Subject: [SCA-Archery] Longbow for sale

Just putting this out there. If anyone is interested, I am looking to to sell my wonderful Howard Hill longbow to make room to purchase another longbow.
The longbow  model is the Halfbreed: 1 Bamboo & 4 Yew laminates, Bocote (pistol grip) handle. 70" long, 37# @29" draw. The bow is in great shape with no problems. It retails new for $550 without the extra lamination and shipping. I would like to get $400 for it.

If anyone is interested in it or wants to see a picture let me know.

Greetings Crossbow Shooters

I have found that I am in the need for some information about the rules
reguarding the usage of crossbows.

I also need to know if any of the following states disallows the usage of
crossbow.
Tennesse
Florida
Kentucky
Georgia
Alabama
North Carolina
South Carolina

I also need to know if the crossbows are to be configured.

Also need to know where they are used. Certian Parks, ranges.

Please contact me off list.

Iain, I just found this link.  It may be your best source since it sounds like you are using one for hunting.

Not Hunting Trying to get people in Adrian Empire that target crossbows can be
used in these areas. the areas I mentioned are saying they cannot use them at
all trying to find out why. I don't understand their reasoning because you in
the SCA have been using them for years.

After I get the needed info I will then present it to the Adrians for their
consideration.

In short we are trying to bring target crossbows into the Adrian Empire.

In Tennessee there are no leagal restrictions on the use of target crossbow (beyond those for any sort of archery). That being said, many private and public ranges post rules against crossbows. This because of the power of modern hunting crossbows and the short length of crossbow bolts. Inconsiderate people in the past have destroyed target butts digging buried crossbow bolts out.

The solution for most sites, is with the site owner's permission, set-up your own target stands for crossbow use. Use a Saunders mat or Ether foam target to stop crossbow bolts.

Correction.  That should read Monday, July 25. Not July 26.

Unto the Group does Lord Ervald the Optimistic send greetings.

Zorikh Lequidre (known in the SCA as Lord Ervald the Optimistic), who was
involved in the production of "The Pennsic War: A Video Documentary" 20 years
ago,and has since released the "Special Edition 10 years ago and the DVD more
recently," is prudicing a follow-up, titled "Return to Pennsic,"

In this new project, Lord Evald will be finding out what has changed and what
has stayed the same over the past 20 years. He will be joined by "Simply the
Best" G.A. West, a fitness professional, life coach, and former champion pro
wrestler who has had no experience with anything even remotely connected to the
SCA. He will be finding out about the physical aspects of SCA combat, the life
choices people make to be in the SCA, and how the personas that people take on
affect what they get out of the SCA.

This is a very ambitious project that is already receiving a lot of buzz. The
crowned heads of 7 kingdoms are among the many significant people who have
signed on to be interviewed. Merchants and artisans have agreed to contribute
garb and accessories for G.A. West's first Pennsic. however in order to make
this project all it has the potential to be, it needs just a little more
funding.

There is a fundraising campaign set up at www.indiegogo.com/Return-to-Pennsic
Through this website you can contribute to the project and get special perks,
including copies of the video, listing in the credits, a link to your website,
even a share of the profits!

You can find out much more about this project at the website, and see preview
videos with Lord Ervald and G.A. West. Please support this project and help this
new video come to reality!

I know that it is far from period.. or reality for that ..
But if you go to GIBow.com and look at the legolas bow featured on the front page, you will see something reallky interesting.

Greetings to the Archers of the Known world.

On this day at 3:35pm Master Baron Blackarrow of Boyd passed after a long illness. With him was close friends and family. He passed peacefully and was comfortable he did not suffer.

During his life he shared his love of Archery, he also enjoyed talking with those he meet. He was loved by many across the Society.

I just checked their site.  You are quite correct, "Traditional Only" is a trademark for a brand of carbon shafting.  "Traditional only carbon shafts" would seem to be an oxymoron.  I had interpreted it as "only traditional arrows or shafts".

It's an easy mistake. While mundane traditional archers are using carbon shafts more and more frequently I think marketing is still feeling as if they have to somehow justify their use. Calling them Traditional Only may be their answer.

I just checked their site.  You are quite correct, "Traditional Only" is a trademark for a brand of carbon shafting.  "Traditional only carbon shafts" would seem to be an oxymoron.  I had interpreted it as "only traditional arrows or shafts".

Three Rivers is offering a $20 gift card with the purchase of a dozen traditional shafts or arrows.  This could save some money on the cost of arrow shafts if you use it to buy more shafts.  Read the details at the bottom.

The bow shown is a 'Center Shot Stone Bow' from a painting dated about 1440 AD.

It is interesting to note the split bowstring shown, as this type of bowstring/cable set-up has recently been used on the modern Compound Bows to do away with using the usual cable guard set-up.
Does anyone have anymore info on this bow?
This is all I could find.

The stone crossbow a common bow, and you can read a blurb about it here:
    http://www.thebeckoning.com/medieval/stonebow/about-sbow.html

Nice images of a period stone crossbow are here:
    http://www.adrax.com/watsons/stonebow.htm

In the Twelfth Night, Act 2, Scene 5, Shakespeare even mentions one as an
appropriate tool for putting out someone's eye.

I've seen references to hand-stonebows, and seen a copy of your illumination
tidbit before. I know of no one modern who makes one, nor has attempted to make
one, and I suspect they would be very hazardous to shoot.

Generally they were used to hunt birds, and it is believed that the preferred
ammunition was clay balls, rather than stones, for accuracy purposes.

I recently got a bow at an antique store that has some markings on the
    back. The markings are:

    AO (possibly 0?)
    68
    35
    28'
    H

    10
    1

The mark beside the 28 is about 3/4 the height of the 28 and super-scripted.

Does anyone have any clue what they might mean?
The 68 is, most likely, the overall length of the bow.
The rest of the numbers I don't know.

AMO 68" (length of the bow, per Archery Manufacturers Organization)
    35# @ 28" draw length
    H - unsure.

Other markings are often serial or model numbers.

I considered making one.  The plan was to make a take down longbow with two different handles and strings, one set for arrows and one for pellets.  I even considered a removable rest for the stone bow to allow it to shoot arrows.  Then I got busy making blowguns.  In Europe during the Middle Ages blowguns were used to shoot pellets in addition to darts like large caliber pea shoorters.
