Greetings, all,

The August 2011 newsletter is up on our site:

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/august2011.php

A reminder that, as in years past, August is Akallabeth in August! During this month, we encourage our members to step out of their First Age comfort zones and try their hand at writing Second Age stories. In celebration of the writers who regularly work within the Second Age, we have included a list of their stories in the newsletter and encourage readers to check out a few! Lastly, two years ago, we ran an Akallabeth in August event, and our group's talented authors and artists put together a collection of stories spanning the entire Second Age. If you find your Second Age inspiration a little thin, some of the incredible pieces included in this project might entice the muses!

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/akallabeth-in-august/

In keeping with our Akallabeth in August theme, this month's character biography, written by Marta, is about Sauron, with a focus on his actions in the Second Age. As Marta points out, at first glance, Sauron presents the impression of a convenient villain lacking the depth of some of Tolkien's other bad boys, but delving deeper into his history in the Second Age reveals a character of greater complexity than a mere evil overlord. Marta's biography is comprehensive, thought-provoking, and well worth a read!

And, of course, we have news from within the SWG and from groups beyond our own, as well as a list of the stories posted to the archive in July and our monthly challenges.

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/august2011.php

Enjoy!

Subject: Help Wanted! Season of Writing Dangerously Banners Needed
dawnfelagund
Send Email Send Email

Hi, all,

Believe it or not, we are in the final third of the Season of Writing Dangerously. Time flies! I hope it has been a productive time for participants (or that the realization that the season is almost past will spur those of you who, like me, work best under time pressure. ;)

We need help creating banners and icons for participants, winners, and cheerleaders for the Season of Writing Dangerously. Anyone who wants to do so is welcome to help out.

--We need banners for winners, participants, and cheerleaders. The banner should make clear which it is for, i.e., "Season of Writing Dangerously Participant," "Season of Writing Dangerously Winner," or "Season of Writing Dangerously Cheerleader." You can change the wording, if you prefer, but please make sure that "Season of Writing Dangerously" or "SOWD" appears somewhere.

--There are no size restrictions on banners but remember that icons used on LJ/DW must be 100x100 pixels or smaller.

--Please save your file as a JPG, GIF, or PNG. If possible, use a save-for-web feature to keep the file sizes small.

--Please avoid sexual nudity, blood and gore, and extreme violence.

--Important!! If you use artwork, photographs, or other images that do not belong to you, they must be in the public domain or licensed for non-commercial use with modification or you must have permission from the copyright holder to use this images. We cannot allow copyright notices, watermarks, or other marks of ownership on the banners, so if this is a condition of using the artwork, we will not be able to accept the banner.

--Also important!! In making banners for this project, you are granting us the right to use your banner, as well as any artwork on the banner. Your banner will be freely available for SOWD participants to use on their personal journals, blogs, profiles, and webpages. We will not remove your banner, nor we will make changes to it at a later date. In other words, if you worry that you'll be grimacing in three-year's time at what you then regard as poor-quality work, give strong consideration as to whether you're willing to share it because we will not change or remove it.

--Although we are a Silmarillion group and most participants are working on Silmarillion-inspired projects, we do have participants working in all eras of Tolkien's world, so banners based on LotR and TH are welcome as well! Most importantly, have fun and be creative!

If you have questions, please comment on this post or email us at moderator AT silmarillionwritersguild.org. You can also send finished banners to that address.

Best regards,

Dawn

Greetings, all!

This month's newsletter is a bit delayed with my apologies--between hurricanes and starting back to school, Real Life (tm) stood between me and my time to put the pieces together! As always, sincerest thank yous go to Oshun, Angelica, and Rhapsody, who write the content!

The new newsletter is here:

In site news, we have some updates on the Season of Writing Dangerously. We continue to seek banner-makers willing to help us create rewards for participants, winners, and cheerleaders for this event. Finally, we left off two of Keiliss's stories from last month's Akallabeth in August list--apologies to Kei! Please go check out her always-incredible work.

Oshun has written this month's biography on Ecthelion, whose popularity with fans belies the few mentions he receives in the text. As one of Tolkien's oldest characters--he appears in the earliest version of The Silmarillion--Oshun dug deep to find all of the information she could on him and create another fine biography for our References section.

As always, we have a list of August's new stories, current challenges, and news from beyond the SWG--including a new Tolkien podcast and a call for betas and artists for a Big Bang challenge, as well as announcements from challenges and contests.

Enjoy!

Hi, all,

The October edition of our monthly newsletter has been posted!

In addition to news from within and beyond the SWG, this month's newsletter includes a brand-new challenge, as well as a revisited challenge and a quote for the month. Catch up on the stories you might have missed this month with the monthly listing of archive updates.

Oshun has once again crafted an exceptional character biography for the newsletter. This month's biography about Orome takes inspiration from the season, looking at how Orome's character parallels with similar figures that appear in world mythology, particularly that of Britain and northern Europe.

Enjoy!

Hi, all,

I've had this issue crop up three times now in fairly close succession, which tells me it's time to put out a general message about it, since more folks will likely be switching to Internet Explorer 9, and I'd like to save unnecessary frustration for them, if I can.

Several users have reported serious problems using Internet Explorer 9 with eFiction sites. (Both SWG and MPTT use eFiction software.) They are unable to add stories or leave comments on stories.

If you use IE 9 (or plan on upgrading to IE 9 sometime in the future) and experience problems using the archive, please turn on compatibility mode. Then the site should run fine.

If you don't know how to do that, Microsoft has a help page:

Of course, if you run into any problems at all while using the archive, please don't hesitate to contact me at this address.

Hi, all,

Our November newsletter has been posted on the website!

In this month's news, Angelica, our Library of Tirion mod, sends a reminder to send in your requests for stories and authors (pre-2007!) for the Library of Tirion section of our archive. This project aims to archive stories that were published before our archive opened. We're almost out of stories to post and so need some new recommendations! Also, if you use or intend to upgrade to Internet Explorer 9, be sure to check out how to make your browser compatible with the archive.

This month's biography is on Tulkas. Tulkas has a singular purpose in The Silmarillion, but as is often the case, delving into earlier drafts reveals details about him that were scrubbed from the published text.

The newsletter also contains a list of stories added to the archive last month, a fresh set of challenges to tickle your muses, and announcements from groups beyond the SWG. Many thanks, as always, to my comods Rhapsody and Angelica, who do most of the ground work needed to publish the newsletter!

Enjoy! :)

I recently joined this group and thought that I would quickly introduce myself.
I too became a reader of Tolkien only after seeing FOTR. I fell in love with
the books. Up until 2005, I was involved in writing fanfiction (the unfortunate
stories are still up at ff.net) and in various LOTR themed RPGs. When
greatestjournal.com went under, I lost most of my other Tolkien fanfiction. My
muse got put on hold when I married and started a family. However, I am in the
process of finding my library of Tolkien and re-immersing myself in this world.
I will be posting fiction again, and I welcome all constructive criticism.

I look forward to meeting you all!

Hi, Kim, and welcome! :)

I also became interested in Tolkien's books thanks to the movies; reading LotR
prompted me to read the Silm, and here I am! :)

This list has become fairly quiet lately, although I do hope that will change
someday (possibly when I have the time to be a proper group owner/mod again ...
soon!). You might also be aware, but we have a website with a fiction archive
for Silm stories:

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/

So what are your favorite aspects/characters in the Silm? Did you write Silmfic
before, or did you mostly focus on LotR? Any particular interests as a writer?

Again, welcome, and please give me a holler if I can help you in any way! :)

I did just join this morning! I hope to gain some vital concrit since it has
been at least four years since my last try at fiction writing.

I am reacquainting myself with my copy of the Silmarillion, so I am in the midst
of discovery again! I've had quite a few "I remember that!" moments. I have
always been interested in many of the main players in the First and Second Ages.
I tend to favor Gil-Galad. There was something beautifully tragic about his
reign as the last king.

I have attempted Silmarillion fiction before and re-read the tries. Some of my
plots were borderline heretical! I am proud to say that not only my writing
style, but my common sense has evolved.

Hi, Kim,

Yep, it's my usual routine to check the site in the morning, so we must have just missed each other! :)

If you're looking for concrit, I'll be honest that we don't see a lot of concrit on stories posted on the archive. We obviously allow concrit, but it just doesn't happen much in comments on stories posted on the archive. That said, our group is fortunate to have many gifted writers who do help each other out with beta-reading, critique, and the like. I know there are a couple of active writers' groups out there; the Lizard Council comes first to my mind as a group that I know a lot of SWG members participate in. Anyone else know of any other groups out there? (I'm afraid that real life has kept me out of the loop for a couple of years now.) A number of our members also work with other authors as betas. I just wanted to give you some additional options, in case you find that you're not getting what you need in the form of concrit on the archive.

> Some of my plots were borderline heretical!

As a self-identified "canon" heretic, that doesn't sound like a bad thing to me! ;)

Hi, all,

I've been thinking about reviews (or comments on stories, if you prefer) lately. What motivates a reader to leave a comment? How does the number of reviews received influence where an author posts her work? What makes a reader decide not to review a story?

I have my pet theories, but I am very interested in whether others have similar experiences and theories, so I posted a poll to LiveJournal and Dreamwidth this morning, asking these questions and more about reading and reviewing habits in fandom. I'd very much appreciate input from anyone with the time to participate in the poll.

There's also some very interesting discussions going on in the comments. All opinions are welcome! :)

All the best,

Hi, all,

The December 2011 edition of our newsletter has been posted on our homepage:

As usual, we have news from within and beyond the borders of the SWG. Additionally, Oshun has written another fabulous biography, this month on Varda, drawing on everything from ancient myth to modern pop culture to explain why Varda is so important in the books and so appealing as a character, as well as giving a review of what we know of Varda from Tolkien's texts.

This month, we also revisit the "Gift of a Story" challenge and encourage our authors to create something for a friend this month, in honor of the winter holidays and New Year.

Many thanks to our newsletter contributors--Oshun, Rhapsody, and Angelica--for making it happen every month! :)

Best wishes for a fabulous holiday season and New Year,

Sign up now for My Slashy Santa 2012: a Tolkien Slash exchange! From the Years
of the Trees through the Fourth Age – it's time once again to make your Tolkien
FPS fanfic dreams come true…

Have you always wanted to read a certain pairing or scenario, but couldn't write
it yourself? Or have a plot bunny that's been rolling around in your mind, but
just can't see yourself writing that particular story?

Have it written for you – specifically and especially for your own sweet self!
And share your own fic gift in exchange!

That's right, it's time for My Slashy Valentine brought to you by the same folks
who sponsor the renowned Slashy Santa and Ardor in August Fiction Exchange.

Fhe exchange focuses solely on the Elves, Man, Valar and Maiar of J.R.R.
Tolkien's legendarium. Maybe it's Legolas and Haldir you love, or perhaps
Aragorn-on-Halbarad strikes your fancy... or maybe Manwe is your main man - from
the First Age to the Fourth – spread the word, recruit your friends and fellow
authors, and have some fun!

Sign-ups begin Saturday, December 3, 2011 and will close at midnight (GMT-5:00)
on Saturday, December 17, 2011. For first time participants, stories will be due
by February 1st, and for returning writers they will be due on February 8th.
They will be unveiled on SlashySanta.com <http://www.slashysanta.com/eFiction>
on Tuesday, February 14th.

How does a fiction exchange work? It's simple. READ THE RULES posted in the
Slashy Santa LJ community (link here
<http://slashy-santa.livejournal.com/66463.html> ) and you will find a link to
the sign-up page where you may specify a pairing,
rating, and the plot elements you would like to read, as well as the elements
you are willing to write, and someone will write a story for you. In exchange,
you will write a story for someone else using the specifications they provide.

Even if you don't want to take part in the exchange, you can still elect to be a
reserve writer to be called upon in case of an emergency. Just say so on the
signup form.

All we ask is that you adhere to some basic rules - If you sign up, please make
sure that you can follow through and write at least 1,200 words. Please note
also that this is a SLASH only FPS exchange (no RPS or het, please).

PLEASE NOTE: If you have defaulted in previous years, you will NOT be allowed to
participate this year! These stories are gifts for your friends and fellow fans,
and it is incredibly disappointing for a participant who has worked hard to turn
in their own story only to find that we have nothing to give them. There will be
no exceptions to this rule.

Visit the Swap Rules and FAQ <http://www.slashysanta.com/rules.html> for the
full set of rules and Frequently Asked Questions.

Here are some important dates to make note of:

* Dec. 3rd - 17th : Sign-up period
* Dec 24th: Assignments delivered
* Feb. 1th: Stories due from first time participants
* Feb. 8th: Stories due from returning writers
* Feb. 14th: Archive opens

Come check out SlashySanta.com <http://www.slashysanta.com/eFiction> and peruse

I am passing on the following message on behalf of Marta, the MEFA admin. A big congratulations to everyone who participated in this year's MEFAs! Volunteers, reviewers, authors--you all rock! :)

Dawn

---

I'm proud to announce the results for the 2011 Middle-earth Fanfiction Awards. We had a really strong set of nominations this year, and want to congratulate all of the authors whose pieces won awards.

Check out the full list of stories that won awards, and also of commended reviewers:

http://www.mefawards.org/index.php?page=results

You can also find the story information, access a link to where the story is posted, and read other peoples' reviews of any story by clicking the "Info" link next to it. While the MEFAs are finished for this year, fandom is the city that never sleeps and I am sure authors would appreciate your reviews at their archives, even if you didn't vote for them as part of our awards.

Also: I'd like to thank all of our many volunteers who worked so hard to make this year's awards a success. I listed them at http://mefas.livejournal.com/307066.html . If you know someone on this list, why not send them an attaboy to show them you appreciate their efforts?

Finally: if you have suggestions about ways that we can improve the MEFAs for 2012, please email me at mefasupportATgmailDOTcom. We're always trying to improve, and while we can't act on every suggestion, we DEFINITELY can't fix problems we don't know about.

Thanks to all who participated in whatever capacity, and here's to an even better 2012!

Marta

Hi, all,

I almost forgot to announce that the January newsletter is up on our website:

My comods and I have written our annual New Years' letter to keep the group informed of where we hope to go in the next year. We've also included some tips on how to use the archive's Character list to find stories you want to read and ensure your story is being found by eager readers. Around the World and Web has announcements from groups outside of the SWG as well. (Special plug: I am working with some other Tolkien fans on a project to put together a Silmarillion-based podcast, and we are looking for folks who would be interested in participating. There are more details in the newsletter!) You can also find a list of all the stories, poems, and plays updated and finished during the month of December.

Oshun took a well-deserved month off during December, and I wrote the character biography in her stead. I updated my earlier and very perfunctory "emergency" biography of Namo Mandos. He is a character who has invited intriguing and varied interpretations in Silmarillion-based fiction, and my research revealed him to have deep roots not only in Tolkien's legendarium but also in world mythology.

We change challenges every three months, so this is the month for a new challenge for any writers or artists who care to accept it: It's All in the Numbers. This challenge asks participants to ponder how individuals and cultures in Arda utilized numbers. We're also revisiting the "Four Elements" challenge and have a new quote of the month, so if you need to kickstart the muses during the deep of winter (or the unrelenting heat of summer, for those of you in the south!), we encourage you to try one of the month's challenges!

Thanks to Rhapsody for her help in putting the newsletter together (and for reminding me that I hadn't posted an announcement about it yet! :)

My best wishes for a lovely New Year!

Greetings all,

Over the past few weeks, my comods on the SWG and MPTT have been working hard to put together this year's Back to Middle-earth Month event, and we are ready to announce the event at last!

2012 is the 75th anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, the book that introduced the world to Middle-earth and paved the way for The Lord of the Rings and, eventually, the posthumous publication of The Silmarillion, among other books. In honor of this milestone, Bilbo Baggins' uncle Bingo Baggins has decided to do what Hobbits do best: throw a party! And what else to do at such a party than play BINGO?

If you've never played BINGO, it's a straightforward game. Each player holds one or more cards containing 25 numbered squares. When a number on your card is called, you mark off that square. The first player to mark off five squares in a row (vertical, horizontal, or diagonal) wins the game. We will call a new number each day, throughout the month of March.

Of course, we've added an extra twist: Before you can mark off your number, you will have to complete a challenge. Each card will have a theme, and you can claim the cards with themes that intrigue you the most. (For example, of the cards I've created already, themes include poetic forms, the sons of Feanor, and review challenges.) You can claim as many or as few cards as you want.

B2MeM will begin in just over a month, and if it's going to be a fun challenge, then players will need a variety of cards to choose from. And this is where you can help us now. Anyone is invited to design BINGO cards for our game, so we hope many of you will challenge your fellow players by helping us to design cards!

For more information on this year's event and how to get started, please see (and join!) our shiny new B2MeM community:

The SWG and MPTT--the groups hosting this year's event--also have B2MeM pages up on their site, where you can see the cards currently available, choose a participant banner, and learn more about how to get involved:

As always, this is an event for the entire Tolkien fandom, not just members of the hosting groups. If you know other Tolkien fans or groups who might be interested in participating, please do pass the word along--all are welcome!

Best regards,

No, your eyes do not deceive you--the February 2012 edition of the SWG newsletter is on time this month! And it has lots of new stuff worth a look.

http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/news/february2012.php

Of course, you will find news from within the SWG and beyond our borders. Back to Middle-earth Month (B2MeM) preparations are in full swing, as we have close to three dozen BINGO cards created by participants and many people signed up to play in this year's event. I will be releasing another round of new cards shortly, probably tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Oshun has written another bang-up biography on Rochallor. Wait ... Fingolfin's horse? Yes ... but do not let Rochallor's beastly nature deceive you; yet again, Oshun has gifted us with a well researched and thought-provoking biography, as she looks at Rochallor's canonical role in his master's defiant and impetuous (totally Finwion!) final stand against Melkor. She also points to the significance of horses in heroic literature. Oshun does a consistently fabulous job on these monthly biographies, and Rochallor's joins her impressive list of biographies well worth a look.

For those who have missed the Funnies section, we have excellent news--Pandemonium's clever Gothmog & Draugluin comic is back this month! Professor Thû and his Orcish assistant have just taken over Tol Sirion and need to take stock of the place. Welcome back, G&D crew--you have been missed!

Many thanks to Oshun, Pandemonium, Rhapsody, and Angelica, our newsletter contributors who help keep SWG members informed and entertained!

Best regards to all,

Hello!

I am new to the Yahoo Group of the Silmarillion Writers Guild. I am a huge
Tolkien fan since I read the The Lord of the Rings in the tender age of 13. More
than LotR, I love the Silmarillion. Especially, the story lines about Feanor and
his seven sons with Nelyafinwe Maitimo Russandol being my most favourite
character.

Since the Sil is rather short, I enjoy reading good fanfiction. I loved Dawn
Felagunds portrayal of the Feanorians in "Another Mans Cage" and the stories of
Ithilwen_of_Himring in particular.

I have no experience in writing but decided to try a story of my own concerning
- yes :-) - the Feanorians as well. I had hoped the group could help me with
some questions and humbly ask the masterminds for counsel.

There is one issue I would like to discuss, namely the following paragraph in
the chapter "Of the return of the Noldor" in the Silmarillion. I quote:

"But even in the hour of the death of Fenanor an embassy came to his sons from
Morgoth, acknowledging defeat, and offering terms, even to the surrender of a
Silmaril. Then Maedhros the tall, the eldest son, persuaded his brothers to
feign to tret with Morgoth, and to meet his emissaries at the place appointed;
but the Noldor had as little thought of faith as had he. Wherefore each embassy
came with greater force than was agreed; but Morgoth sent the more, and there
were Balrogs. Maedhros was ambushed, and all his company were slain; but he
himself was taken alive by the command of Morgoth, and brought to Angband."

So my problem is: Seriously, what was Maedhros thinking??

I mean, he knew it apparently that Morgoth was baiting him with a Silmaril and
couldnt possibly think he would show up himself or he was really sending a
Silmaril with his emissiaries. So what was he hoping to gain? Even if he really
thought, he could beat Morgoths forces (which may be so as they nearly destroyed
them in the preceding battles under the command of this father or at least
seriously damaged Morgoths might) what was to come next? So he would have
destroyed another of Morgoth forces. What benefit did he hope to gain
by putting himself in grave danger of being killed (or captivated)?

My thoughts on this issue... I think, though he seemed not as hot-tempered as
his father, he was probably also a bit arrogant/proud and therefore
underestimated his foe. I think, he hoped - by baiting himself, the High King of
the Noldor after Feanors death - that Morgoth would send all his remaining
forces to capture him and therefore leaving Angband largely undefended since the
bulk of his army was marching against him. Then, defeating the said force, he
could march against Angband, now that a direct assault against it walls bereft
of its defenders would be more easy.

What do you think? Does this make sense and sound logic? Could he have argued
similarly with his brothers and convinced them thus?

A part of my story contains a flashback where Maedhros discusses Morgoths offer
with his brothers and convinces them (save Maglor, who is sceptical).

So I would very much appreciate if you would share your thoughts on this matter
with me.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to the SWG, P! :)

> I mean, he knew it apparently that Morgoth was baiting him with a Silmaril

I don't get from the passage that Maedhros knew Melkor intended to be unfaithful. (Although ... yeah, it's Melkor, so it's probably a reasonable assumption ... ;) What I get from "persuaded his brothers to feign to treat with Morgoth" isn't that Maedhros realized Melkor was plotting against him and convinced his brothers to go for it anyway but that Maedhros thought Melkor was sincere but planned to arrive with a larger force than agreed and to defeat Melkor utterly. To me, this makes sense because I don't see the Feanorians--on account of their oath and their justifiable loathing of Melkor--settling for anything less than total defeat of Melkor. They are going to seize any opportunity to do so and--coming hot off the heels of a kinslaying and abandonment of a large portion of Finwe's people--I don't think they'd have any scruples with lying to the Dark Lord.

Now as to why Maedhros didn't realize the likelihood that Melkor wouldn't keep his promise--I don't think there are any clear answers to this, in the text anyway. This would be a good point to explore in a story. I think there's many possibilities, pride certainly being one of them, as you mention.

> that Morgoth would send all his remaining forces to capture him and therefore leaving Angband largely undefended since the bulk of his army was marching against him. *snip* What do you think? Does this make sense and sound logic?

I would have to be convinced as to why Melkor would need to clear out Angband to capture one Elf. That's not to say that I couldn't be convinced, but it would take some work on your part, as the author. What about Maedhros would make Melkor feel so threatened? I don't see it based on the texts. I mean, I think Maedhros is made of awesome ;), but if Melkor wasn't cowed by Feanor, then I don't think Maedhros will have much of an effect on him.

My personal vision of that incident is that, after the Noldor soundly routed Melkor's forces, Maedhros underestimated Melkor's ability to muster the kind of force that he brought to their supposed parley. His confidence--or pride ;)--convinced him that any army Melkor could bring would be no match for the Noldor. He just didn't see reason to fear the "handful of leaves" left to Melkor. Melkor sent his messenger in the same hour as Feanor's death, giving Maedhros and his brothers little time for rational consideration; they were already on an emotional high, both from their success against Melkor and the spectacular death of their father. The two would have made a potent combination for seeking vengeance. Furthermore, Maedhros probably figured that, with the shattered remains of an army left to him, Melkor wouldn't be able to muster an assault against the Noldor in so short a time. That may have made him trust Melkor's word more than he would have been inclined to do otherwise.

Again, this is my personal interpretation; I hope others share their thoughts too! :)

There was probably a lot of rage involved.  I would hazard that that was the driving influence behind Maedhros' decision.  Plus, if his plan had worked, the quest would have been over right then.  Surely Feanor was not the only elf that died in that battle.  Who knows how many other close friends they lost?  I think Maedhros would prefer to minimize the elven deaths involved.  Moreover, Maedhros strikes me as the "dutiful son" type.  His father just died trying to accomplish what he sees a chance to achieve.  There's nothing else he can do for his father, and brothers, really, than fulfill their oath.  We certainly see later on how aware he was of the consequences they faced for failing.  He would want to spare his father undying darkness (or whatever the exact wording was -- it's been too long since I read that book).  And that in addition to the death of Finwe back in the Undying Lands and the fact that Morgoth stole pretty much everything of value that they had -- ok, all the jewels, but I would infer from that that whatever he left would have been of significantly lesser value.

Hello, Dawn!
I appreciate your answer very much! As I mentioned before, I love your story
"Another Mans cage". I am rereading it for the third time now. Love it, how you
portrayed each character in a way, which is so very believable. I deeply admire
your talents as a writer and your amazing creativity. Hope you will continue to
write your genius stories (especially concerning Maitimio ;-)).

Concerning my question…

So you basically say, that Maedhros indeed believed Morgoth´s offer for
surrendering since he believed him defeated and near his end and intended to
seize the opportunity to destroy Morgoth entirely by taking a much larger host
with him and taking all three of the Silmarils. But that would also mean, that
he also believed, that Morgoth would show up himself, wearing all stones in his
iron crown. Otherwise, he could just hope to gain just one of the Silmarils as
agreed upon sended with emissiaries.

So you think, Maedhros also believed Morgoth to come to the parley as well, like
himself as the leader of the Noldor?

Another question… could it be possible, that the fact, that Morgoth offered just
one of the Silmarils, made his offer more believable? Maedhros might have
thought, that Morgoth underestimated the Noldor and sought to buy himself some
time to gather his strength by showing his good will in surrendering one of the
Silmarils.

Another point is also, that even he believed it to be a trap, as he was plotting
one himself, he didn´t think Morgoth to be capable of overrunning the Noldorin
forces and so didn't think the parley to be too dangerous.

My last thought concerns also the following point… do you think he also acted
quickly as he wanted to spare his father the everlasting darkness? I don't have
it in my mind clearly, but I think, the oath contained some words which spoke of
the everlasting darkness if it wouldn't be fulfilled…

I hope, I could explain, what I mean… as you clearly may have noticed, English
is not my mother tongue .
You may call be Pervin, by the way ;-).
