Thank you for the compliments on my daughter.  She won't know until Monday whether she passed the testing or not (the girl who reviews the "transcription" part is off today).  I'll let ya'll know when I know.

I do medical transcription, too.  I've been doing it for 10 years and do it from home.  I love it!  Right now I have 5 different accounts I can pull from and they include orthopedics, neurology, rheumatology, and family practice.

Your daughter looks beautiful, dressed up for her interview.  A lot of young girls should take her example.
My last position was at a medical transcription company, but I didn't do that work; I was administrative assistant.  Had to admire the girls that had that position; it's not an easy job; hard work.
I hope your daughter got the position.
She's pretty; reminds me a tiny bit of Bristol Palin who is on Dancing with the Stars show on ABC.

Sam and everyone, just noticed that in my original post, I gave the time of Saturday's signing as 3 p.m. It's actually at two o'clock. Sorry. Obviously my editing skills aren't that great.

Hope all of you who live along the east coast fared okay with the various storms that merged over our heads this week. I was out and about yesterday and it wasn't bad where I am, but more rain and wind overnight.

Hi everyone... Just popping up because I think some of you -- when you're not at Jack's Bar -- actually live in Virginia. I'll be signing the new Chesapeake Shores Christmas book at 3 p.m Saturday at the Borders in Central Park in Fredericksburg. It's right at I-95 and the Route 3 West exit so fairly convenient from northern Virginia or Richmond...if you can stand the traffic.
I'd love to meet some of you in person!

I think it all depends on the time frame.
When I was a kid/teenager/young adult, we wouldn't
dream of going to church unless we were dressed up.
Even the mothers and fathers went all dolled up to
church.  I remember one lady and her three daughters
outside on Sunday morning standing around and
waiting for the neighbors to compliment how nice they
looked!
I remember on Easter Sunday wearing a hat and a spring coat.  We had what we called spring coats at that
time which was a light weight wool.
But even when the styles have changed and people came to church in jeans, I wouldn't think of it.  I had what I called dress pants, wore that with a jacket/blazer, etc.

My grandmother was often dubbed "The Queen mother" by family and friends, because she never went out of the house without everything matching, her hair done, and makeup on. She always wore a broach on the lapel of her coat and always wore a scarf, gloves and a hat. So I learned at an early age to make sure I was always neat and put together before I left the house..

Yeah - I totally agree with you.

I still go into the office every day and wouldn't think of not dressing professionally. Am pleased to say my daughters are the same way.

I do admit to being casual when traveling tho, A big difference from my mother - I have pictures of she and my dad in the fifties, and they were accompanying a baseball team to China for exhibition games. My mom was dressed up to the nines - complete with suit, hat and gloves. How uncomfortable that must have been.

I'm from one of those old families that we dressed up for church with the crinkly petticoat and a hat with the stretch band underneath my chin !    I remember asking my mother why all the women wore hats to church, and mom said, "to keep the bats out of their hair!"

One of my favorite movies not only because James Stewart, Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant were in it, but the gowns that Katherine wore....yes, it was black and white (The Philadelphia Story), but the way they fit and flowed and sparkled.......any of the old movies with Lana Turner, now that lady could wear clothes !!!

I just admire a person who takes time to have their hair and nails done or at least get ongoing haircuts!
You would not believe what the young girls with babies look like when they go out of the house!  I am amazed!

Sorry, but you have the brains enough to know that going out in your pjs to the store doesn't look very well put together.  And I have to laugh at the girls who are heavy and they wear these tight knit tops that show all their bulges.  I am far from thin, but I would rather wear my blouses loose instead of form fitting.

Okay, if you are cold during the winter, they have very nice sweat outfits that look presentable.  Heck, WalMart has decent prices for all sizes!   I see them in my catalogs for all sizes.  No excuse.

If you don't want to spend a lot on clothes, WalMart, KMart and Target are very reasonable.

My aunt used to say that it doesn't cost a lot to look nice!!!

Heck, I always made time to look presentable before I
took my kids off to school.  Even when they were little, to take a shower I would put them on the rug on the floor of the bathroom and lock the door!  And of course I could see them if I was okay.  Girls who say that they don't have time to shower -- another poor excuse.
For these movie stars, what i mean is mostly about their hair.  It looks like they just pinned it up with either pins or a claw clip, whatever, put on their dressy dresses and went on the red carpet.  what happened to having your hair done?  If that was done by a professional, I would fire her!

Don't know why anyone would be offended at the absolute truth.   We could go on and on and agree about the "natty" way most celebrities choose to look now, but what's the point ... and they aren't going to change until the next fad comes along.   Who knows?  Maybe the next fad will be "neatness and put-together"!

I also agree with you, Peg about going out of the house looking like a scrub woman.   Gals much younger than you and me don't have as much style sense and going to the grocery store in your pajamas, well it just looks tacky.

I'm also guilty of putting on makeup when I go out, even if it's just a little mascara and a day at the beauty salon is something that I not only enjoy, but I am damn grateful that I can afford to enjoy that pleasure.   My Jim will worry over expenses (he is, after all, a depression baby and his favorite expression is.."I worked for 25 cents an hour)..........but he insists that I have my hair and nail day and  when I suggested I should have a cleaning service every other week, he said..."no way, when the day comes I can't afford it, I'll let you know" !!!!

What doesn't make sense is the fact that it costs the celebrities a hell of a lot more to look messy than it does to look glamorous.  LOL

I remember as a little girl, going into the city on the train, I wore my sunday best.  You never went into Macy's dressed casual.  Everyone seemed to be dressed up back then.  Even the sales people were dressed, had their name tags on with their departments and the little red flower on their lapel!!!

LOL   She may have been very comfortable as well as stylish.   I remember traveling  in a suit and heels whenever Jim and I would fly up to NY or somewhere he would have a business convention, etc. and it was the norm.  Now I travel in jeans for comfort and I look good too ~~~ always a nice top and/or jacket and, of course, my boots.  LOL    It's amazing to see what people wear on an airplane!   Comfort is one thing, but cut off jeans (up to the arse) and T-shirts with bra straps showing (one of my pet peeves).   Of course, as long as they are clean and don't smell bad, bad taste is their problem, not mine.  LOL
(oh, I actually saw a young gal bend over to pick up her carry on and put it in the overhead compartment and she was wearing a thong ~~ I wasn't the only one who noticed it, sad to say!)

My grandmother was like that too - she lived to be 100 and was amazing. She'd come stay with us and in the morning when she came down for breakfast - usually around 7 - she'd be totally dressed, always a nice dress with a lace collar, her jewelry and her hair and make up done. I, on the other hand was rushing around getting the kids ready for school and my husband out the door, so I was usually in a robe, and certainly not up to her standards. She'd always say, "Babsie - you have to keep yourself up, if you want to keep your husband". He, on the other hand, always said if he'd met her first, she'd have been the one he married. He adored her.

But I am sure I read the first two a few years back!

Hi girls --
I've been staying up late the past week reading Kristan Higgins All I Ever Wanted and I finished it last night.  I LOVED that book!  I'm having some serious Ian lust!  It's by turns hilarious, warm, sentimental, sexy....  I can't wait to reread it.  If you haven't had a chance to read it, make time.  It's such a great story!  xoxoxox  Robyn

Not that bad in Virginia Beach, but still wetter than usual.   Depending on the roads going out of the area and a morning appointment, I can't be sure I will make it to Central Park, but I'm sure going to try.

I also remember dressing my three children in their Easter Sunday togs and several years later it dawned on me that it was a dumb practice.  Not in going to Easter service, but to make a  habit of buying new clothes and dressing up.   After that decision, we went but we went as we always did on any given Sunday...with nice, clean clothes and children.  LOL    For myself, for many years, I have not attended church on Easter Sunday.  Rather, we would go out to Ft. Story (or just on the beach) for Easter Sunrise, which was much more enjoyable and significant than battling the "who's wearing what" in church.   Don't ask me why I became so ticked at people trying to outdo others in the "hat" department (which you never see anymore) but it gave me the sense that they had no concept of what Easter meant other than being the day to show off their finery.
But, that's me!!  I'm sure others feel quite differently and maybe a few feel the same.   LOL

When does My One and Only come out? I will definitely be eagerly anticipating that one. I have 4 of her books in my ebook reader. I need to read those soon.

Hi Julie, you so need to read the rest of Kristan's books. My faves are Too Good to be True and Just One of the Guys. Catch of the Day follows, then The Next Best Thing, All I Ever wanted, and Fools Rush In. Her next book is My One and Only; I can't wait for that one to hit the shelves.

Peace and love,

I have thought of looking into Medical Transcription too. However, I'm not sure how the job outlook is in that field and also I don't hear that well, so I'm not sure if that would be a good job for me. I've also considered Medical Billing/Coding.  The programs are just so expensive. I'm hoping to go back to school though either in the spring or next fall, and hopefully I can figure out what I want to do. I've also thought alot about going into Graphic Design/web design....so it's entertaining seeing all your neat graphics! :)

One of my all time favorites, The Philadelphia Story, and I remember Kate Hepburn in those beautiful gowns.   I was not that impressed with the remake (High Society) and almost resented that they even attempted to follow the original.   Who can beat Cary Grant when he shoved Kate in the face back into the house.  LOL   As for Lana Turner, she  was one of the most beautiful women on the planet.   No one today can come close.    Of course, I have to mention my number one favorite, Elizabeth Taylor.   She was the most beautiful of all, especially in her hay day ~~and as heavy as she gets, she is still beautiful, at least to me.    I did meet her once, back in the 70's (I believe) when she was married to John Warner and he was running for  the US Senate and we were at various functions during that time.   Of course he won and the newspaper gave her credit for his win, but to be honest, John Warner became one of the best known and influential  Senators that Virginia ever had.  A good man, now retired.  I have a small painting of sunflowers he did (he loved to paint flowers and is very good) and also a print of Irises he did, but I have never gotten around to having it framed.  I need to do that.  LOL       (Oh, while many of you probably already know this,  Elizabeth had a habit of using some very choice words and I remember sitting a couple of seats down from her at a celebrity tennis match during his campaign and the F word popped out and even though I had heard the word before, it was a shock to hear it come out of her otherwise lovely mouth. LOL)    See, another memory crossed my mind.  Love it!

I had such a crush on Tony Curtis. I think I saw all his movies twice back then.
We are dating ourselves(Operation Petticoat). Jamie Lee was just on Rachel Ray
show on Tuesday. She definitely has her father's smile and personality.

My Grandmother Snyder always wore little white gloves, a clutch purse, and hat to church.  Dressed up nice to.  Sort of like Aunt Bea on the Andy Griffith Show, Mayberry RFD, I loved that show. :)  Oh good memories for sure.  Now they do not even dress up for weddings or funerals.

I think sometimes that young girls need someone in their lives to show them the way... But everyone has their own style, so there goes the way of the world.

Kathleen

Yeah - I totally agree with you.

I still go into the office every day and wouldn't think of not dressing professionally. Am pleased to say my daughters are the same way.

I do admit to being casual when traveling tho, A big difference from my mother - I have pictures of she and my dad in the fifties, and they were accompanying a baseball team to China for exhibition games. My mom was dressed up to the nines - complete with suit, hat and gloves. How uncomfortable that must have been.

Oh man I remember in the 50's and 60's women going to the store with culers in their hair , albeit a scarf on, but I always thought that was so tacky, now look at how they dress or are undressed. LOL!

LOL

I love the medical transcription, but you are right -- it may be fading away.  So many places are going to voice recognition programs.  However, I thought this would completely delete MTs, but my daughter has interviewed for the hospital (which has gone to voice recognition), but there is something about her editing the doctor's dictations or something.  I hope she gets the job, and then I want to know more about it!

The medical field is just so interesting.  Medical coding/billing is something else I wouldn't mind getting in to, but I'm tooooo old to start over now!  LOL

Graphic design/web design is also very interesting.  I belong to a group called PSP-N.  We use Paint Shop Pro and have tutorials, challenges, share all sorts of tubes, graphics, etc.  We are a small group (but LOTS of posts), and we've all become friends to where we know a lot about each other's families, etc.  You are more than welcome to join the group (http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/PSP-N/).

Good luck with whatever you choose to do, and keep us updated!

Not sure I appreciate the similarity, but she was a good woman and she made sure that I had a new coat every year (they came with leggings, a hat and a muff) and I have a picture of myself in one of those outfits).     My Dad died when I was sixteen months old and my Mom raised my four older brothers and me......with the help of the entire family, including Aunts and Uncles.   They circled the wagons, so to speak, and we all grew up knowing what family meant.   One brother went to Upper Darby and lived with my Aunt and Uncle until he decided he wanted to attend high school back home.  My oldest brother lived in Newport News (a nearby city) with another Aunt and Uncle.  My two other brothers lived at home with me, my Mom and a wonderful un-married (then) Uncle and my maternal Grandparents.   I think having such a close and loving family, we didn't realize that anything was missing.   My brothers knew my Dad, but I didn't of course.  The saddest of all, he died of pneumonia of all things and penicillin wasn't discovered until the year after he died.
