  I wish that I had the room to share each and every response with all with you, but I don't.  So I did the next best thing that I could think of: I put together some various responses into a PDF file and am attaching them to this so that you can read them at your leisure, should you be interested to do so.

And before I go, I would also like to share with you two groups that I have been made aware of that may be of interest for some of our members that suffer from chronic illnesses and are trying to continue with homeschooling:

As usual, I hope you all have a great homeschooling week.
