Hello everyone, Thanks for approving me for entry into this group.

Yo Curt! I wanna get in on some of the weapons training. My time here
in NC shall end before long and I will be moving back to Houston
before the new year. I've had a lot of fun training with these boys
from Ft Bragg. I'm gonna miss all the hardcore training I've enjoyed
sharing with this group and I hope to pick up where I left off soon.

Hey Daniel...when are you moving back to Houston?  I've got a few guys training with swords and knives that are pretty into it.  Since it's fair season we haven't been able to get together much...but it's a lot of fun when we do.
I'm in the process of moving our school.  Actually...I moved it about a month and a half ago and it was probably the worst mistake of my life...so we're moving again on the 13th of this month.  So I haven't been able to get out and play at the fest this year.  That and the motor of my car blew out on me...so there's no transportation for at least another few days.
But we'll set up some time when you get back to Houston.

I've never had the chance to play at the Fairre. That sounds like
alot of fun. One of these days, hopefully the chance will come
around. As for when I come back to Houston, it looks like I'll be
arriving sometime before December. Email me your number and I'll call
you after I settle in when I'm back.

Houston Stick Fighting Association's 1st combative meet on 11/26/2006(Sunday)

There is this newly formed Martial Arts Weapons group called the Houston Stick Fighting Association. They will be hosting their 1st combative gathering at Hermann Park in the heart of the city near the museum, the zoo and medical center area. The event will be held on Sunday, November 26, 2006 starting at 10:00 am til 12:00 pm.

The HSFA is not limited to just the Filipino Kali/Arnis/Escrima players, but to all
other MA weapons enthusiasts[Kendo/Shinai/Bokken, Staff, Chucks, Staff, Jo, SCA Heavy Combat, ARMA swordplay, Amtgard, etc.] For more info about the HSFA, click onto the highlighted link in the paragraph above to learn more.

I had just moved back to Houston after 20 months in Fayetteville, North Carolina and it looked like I moved back at the right time. I am very happy to see the interest in martial arts weapons combat(FMA in particular) continue to grow and I am grateful for Johnathan Bolton to have started this association. Johnathan is also a student under Tim Mousel who is also my

instructor in JKD Concepts, Thai boxing, Combat Grappling and Filipino Kali. Johnathan is an instructor at the Houston Martial Arts Academy located in downtown Houston.

For those of you who know a little bit of my background, if any of you are nearby(North West Houston/Tomball) I am looking for experienced players/training-partners in this form of combat to practice with for this occasion and also to potentially become part of the DAMAG-INC Kali Combatives Unit.

Rock on!

The Houston Stick Fighting Association led by Johnathan Bolton held their 1st combative meet among FMA and other MA weapons-based players earlier today, Sunday the 26th beginning at around 10 am at Hermann Park stage left to the miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston Texas.
At the gathering, there were instructors from the various FMA schools throughout Houston with their students. Isias Ginson showed up and officiated most of the matches. Then there was Ed Kwan, an IMAF FMA guy from Clearlake who came to watch. Leo Quitalon with his LESKAS/Lighting Escrima crew from Sugarland was also there to play along. There was also some ARMA[Assoc. Rennaisance M A] players, and even some kendo players all in good fun under the sun of one beautiful day.

Bill Little and his training partner, Mike Wise drove in from Beaumont and picked me up this morning from Tomball right at one hour prior to the scheduled time to meet at the park. It turned out we were the first ones there. I'm gratefully happy to make some new friends and in re-acquainting with old friends that showed up to extend their support. Thanks to my old pal, Joaquin Rendon and (others with him) for handling the video camera during the matches.

This day marked the beginning of strong potential for all stick-based MA weapons practitioners beginning in the Greater Houston area alone to be unified under the sun to share support for each other in a form of "friendly exchanges" of skills with no egos, prizes or politics. All of us turned out to be great sports with each other. I know for sure I acknowledged all the hits I took from every sparring partner I traded blows with. In fact, I myself actually enjoyed getting hit just to encourage my sparring partner at the time to keep at it til I throw some back.

We also had matches with the smakstix/actionflex padded sticks with the helmet on. Those things were created perfectly if you did not want to be seriously hurt. We didn't even need any gloves to protect from the handshots because the sticks were very soft. I was letting myself get hit as hard and as often just to test if a person can get hurt by one of those things during a match with the smakstix with Manong Joe Galleon... and man, he loved to bang for a man over 60 years of age!
There was also dagger duel simulation & espada y daga matches with catchers chest guards on, and we went to the live stick where we wore the WEKAF protective vest. I personally did not really care much for the WEKAF vests but I put it on anyway and still had a great time. I got to have fun letting myself get hit hard to see if their heavy shots would actually penetrate through the armor, while holding the stick in my weaker hand[I'm a lefty] but we sparred with lighter, thinner rattan sticks though. The last thing we needed that day was for anyone to get seriously injured. I did get to be the only one wearing my fencing mask as everyone else wore the Doce Pares, Canete cage helmets.

My last match was against a long wooden sword made of some really really hard wood versus my double sticks. During the beginning of the match, I went ahead and took some of those hits since I was up to feeling a little pain that day, and since it was a heavy weapon, those were some really heavy hits! I even took a thrust from the tip of the wooden sword on my lower bicep and it did not take much to feel that. I recieved a slight knot from that too. I just knew I hit home when I got inside of the long range of the sword and opened up my own little flurry of shots on the armor and mask. Either way, in the end my new sword fighting friend Jay, expressed a strong desire to learn FMA. I assured him it will boost his sword game to even greater heights. I do wish him well with it and look forward to seeing his game get better at the next meet. Thanks most of all to Johnathan Bolton once again for organizing a successful gathering along with Manong Joe Galleon. I made many new friends and even stronger re-acquaintances that day and I'm very happy.

Can you dig it?

Daniel
PS: Thanks again Bill for the ride!

These videos were submitted to youtube.com by Leo Quitalon of his students in his Sugarland Lightning Arnis group, Kali-Kilat.  Leo's got an active group of young enthusiastic fighters as you'll notice in the videos. There were so many different ages of players in the mix that day. An even number of ages from 17 to 65 years old! This day was a day for those that really loved to apply what they've learned to their matches, and had so much fun. The matches did range from padded stick, rubber dagger, to live stick and even longsword from the Western MA. A new change that will take place in the next gathering will be to make it optional to wear the big padded vest used in WEKAF tourneys. Good. I hate using those things. Some matches will be designated in a new division as "stick only" matches due to some of the participants from the 1st meet that never  grappled in a stickfight before. They want to stay as 'close to home' as they can. There will also be open divisions where everything including punch, kick, knee, elbow, box, throw and ground and pound and submission will be included. Padded vest or no vest with live stick.

These matches were filmed on November 26, 2006 at Hermann Park in Houston Texas hosted by the Houston Stickfighting Association headed by [student of Tim Mousel] Johnathan Bolton and Manong Joe Galleon.

Hey hey guys. LONG time and sadly NO chatty. Last I checke din with
y'all I was in NC I think. Here is a brief update 'bout my
whereabouts.

Firstly: When I went to NC I ended up homeless and pennyless. Made a
move to enter the Army but my eyes failed, and got a DQ. Sooner after
I got a waiver to go get LASIK srgery. My wonderful and highly
supporting family sent me to Oregon and I got LASIK surgery, which
was highly successful.
Secondly: Soon after LASIK and waiting the required medical time
period for my eyes to heal as per army regulation, I went to work in
Idaho at a private golf club, and made buku bucks. End of summer '06,
I went to Japan to improve my Japanese skills, and lived tehre for a
month. Came back in December, and enlisted in the US Army Reserves.

Current: I'm getting ready to ship out to Basic Trainihng/AIT at Ft.
Lenard Wood Missourri, where I will be for 14 weeks. I'll continue to
live in Portland, Oregon whlie I work towards my goal in asian
linguistics, specializing in Japanese. I'm going back to Japan in the
summer, and winter for about 3 1/2 weeks each to a) improve my skills
and b) take the JLPT test taht is administered once a year (very
important).

I WILL be renewing activity in LARPING, and plan to find a place
around here that teachs either A) Krav Maga B) Tai Chi Chuan
(fighting style, not medicinal), and/or C) Kenjitsu.

So, did the deal with the daggers ever get figured out, and people
actually got ahold of them or what? ;) I want my dagger hehe.

Hey guys...Daniel made a post a couple of weeks ago about the Hou. Stickfighting Assoc getting together on the 4th of next month.  This might be a good place to make a showing.  Even if you don't fight...just being there to support others who are would be fun for most also.
Some of the people like to wear a fencing mask and a light street hockey glove on the weapon hand only...and others like to get all padded up.  Normally those who have real lives and have to work the next day.  I've got sets of padding if any of you would like to jump in and play around.
You can go back to Daniel's post on times and the location...for that info...but contact me or post if you would like to go down as a group.

Well, I finally made it to Scarby this past weekend.  WOW.. what an AWESOME time we had. We camped out at Bardwell with William C and his lovely wife Victoria, a couple of friends I have known for many  years through the paintball world.  It was great seeing them again.

It was awesome seeing all my Dallas brothers and sisters again.  I have GOT to say that buying the FOF passes was a GREAT DECISION considering the amount of water and gatorade we drank would have cost us probably half of what we spent on that pass.

I am the proud owner of a brand new Starfire blade. I bought the 32 inch blade sword and have some interesting plans for this blade which I will hopefully get to put into action soon enough.  No, I'm not going to go postal at the office, but I do have some nice plans in the works for it though.

We will be returning to Scarby for Memorial Day weekend ourselves and plan to have some serious fun then with you all again.

We had a guy in the Kansas City area for a while, trying to put a group together for us up there, but we haven't heard from him in a while.
I like the area you're in.  Pretty laid back from what I remember.  I grew up in Jefferson City...up until 81 I called it my home.  Now we're in Houston.  Sort of the reverse of you I guess.  Small town to a place where you need a gun.  LOL
We'll start looking around for some people in your area for you to play with though.  What exactly are you wanting???

-Sorry I haven't replied sooner, just got out of the hospital-ulsers.
Anyway, I like to do things that others don't/won't do, within
reason.. :0)
Think I need a distraction from the world around me. Also need to
find an arts style that is compatible with my body build and age.
Do want to learn some weapons now..ie sword, bo, knife for defence,
mostly for the body/ mind training.
Have a great day...

Hey guys...I've opened up 8 spots to a seminar I'm hosting with Erik Paulson.  Erik Paulson Online - Home

Check out his website to see what he does.  He's a great instructor and if you've never had a chance to train with him, now might be the perfect time.

The seminar is $150 for 2, 4 hour days.  If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call or write to me here.

I'm holding the openings of the seminar to 32 people, and have 24 spots filled already.  The seminar is the first weekend in December.  The 1st and 2nd.
