I gave Mike and readers of our CtH newsletter the wrong date for this
month's Vancouver potluck. It was the other day, not this Sat. May's
date and future dates are posted on www.rawportland.org by the
organizers, who always have the correct date!

Subject: "Living Foods" Trademarked by Ann Wigmore Institute?
cloudriver
Send Email Send Email

[I am forwarding this important message. Annette]

An open letter to the Raw and Living Foods Movement
by Brenda Cobb, author, and founder of Living Foods Institute

I am writing you to ask for your help in reference to a lawsuit that
the Ann Wigmore Foundation, Inc. (New Mexico and Puerto Rico) has
filed against me for using the terms "living foods" and "living foods
lifestyle" and for teaching information about "living foods" and the
"living foods lifestyle." They claim that the terms or phrases "living
foods" and "the living foods lifestyle" are their property with a
registered trademark and only they have the right to use them.

My first book is called "The Living Foods Lifestyle." It is my story
of how I healed breast and cervical cancer using the principles of
this healthy lifestyle. I was trained by Shu Chen in February 1999,
then director of the Ann Wigmore Institute in New Mexico, who has
since resigned. Shu encouraged me to teach what I learned from her and
told me that it was Ann Wigmore's dream that many people would learn
about this lifestyle and would go on to teach others. I have been in
touch with Shu about this lawsuit and she is being very supportive of
me, and does not agree with this suit. She has not been associated
with the Ann Wigmore Foundation since December, 1999, and has recently
opened her own living foods educational center in New Mexico.

The Ann Wigmore Foundation apparently trademarked the terms "living
foods" and "living foods lifestyle" in 1992 and was cancelled February
22, 1999, before being re-registered in 2004. They let the trademark
expire in 1999 and did not reinstate it until 2004. When I did
research for my book title this did not come up.

My attorneys are working on this case now and have told me that since
there are so many other people using these terms and words and
teaching about living foods that we are in need of emails or letters
to support that these words have become commonplace among us. I would
appreciate it so much if you would send me a letter in support of the
fact that hundreds of teachers, writers, and leaders in this raw and
living foods movement use these terms, including yourself, if you do,
and that you do not agree that the Ann Wigmore people or any one
person or group should own the rights to these words or any similar
words or phrases exclusively.

The more supportive letters received from you the better it will help
this case. Dr. Gabriel Cousens sent me a letter of support and in it
he says, "If the Ann Wigmore Institute wins a claim to 'living foods'
and 'living foods lifestyle' there will be many additional lawsuits to
follow."

I believe that there is always a blessing in every situation and even
though this lawsuit is extremely stressful for me I believe it will
have a positive result for the greater good of all. This is, of
course, a concern to me because what I would like to see is
unification among those of us who are teaching this way of living and
eating, and I would like to see this suit resolved peacefully in a
spirit of love and harmony.

Please help me now so that we can put a stop to this suit without
going to court, and hopefully avoid future lawsuits against other
advocates of the raw and living foods lifestyle. My attorneys say that
if the Ann Wigmore Foundation were to win this suit, then there will
be many other suits to follow. I need as many letters and emails from
the leaders, writers and teachers in this movement as possible. Time
is of the essence and we must act on this quickly. We must respond by
May 1 to the suit, so I need your letters by April 25, 2006.

I know that all of you are very busy, but if you would please take a
few moments to draft a letter to me by email and then send me a hard
copy also, I will be most grateful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Brenda,

I am Gabrielle Chavez, author of The Raw Food Gourmet--Going Raw for
Total Well Being, published by Findhorn Press and North Atlantic Books
last year. Six years ago I learned the phrase "living foods" (from
teachers at the Portland Raw and Living Foods Festivals) was simply an
inclusive term for raw foods plus other foods which share their high
enzyme content by virtue of being fermented. Until hearing about the
trademark challenge from the Ann Wigmore Institute that you report, this
common usage seemed useful, obvious and unquestioned in my experience. I
have gone so far as to name our church's catering ministry "Share the
Love Living Foods" which is not only a reference to the enzymes, but to
Jesus' use of the term "living bread." (John 6:51ff) I do believe Jesus'
popularization of the term preceded the Ann Wigmore Institute's.
Sincerely,

Gabrielle Chavez

Opinions vary, but we do have some pretty strong truth in labeling laws in this country.

If my Madhava brand "Raw Pure-Organic Agave Nectar" reads on the label, "Specially produced at temps below 115 degrees F."  then I believe them.  :)

Hello friends,

The article below is about Portlands vegan and raw cafe, Blossoming Lotus.

I will see you this Monday at the Potluck!

Mike

Raw Talent
Chef Stuart Reiter's Newest Vegan Enterprise
By Alison Hallett

Recently, The New York Times described the raw food
movement as the newest trend in resort cuisine—lucky
for Portlanders, we don't have to head to San Benito
to get raw. Blossoming Lotus, a tiny vegan cafe
located in the lobby of Yoga in the Pearl, offers
uncooked food options to cleanse the spirit and the colon.

The operation is presided over by Head Chef Stuart
Reiter, a veteran of now-defunct vegan restaurants
both famous and infamous: Northeast Portland's much-
missed Counter Culture, and the controversy-riddled
Calendula.

According to Reiter, both of those upscale restaurants
bombed because "most of the people who'll spend money
on fine dining want continental-style dining," as
opposed to faux meatloaf with nutritional yeast gravy.

Despite those setbacks, Reiter remains "passionate about
raw food," and has tried new tactics with Blossoming
Lotus, maintaining an entirely vegan/raw menu, but this
time striking a reasonable balance between affordability
and quality.

My first foray into Reiter's raw cuisine was the live
parsnip pasta: noodles made from grated parsnip and
tossed with tomatoes in a walnut-olive tapenade.

The slightly spicy, aggressively flavorful sauce
distracted me from the fact that I was eating raw
parsnip, although I did feel compelled to chew every
bite 40 times to ensure proper digestion.

The next time around, I started with the vegan escarole
salad. The wilted greens are served warm, with baked
tofu, onions, and walnuts, then dressed in balsamic
vinegar. I couldn't slurp this salad down fast enough,
the savory tofu serving as an addictive counterpoint to
the soggy, salty greens.

Following that excellent starter, the raw soft taco was
striking in that it bore no resemblance to any taco I've
ever met. It was more like a conceptual taco, consisting
of chunks of cucumber, tomato, and avocado, then mixed
with the pepitas pâte (a blend of pumpkin seeds, cilantro,
and tomato) and wrapped in lettuce.

Topping off the extremely green concoction was "sour
creme," a house-made sour cream substitute. Though the
dish didn't satisfy any of my usual taco requirements,
being neither greasy, filling, nor three for a dollar,
the freshness of the ingredients made for an entrée that
was light, crunchy, and refreshing; a perfect post-yoga
snack.

I just wish they'd called it a "lettuce wrap" or
something, so as to prevent thoughts of real tacos
from interrupting the eating experience.

I was still hungry after my "taco," so for dessert I
tried an almond cookie and a brownie from the small
selection of vegan pastries in the dessert tray. The
cookie was so dry it was almost inedible.

I brought it home for my cat to play with, and he spent
an hour batting it across my kitchen floor like the
flavorless hockey puck it was. The brownie, however,
defied all preconceived notions about vegan-baked goods
(sorry guys, but they usually suck).

Its moist, chocolaty decadence provided a delicious and
much-needed dose of fat and sugar.

Sitting in Blossoming Lotus' sunny cafe, surrounded by
pretty people with naturally glowing skin, is like
stepping into an alternate reality, one in which I
exercise three times a day, think deeply about every
bite of food before I eat it, and have regularly
scheduled bowel movements. Like the man said: I
wouldn't want to live there, but it sure is a nice
place to visit.

Friends,

I am new to the group. My name is Laurie and I'm a recent raw food convert.
Hope to
meet some new faces at the potluck tonight if I can make it.

Just wanted to let you see a short excerpt from a friend of mine who is in
Nepal right
now. There is a lot of oppression from the government because they don't want to
give the
people the democracy they want. One of the ways they are oppressing is by
restricting
fresh food. It really makes me appreciate how blessed we are in the U.S. right
now.

< I am reacting to the food in weird ways. My stomach is consistently cramping
(for about
the last 4 days). Not unbearably, but not pleasant either. I think it's a
combination of
almost NO nutrients in my diet and also the fact that Nepali food is spicy. I
always feel
hungry, and I have to watch to make sure I don't overeat, as I get full but
don't feel
fed...my body's begging for something with more nutrition than white rice and
sugar. I
also feel generally tired and lazy. It's so funny though – we had salad for the
first time a
couple days ago, and I felt like dancing and twirling inside! I never saw salad
as a mercy
before, but I do now. Many things are coming into perspective for me here! :-)

But these are not major problems, just little inconveniences...so
don't worry about
me, but I would appreciate prayer. It is made more difficult by the fact that
the city is
shutting down, so vegetables are becoming less accessible. But at least we have
a little!
People in inner-Kathmandu are really suffering as they are constantly under
curfew, can't
leave the house, and even if they could they couldn't get vegetables because
there just
aren't any being transported into the city!>

hello,

been growing wheatgrass for awhile now. My roommate has a (not so
good) hand-crank juicer for the stuff, but THAT effects my carpal
tunnel stuff. so, I'm looking for someone who has an juicer that they
don't want and would like to sell to me.

Thanks!

Hello:

As I follow up with the people I have met at past festivals, potlucks and talks I know that improving ones health is not easy or straight forward.  Social and commercial pressures can be great.  For me support from visitors like Matt and Angela are key to  my staying the course and not returning rapidly to ill health.  :>)

Matt Monarch author of the book Raw Spirit is coming to Vancouver this month.  Matt is close friends with Paul Nison and he works with Fred Bisci, Ph.D.,  Fred is 40 years on the path.

Matt has worked through many of the challenges of diet change for himself and with his consulting clients. I hope you will be able to meet him and hear him speak.  Also speaking with him will be a young woman, 27 Angela Stokes,  who has used the raw lifestyle to lose over 150 lbs. She is here from England.

Please go to his website www.rawspirit.org to see the schedule of his talks in the Northwest or for speed I added some website excerpts at the end of this email

Tacoma Washington, Lopez Island and if there is enough interest here in Vancouver WA!  Please let me know you want to hear them speak and cannot  make one of their Portland talks.

Matt In this talk discusses:
# Is the Raw Food Diet for you?
# Overcoming Health Challenges
# Why some diets work and some don’t
# Difficulties that may arise on your journey
# Benefits of eating Raw Foods, juicing and colonics

This is a quote from Angela's website: (http://www.rawreform.com/)

My hope is that by sharing my personal story and insights into raw weight loss, I can help to inspire and motivate others to reclaim their health and happiness, overcoming the often devastating effects of obesity and overeating. The information offered here is a collection of my thoughts and guidance based on my own life-changing experience and research into living raw.You do not have to live with ill health, depression or low self-respect, battling against your body - by eating mainly raw foods and taking care of yourself and your environment with natural products, you can safely reclaim your health. The raw lifestyle is simple, but offers revolutionary results, if you are willing to take steps forward for your health. Being overweight or obese can seriously damage your well-being on many levels - confidence, mobility, opportunities and emotional balance for example are all affected. The information you read here is not about a fad diet, it is a complete lifestyle that transformed my life and can help you lose weight permanently.

Angela Stokes speaks about:
# Healthy, rapid weight loss
# How to break overeating patterns
# Balancing detox with slimming
# Taking care of the body naturally
# Addressing the underlying issues

Angela's website is http://www.rawreform.com/

I had a near catastrophe last week and thought I'd pass along this
information with the hope I can prevent the same thing happening to
someone else's dog ...

While I was cleaning out the freezer, I got sidetracked, and didn't
have an opportunity to put all the food up out of the way of Desi, my
Golden Retriever (a raw dog). Desi helped herself to over a pound of
macadamia nuts and several quarts of raspberries and blueberries.

She appeared listless a couple of hours later, but I attributed this
to the gas from the fat and fructose -- as well as the amount she ate.
The next morning she could barely get out of her house to come greet
me. I'm used to her standing at the door wondering how long it's going
to take for me to serve her breakfast.

I phoned her veterinary office in Portland to ask whether I should
worry. They were concerned about the macadamia nuts not being able to
pass and getting stuck somewhere in her system. They told me to go to
an emergency care clinic where I could have x-rays and blood work
done. Fortunately, the vet that Desi used to go to near Hood River is
able to provide this kind of emergency care.

Desi was obviously losing control over her hind end. She had to
concentrate VERY hard in order to be able to get up and walk slowly.

Whether Dr. Kathi knew, or had studied up before we arrived, she
advised me that macadamia nuts have a neurotoxicity for dogs! I have
since found more information on the internet.

"Clinical signs commonly reported from most to least frequent were
weakness, depression, vomiting, ataxia, tremors, and hypothermia."

Desi went through a regime of activated charcoal and metamucil and
spent the night at the clinic. She was able to come home the next
morning, having passed most of the nuts. Her blood work was clear, and
we'd not had to do x-rays.

Happily, Desi is fine now, and back to her happy, energetic self.

I have been on a spring cleanse juice diet for a week. I plan to go
for two more weeks. Look for a spring cleanse and fall cleanse buddy
to talk to and take saunas together.

I am also seeking to rent a room in a raw food house.

Hi Raw Portland,

Mike sent an email about the raw foods demos that are happening in
the Portland area over the next couple days (thanks Mike!). I went
to the one at People's Coop today, and it was wonderful! I ate so
much delicious raw food: cookies, green smoothie, Indian veggie
curry, and mango lassi. Everything was soooo good, and the
instructors were really warm and approachable. Here are the dates
and times still to come:

Subject: Our new hummus flavor, "Olive"
livinspoonful
Send Email Send Email

Greetings!

We're excited to announce the debut of our newest hummus flavor,
"Olive". We've been wanting to do something with olives for a long
time, but availability of affordable raw olives has been a challenge.
We've finally settled on a recipe that uses raw kalamata olives that
we can sell for the same price as our other flavors. These olives are
from Greece and are not pasteurized or heated in any way during their
curing.

However, they are packed in a brine that contains wine vinegar which
we believe is not raw. Except for the olives, the recipe is the same
as our "Original" hummus recipe, minus the parsley.

Given that there are many degrees of purity in a raw diet, we're
hoping that a product with only a tiny fraction of calories that have
been pasteurized will be appealing to our customers. Considered in the
context of the very high quality of these olives and the richness of
minerals and vitamins that they provide, we feel that this recipe
could be a good choice. We invite you to check it out.

Lastly, it's our hope that informing our customers through forums such
as this that we can meet our goals for transparity, quality, service
and sustainability. Please let us know what you think as we develop
our recipes with you in mind.

Many blessings and good health,

Jim Brosseau, President
