Please find attached the final media statement regarding the postponement of the event.
This will go out next week from Roy (roy i'll give you the instructions separately).
This statement will only be sent to the two journalists who have been contacting Roy regarding the event. Subsequently, it will also be used if any other journalists contact Roy.
This should ideally be sent out on Sunday evening. This is to help minimize the chances that it will be covered.
Thanks
Andrew

Media Statement : Postponement of Gay Pride Event
The gay pride event previously scheduled to take place at HongLimPark on the 15th of November has been postponed to early 2009.
Since the announcement and subsequent extensive media coverage, I have received many expressions of interest from members of the community. In light of this, I am pleased to announce that the 15th November event will be postponed to a later date to ensure that all interested parties; straight, gay and queer, have the opportunity to participate in this landmark occasion.
Details of the event are being formalized, and further information will be released at a later date.
Hi Andy,
Thanks for drafting the media statement.
Does anyone else have any comments?
I'm fine with sending it out as it is.
Ciao,
Roy.

Hello everyone,
Would you prefer to have our second meeting on 1 Nov 08 or 8 Nov 08?
Both are Saturdays.
I think we should hold it at DYMK again. They really give great value
for money on their fruit juices.
I'll notify Eileena of PPC and DYMK's management once we decide on the
date.
15 Nov is drawing awfully close, so we'd better decide soon what press
release to send out. It would be terribly embarrassing if people turn
up and encounter a no-show.
Roy.
Hello everyone,
Just to keep you informed, I have just sent out the media release
drafted by Andrew Wong to The Straits Times, Trevvy and a German
journalist named Michael Lenz.
I don't have the e-mail address of Andre Yeo of The New Paper but I
have asked Jean Chong of Sayoni and PLU to forward him the statement
on my behalf.
Cheers,
Roy.
Hey guys,
Just a few minutes after I sent out the press release, Kor Kian Beng
of The Straits Times called my up on my handphone saying that he has
a lot of questions and would like to write another article on the event.
I told him that I would henceforth only be replying to him via
official press releases, as suggested by Andrew and Stuart.
He will be submitting his questions to me via e-mail, but
off-the-cuff, he wanted to know some of the names of the people who
will be involved in our newer, bigger event next year and other
pertinent details.
When I receive his e-mail, I shall post it on this newslist for Andrew
to draft a reply or to just ignore his request until we are ready.
Thanks,
Roy.
Hi all,
As far as I know, this is the only website which maintains a calendar
of all the registered protests, demonstrations and
exhibitions/performances at Hong Lim Park.
The blog is maintained by a chap who goes by the moniker of Ah Hong -
short for The Hong Lim Park Gardener.
He's doing society quite a good service because this information is
not even provided by the National Parks Board.
Here's the URL:
http://letsgotospeakerscorner.blogspot.com/
Cheers,
Roy.
Kor Kian Beng of The Straits Times phoned me a second time to seek
further clarification on the words we used in Andrew's press statement.
He would like to speak directly with Andrew because he says that the
information we provided is insufficient for an article and too skimpy
to satisfy the public's curiosity and questions regarding the event.
He says the public would especially like to know more details about
why the event was postponed, what the estimated turnout will be,
whether it will still be a pride march and whether there will be any
participation by foreigners.

This is good. The idea is for them not to have enough material for
a story. Would prefer for this to fade away. We are not ready to announce any
details yet – as per our meetings and consensus, we will stick to our release
schedule, which I will circulate shortly.
No need to engage him any further. Our media statement is final.

lol he isn't supposed to know that someone else wrote it.
At this stage, I believe that you should remain the only person in contact with him.
I think that a proper response at this stage should be,
-----------
Dear Mr. Kor,
Thank you for your email and interest.
I currently do not have any additional information to share at this point.
However, I will like to thank you for your continued support of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (GLBTI) community in Singapore.
Kind regards

Roy: Don't send this out until Stuart has had a chance to comment.
Also, I will like to reiterate that we do NOT want any media coverage at this point. So please do not feel like you have to provide more information, but also please remain polite.
The general consensus is to ensure that this remains a non-issue from now until the time we are ready to speak.
Please do not provide him with the names of anyone else at this stage.

Here's the article from the Straits Times for your reference. It is a flavorable piece of coverage.
I wish it was that easy to get coverage for my clients....
I do recommend dropping a note to Kian Beng for his interest and coverage, and to say that the organizers will let him know once more information is available.

Gay protest postponed
Speakers' Corner event on Nov 15 postponed to cater to strong response
By Kor Kian Beng
SINGAPORE's first outdoor gay protest at Speakers' Corner in Hong Lim Park on Nov 15 has been postponed to early next year.
Organiser Roy Tan, 50, a Singaporean who initiated the event, yesterday cited the overwhelming response from the gay community as a key reason for the date change.
The event was being postponed 'to ensure that all interested parties - straight, gay and queer - have the opportunity to participate in this landmark occasion', he said in a statement e-mailed to the media.
Many members of the gay community have expressed interest in taking part, he told The Straits Times when contacted.
A number of those who are backing the event also want to help him organise it, said Mr Tan, who works in the health-care industry.
An organising committee has now been set up.
Said Mr Tan: 'We're postponing it so we can have more time to organise a better event.'
He declined to comment on a new date, the number of interested participants and organisers, and whether there would be changes to the programme.
More details will be released later, he said.
Mr Tan registered with the National Parks Board (NParks) in September to stage the Nov 15 event.
He will now let the Nov 15 date lapse and make a fresh application closer to the new date.
When he first registered to stage the event, which he described as a GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transsexual) pride parade, he said it would feature speeches on gay rights.
Participants would march around the park with placards to protest against Section 377A of the Penal Code, which criminalises homosexual sex. There was also to be a public forum on the difficulties that gay Singaporeans here face.
Mr Tan said he was keeping the event as a Singaporeans-only activity. This was to avoid having to apply for a police permit, which is required if foreigners were to speak or participate in or organise activities at the park.
With the Government moving to relax the rules at Speakers' Corner as of Sept 1, applicants need only register online with NParks before they speak or stage a demonstration.
But they have to state the topic of their speech or demonstration, as issues such as race and religion remain out of bounds.

Hi everyone
My bad, I wasn't able to get the www.pink.sg domain in time - someone
else got it yesterday.
Is everyone ok with PinkDot.Sg as an alternative?

Hi everyone
My bad, I wasn't able to get the www.pink.sg domain in time - someone else got it yesterday.
I cannot imagine why a political journalist will want to give "continued support" to the LGBTI community, except that the community holds great promise to provide exciting news and controversy for him to write about for the next 20 years.
> off-the-cuff, he wanted to know some of the names of the people who will be involved in our newer, bigger event next year and other pertinent details.
The political journo knows the key to getting reader's attention is always: who is involved.
The impression that the event will be larger - that itself is very news-worthy and gives plenty of room for the imagination.
> he has a lot of questions and would like to write another article on the event
Political journos have to generate content to publish. Conflicts and controversy is best.
Strangely, he cannot imagine any issues that LGBT in general face in Singapore (apart from s377A) to pose a politcal question to you yet. Is he in touch with the ground? Are we?
> He would like to speak directly with Andrew because he says that the information we provided is insufficient for an article and too skimpy to satisfy the public's curiosity and questions regarding the event.
It is in the interest of the paper to satisfy public's curiosity. It is not ours.
The fact that, with little info and much recycling, he could produce an article is sign that he cannot feel the pulse of the community for any reason for "protest". He needs to stir the anti-gay camp more. Their issues are right there waiting, all the time.
> He says the public would especially like to know more details about why the event was postponed, what the estimated turnout will be, whether it will still be a pride march and whether there will be any participation by foreigners.
Why was it postponed? I asked that before. I don't think it is postponed. There is no march, no demonstration, no protest - as far as I can perceive right now.
(Although I can think of a few reasons to have those. Such as demanding a public apology by the PM for allowing lethal hate-crime against LGBT to happen here.)
Estimated turnout: we should have a number ready soon.
Pride march or not pride march: too bad we did not prepare to give a firm "no". The public hunger for a visual spectacle shall continue to hang in the air. Free shows never fail to excite everyone.
Participation by foreigners: these days anything about foreigners will stir up heated opposing views in any article about Singapore's domestic issues. Check out the papers for the last 12 months.
He is more interested in the form than the issue.
If you take a closer look at ST Political Editor Chua Lee Hoong's piece on 1 Nov, you will see that political journalists/editors are ST are more interested about what can stir up conflict, confrontation, controversy and readers' interests (i.e. selling more copies of the paper) than the issues themselves. They are also more concerned about who (organisers, participants) is involved.
"Read ST today...On a GLBT pride parade at speakers corner by Nov 15 postponed due to high participation! looks cool!" [emphasis mine]

Headline:
Singapore's first gay protest postponed - What could be the reason?
First paragraph:
The protest and demonstration scheduled to be held on Nov 15 has been postponed to next year, and the reason for postponement is not what we normally imagine - that it comes from external pressures. The reason, as reported by their local paper The Straits Times, is that too many people want to participate.

Hi Roy,
lol he isn't supposed to know that someone else wrote it.
Roy Tan

Roy: Don't send this out until Stuart has had a chance to comment.
Also, I will like to reiterate that we do NOT want any media coverage at this point. So please do not feel like you have to provide more information, but also please remain polite.
The general consensus is to ensure that this remains a non-issue from now until the time we are ready to speak.
Please do not provide him with the names of anyone else at this stage.

Kor Kian Beng of The Straits Times phoned me a second time to seek further clarification on the words we used in Andrew's press statement.
He would like to speak directly with Andrew because he says that the information we provided is insufficient for an article and too skimpy to satisfy the public's curiosity and questions regarding the event.
He says the public would especially like to know more details about why the event was postponed, what the estimated turnout will be, whether it will still be a pride march and whether there will be any participation by foreigners.
Andy, if you would like to communicate directly with Kian Beng, here are his contact particulars:

Thanks for trying, Stuart.
I guess we have to make do with PinkDot.sg, unless someone has a
better suggestion.
What about PinkDotSg.com?
Roy.
Those were great links you provided, Lip Sin, especially the AiBai one.
It seems that the international gay media are speculating on the
changes...which may be a good thing because it generates curiosity,
buzz and expectation.
How do I change the newslist's settings to make it more private?
I can't find any options for the moderator to do this.
Could it be that once you start the newslist and set the privacy
characteristics, there's no turning back without deleting the entire
group?
Roy.

As for project title, PinkDot@SG sticks quite well. The @ is a figurative representation of how the "dot" will be formed. In the logo, don't forget to add some elements of rainbow.

I tried it.
It doesn't work.
Roy.
I met Roy a few weeks back & found out that the whole event will just be the formation of the spiral dot.
Will this simple act generate interest among the media industry? From what I read in the papers, there seems to be an anticipation & high expectation of what the GLBTQi community will come up with. With the highly contested 377A debate last year, will there be a more profound message to be conveyed?
How will it stand out as a GLBTQi event? From what I understand, the colour pink is commonly associated with the breast awareness campaign worldwide.
What do we hope to achieve through this project?
For audiences who have no intention or are unable to participate in the, how do we generate interest among them & make them feel being part of the project.
Don’t be mistaken.I love the idea about the pink dot. What I am concern is the view of general public & the media & the impact on them
It reminds me of the movie “12 Lotus”.With the highly-acclaimed success of “881”, everyone has high expectation about this movie. But it bombed at the box office. It was reported the film could not recover the cost of making it.

Don't worry Justin.
A core group of very committed and experienced people who are
specialists in their field are working hard to make the project a success.
Just wait for further announcements.
