Hi, all,

I posted an important announcement on the B2MeM community today:

http://b2mem.livejournal.com/163190.html

It contains a reminder about daylight savings time for those who switched today. It also points out an error on the Colors card, discovered and kindly pointed out by Paranoidangel. The last column on the Colors card should be all O's, not G's. (It is numbered correctly on the text cards, for those players using text cards.) The final column of prompts on Colors, therefore, should be:

O61: Blue
O64: Brown
O69: Fuchsia
O73: Bright Green
O75: Copper

Please note that this includes O64 (brown), which will close in about nine hours. If you avoided this prompt because of the incorrect numbering, please make sure you claim your stamp in time.

Finally, our winners' list grows! I sent out banners yesterday for winners on numbers that have been closed. I will continue to send out winners' banners when the winning number closes. If you should have received a banner yesterday and did not, please let me know.

All the best,

Dawn

Hi, all,

Yes, I am again using the shameless ploy of withholding the BINGO number in order to make sure everyone sees an important announcement.

For the final two days of the event, two of our stampers/mods (Russandol and myself) will be traveling and, therefore, offline. We shuffled around responsibilities so that all B2MeM tasks will continue as usual, and you should have received an email if your stamper will be changing. However, I do want everyone to be aware, since the duties done by five people will be handled by three, and the time it takes to get things done may be a bit longer as a result. I'd kindly request that participants wait three days before querying about any missing stamps.

Furthermore, if you tend to email me or Russandol personally with questions or requests, please use the moderator AT silmarillionwritersguild DOT org address instead, beginning on the 29th.

And now for your regularly scheduled BINGO number ... :)

The BINGO number for today, March 28, is G59. You have 48 hours to make a significant start on any G59 prompts and send us a post/email requesting your stamps. We will stop accepting requests for G59 stamps at approximately 11:59 PM GMT on March 29. Please request your G59 stamps here:

Hello, everybody,

Today, on March 31, we have posted the last bingo number but that doesn’t mean the game is over!

The LJ community will remain open so all the authors who want to continue sharing their work there are welcome to do so and if you've been too busy writing, now is the time to catch up with all the wonderful stories already posted. The stampers are still hard at work.

As soon as Dawn comes back, she will make the winner announcements and the prizes will be handed out to those who have won. If you didn't get bingo, don't fret: there will be surprises for everybody!

We also want to thank you for your kind words and appreciation!

(More) Happy writing! :)

Hi!

I have three stories that I didn't finiosh because there was no more prompts for them. Can I post the next parts in the comm, even without prompts? I was thinking of redirecting readers to my LJ if that was not possible, but if it's possible I could post the last parts in the comm.

And again thank you! =)

Hi CC,

If you started to write these stories based on previous B2mem 2012
prompts, I see no reason why you cannot continue to post there. Perhaps
for the readers it would be useful to see the prompts used that got the
fiction started in the first place, this way they know what inspired it
as a kind of reference point.

For everyone: feel free to continue B2mem 2012 stories there even in
weeks to come, that is what the community is for as well.

CC, if you have more questions, do ask! That's what we're here for. :c)

Hi, all,

Our host has let us know that they plan to do a major software upgrade of the
server where Silmarillion Writers Guild is on. This will happen within 48 hours
time frame (2nd or 3rd of April, they didn't state it that precisely) and in the
early morning hours (for the United States). It is possible that you cannot
access the SWG during the 2 hour planned down time and I wanted to give everyone
a heads up about this.

If you have any questions or concerns, do contact us at the moderator account

Hi, all,

The SWG's hosting company will be doing an upgrade within the next 48
hours that may require them to take our site offline for as long as
two hours, so you may encounter an outage in the next two days. Please
report any problems with the site that you may encounter after the
upgrade. (Hopefully no one will encounter any problems, but it's
happened before, so it pays to be vigilant! :)

Hi, everyone,

It's late again, thanks to B2MeM and my traveling out of the country, but this month's newsletter is finally done and posted! Hopefully, next month, I can get back on the proper schedule again. :)

This month's edition contains a new comic from pandemonium_213: the next installment in Gothmog and Draugluin's adventure with Professor Thu while Melkor is gone on vacation. In addition there is news from within and beyond the SWG, a list of this month's stories, and a new challenge.

I would like to draw attention to an important announcement from Angelica, our Library of Tirion moderator, in this month's newsletter. We are once again running low on stories to add to the Library of Tirion. For those of you not familiar with it, LofT is the section of our archive for stories published prior to the opening of the SWG archive in 2007. We rely on our members to suggest their favorite pre-SWG authors so that we can ensure that this era of fandom history is represented on our site. Please email us with your requests or use the request form on the site. There is more information here:

Thank you to Pandemonium, Rhapsody, and Angelica for their contributions to this month's newsletter!

Best regards to all,

Hi, all,

Due to a glitch in the RSS feed that we use to compile the story list each month, stories posted to the archive between March 13 and March 24 were inadvertently left off of the list. Clearly, this amounts to quite a few stories! :) Rhapsody has kindly fixed the list for us, and the correct version is now available on our website:

Hi, everyone,

A mysterious bug has crawled out of the woodwork and is causing some problems on the archives for both the SWG and MPTT. My comods and I are working on getting the problem solved, but since it will involve either (or both!) the software creators and our webhost, it may be a few days before we get it fixed.

Here is the problem: When you open the story form to add a new story/chapter or edit an existing chapter, the form will not allow you to input text into the Story Notes, Chapter Notes, and Story Text fields, if you have the rich-text editor (TinyMCE) turned on.

This problem has been reported in Internet Explorer and Firefox. Chrome appears to be behaving normally.

Until we get the problem corrected, please use one of the following workarounds:

--Use Google Chrome to access the site when you need to add/edit stories.

--Shut off the rich-text editor (TinyMCE). You can do this via the Edit Preferences link on your account screen. Make sure the checkbox for "Use tinyMCE WYSWYG editor" is not checked.

SWG: http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/archive/home/user.php?action=editprefs
MPTT: http://www.lotrgfic.com/user.php?action=editprefs

You will need to add your story using HTML if you shut off the rich-text editor.

--Beneath each of the affected fields is the option to shut off the rich-text editor (TinyMCE) for that field alone. Uncheck that box, then tick it again. The field should work normally once you do this.

If you experience any problems aside from those that have been already reported, please let me know. If you have any questions regarding the above workarounds, don't hesitate to ask.

Best regards,

Dawn

Hi, all,

I posted two weeks ago about a bug that suddenly appeared on the archive that seemed to affect Firefox users who were using the rich-text editor. This bug didn't allow you to enter text into some of the fields, including the Story field. (The original bug report can be read here: http://silwritersguild.livejournal.com/202781.html.)

SWG moderators Russandol and Rhapsody have been working hard in the meantime to figure out how to correct this problem. Lo and behold, the latest Firefox upgrade to version 12 seems to have solved the problem!

If this problem affected you, please upgrade to version 12 of Firefox. You can do this by clicking on Help and choosing About Firefox. This will display the version you are currently running, will check for updated versions, and prompt you to run an update, if necessary.

I also checked the archive in Internet Explorer 7 this afternoon and didn't have any problems, nor have problems been reported with Chrome. Please be aware, if you use Internet Explorer 9, that there is a different problem with this browser that requires you to run it in compatibility mode in order for it to work with our archive software. (You can learn more about how to do that here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/why-do-some-webpages-look-incorrect-in-internet-explorer-9.)

At this point, we are considering this issue resolved. If you continue to have any problems with the archive, please report them to me or one of the other site moderators. I can always be reached at this address or at moderator AT silmarillionwritersguild DOT org (on the SWG) and websmith AT lotrgfic DOT com (on MPTT).

Many, many thanks again to Russandol and Rhapsody, who actually had a fix in place and were in the process of scheduling it when Firefox solved the problem for them.

All the best,

(I didn't think there would be much to say about her when I started this one, but I found quite a bit that I found intriguing and surprising!)

Many thanks to my comods Rhapsody and Angelica for their invaluable assistance putting this month's newsletter together.

Enjoy! :)

Hi, all,

Because this year's B2MeM was immensely popular and generated an insane amount of stories and art, we've wanted to give participants and readers a chance to share their favorite pieces created for this year's challenge. I've created a post at the B2MeM community for recommending your favorite pieces, both those you created yourself and those created by other participants.

Please do stop by and recommend some of your favorites! This will not only help future visitors to our community but will also let participants some well-earned bragging about their accomplishments! :)

You do not have to have participated as a writer/artist to suggest your favorite pieces from this year's challenge, and you're more than welcome to list more than one.

All the best,

Hi, everyone,

The June 2012 newsletter has been posted on our site!

We don't have a lot of site news this month, but we would like to remind those of you who read entries produced for B2MeM to please recommend your favorites; those of you who participated, please feel free to suggest your best pieces! We are compiling a list for the community and website. We have a couple of challenge announcements from other Tolkien groups as well in Around the World and Web.

This month, Oshun continues and completes her two-part biography of Gandalf, undertaken for Back to Middle-earth Month. This month, she explores his role in the various stories he appears in and how he evolved as a character throughout the different texts. As always, the essay is insightful and informative and well worth the read!

Finally, we have our ongoing challenge "Just Say It With a Gift!" and the "Sibling Rivalry" challenge revisited, in honor of our June Geminis, as well as a new quote of the month. You can also find a list of stories added to the archive during the month of May.

Thank you to Oshun, Rhapsody, and Angelica for their assistance in producing the content for the newsletter!

All the best,

Hi!

I am writing a crossover with 6 characters, two of them from Tolkien Universe,
and Fingon is one of them. The other is Elladan, and there are 4 other boys from
other fandoms. I don't consider it SWG material, but it is about Fingon in a
strange land and he'll have a role, so if you wish to check, I've posted two
parts already. Here is the link to the beginning of the story:

If you read and have questions, ask them in my writing journal, please. :)

Hi, everyone,

I've been contacted by a staff member from the Giggle/Snort Awards, an award for original and fan fiction in the humor genre. This year, the award is trying to set up a category for Tolkien-based humor pieces and has asked me to pass along information about the awards in case anyone is interested in nominating their favorite funny stories in our fandom!

The award's website can be found here:

http://awards.gigglesnort.net/news.php

Nominations close on 24 June, so there's only about a week left.

The staff member who contacted me assured me that, although the category is called "Lord of the Rings," anything from Tolkien's universe is eligible. Rules and more details can be found at the link above.

All the best,

Dawn

Subject: MEFAwards 2012 Ratings System: Objections and Alternative Proposals
pandemonium_213
Send Email Send Email

FYI: for SWG members, who include MEFA participants, I am reposting from the
MEFAwards Yahoo group.

~ Pandemonium

[Note: This letter represents the collective position of the MEFA participants
listed below.]

On the advent of the MEFA 2012 season, we, the undersigned, wish to protest the
proposed new ratings system. Our objections are as follows:

-- The Tolkien fan fiction community represents a wide array of interests, and
the MEFAwards have been inclusive of a variety of stories, from genfic to those
with mature content. The proposed ratings system has the potential to decrease
this diversity.

-- Because ratings across archives are not harmonized, these present a problem
as applied broadly to the 2012 rating system and may favor submission of stories
nominated from one archive over another.

-- The ratings system places an undue burden on authors who write mature content
by requiring them to justify the literary merits of their stories and
potentially discourages their participation in the awards.

-- The ratings system also has the potential to place an undue burden on the
MEFA ratings panel and administrators, who must vet the justifications noted
above.

--The proposed numerical system on a scale of 1 to 6 adds yet more complexity to
the MEFA nomination process.

We recognize that at this time the new ratings system may be difficult to
overhaul for this season. However, we offer the following proposals for
consideration:

-- For this season only, maintain the 1 to 6 rating system, but rather than
mandating written, detailed justification from authors of nominated stories
containing "5" content, trust that the authors know that their mature content
does not contain gratuitous sex, violence, and/or gore.

-- Addition of a check box to the nomination form that all authors check off to
indicate that they have read, understood, and have applied the ratings system.

-- Any objections to a nominated story should be brought forward to the ratings
panel, ideally comprising 5 individuals, including those who have experience
with writing stories that contain mature themes.

-- The objections should be made no later than 4 weeks after the nominations
have closed.

-- The decision by the panel as to the suitability of the story in question to
remain in competition should be made within 1 week maximum (2 weeks for a longer
work).

-- Stories receiving objections that are not addressed within these designated
timeframes should be allowed to compete through the end of the voting season.

For future MEFAs, we ask that such major changes in policy are brought before
the membership at large through mailing lists, LJ, or the Yahoo Groups prior to
implementation. Again, we recognize that the time may be too short to make
significant changes to the rating systems for the 2012 awards, but we request
re-evaluation of the current ratings system for the 2013 season.

We appreciate all the hard work that the MEFA administrators and volunteers have
done in the past and continue to do on behalf of our community. We present our
concerns and offer our proposals in order to engage in an open and transparent
dialogue meant to ensure that the awards remain a good experience for all
members of our community.
