Persian Arts Festival (PAF) has successfully revived Shab-e She'r, A Night of
(Persian) Poetry, at the Bowery Poetry Club (BPC) but with a modern, new
generational spin. The program has made its comeback and expanded what tends to
be a very classical Persian tradition to feature modern works of literature,
ranging from fictional novels to memoirs. Entering into its third season, PAF
and BPC continue to host readings of well-established and emerging authors who
are of Persian descent or specialize in Persian literature. Readers have
included Nahid Rachlin, Manijeh Nasrabadi and Joe Martin to name a few.

Hafez Nazeri: The New Face of Iran Premieres "Rumi Symphony Project: Cycle One"

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 8:00PM

An East/West musical dialogue featuring Hafez Nazeri and his legendary father,
Shahram Nazeri, with an international all-star ensemble at Carnegie Hall.

The Nazeri Music Foundation debuts the world premiere of the "Rumi Symphony
Project: Cycle One" this fall. The performance entitled "Iranian Sounds of
Peace" will be presented by NMF in association with Absolutely Live
Entertainment, Asia Society and Persian Arts Festival at Carnegie Hall on
Saturday, November 14 at 8:00 pm. "Iranian Sounds of Peace" is the first Iranian
headlining event at this revered venue.

The works to be performed are composed by 29-year-old Hafez Nazeri, Iran's most
influential young composer and mark a new chapter in integrating Middle Eastern
and Western traditions through the music of both cultures. Nazeri describes the
concept and philosophy behind this opus as "a musical discourse to promote world
peace."

Hafez explains that his goal is to be the new face of Iran in the west and the
voice of a new and cosmopolitan generation. His hope is to portray the true
essence of Iran through his country's musical culture. "At a time when all that
we hear about Iran is filtered through headlines of intolerance, chaos, and
violence, it is important to portray a 7,000 year cultural history with its
deeply poetic and artistic mystical tradition, explains Nazeri.

Together with his internationally acclaimed father, Shahram Nazeri – dubbed the
"Iranian Pavarotti" and the first to set Rumi's poetry to music over 40 years
ago – the Nazeri's will continue their legacy of expanding the definition of
Persian music with the "Rumi Symphony Project: Cycle One."

Musicians joining Hafez Nazeri ("Hafez" setar/vocals) and Shahram Nazeri
(vocals) are: Artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: Paul
Neubauer, viola; Ida Kavafian, viola and Fred Sherry, cello; in addition to Matt
Haimovitz, cello; Tim Cobb, double bass; and Hussein Zahawy, percussion.

Nazeri's music captures and preserves the essence and elemental structures of
Persian music, while embracing new ideas developed out of Western Classical
music such as orchestration, harmony, rhythmic patterns and melodic forms. The
music's broad accessibility opens the cultural dialogue to new listeners
worldwide, and matches the transcendent tone of Rumi's Sufi poetry, transposed
into the context of a new age.

Not only is Hafez Nazeri the composer of the work but he will also sing and play
the new instrument he has created based on the traditional setar. The instrument
is named "Hafez," referring to the composer and his namesake, the great 13th
century mystic poet. The "Hafez" extends the range of the setar by incorporating
two additional low strings to craft greater melodic and harmonic range – making
it the first new Iranian instrument developed in modern times.

Tickets for Carnegie Hall at $30, $45, $60, $90, $140, $180 and $350, are on
sale Tuesday, July 14 at carnegiehall.org, by calling Carnegie Charge at

The NYU Persian Cultural Society cordially invites you to a private evening with Hafez Nazeri. One of the country's most influential young composers will introduce his music blending Eastern and Western motifs to create a new and undefined genre of Classical music. Hafez will meet students, give a brief performance followed by a question and answer period.
Tuesday, November 10, 2009
7:00pm - 10:00pm
Rosenthal Pavilion 10th Floor
60 Washington Square South
COMPLIMENTARY with light refreshments
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=187312316084&index=1
Hafez Nazeri, together with his internationally acclaimed father, Shahram Nazeri dubbed the "Iranian Pavarotti" and the first to set Rumi's poetry to music over 40 years ago - continue their legacy of expanding the definition of Persian music with a performance entitled "Iranian Sounds of Peace".

Premiering in New York City's Carnegie Hall on Saturday, November 14, this will be the first Iranian headlining event at this revered venue. Not only is Hafez Nazeri the composer of the music to be performed, but he will also sing and play the new instrument he has created based on the traditional setar. The instrument is named "Hafez," referring to the composer and his namesake, the great 13th century mystic poet. The "Hafez" extends the range of the setar by incorporating two additional low strings to craft greater melodic and harmonic range making it the first new Iranian instrument developed in modern times.

Nahid Rachlin: Discussion and Reading from PERSIAN GIRLS,
Thursday, November 12, 4:15 PM
Wellesley College
106 Central Street, Wellesley, MA 02481
Newhouse Center for the Humanities
Phone: 781-283-1000

Excerpts from Reviews of PERSIAN GIRLS:
NPR: The World
Selected by Christopher Merrill, the Director of Iowa International Writing
Program as one of the best four books of 2006. "If you want to know what it was
like to grow up in Iran this is the book to read. Rachlin, the author of five
previous works of fiction, including the much acclaimed Foreigner, begins her
story at the age of nine, when she was taken away from the only mother she had
ever known—her aunt, as it happens—and returned to a family in which the
prospects of her becoming a writer were, at best, dim. But her portrait of the
artist in an Islamic country on the verge of dramatic change is filled with
light."

Time:
“Through the touching, tragic story of two sisters, Persian Girls unfolds the
entire drama of modern Iran. It’s a beautiful, harrowing memoir of the cruelty
of men toward women, and it paints the exotic scents and traditions of Tehran
with the delicacy of a great novel. If you want to understand Iran, read Nahid
Rachlin.”—Matt Beynon Rees
