Hi Rob -
The Topaz 20 comes with basic software, one should be able to open a vip and
save in the VP3 format, I do have a step above the basic software but I believe
I was able to use VIP and HUS designs before I purchased it. I will look into
the manual when I am home and figure this out for sure.

[mod note: Looking forward to finding out, Patryce! Thank you!

Hi Rob, The software to convert most formats to the VP3 format comes with every
Designer machine including the Topaz models.  This software is in a disc that
says 4D or 5D Organizer and Quick Fonts.  This is all anyone needs to make
designs compatible with their Designer machine.  If the machine was purchased
second hand (through Ebay or whatever), they may not have gotten the required
disc.  If that  is the case, they will need one of the Husqvarna Viking software
packages to convert designs.  All of the Software packages contain Organizer and
Quick Fonts, but it is not sold by itself.  If you have questions about any
Husqvarna Viking Embroidery machine, please contact me.  I am the manager of a
Viking Sewing Gallery and if I don't know the answer, I can find out for you.
Sincerely, Shelli

I bought a Topaz 20 a few weeks ago and I love it. I did not buy their software,
I found lots of free programs on line to do what I needed! It does come with a
design organizer and that will convert any designs to vp3. I have transferred
many design formats to the organizer and just simply convert the design I want
to use to vp3. Very quick and easy! If you need any other info, let me know. I
would love to share! Nancy C.

Hey Rob, I already purchased & LOVE the DBS threads, but I am working on a few
projects that will take more than a few spools of thread each. Is it possible
for us Canadians to purchase the DBS Thread by individual spools? I don't
want to have to switch brands as I find the DBS thread my favorite.

I have a reader/writer, but the program to make it work will not work with
the new operating system on the computer. So, be certain that you have not
only the R/W, but a computer program that will enable the transfer of files
from the computer to the R/W AND work with your operating system. I'm
not at the point to give up and finding a way to make my R/W work, so it is
not available. However, I didn't want you to get the box and then be unable
to use it. Take care and God bless you. Corey

First of all, do you or would you know someone that would know a place to get
this done? And ... being the dunce I am .. what is the best kind of material

I looked at Spoonflower Fabrics .. have you ever used them or know anything

I also read about this place http://www.robertkaufman.com/manufacturers/ but you
need to have $$$ lots of <<< said dineros to print a run with them.

Ha! I can tell her I know of Robert Kaufman fabrics as I have 2 quilt tops I

I did this for my Singer XL-6000 and it worked perfectly:
Purchased an USB Card Reader/Writer by Gear for the Smart Card. They
probably make one to fit whatever card the Husqvarna uses.
Purchased Sew What Pro from S & S Computing and used the Card Writer feature
to put designs on the card. It will write all of the popular formats, including
HUS. You can download a trial version.

I paid more for the Smart Media Card than I did for the USB Reader/Writer. All
in all, less than $50 for both.

Just a thought.

Several of you have emailed me - with the instructions on how to print on
fabric... Forgive me for not being more clear.

My friend is a celebrated Photographer in Canada -and she wants to have fabric
created with her photographs on it... not just a home job - but to sell
commercially as panels, I would think!

She sent me this - this morning:

"I am thinking of just trying a few pillows and maybe bags or something in the
gallery for something different, I would LOVE to do a set of sheers out of my
Reflection shot, but it needs one image printed huge and and I don't see that
they do this."

So, we are talking fabric companies, I would think....

Janette, First thanks for responding to my mail, now, I only need the
reader/writer as I have the card. I live in Michigan. Any way you could get an
estimate of the shipping costs? I am sure it would fit in the small shipping box
(if it fits we ship) from the post office for about $5.00. As it is an old unit
I can't spend a large price for it. It would have to be in good working order.
My old one died on me. I have a Designer SE with 4D soft ware but it won't
accept the Hus format for some reason. Thanks Jan

Ok..so I cannot seem to get away from this topic of having the photos made into
fabric to sell (as in Robert Kaufman, etc)..

A lil FYI here - just learned the photo she wants to be printed onto fabric (she
wants this one on sheer fabric - she thinks they would look great as sheer
curtains) - has won an award:

"I just found now that one of my photos won the 2012 International Women's
Exhibit and is being shown at the Central Library Gallery at One Margret
Mitchell Street, Atlanta, Georgia. (see images here:
http://womeninfocusatlanta.com/virtural-exhibits/index.php/photos/1.html)"

It would be this photo:
http://womeninfocusatlanta.com/virtural-exhibits/pg_images/20120221_7791_4748886\
996.jpg

So, on to my next request!

This photo will be on exhibit at the Central Library for the month of March. My
friend would really like to know how it is being exhibited - and since she is in
British Columbia - she will not be able to attend!

Does anyone live in Atlanta and might be able to scoot over and take some pics?
That would be awesome, if possible.

You could send them to me - robnewt AT gmail DOT com

Thanks so much!!!

If she is in Canada she should check with fabric land about having her print put
to cloth. Www.fabricland.ca. They have their own brand of fabric and is a
national store across Canada. Another city in Ontario to look into for fabrics
and printing is Hamilton. That city has a big fabric industry. Our church choir
found fabric there that suited us for robes but the colour was wrong. We were
able to get two entire bolts redyed to the colour we needed. I know dye and
print are different but I would imagine that they would go hand in hand in a
fabric company. Sorry I have no names of places in Hamilton, but a google search
maybe worth a look.

My friend would really like to know how it is being exhibited - and since she is
in British Columbia - she will not be able to attend!

Did you go into the properties and tell your new computer to open the
program(card reader) up as a lower version of windows? When I switched to
windows7 I had to change settings all the time for programs at first as they
weren't compatible with seven.

Oh Rob! If I hadn't had ankle surgery on Friday I'd more than happy to do
it. I'm only a couple of hours away, could get photos, visit grandbabies
and get to a couple of quilt shops.

So sorry!! Please keep us updated on this adventure.

Hugs!

[mod note: Sandy you get better. And, I don't think I would drive into Atlanta
- did it last year for a Bob Seger concert - and it was HORRIBLE!!! LOL...
Get better!

Rob,
I googled CUSTOM SCREEN PRINT FABRIC and found several online. Some are more
commercial than others, meaning they are not interested in small runs. At least
one does small runs. I would expect that the run will be 25.00 a yard or more,
but if it is the picture I saw in the display, she is so right. It will be
beautiful as sheers on a window. These were not the t-shirt places, only look
at ones that show and talk about fabrics by the yard.

[moderator's note:
Jane - thank you so much! Why did I not think of screen printing? Doh...
THIS is why I come to this list with my questions. You all are a wealth of
information.
I consider you all my own personal set of encyclopedias! <grin>

Rob:

That is a wonderful picture. Where did you take it?
I would hope that they put it into a Matt and frame.
It really is a great picture, invoked my childhood.
Thank you so much for sharing it.

Holly

[moderator's note:
Holly, Oh I wish I was that talented. NO, that was taken by a friend of mine who
lives in British Columbia, Canada. We met eons ago when we both lived on a
remote island in the Bahamas. We became chosen sisters over the years. Her
work is breathtaking.

Hi Jan

If you have a Designer SE, you do not need a reader/writer. the designer SE
can use most memory sticks. Your SE should have come with a cd that will allow
you to convert other design formats to VIP or VP3 (preferred format). Contact
your local dealer, if you don't have your cd. If you don't have a dealer, you
can email me through the yahoo group, and I'll help you find a dealer who is
local to you. I am a Husqvarna dealer in Ontario.

Lise
