PolishMass is a Yahoo! group focused on Polish genealogy in Massachusetts.
This group aims to facilitate communication among people researching Polish Catholic ancestry and immigration to Massachusetts. We define "Polish ancestry" as embracing family roots beyond the boundaries of today's Poland to include origins in today's Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine, and any other countries where recent generations of Poles may have settled as a result of war, deportation, or other circumstances before settling in Massachusetts.
According to U.S. Census 2000, Massachusetts ranks 10th among the 50 states in numbers of Poles and Polish Americans, with a total of 323,210. It is the only New England state in the top 10. It is significantly smaller in area than the other nine. More than half of the Polish Roman Catholic parishes established in New England over the past 120 years were founded in Massachusetts.
We welcome messages in either English or Polish, and encourage members to assist each other with translations as needed. The rules for this group are simple, and intended to help members maintain a focus on Polish genealogy and a general spirit of mutual respect, courtesy, and cooperation.
Membership is by approval of the moderator, rather than openly public, to ensure that all participants share the group's focus on Polish genealogy related to Massachusetts. Interested persons are invited to e-mail the moderator, identify themselves, and briefly explain their interest in participating.
Once approved by the moderator, new members are asked, in a brief e-mail to the group, to introduce themselves by name and location, with some basic info about their Polish family roots in Massachusetts. This will help members discover possible connections in their areas of interest, e.g., Polish villages of origin, cities/towns of settlement in Massachusetts, family surnames.
