Hike on Saturday 9th April: Sai Kung to Tate's Cairn via Emerald Hill (Maclehose
4)

Grade : Moderate plus to strenuous.

Meet: Choi Hung MTR station Exit C at 9.25, or Sai Kung bus station at 10am.

Walking time: NOT including stops, four plus hours, so allow at least five hours

We will take a minibus to Sai Kung from Choi Hung. We walk up to join the
Maclehose Trail from Sai Kung bus station. Emerald Hill is optional, but a good
leg
stretcher to enjoy a good view and snack. Of course, Ma On San has the better
view
but is a little out of the way. Descending Emerald Hill, we continue along
Maclehouse 4 with lovely views of sleepy Hebe Haven, and meander past the tawny
slopes of Buffalo Hill towards Tate's Cairn. Up and over Tate's Cairn, we
descend
Jat's Incline to Wong Tai Sin MTR station. This is one of my favourite walks in
Hong
Kong - hopefully we will be able to witness the lovely scenery.

The weather has warmed up substantially and this is a LONG hike, so please come
prepared with plenty of water, lunch, and sunscreen. I haven't checked the
weather
forecast, but best be prepared for rain too.

Tel before the hike: Susie Whaley: 2849-5674, phone on the day 97429583

Subject: ANZAC adventure (aka this week's hike)
jennannwu@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi everyone
This week's hike will be an Australia-NZ joint venture
(Peter McT and me), so Peter has dubbed it ANZAC. A
prize on Saturday for anyone who knows what it
means...
We're interested in going out on the peninsula to the
NE of Tai Long Wan, Sai Kung district. However, as I
sit here poring over my map, I can see two
likely-looking peninsulas, so we'd better explore the
other one next time. The one we want to walk out to
this week doesn't appear to have any name, which is a
bit odd.
We plan to walk in from Pak Tam Au to Tai Wan, then
take the path out onto the peninsula from the far end
of Tai Wan.
Confession time: we haven't recced this walk, and a
friend has told us there may not be a clear track -
however, the track on the map is perfectly clear!
Bush-bashing and losing a few of our friends may be
just two of the risks we'll be taking - and who knows
what wild animals lurk out there??
Anyway, after exploring the peninsula, if we still
have time and energy and a few hikers left, we'll
attempt Sharp Peak, going up the way we usually come
down. This will NOT be compulsory, and any who wish
could return via Tai Wan.
If/When we manage to gasp our way to the summit of
Sharp Peak, we'll descend it via the route we usually
ascend it, if you get my drift (am I rambling, by the
way?).
We'll then walk down to the bumboats (I believe
they're called) and sit in relative luxury all the way
to Wong Shek Pier, from where we'll take a bus back to
the relative sanity and civilisation of Sai Kung, and
Allie Ollie's.
If you tackle Sharp Peak, it will be strenuous, but if
not it'll be moderate.
It could be long, so we want to meet quite early: 9am
at Exit C, Choi Hung MTR.
Water - you'll need lots of that (there's a little
cafe not far from Tai Wan Beach, so you could
replenish supplies there).
Bring your lunch and nibbles.
Optional extras: axes, hatchets or kitchen cleavers to
fight your way through the bush...
My mobile is 9842 8391 - sorry, haven't got Peter's
with me but will send it out tomorrow.
We're looking forward to seeing you - and don't be put
off by all the above. There may well be a beautiful
track (and there will be by the time we've finished!).
Jenny

I did not send this out and have absolutely no idea where it originated from.

thanks to all hikers who have emailed me and asked what was going
on...the answer is that I'm as perplexed as everyone else.

Subject: Afghanistan - Autumnal Adventure
roger.brumhill@...
Send Email Send Email

General: - stimulated by a recent presentation by Matthew Leeming to the
Royal Gepgraphical Society - Hong Kong entitled "Afghanistan Past &
Present" I have subsequently accepted an invitation from Matthew to lead
a trek into the north of Afghanistan in the area of Shiva and Shignan, a
unique and challenging world that will not survive much longer. That
Lonely Planet has yet to embrace Afghanistan probably says it all - this
is a once in a lifetime opportunity for those that enjoy travel with an
"edge".

Timing: -

Depart HKG Sat 30 Jul
Return HKG Sun 14 Aug

Outline Itinerary

Sat 30 Jul - depart HKG via Dubai (?) - Kabul
Overnight Kabul
Sun 31 Jul - Kabul - Faisbad

Overnight Faisabad which is a mountain city on the banks of the gold
bearing River Kokcha. It was the acting capital during the
Massoud-Taliban civil war and our accommodation will be the magnificant
Government Guest House built as a palace for President Rabbani complete
with cabinet room. However the electricity supply is reputedly
intermittent and water hot - sometimes.....!! The river is good to swim
in and the bazaar provides ample opportunity to haggle over the price of
lapis lazuli.

Mon Aug 1 - drive Faisbad - Shiva
Camp overnight

Tues Aug 2 -)
Wed Aug 3 -) trek around Lake Shiva

Lake Shiva is one of the most inaccessible parts of Afghanistan and we
will share the beauty of the area with the Kuchi nomands for whom this
is their summer pastures.

Wilfred Thesiger visited them in 1957 and reported "I was keen to visit
Lake Shiva in Badakshan where in summer the nomadic Pathans, known
locally as Kandaris, congregated. The way north from here to Badakhshan
involved a steep trek up a side valley and over the Munjan Pass out of
Nuristan. We marched for three hours and camped at an empty ailaq
(summer camp) just below the snow line where we met a party of tweleve
Munjanis carrying salt. Near the pass we noticed the track of a snow
leopard". (Among Mountains - pg 144)

Lake Shiva is a turquoise blue colour and it's status as a source of the
River Oxus was only established in the late 1960's by the diplomat and
explorer Hugh Leach. For this feat he received the RGS's Lawrence of
Arabia medal.

Thur Aug 4 - drive Shiva - Shignan

Shignan is the main settlement on the River Oxus on it's northward sweep
from Ishkashim, the gateway to Wakhan. The area is famous for it's ruby
mines discovered by the American explorer and gem hunter Gary Bowersox
in the 1990's. They are mines first described by Marco Polo and produced
two of the British Crown Jewels - the Black Prince's ruby worn by
Henry Vth at Agincourt and Tamerlaine's ruby.

Fri Aug 5 - )
Sat Aug 6 - ) from Shignan we trek north up the River Oxus valley to
and around the area of Darwaz
Sun Aug 7 - )

Mon Aug 8 - )
Tues Aug 9 - ) trek to and around Roshan where the trail turns westwards
inland
Wed Aug 10 -)

Thur Aug 11 - we return to Faisabad via the Turghan pass.

Fri Aug 12 - Faisabad - Kabul
Sat Aug 13 - Kabul
Sun Aug 14 - return HKG

I have made arrangements to meet Matthew at the end of the month to
"flesh out" the itinerary, determine the nature of logistic support and
associated matters after which I will issue a comprehensive brief. In
the meantime anyone that wishes to register an expression of intent
would be welcome to do so either by email or through my mobile 90358031.

Happy trekking.....!!

Meet at 9.45am for 10am start at Exit B, Tung Chung MTR (Deli France
is outside Exit B so good for breakfast before the hike). I thought
I'd make it later as we have had many early hikes.
Leader: Lynn Seymour mobile: 90934248.

I rate this hike as easy to moderate. Easy because it is more or
less walking on the flat with a few uphill slopes. Moderate because
it will take about 4.5 hrs. I will have chalk with me to make
arrows, as a precaution for any lingerers (!).

From Tung Chung we have to endure going through a few urbanised
stretches where there used to be fields pre the new airport but we
soon get into the countryside and reach 3 of the old remaining
villages of San Tau, Tin Sam and Kau Liu with many abandoned old
houses and few villagers remaining. We carry on through through Sha
Lo Wan, a settlement which dates back to the Ming Dynasty and then
into a wooded valley to the villages of San Shek Tsuen (and temple)
and San Shek Wan - look out for the clumps of Golden Bamboo. Walking
on we get to Sham Wat with a bay with mangrove and beach and then
through a woodland of Chinese red pine trees which are increasingly
uncommon in HK due to a viral disease spread by a beetle. These have
now been supplemented by North American slash pine which is resistant
to the disease. Woodland turns into low growing grass-scrubland on
steep slopes which plunge to the sea and the path drops to the
water's edge before Tai O and then climbs to a ridge for a panoramic
view of the town. We approach Tai O by walking through the stilt
village which then leads into Tai O village itself.

For those who want to, either eat at Tai O (ETA 2.30/3pm) or catch
the bus back to Tung Chung MTR or No. 1 bus to Mui Wo for the ferry.

Remember to bring Octupus card, hat, mozzy spray, water and packed
lunch/snacks as we won't get to Tai until about 3pm latest.

Also, please respect your host's strict terms of

So that you wouldn't feel dull or bored
Last night for ages over maps I pored
Trying to come up with something new
Something inspiring for all of you
And I did find a new route but I've no time
To recce it first (not to do so a crime!)
So it's back to an old route, I'm afraid
Cause I'd hate to get you lost or strayed
For I've a reputation to uphold
So I dare not be overly bold
And leading you into the wilderness
Could get us all in a terrible mess...
However the chosen route never appals
Because it passes the waterfalls!
Past Shing Mun reservoir, up Tai Mo Shan
Lunch halfway up, then down is my plan
We'll view the falls and sit on rocks
Take off our sandals, our shoes and socks
Paddle a bit, enjoy the water
You'll like this route, at least you oughter!
And to ease your feet, and lighten the load
Along Shing Mun we won't follow the road
No, that's old hat, we've done that before
We'll follow the morning trail on the east shore
It's prettier and easier on the feet
And, by the way, where will we meet?
Tsuen Wan MTR, Exit A, at 9.30
I know it's early but don't get too shirty
It's quite a long hike so we need to start early
So don't feel mad at me, don't get surly!
I have to travel a long way, too,
But I'm looking forward to seeing all of you
Carrying water, of course, a snack and some lunch
Cause there's no shop where you can buy something to
munch!
I'll carry my mobile, 9842 8391
But we'll leave quite promptly for lovely Shing Mun
So don't phone me to tell me you will be late
A lone taxi to Shing Mun will be your fate!
Jenny

Sorry to gripe and moan – one has a knack
But you didn’t tell us when we get back,
And - should we adopt a sprightly walking pace
When we can we can return home to face
Our loving husbands, wives or partners
Now don’t respond with bardly tartness!
And I think you chose the starting time
Simply to make your verse scan and rhyme.

Hi guys - namaste!

Although it is extremely short notice some of you may care to note that
Matthew Leeming will be presenting a brief lecture over lunch at the
Foreign Correspondents Club tomorrow Fri 6 May commencing at 12.30 hrs
entitled "Travel in Afghanistan", cost to non FCC members HK$180. The
talk will be illustrated and would be of particular interest to those
who have expressed an interest in participating in the August trek to
Northern Afghanistan - Operation "Oxiana Poppy".

Happy trekking. Roger B

For everyone's information, you have to register and pay the FCC for a
ticket prior to tomorrow's lecture. FCC Tel 2521 1511. The FCC will fax
you an application form on request.

This is purely for information purposes only - I am not organising this
event!

Subject: Afghanistan - Interim Operational Order
roger.brumhill@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi guys - namaste!

OPERATION "OXIANA POPPY"

Recent meetings with Matthew Leeming have provided additional
information enabling the issue of an interim operational order pending
receipt of further detail, particularly with regard to the trekking
phase and ground support facilities.

(a) GENERAL - Operation "Oxiana Poppy" will be staged in Badakshan,
Northern Affghanistan, during the period Fri 29 Jul - Sun 14 Aug '05
inclusive. It is considered that Badakshan will become one of the great
trekking destinations in the world, an area that is almost completely
unknown beyond a small group of Afghan specialists and the nomads that
spend the summer months with their flocks of animals amidst some of the
most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. The first phase of
deployment into the operational area will be by road through Islamabad,
and the Kyber Pass to Kabul. Phase two will be by air from Kabul to
Faisabad. Trekking activity will be undertaken in the areas of Lake
Shiva, Shignan, the River Oxus valley, Darwaz, Roshan returning to
Faisabad through the Turghan Pass. This will present a unique travel
opportunity in an area where few Westerners have previously ventured.

(b) MOVEMENT -

Outward:

Depart Hong Kong Fri 29 Jul 22.00 hrs
Arrive Islamabad Sat 30 Jul 03.35 hrs

Inward:

Depart Kabul Sat 13 Aug 15.00 hrs
Arrive Islamabad Sat 13 Aug 16.40 hrs
Depart Islamabad Sat 13 Aug 22.35 hrs
Arrive Hong Kong Sun 14 Aug 07.05 hrs

      (c) PAX - due to logistic constraints in Afghanistan and the need
to maintain "tight grouping" for security reasons on trek
group composition will be restricted to a maximum 12 pax

(d) ITINERARY - as previously published by email dated 19 Apr with
the exception that movement from Islamabad to
Kabul will be by road through the Kyber Pass

(e) COST - the cost of accommodation and transport, particularly in
Kabul, is astonishingly high due to the large presence of the United
Nations and NGO's. Every effort is being made to keep cost to a minimum
and is expected to be circa HK$20/25,000 inclusive of all items except
personal expenditure.

A final operational brief will be issued very shortly against which firm
commitment and deposit will be required.

Happy trekking. Roger B

Hi guys - namaste!

It is not a prerequisite to attend lunch prior to Matthew Leeming's
presentation. Lunch commences at 12.30 hrs followed by the lecture at
13.15 hrs. In the event that you only attend the lecture it is not
necessary to book with the FCC beforehand.

Grade: Easy to Moderate

Meeting place: the bus (6, 41A, 61, 63, 66,76) stop on Wong Nai
Chung Gap Rd, below theTai Tam Reservoir Rd overpass, near the Shell
petrol station (same place as last Saturday)

Or rather, since there may be many of us, let's go up a few steps and
actually meet at the overpass itself, overlooking the bus stop.

Meeting time: 10:30 am

Duration: about 3 hours

Leaders/followers: Anna and Michael, no mobile, home number: 2546 9550

For those not knowing where to get off the bus, we will take the
first #6 (NOT 6A or 6X) bus leaving the Exchange Square terminus in Central,
on or after 10:00 am.

The first 45 min climb up the Violet Hill is somewhat steep, so we put
'moderate' in the description, but then it is downhill only, with
beautiful views of Tai Tam and Repulse Bay. When we get down to the small
bridge at a pass
overlooking Repulse Bay, those looking for a bigger challenge could climb
ca. 1000
steps up The Twins, but we plan to turn left, towards the Tai Tam
Reservoir, and end up at the Tai Tam Rd where a bus/minibus
can be taken to eastern stations of MTR Island Line or the other way to
Stanley, just in time for a late lunch.

Bring hat, water etc..

Hi guys - namaste!

Having expended considerable time and resources in reaching an advanced
stage of planning for the proposed trek to Afghanistan it is necessary
at the juncture to advise the cost of this great adventure before
proceeding any further.

I am now aware that travel in Afghanistan is incredibly expensive and to
compound the problem international air travel to Islamabad will be
undertaken during the "high season". Although Matthew Leeming has been
extremely helpful in amending the previously published itinerary to
achieve a reduction in cost the outcome is that the cost of ground
services in Afghanistan is GBP1,600 and return economy international air
HKG - ISB HK$6,000.

Would those you have previously expressed an indication of interest
confirm their wish to proceed or otherwise by return through email or
mobile (90358031) in order that a comprehensive brief might be issued to
those intending to proceed. A minimum of 6 pax is required for the
planned trek to proceed.

Happy trekking. Roger B

BE SENT TO OVER 100 PEOPLE!!

SaturdayHikers have officially ended their hiking season for the
summer months of 2005 and we begin offical hikes in October 2005.

During this period, anyone is welcome to plan a short hike ending
with a visit to a beach or a dai pai dong/restaurant on a social
basis. Sometimes we do junk boat trips so if anyone has access to
one, please feel free to organise this for the group.

If you wish to volunteer, please email nseymour@... with
your choice of date and hike or activity details and they will be
pasted on this list. Please be specific as to area of your hike so
that others planning a hike will not duplicate in the same area, e.g.
Tai O, Lantau and not just "Lantau". You will need to send out full
details of your hike or activity during the week prior to the
Saturday by posting them on this website.
