How to do Shiva Puja?

PROCESS OF SHIV ADORATION

After taking bath, wearing neat and clean clothes, the worshipper should make oneself sanctified. All the things for Shiv-poojan, as given before in the list of substantial material required, should be kept ready. The CHAUKI, on which the Shiv-Diety is to be throned should be covered by the white cloth and then the phallus-deity be enthroned after giving it a bath in milk, then in GANGAAJAL (water of river Gangaa) in full devotion.

In the same way, the SHIV-TALISMAN should also be placed on the CHAUKI. Shiv-Deity, may be of any metal, stone, wood or clay. It is convenient to have an inscribed Talisman on a copper-plate, otherwise it can be drawn on a bark of birch tree by white sandal.

After giving throne to Lord Shiva, incense stick and the clay-lamp be lighted. The KALASH should also be placed on the right side, filled with water. The leaves of the wood-apple should be sanctified by giving them wash in clean water. It is the assumption that ‘Raam’ ‘Raam’ is also written on these leaves by white sandal, it is more pleasing to God Shiva.
To begin with Pooja after having seat on the Aasan infront of the Diety.

'Om' is the most sacred mystic symbol. This single syllable incarnation is the most  powerful and significant of all the Mantras. The available literaure upon the significance of this Vedic Mantra is voluminous. Nowhere in the world can we meet with a more sacred symbol that has got such a vast amount of significance. From vedic times until the present day, the word 'Om' has been taken as a symbol and as an aid to meditation by spiritual aspirants. It is accepted both as one with Brahman and as the medium (the logos) connecting man and God. This Holy Word is taught in the Upanishads. It signifies Brahman, the divine ground of existence. It also represents the Atman or the Self.

The sound of 'Om' is also called the 'Pranava', meaning that it is something that pervades life, or runs through Prana or Breath. This cosmic sound is heard in deep meditation.Sound is vibration, which , as the modern science tells us, is at the source of all creations. God is beyond vibration, but vibration, being the subtlest form of His creation, is the nearest we can get to Him in the physical world.

Speaking of 'Om', Thaittiriya Upanishad says " Thou art the sheath of Brahman "- that is, Om is the container for the Supreme. So, invoking Om is invoking the Supreme. It is a sacred Mantra and is to be chanted constantly .

The very central theme of Mandukya Upanishad is the syllable 'Om', through which the mystery of Brahman is gathered to a point. The text of this Upanishad first treats 'Om' in terms of the Upanishadic doctrine of the 3 states of Waking, Dream and Sleep, but then passes on to the fourth 'Turiya', thus transporting us beyond the typical Upanishadic sphere, into that of the latter classic "Advaita-Vedanta ".

In 'Om' there are 3 aspects:
  1. The mere sound, the mere Mantra as pronounced by the mouth.
  2. The meaning of the syllable, which is to be realized through feeling.
  3. The application of 'Om' to our character, singing it in our acts and so through our life.
Om represents the Self, which is the Supreme non-dual Reality. The Self is known in 4 states- namely, the Waking state, the Dream state, the Deep-Sleep state and the fourth state called the 'Turiya'. All these are represented in the 3 sounds of Om ( A, U and M), and the silence that follows and sorrounds the syllable.
Sl.No.
Sound
State
1
A
First sound of Om.
The very first of the letters of the alphabet-
in all languages
Waking
First state of Consciousness
2
U
The Middle sound
Dream
The Middle state
3
M
The Final sound
Deep-Sleep
The Final state
4
Silence
The inevitable between two successive Oms
Turiya
The state of Perfect Bliss

The Importance of Turiya

The law of memory is that the rememberer and the experiencer must be one and the same individual, or else memory is impossible. So, as we can remember all our experiences in all the 3 states, there must necessarily be a single common factor, which was a witness of all the happenings in all the 3 states. There must be some entity within us, who is present in the waking world, who moves and illumines the dream, who is a distant observer in the deep-sleep world, and yet who is not conditioned by any of these 3 realms. This entity , conceived as the fourth state 'Turiya', is the Real, the Changeless, the Intelligent Principle.

The A and U are as essential to the sound as M, or as the silence against which the sound appears. It would be a mistake to say that Om did not exist  while silence reigned; for it would be still potentially present even in the silence. The actual manifestation of Om is fleeting and evanescent; whereas the silence abides. The silence, indeed, is present elsewhere during a local pronunciation of Om - that is to say (by analogy) transcendentally, during the creation, manifestation and dissolution of the Universe.

If properly pronounced, this Om will represent in itself the whole phenomenon of sound production. No other word can do this. As Om is the nearest to God, and is indeed the first manifestation of Divine Wisdom, this Om is truly symbolic of God.

'Om' thus represents the entire manifested world and the unmanifest, and also that which lies beyond both the manifest and the unmanifest- the Brahman, which is the Changeless substratum for the changing objects of the world of experiences.

To every Mantra, 'Om' is added on. Without 'Om', no sacred-chant has its power. A Mantra has no life in it without the addition of the Pranava  'Om'.

The Shloka 13 in Chapter 8 of the Bhagavat Gita (starting thus "Om iti ekaksharam Brahma--") explains the importance of 'Om'. The meaning of the Shloka is : " Anyone uttering the indestructible mono syllable 'Om', the transcendental sound vibration of the Ultimate Truth, remembering me continuously; thus relinquishing his body in this way achieves the Supreme Goal".

Om...Namasivaya..Sivaya...Nama...Om..

God is Love spiritual wisdom logo

god is love“God is Love†is a common religious expression but in what way can we really say that

– God IS Love ?

One thing that people from all sorts of religious traditions would say is that God loves us. Different traditions might have different ways of describing God or the Divine but the message that God loves us is common to all. We might then go on and describe God’s love as an unconditional love that has no limits and no boundaries and is shared equally with all. Such thinking brings us to see that God is a loving God but is this the same as saying that “God is Love Well in a way the simple answer is yes, but we need to explore why this is so.

Think for a moment about an everyday situation which illustrates this problem. We know that we can get money from the bank because money is stored there. We might even say that “the bank is made of moneyâ€, but we know full well that the bank isn’t money.

Now we could easily view God just like that. We know we can get love from God, indeed we might even say that “God is made of love†but we stop short of believing that God is love because it doesn’t seem to make any real sense to us.

One way to try and move forward and make sense of this is to look at ourselves. If we are made in the image and likeness of God then it should be possible to see within ourselves something of the nature of God although what we see will be a very dim and limited reflection of the infinite Divine nature.

We love all sorts of things – partners, family, friends, hobbies, possessions and much more. But what tends to happen is that what we love the most becomes most important in our life to the point where our lives revolve about what we love most. Suppose we love the pursuit of wealth and its resulting possessions to the exclusion of all else. Gradually our whole life becomes totally absorbed by a focus on how to make money and yet more money. Money has become our whole purpose in living – it has become our life. By contrast we may make our family the focus of our love. Supporting and caring for our family then becomes the whole purpose in living – it has become our life.

We can see from these two examples that our love tends to show itself in the way we live, so much so, that we can describe our life in terms of what we love, indeed our life becomes our love and our love is our life. In our deepest and inmost being life and love are one and the same thing.

If it can be said of our human nature that love is our life then this likeness of God in us must first exist fully and perfectly in the Divine Itself. Thus we can begin to see that the Life that is God is Love. Now although it appears otherwise, we really have no life or love in ourselves. What we call our life and our love really come from God because God alone is the source of all life and all love. In God, Life Itself and Love Itself are one and the same thing. This is deep spiritual wisdom.

God is Love because God is Life.

Some Quotations

This is all that I've known for certain, that God is love. Even if I have been mistaken on this or that point: God is nevertheless love.   Soren Kierkegaard

God is love, and the ability to love is inborn in every living creature, most especially in human beings.   Sadhu Sundar Singh

In loving and serving, we prove that we have been created in the likeness of God, for God is love and when we love we are like God.   Mother Teresa

God alone is love itself, because he is life itself. Both we on earth and angels are life-receivers.   Emanuel Swedenborg

Lord Shiva Rudra along the Narmada

Rudra, the red eyed, gentle and fiery represents warmth and protection. Rudra, the red eyed shines through anything in the material world. Rudra the red eyed makes His presence felt no matter how uncanny the reality around. Rudra the red eyed, is there to be experienced if we try hard enough.

Fire is not as dangerous as it appears, Rudra is not as scary as he appears, Bhairava is not as violent as he is pictured. He is real, subtle and present in the pulse of life. What do I mean when I say this?

Rudra Shiva is not a treasure hunt or a well of information that once discovered is realized. No he is none of this. Rudra Shiva is the eye of life, the awakening being within myself, the consciousness, the fire of my soul, that has just started to burn. Rudra, the sound, brings vibration and heat of a higher kind, energy and life of a different nature, that needs to awaken, and mature with time. Rudra is vibration that if contemplated upon persistently reveals its nature slowly. Rudra, is the constant within us, the beat of the heart, the silenced thoughts that disappear to give way to pleasant imagination and high emotion when the Lord appears deep within the subconscious to be experienced. Rudra, is the light within, the sound energy within that silences all worry that clouds the imagination.

Rudra is that pulse within, you have it and I. We just need to try and He is there waiting to be awakened. Rudra is the blessing, he is the warmth and the fearlessness that makes us feel that this world, this maya is really quite trivial. Rudra is the subconscious that opens the inner world to us. Those ideas, those thoughts that I dont own, and those feelings that melt my heart pouring into tears that well out of my eyes, are these not an external expression of this awakening within myself?

My subconscious, the purity within me is where the Lord resides, as Bhikshatana, as Annapurni Mata, as Shankara, as Trayambaka, as Rudra. These are not just names attached with mythological stories, these are not just presentations of the Lord in human form, these are the very nature and energy of the supreme force Himself. And what if they appear within the vision of the subconscious to just bless the being, the human being, the limited human being that knows none, understands none, but fears all.

I am a speck in this ocean, I am a drop of life, and I am the 8th element, asleep lost and clouded in maya, I am part of Ashtamurti Shiva.

Om Bhavaya, Om Sarvaya, Om Isana, Om Tatpurusha, Om Rudra, Om Ughra, Om Bheema, Om Mahati,
Om Paramaeshwar, the eight formed Lord, who represents the elements of water, fire, wind, ether, earth, sun, moon and my mind, O Sadayojata, O Sadashiva, the Lord of all the directions, the single pulse of energy that guides this world, O red eyed Rudra, I bow to you humbly for granting me this vision. The single energy center, the red eyed Lord, so clear and pure, so warm and enveloping, why then are you feared? Why then are you called terrific, why then are you considered so violent when all I can see is tenderness in your glowing eyes!

Om Rudraya devaya Namaha|

I bow to the Lord of the devas, to Rudra, to the creator of spiritual sound, that is involked in his names, the spiritual energy that vibrates within my being when I contemplate on his name. This devotion looks so small, so meak, so insignificant in front of your greatness, your form. To the fiery Lord of Love, warmth and peace, I bow humbly, and surrender to your presence deep within my subconscious, my real world, my core, that vibrates with the name of Rudra Trayambaka Shiva.

To see the sun, the moon and fire is one thing, but to feel the presence of the three eyed Lord Rudra is yet another. The core of red, the eye of light, the eye of life, the eye of fiery energy, the eye of divinity is in eternal abstraction, hard to explain but fulfilling and overwhelming to experience. Its the feeling of heightened emotion that results in heavy droplets of tears, that flow out like pearls falling through space, enhancing the bliss within so high that the minds knows nothing else. This awakens pulsating heat within the heart, heat that stays giving warmth of a flame that can beat the external cold without cover. This is ecstacy, this is emotion, this is beyond logic of the known kind, this is beyond blind faith, this is pure love, this is real.

Rudraya Devaya Namaha||

Songs to Shiva 350px-MahadevShiva Shiva means “Auspicious One†He is described as the one who is completely pure, untainted by the world of form and temptations, uttering his name can bring salvation from the cycle of reincarnation. He is one of the three Gods of the Hindu trinity: Brahman, Vishnu and Shiva. Shiva is responsible for the creation and desolution of the universe. He is the eternal yogi, blissfully unaffected by maya (illusion). He destroys our attachments and delusions and brings our liberation. Third Eye: Shiva is often depicted with a third eye with which he burned Desire (KÄma) to ashes. The Ganga river flows from the matted hair of Shiva. Thus Shiva is called GangÄdhara ("Bearer of the river GangÄ") The Ganga,  considered the most sacred of all rivers in India is said to have made her abode in Shiva's hair. The legend of Bhagiratha states that when the sage of that name invoked the gods to send the divine Ganges to earth to relieve a drought and purify the remains of his ancestors, he was warned that the earth had not the capacity to withstand the descent of the Ganges from heaven, in pursuit of which he propitiated Siva to receive the Ganges upon her descent from heaven and release her with diminished force. Siva agreed to trap the youthful and mischievous Ganges in his matted locks and release her to the earth. It was thus, according to Hindu legend, that the Ganges came to be trapped in Siva's locks, and to be portrayed as flowing therefrom, in all representations of Siva Jai Shiva Shankara Jai Shiva Shankara Jai Shiva Shankara Jai Shiva Shankar Hari Om Jai Shiva Shankara Parameshwara Jai Shiva Shankar Hari Om Om Namah Shivaya Om Namah Shivaya Om Namah Shivaya Om Namah Shivaya Shiva Shiva Shiva Shambo Shiva Shiva Shiva Shambo Shiva Shiva Shiva Shambo Shiva Shiva Shiva Shambo Shiva Shiva Shiva Shambo Mahadeva Shambo Mahadeva Shambo Mahadeva Shambo Mahadeva Shambo Om Namah Shivaya Om Namah Shivaya

Kali

Characteristics : Destroyer, Compassionate
Other Names : Bhadrakali, Rudrani, Dakshinakali, Aadya
Abode : Cremation Grounds
Weapon : Sword
Mula Mantra : Om Kreem Kalikaye Namah

Goddess Kali
Kali is one of the many forms of Shakti. Maha Kaali is the fiercest of all goddesses of Hinduism. The word Kali has its roots in the Sanskrit word "Kaal", which means time. And nothing escapes from time. Goddess Kali is sometimes referred as the goddess of death. But actually Kali brings the death of the ego. Even in the scriptures, she has killed demons but not anyone else. Kali is also not associated with Yama (the Hindu God of Death). Kali is considered a form of mother too. Maa Kali is one of the few Goddesses who are celibate and practice renunciation.

Hindu Goddess KaliGoddess Kali and Lord Shiva
Goddess Kali and Lord Shiva, both are regarded to inhabit cremation grounds. Devotees go to these places to meditate with the purpose of overcoming the ego. The cremation grounds emphasize the idea that the body is temporary. Kali and Shiva are known to stay in cremation grounds because it is our attachment to the body that gives rise to the ego. Kali and Shiva give the idea of liberation by dissolving the illusion of the ego. The corporeal frame ultimately vanishes but the soul still remains. This is emphasized by the scene in the cremation grounds.

Maa Kali - The Compassionate Goddess
Maha Kaali is the most compassionate of all the forms of goddesses as she provides salvation or liberation to her children. Kali is equivalent to Shiva because both of them are the destroyers of evil fake and unreal. It is considered that with the glimpse of Maa Kali, ego trembles with terror seeing its own eventual demise in her.

People who are attached to their ego would not be able to receive the idea of Kali and she will appear in a wrathful form to them. But people, who are engaged in spirituality, removing the illusion of the ego, will find Maha Kaali in a different form. Maa Kali will appear as sweet, affectionate, and overflowing with perplexing love for them.

Maa Kali - The Image
Goddess Kali has four arms and hands depicting her immense strength. In two of her hands, she holds a sword and a fresh severed head, representing a great battle in which she defeated the demon Raktabija. The other two hands are there to bless her true devotees, suggesting that they will be saved as she will guide them here and in the hereafter.

Kali wears a garland made of 52 skulls and a skirt made of dismembered arms because the ego comes out of identification with the body. It suggests that physical body is false and spirit is the only reality. Her black or sometimes dark blue skin represents the womb of the unmanifest from which all of creation is born and into which all of creation will ultimately return. Therefore, the concepts of color, light, dark, good or bad do not apply to her as she is the pure, un-manifested energy, the Adishakti.

Goddess Kali is seen standing with her one feet on Lord Shiva who is pure formless awareness Sat-Chit-Ananda (being-consciousness-bliss) while Kali represents "form" eternally sustained by the underpinning of pure awareness.

Mayan Prophecy 2012: Entering Our Galactic Day

Many of us are aware of the Mayan calendar but not many people truly understand what it means and how it works. Yes the calendar does end on December 21, 2012, but what does that mean? How does it come to that? What is their calendar based off of?

The Mayans had a very precise understanding of our solar system's cycles and believed that these cycles coincided with our spiritual and collective consciousness. The most significant of which has much to do with the 2012 prophecies. In the following writing, we will walk through the main details of their prophecies surrounding the 2012 transition. How the transition takes place (from an astronomical perspective), what it means for us, and when the cycles take place. We'll start with the basic prophecies and later move deeper into the explanation of the cycles.

The Mayans prophesied that from 1999 we have 13 years to realize the changes in our conscious attitude to stray from the path of self-destruction and instead move onto a path that opens our consciousness to integrate us with all that exists.

The Mayans knew that our Sun, or Kinich-Ahau, every so often synchronized with the enormous central galaxy. And from this central galaxy received a 'spark' of light which causes the Sun to shine more intensely producing what our scientists call 'solar flares' as well as changes in the Sun's magnetic field. The Mayans say that this happens every 5,125 years. But also that this causes a displacement in the earths rotation, and because of this movement great catastrophes would be produced.

The Mayans believed the universal processes, like the 'breathing' of the galaxy, are cycles that never change. What changes is the consciousness of man that passes through it. Always in a process toward more perfection. Based on their observations, the Mayans predicted that from the initial date of the start of their civilization, 4 Ahau, 8 Cumku which is 3113 B.C., after one cycle being completed 5,125 years in their future, December 21st, 2012. The Sun, having received a powerful ray of synchronizing light from the center of the galaxy, would change its polarity which would produce a great cosmic event that would propel human kind to be ready to cross into a new era, The Golden Age. It is after this, that the Mayans say we will be ready to go through the door that was left by them, transforming our civilization based on fear to a vibration much higher in harmony.

Only from our individual efforts could we avoid the path to great cataclysm that our planet will suffer to start a new era, the sixth cycle of the Sun. The Mayan civilization was in the fifth cycle of the Sun, and there were four other great civilizations before them that were destroyed by great natural disasters. They believed that each cycle was just one stage in the collective consciousness of humanity.

In the last cataclysm of the Mayans, the civilization was destroyed by a great flood that left little survivors of which were their descendants. They believed that having known the end of their cycle, mankind would prepare for what is to come in the future and it is because of this that they would have preserved the dominant species; the human race. They say that coming changes will permit us to make a quantum leap forward in the evolution of our consciousness to create a new civilization that would manifest great harmony and compassion to all humankind.

Their first prophecy talks about 'The Time of No-Time'. A period of 20 years, which they call a Katún. The last 20 years of the Sun's cycle of 5,125 years. This cycle is from 1992 - 2012. I'll explain this in greater detail later. They predicted that during these times, solar winds would become more intense and could be seen on the Sun. This would be a time of great realization and great change for mankind. And it would be our own lack of preservation and contamination of the planet that would contribute to these changes. According to the Mayans, these changes would happen so that mankind comprehends how the universe works so we could advance to superior levels, leaving behind superficial materialism and liberating ourselves from suffering.

The Mayans say, that seven years after the start of Katún, which is to say 1999, we would enter a time of darkness which would force us to confront our own conduct. The say that this is the time when mankind will enter 'The Sacred Hall of Mirrors'. Where we will look at ourselves and analyze our behaviors with ourselves, with others, with nature and with the planet in which we live. A time in which all of humanity, by individual conscious decisions, decides to change and eliminate fear and lack of respect from all of our relationships. The Mayans prophesied that the start of this period would be marked by a solar eclipse on August 11, 1999, known to them as 13 Ahau, 8 Cauac. And would coincide with an unprecedented planetary alignment, the 'Grand Cross' alignment. This would be the last 13 years of the Katón period. The last opportunity for our civilization to realize the changes that are coming at the moment of our spiritual regeneration.

For the Mayans, everything is numbers and the time of the 13 sacred numbers started in August 1999. They predicted that along with the eclipse, the forces of nature would act like a catalyst of changes so accelerated and with such magnitude that mankind would be powerless against them. Also, that our technologies in which we rely on so much would begin to fail us. We would no longer be able to learn from our civilization in the way that we are organized as a society. They said that our internal, spiritual development would require a better place along with a better way to interact with more respect and compassion.

The first prophecies were attained by their study of our Sun. The Mayans discovered that the entire solar system moved. That even our universe has its own cycles. Repetitive periods which begin and end like our day and night. These discoveries lead to the understanding that our solar system rotates on an ellipse that brings our solar system closer and further from the center of the galaxy. In other words, according to the Mayans, our Sun and all of its planets rotate in cycles in relation to the center of the galaxy or Hunab-Kú, the central light of the galaxy. It takes 25,625 years for our solar system to make one cycle on this ellipse. One complete cycle is called a galactic day. The cycle is divided into two halves similar to our day and night. The half closest to the central light, is our solar system's 'day' and the half furthest away is its 'night'. Each day and each night lasts 12,800 years. Which is to say, the central galaxy is the Sun for our entire solar system.

The Mayans discovered that every grand cycle has its minor cycles, that carry the same characteristics. One galactic day of 25,625 years is divided into five cycles of 5,125 years. The first cycle is the galactic morning. When our solar system is just coming out of the darkness to enter the light. The second cycle is the mid-day. When our solar system is closest to the central light. The third cycle is the afternoon. When our solar system begins to come out of the light. The fourth cycle is the late-night. When our solar system has entered its furthest cycle from the central light. And the fifth and last cycle is night before dawn. When are solar system is in its last cycle of darkness before starting again. This is the cycle we are currently coming out of.

The Mayan prophecy tells us that in 1999, our solar system began to leave the end of the fifth cycle which started in 3113 B.C. and that we find ourselves in the morning of our galactic day, exiting darkness and on the verge of being in plain day of our central galaxy in 2012. They say that at the beginning and end of these cycles, which is to say, every 5,125 years, the central sun or light of the galaxy emits a ray of light so intense and so brilliant that it illuminates the entire universe. It is from this burst of light that all of the Suns and planets sync. The Mayans compare this burst to the pulse of the universe, beating once every 5,125 years. It is these pulses that mark the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next. Each pulse lasting 20 years, a Katún.

So we come back to what they call 'The Time of No Time'. It is an evolutionary period, short but intense, inside the grand cycles where great changes take place to thrust us into a new age of evolution as individuals and as mankind.

Well what do you think?

Be honest with yourself

  • Accept responsibility for your own actions; don't blame others.
  • Be honest about your feelings.
  • Face issues as they arise.
  • If you are considering lying, try to think of the consequences.
  • When confronted with a situation, think of others.

Proverbs and maxims

Hinduism Symbols

(Hinduism A Perspective)

  • praNava / aum
  • Revered by all religions of Hinduism. This is the primeval sound Om. This mystic sound is so important that there are few worship without this. The archanas done at the Hindu temples include this for each of the mantra chanted. The holy vedas also start with this. This mantra is one of the renowned mantra for meditation. This sound represent the Supreme Divinity.

  • lingam
  • The prime symbol of worship for Shaivites. (In fact the name itself means symbol). This is broad in the middle and conical towards the top. This is the form of flame. In Shaivite philosophy the God is formless. Due to the Grace on the souls for the easy comprehension of the Divine and liberation the God appeared in the form of a Flame. This flame is what is worshiped as lingam in stone and other forms that make the worship easier. This is considered more sacred than form worship by Shaivites.

  • Holy Ash / bhasma/ vibUti
  • www.shaivam.org

The three bands one could see on the foreheads of the gods and goddesses. This three bands are worn by the Shaivites and the other religions in that family (shakta, kaumAra, gANApatya). This symbol is called tripunDra (three band). As the God appeared as a Supreme Flame (This need not be confused with agni. agni becomes one of the aspects of God but not the Supreme itself), in the Shaivite religion, (refer to lingam above) naturally Ash becomes the symbol that indicates the association with that param jyoti (Supreme flame).

  • rudrAxa
  • rudra + axa translates to the eye of rudra. This is a bead from a tree. This is considered to have emanated from the eye of Lord Shiva when He burnt the tripura asuras. This is one of the holy symbols worn by Shaivites along with Holy Ash. This is worn as a single bead or as garlands of beads.

  • tilaka
  • This is the dot most of the Hindus have at the eye-brow junction. This could be of sandal or red kumkum or a mix of both. This junction is one of the very significant chakra, called in spiritual terms AGYA chakra. This is a very sensitive point. So the tilaka is kept at this point.

  • shrI chUrNa
  • The vertical three lines (or at times single red line) that is worn by the Vaishnavites is called shrI chUrNa. The two outer lines will be in the white color and the middle one in the red. The red line is normally with kumkum or the red sand at the base of the tulsi plant. This custom has been introduced in the later parts of time by rAmAnuja as vaiShNavite symbolism. vaiAhNavas not belonging to rAmAnuja sampradAya (for example mAdhvas) do not follow this custom.

  • nandi
  • nandhi

This is the Holy Bull - the vehicle and the flag of Lord Shiva. So this is the emblem of Shaivites. On the wall of the Shaivite temples, in the flags, in the message headers and many other articles this emblem could be found. The ancience of this emblem will be very evident from the fact that this emblem has been found in the excavations of harappa mahanjadaro (the so-called Indus valley civilisation sites). According to Shaivite scriptures bull represents the dharma (justice).

  • trishUla
  • The tri headed spear (trident) - one of the renowned weapon of Lord Shiva. So this is the second important emblem of Shaivites after nandi. As the Goddess shakti also holds this trident, this is the symbol that is held high by the devotees of shakti as well.

  • shanka chakra
  • The counch called pAnchajanya and the disc called sudarshana in the hands of Lord ViShNu are the important symbols of Vaishnavites. These two are printed as emblems in the artefacts associated with Vaishnava.

  • Spear / vEl
  • The spear is the renowned weapon of Lord Skandha. So this is a very respected symbol of the devotees of Lord Subramanya.

Worship

Puja

Hindu worship, or puja, involves images (murtis), prayers (mantras) and diagrams of the universe (yantras).

Central to Hindu worship is the image, or icon, which can be worshipped either at home or in the temple.

Statue of the elephant-headed Ganesh, surrounded by flowers, plants and offerings

A shrine to Ganesh

Individual rather than communal

Hindu worship is primarily an individual act rather than a communal one, as it involves making personal offerings to the deity.

Worshippers repeat the names of their favourite gods and goddesses, and repeat mantras. Water, fruit, flowers and incense are offered to god.

Worship at home

The majority of Hindu homes have a shrine where offerings are made and prayers are said.

A shrine can be anything: a room, a small altar or simply pictures or statues of the deity.

Family members often worship together. Rituals should strictly speaking be performed three times a day. Some Hindus, but not all, worship wearing the sacred thread (over the left shoulder and hanging to the right hip). This is cotton for the Brahmin (priest), hemp for the Kshatriya (ruler) and wool for the vaishya (merchants).

Indian women and children climbing the steps to a temple

At the temple for a festival

Temple worship

At a Hindu temple, different parts of the building have a different spiritual or symbolic meaning.

  • The central shrine is the heart of the worshipper
  • The tower represents the flight of the spirit to heaven
  • A priest may read, or more usually recite, the Vedas to the assembled worshippers, but any "twice-born" Hindu can perform the reading of prayers and mantras

Religious rites

Hindu religious rites are classified into three categories:

  • Nitya
    • Nitya rituals are performed daily and consist in offerings made at the home shrine or performing puja to the family deities.
  • Naimittika
    • Naimittika rituals are important but only occur at certain times during the year, such as celebrations of the festivals, thanksgiving and so on.
  • Kamya
    • Kamya are rituals which are "optional" but highly desirable. Pilgrimage is one such.

Worship and pilgrimage

Pilgrimage is an important aspect of Hinduism. It's an undertaking to see and be seen by the deity.

Indian women making offering to Shiva on the Ganges, Calcutta, India

Indian women worshipping Shiva on the Ganges

Popular pilgrimage places are rivers, but temples, mountains, and other sacred sites in India are also destinations for pilgrimages, as sites where the gods may have appeared or become manifest in the world.

Kumbh Mela

Once every 12 years, up to 10 million people share in ritual bathing at the Kumbh Mela festival at Allahabad where the waters of the Ganges and Jumna combine.

Hindus from all walks of life gather there for ritual bathing, believing that their sins will be washed away.

The bathing is followed by spiritual purification and a ceremony which secures the blessings of the deity.

River Ganges

The river Ganges is the holiest river for Hindus.

Varanasi

This city, also known as Benares, is situated on the banks of the Ganges and is one of the most important pilgrimage centres.

It is said to be the home of Lord Shiva where legend has it that his fiery light broke through the earth to reach the heavens.

A Hindu who dies at Varanasi and has their ashes scattered on the Ganges is said to have experienced the best death possible.

How to have peace in your mind?

Step 1

First, let go of trying to make everything and everyone in your life--perfect or to do as you desire. Everyone has choices, so everyone is going to see and do things differently.

Step 2

Try to be a "wondering" kind of person instead of a "hoping" kind of person. Wondering, when you think about it, offers more possibilities than hoping because when one hopes, there is always the hint that something could go wrong.

Step 3

Begin to trust in yourself. If you find it hard to trust in your judgment, make a list of good qualities that you have and then after reading those good qualities, realize that you have the potential and inside material to make good decisions.

Step 4

Tap your inside power that is within you. Everyone has power but some don't realize that they have it. Power comes from confidence, knowing that you are capable of handling any kind of situation. And, you can, but you must first believe that you're a child of God and that with prayer and belief in Him, you "can do all things."

Step 5

Having faith in God and knowing that He has it all in control even when we don't is very comforting to me. He has already overcome the world,- no matter what comes our way - we win!

Step 6

Keep noisy people out your business this is one thing I could never say enough. You do not have to be reassured by everybody that you are doing right. If you want to do things correctly do your research but do it quietly. Remember great minds think for themselves.

Step 7

Never hang among mean, or sarcastic people. These people are what I call drama which is one thing you want to stay away from. Because the more you hang around these people the more you become them. And the more you become them you will be labeled as one of them.

Step 8

Realize that nobody's perfect only God is. As you continue to live you will make mistakes but it only makes you human. Nobody said life would be easy but we must take the needed steps to correct what is wrong, and make it right. For their is nothing more peaceful that being correct for it builds confidence.

Step 9

Having inner peace is not as easy as one would think. With hectic schedules and all the responsibilities one has and challenges they face, sometimes peace can be hard to come. You must work for it.

Step 10

Taking time to pray and acknowledge God's presence in our life is important. He never leaves nor forsakes us and He is our shelter in the storm and our light in the darkness. Take time to set aside each day to realize that no matter what life throws your way, you can have an inner peace because He is there to protect you.

Step 11

Focus on the wonders around you--the earth, sky, stars, miracles and good people. Think of the good that is going on in your life and those around you. If nothing really good is going on in your life right now, think of how you could initiate some goodness, some happiness for yourself or perhaps someone close who could use some hope or happiness. Maybe there is something you could do to make life better?

Step 12

Lastly, focus on your blessings. Everyone is blest in some way. Find out and write down what your blessings are and then be thankful.

Through her extraordinary acts of love and self-sacrifice, Mata Amritanandamayi,
or Amma (Mother) as she is known, has endeared herself to millions of people
around the world.

Tenderly caressing everyone who comes to her, holding them close to her heart in
a loving embrace, Amma shares her boundless love with all-regardless of their
beliefs, who they are or why they have come to her. In this simple yet powerful
way, Amma is transforming the lives of countless people, helping their hearts to
blossom, one embrace at a time. In the past 38 years, Amma has physically hugged
more than 28 million people from all parts of the world. In some places, she has
embraced 40 to 50 thousand people in a single programme, sitting almost 24 hours
to do so.

Her tireless spirit of dedication to uplifting others has inspired a vast
network of charitable activities through which people are discovering the beauty
and sense of peace that come from selflessly serving others.

Amma teaches that the Divine exists in everything, sentient and insentient.
Perceiving this underlying unity in all things is not only the essence of
spirituality but also the means to end all suffering. Amma's teachings are
universal. Whenever she is asked about her religion, she replies that her
religion is Love. She does not ask anyone to believe in God or to change their
faith, but only to inquire into their own real nature, and to believe in
themselves.

You are pure awareness. The world is an illusion, nothing more. When you
understand this fully, Desire falls away. You find peace. For indeed! There is
nothing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Perfect renunciation is difficult to attain without performing action. But the
wise, following the path of selfless service, quickly reach the Brahman.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Those who follow the path of service, who have completely purified themselves
and conquered their senses and self-will, see the Self in all creatures and are
untouched by any activity they perform.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Liberation cannot be achieved except through perceiving the identity of the
individual spirit with the Universal Spirit. Atman and Brahman are identical.
Their essence is pure Consciousness.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
It is better to see God in everything than to try and figure it out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
O Lord of Love, may I enter into you, and may you reveal yourself unto me, The
pure One masquerading as many. You are the refuge of all devotees. I am your
devotee. Make me your own.

The damaru, an hour-glass shape drum
His trishula, the trident, symbol of the three worlds
A crescent moon bound into his hair from which streams the river Ganga

He sits on a tiger skin
a water pot
ash, the remains of the dissolution of the universe

he is identified with the star Sirius
He is the supreme hunter.
His great bow is called Pinaka

Shiva can be interpreted as meaning "One who purifies everyone by the
utterance of His name" or the Pure One, that is, one who is not affected
by the three gunas characteristics matter.

Shiva is the third form of God as the Destroyer, while Brahma and Vishnu
are creator and preserver, respectively. However, even though He
represents destruction, He is viewed as a positive force (The Destroyer
of Evil), since creation follows destruction. Shiva is the only Ultimate
Reality.

The water flowing from his locks is a depiction of the River Ganga. In
Hindu mythology, when Ganga descended from the heavens, the Earth could
not bear her flow so Lord Shiva agreed to bear it. Lord Shiva's skin
turned bluish as he drank the Poison that came out of the churning of
the oceans.

without end . His abode is called Kailash. His holy mount is Nandi, the
Bull. His attendant is named Bhadra. Shiva is usually represented by the
Shiva lingam. Shiva and Parvati are the parents of Karttikeya and
Ganesha.

As Nataraja, Shiva is the Lord of the Dance, and also symbolizes the
dance of the Universe/Nature, with all its delicately balanced heavenly
bodies and natural laws. At times, he is also symbolized as doing his
great dance of destruction, called Taandav, the dissolution of the
universe.

Brahmamuhurta: The best time for meditation

16 Jun 2009, 0000 hrs IST, DISCOURSE: SWAMI SIVANANDA

Brahmamuhurta is the morning period between 3.30 a.m. and 5.30 a.m. It is suitable for meditation. After a good night's sleep, the mind is
Meditation
Brahmamuhurta: The best time for meditation (Getty Images)
refreshed, calm and serene. There is the preponderance of sattva or purity in the mind at this time, as well as in the atmosphere.

The mind is like a blank sheet of paper, free from worldly samskaras or impressions. Raga-dvesha currents have not yet deeply entered the mind. The mind can be moulded easily. You can infuse it with divine thoughts.

Yogis, Paramahamsas, Sannyasins, aspirants and Rishis start their meditation during the Brahma muhurta; sending their vibrations throughout the world, benefiting all. Meditation will come by itself without any effort.

In the winter it is not necessary that you should take a cold bath. A mental bath will suffice. Imagine and feel, "I am taking a bath now in the sacred Triveni at Prayag or Manikarnika at Benares." Remember the pure Atman. Repeat the formula, "I am the ever pure Soul." This is the most powerful wisdom-bath in Jnana-Ganga. This is highly purifying. It burns all sins. Answer the calls of nature quickly. Clean your teeth. Do not waste much time in morning ablutions. The Brahma muhurta will pass away quickly. You must utilise this precious time in Japa and meditation. Sit in Siddha, Padma or Sukha Asana. Try to climb the supreme height of Brahmn, the peak of divine glory and splendour.

If you are not in the habit of getting up early, use an alarm timepiece. Once the habit is established, there will be no difficulty. The subconscious mind will become your willing and obedient servant to wake you up at the particular time.

Cultivate the habit of answering the calls of nature as soon as you get up from bed. If you suffer from constipation do meditation as soon as you get up. You can answer the calls of nature after finishing your morning meditation with the help of a cup of hot milk.

As soon as you get up from bed, do Japa and meditation. This is important. After finishing your Japa and meditation you can take to the practice of Asana, Pranayama and study of Gita and other religious books.

Every Sandhya time, or dusk, is also favourable for meditation. During Brahma muhurta and dusk, the Sushumna Nadi flows readily. You will enter into deep meditation and Samadhi without much effort when Sushumna Nadi flows. That is the reason why rishis, yogis and scriptures speak very highly of these two periods of time. When the breath flows through both nostrils, know that the Sushumna is working. Whenever the Sushumna functions, sit for meditation and enjoy the inner peace of Atman or soul.

Repeat some divine stotras, hymns or guru stotras or chant OM 12 times, or do kirtan for five minutes before you start your Japa and meditation. This will quickly elevate you mind and drive off laziness and sleepiness. Do sirshasana or Sarvangasana or any other asana for five minutes. Do pranayama for five minutes. This also will make you quite fit for the practice of meditation and remove laziness and sleepy condition.

It is Brahma muhurta now! Do not snore. Do not roll in the bed. Throw away the blanket.
and get up at 3.30 am

Namaste

Namaste is the most popular Hindu greeting, performed by pressing the two hands together and holding them near the heart with the hands together and holding them near the heart with the head gently bowed as one says "Namaste". The gesture of holding both hands together is called the Anjala Mudra. There is a great symbolism behind this greeting. Both hands depict a duality like the Yin and Yang or positive and negative forces, and bringing the hands together to a Hindu affirms the singleness or Advaita in the world. The whole act communicates, "You and I are one. I salute, honour and worship the God within you." It also means, "I prostrate myself before you who is the mirror-image of me, with body, mind and soul".

In Sanskrit, the word Namaste means, "to bow in reverential salutation." It means "to you". So Namaste in a nutshell means, "I bow to you". This greeting makes a Hindu remind himself that God is everywhere and in every human being we meet anywhere at any time.
