Hi Everyone

First a thank you to Matthew Hocker for posting to Trains-n-Town. I hope you
can make the event.

Cale are you still interested in coming?

--

I've left space on the NELUG layout for Matt in hopes that he will be able to
make it. The Japanese house is near a few Victorian houses and one modern style
house. The Civil war scene is in it's own space next to my small river. You
can also expand into any of the green baseplates near your MOCs if you want.

The design is never final so if any of you would like to display something on
our layout, please feel free.

The NELUG layout can be viewed here:

We did discuss train layouts for both Brickworld and Brickfair at the March
meeting. I can still contribute to both if we do both...

I haven't decided yet which MOCs I want to bring to Brickworld and which I'll
leave behind. I guess I should decide soon. How much space will you have, KC?
I could easily fill a lot of vehicle space with some of my stuff (my Fighting
for Life diorama is pretty large, for example), but I don't want to be a hog.

As for non-Lego stuff, I'm hoping there will be room for a backpack (full of
in-flight entertainment) at my feet, and then for clothing and stuff I'll
probably use a duffel bag that's 2 or 3 cubic feet.

Finally, I'll confirm that my house is available for a meeting on Saturday, if
people want to do that... Would it make sense to do the June meeting at Mike's
if that's going to be our launchpad for Brickworld the next week? Or maybe it
doesn't matter.

Wherever we do the meeting this week, I'll have a big new (castle-themed) MOC to
show off.

I think we should have something for both summer events.  But I wouldn't know how much we can take, as a group, to Brickworld without everyone presenting some idea of how big each person's respective boxes will be.

Packing MOCs for a trip:  Use boxes or bins!  Cale has some very good examples of packing things well in boxes and bins.  You want to make sure as much as possible of your MOC is securely held in place.  Maybe shirts and socks could be used to fill in spaces.  These boxes will be bounced down the road for several hours - 12 hours to Chicago.  (Take pictures if you must to help you put pieces back on.)  Your boxes and bins must be able to handle some weight on top.

I won't be bringing much to Brickworld.  This will leave more room for others.  Furthermore, I probably won't be bringing much more back with me.  (Shocking!)

I'm sure there will be room for entertainment gear plus duffels or other carriers for clothing.  (But I'm hoping to keep the car firmly on the ground...)  As for entertainment, my car has a 6-disc CD changer.  So bring music or you may have to put up with me singing.

I'm looking forward to seeing Chris' new castle MOC.  For that reason I think we should have the next meeting at Chris' house this Saturday (just a few days away).  Then we can figure out where we want to have the next meeting.

Who will be at the meeting this Saturday?  (I will be there.)

Michael

Not sure of my weekend plans yet, but if I'm free I'll be there (if I can find
my way back to Chris' house or wherever it is). Just give me a time and an
address and I'll do what I can. I might even bring a MOC or two!

Not sure if I will make it. If I get accept into Hot Import Nights in New Jersey I will be spending the entire weekend finishing up loose ends on my car. If I don't get in(I should know before saturday) I will be there. I have figured out what all is going and will box it up. Whoever is registering it for me at the show, all I ask is that you put the name of the owner as my online profile "Eviljack".  I have 4 complete and 1 I am hoping to complete in time for Brick world.

My sister is graduating from Mount Aloysius College this weekend, so I will be
in Cresson, PA all day Saturday.

As far as Cons, Michelle and I have been working on plans to go to BrickCon in
Seattle. I have a few Lego friends that live on the West coast, so I thought it
was time to pack up and go visit them.

We wanted to go last year but couldn't make it. This year things fell into
place and we already booked our plane tickets. Therefore you will not see us at
BrickFair or BrickWorld.

I'm not even considering taking any MOC's to BrickCon since we will have to
travel by plane, but I am making sure to leave room to bring stuff back :-D

I don't think I'll be able to make it this weekend but I'll post all the
relevant info I have on Brickworld (including how much stuff I may take)

Well, yeah, but that's not the part of the weekend that determines whether or

Here is the current layout plan for the group train layout at Brickworld.

Layout Plan

PennLUG's area is in blue. The grid lines represent 32 x 32 stud baseplates. You guys can fill as much or as little of the space as needed. Any open space I can fill with trains.

As for what I'll be taking. That's a tough one. There is a lot I would like to take but I don't want crowd others out. KC mentioned previously that she could take some things out for us. Is that still something you would be willing to do?

Well that didn't work the way it was so posed to. Lets see if it will work as an attachment.

I can't tell what are the gridlines. What are the dimensions of the blue area,
in 32x32s?

We are not going to be able to make it to the meeting this weekend. We have a
wicked combination of finals, athletics, and mother's day celebrations...

I originally thought I could go to Chicago, but due to recent family and work
obligations, I cannot make it to BrickWorld... I'm really disappointed, but we
are pressing on and looking forward to seeing everyone in June right before you
guys head out on the road.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and is safe making their way to the meeting.

I'll be there.  Anyone care to car-pool with me to the meeting from the greater Harrisburg area?  I might also be able to stop in Lancaster, if anyone wants to car-pool from there.

Too bad you won't be able to make it to Chicago.  Hopefully you both will be able to go to BrickFair in August.

However, this now means I have room for another person for the trip to Chicago.  Who is going to join us?

At this time, I'm planning to attend, but that depends on how much sleep I get
tonight and what I get done. Mike, I'd be up for carpooling from Hbg- could you
give me a call at 652-2434?

Regrets! I won't be able to make it again this time. I have a
previous engagement -- I'm helping run the BERG-O-PALOOZA 2009
fundraiser for the Nick Berg Memorial Fund, noon to 15:00, in West
Chester.

I just got a conformation that we have 1 table 30 inches by 6 feet that is reserved for PennLug under my name, so we have space for our MOCs once we get there, the trick is just how much space to transport them. So, Chris, Mike, and Cale, go ahead and register all your MOCs so you all get nice little description cards for them. I would also be glad to take the 3 microscale things to Brickworld, so if you other guys want them, or something else small registered, just send me what you want the cards to say, and I will preregister them, and they are small enuf that I can squeeze them into the car if you bring them to the June meeting.  Plus, we should register the church/graveyard so it gets a card too, even tho it will be on the train table, and not the PennLUG table.KC

If you haven't been paying attention LEGO has just announced a sweet new set.

#10196 Grand Carousel

This one looks awesome and is pushing me to modify my Ferris Wheel for mini fig use and create a nice carnival scene.

I'm also now 95% convinced that 75% of the posters on Eurobricks are morons. So far I've read complaints of

It's over sized.

You have to be kidding me. I've seen Carousels that would dwarf this in real life. If this were a real carousel it would be the kind you'd find at your local carnival. I would hardly call that over sized.

It's ugly.

I think it captures the colorful, almost gaudy amusement ride look perfectly and looks quite nice.

The mini figs are boring.

And if they were crazy designs you'd probably be complaining that you can't use them because they too unbelievable.

It costs to much.

It's a 3,263 piece set and includes a motor and sound brick. It may not be cheap at $249.99 but I wouldn't say it's over priced.

The brick built horses are lame. They should have used mini fig horses.

For a brick built horse I think they look pretty good and there are probably practical reasons why LEGO went that rout.

The motor placement is ugly.

It may be ugly but it also looks fairly simple which is great for the not so mechanical/technical minded AFOLs to deal with. Those with more skills should be able to easily modify it to look better. It's LEGO people. If you don't like it you can build it your way.

No brick built roof.

I'm reasonably certain that most carousels (or at least those that travel from fair to fair) have canvas roofs. Have these people even seen a real carousel?

I'll stop ranting now. I personally am looking forward to this set and hope LEGO keeps on their current track of releasing great sets. Lets never return to the dark days of Town Jr.

1. Toys 'R' Us
Sun 17 - Sat 23 May
25% off Bionicle, Indiana Jones, Power Miners

2. You may want to check your local Kmart. Mine was running an
unadvertised 20%-more-off-already-clearance sale on certain building
sets, including Magnetix and certain LEGO. I found the #4998 Creator
Stegosaurus (731 pcs), SRP $50, marked down to $17.

Clearance toy items tend to be on the upper shelf.

Correction upon checking in person: it's 25% off one *specific* set in
each of those lines. The fine print in the circular ("More Indiana
Jones, Power Miners, and Bionicle LEGO sets on sale in-store!") is
inaccurate. The remaining sale items were 10% off all Bionicle; the
other two lines had no additional posted reduced items. Usually these
TRU sales are wider.

The three items, with prices as SRP/TRU/Sale, are:

Bionicle 8943/014193 Axalara T9, $80/80/60
Indiana Jones 7683/185643 Fight on the Flying Wing, $50/50/37.49
Power Miners 8961/089355 Crystal Sweeper, $70/75/56.24

That sale was at the East Goshen (19380) Kmart. While shopping today
(Sunday) I check further, and there was no sale at the Exton (19341)
store.
