Fragile Existence
We should not trust in ourselves but in God. —2 Corinthians 1:9

The geological features at Yellowstone National Park fascinate me. But when I walk among the geysers, I’m aware of how close I am to danger. I am walking atop one of the largest, most active volcanoes in the world.

When I read the book of Job, I feel as if I’m walking through Yellowstone on a day when the volcano erupts, exploding the earth’s fragile crust and bringing disaster.

Like tourists at Yellowstone, Job was enjoying life. He was unaware that only a hedge separated him from disaster (Job 1:9-10). When God removed that hedge and allowed Satan to test Job, his life exploded (vv.13-19).

Many believers live in circumstances where it seems as if God, for some reason, has removed His hedge of protection. Others, also for reasons unknown, live in relative calm, seemingly unaware of their fragile existence. Like Job’s friends, they assume that nothing bad will happen unless they do something to deserve it.

As we learn from Job, however, God sometimes allows bad things to happen to good people. Although disaster can strike at any moment, nothing has the power to destroy those who trust Christ (2 Cor. 4:9). No disaster can separate us from God’s love.  — Julie Ackerman Link

Though darker, rougher, grows the way
And cares press harder day by day,
With patience in His love I’ll rest,
And whisper that He knoweth best. —Pentecost

God’s love still stands when all else has fallen.

Interruptions or Opportunities?

Read Mark 10:46-52

Jesus said to [Bartimaeus], "What do you want me to do for you?"

-Mark 10:51 (NRSV)

A young social worker complained to her supervisor that she had difficulty completing her work. "The trouble," she said, "is that people keep interrupting me."

Her supervisor replied, "But those interruptions are your work."

All of us experience interruptions. However, we can also see possibilities that come to us with them. Looking back, most of us can see how some of the most important relationships we have made, some of the most rewarding services we have performed, have come from what we first saw as interruptions.

Jesus gives us a model for dealing with interruptions. During Jesus' final journey to Jerusalem, blind Bartimaeus boldly called out, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" (Mark 10:47). This journey to Jerusalem was an important moment in Jesus' ministry; the salvation of the world was at stake! But Jesus heard Bartimaeus, stopped, and healed him.

The mission God gives us is always about people. We can never justify disregarding God's children. The interruptions in our lives may be God calling us to serve.

Bill Adams (Queensland, Australia)

Prayer
Teach us, Lord Jesus, always to be sensitive to the cry of someone in need. Amen.

Thought for the Day
The Christian's business is caring for people.

Compassion

Wonderful things happen when compassion becomes more than a feeling and develops in to action. Someone you know would benefit if only you reached out. COMPASSION: CULTIVATING A GOOD HEART is a compilation of essays that encourages us to show our care to others each day of our lives.

Humble Valor
Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such men in esteem. —Philippians 2:29

A report by the Chicago Tribune said: “Scores of Americans, from clergymen to lawyers to CEOs, are claiming medals of valor they never earned.” Fabrication of war records and bogus claims of bravery are more widespread than imagined. One man, who falsely claimed a Navy Cross, later felt shame and said that real heroes rarely talk about what they’ve done.

Heroism is marked by an unselfish risking of life for the benefit of another. In Philippians, Paul commends two of his colleagues as true heroes of the faith. Timothy’s unselfishness and proven character gained Paul’s praise as a true son who had served with him in the gospel (2:22). And Paul described Epaphroditus as “my brother, fellow worker, and fellow soldier” (v.25) who risked his life for the work of Christ (v.30).

Paul told the believers in Philippi to “hold such men in esteem” (v.29). Honoring fellow believers for their unselfish service to God is a biblical mandate. It is not hero worship, but an attitude of respect for a life well lived.

Through a word of encouragement or a tangible expression of appreciation, who can you honor today for their humble valor in serving the Lord and helping others in His name?  — David C. McCasland

Heaven’s heroes never carve their name
On marbled columns built for earthly fame;
They build instead a legacy that springs
From faithful service to the King of kings. —Gustafson

Faith in Christ can make extraordinary heroes out of ordinary people.

it is not a "run behind them and prove it" situation,

man...

i hear the confessions. so many are going forth, but their hands are unclean.
the Word is right in front of us, and being preached and taught to us and we
going right along in our stuff, not fighting for our deliverance.

and i hear the excuses of why they can't get it together. i hear the genuine
anguish of being trapped in this, that or the other.

and hear the shame.

i hear and see the "i know i'm wrong, but i don't want to STOP RIGHT HERE and
get delivered and i want to keep serving in my office in the church"

i hear it all over Los Angeles, on one on ones.

it really is time to clean up the flock. you let sin run loose in the House of
God? and look at us, look at some of the horrific things that set the saints on
the wrong path, from "saint" to "ain't".

Ephesians 5:26-27

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or
wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

i feel that? if you are in your stuff? and trying to hang on in the House of
God? but not getting delivered? SIT DOWN, and seek deep spiritual counsel to
GET FREE, GET FREE TO WORSHIP AND SERVE WITH CLEAN HANDS AND CLEAN GARMENTS!!!

Praise God!!! and Thank You Lord Jesus and Thank You Holy Ghost, my friend,
whom i love dearly!

This to all the good black and women looking for one. Someone sent this to me and it made me think and smile and I hope it does the same for you.

Everyone receiving this either:

1. Is a good black man.
2. Has a good black man.
3. Knows a good black man.

Good Black Men are indeed all around us. We pass them on the streets, in the malls and the halls at work.
Most we can't see because we don't know what a good Black man really looks like.He usually isn't flashy enough or rich enough to turn our heads. He might not wear a suit or push a Lexus. He might not have a "body like Tyson with a Denzel face." But, as you mature, you realize it's better to find someone who's got your back than someone who turns your head.

A good Black man doesn't agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. He doesn't just tell you what you want to hear and do the opposite. He doesn't declare how sensitive, sweet, caring, sincere, yada, yada he is (he won't have to because it shows). He has his own opinions and yours may clash, but he doesn't have to degrade you to prove he's right. He even admits at times to being wrong, [especially if you are willing to do the same.]

A good Black man is not going to meet every item on your checklist. He is human with frailties and faults mixed in with all of his wonderful, strong attributes. He needs your love and respect. He needs to feel that you don't live to "catch" him doing something
wrong so you can declare, "Aha! I knew you were a dog!"

A good Black man isn't insecure about his women having great achievements. In fact he is her number one supporter and becomes disappointed with her when she begins to lose herself, for the sake of "not hurting his feelings, or I just want to make him happy."His happiness comes with seeing her excel in her dreams and accomplishing her goals. For as she excels and is exalted, a good woman will bring her good Black man right along with her.

A good Black man doesn't necessarily give you a huge birthday or Valentine's gift. He shows his love in the ways that are comfortable to him. Don't judge  him by TV standards. No one is really living a fairy tale. You'll miss out on your own fairy tale by buying into the myth that our men are no good. It's just not true.

Black Men, we salute you, and thank you for who you are and all you've done.

Pass this along to the "Good Black Men" you know and a few women that need to read it... because the others already know a good black man when she see him!

Good Evening

I want to respond to your posts that was directed towards me.  First off I want to thank you for your caring response. However, I am on a different walk from you. Matter of fact all Christians are. The walks might have similarity qualities to one another but they are different. There is nothing wrong with  going to a clean, poetry, comedy, and big band club. There are unsaved people everywhere, preaching the same message as you, jumping and shouting and speaking in tongues. You chose to live a sterile lifestyle and maybe that best thing for you. That lifestyle you live is not my lifestyle and it not the life I want to live. My walk is different from yours  and my life is different.from yours. I am going to follow my own decision and pray that God protections will  follow and if I should fall I know He will be right there to pick me up.

Be Bless Saintlouis

hang on? keep on poppin' up, and keep on going and going and going, just
because you perused JUST ONE xxx SITE, do you see?

Brother, i been there, and done that, man i WAS PROFOUNDLY CAPTURED, unclean
imagination and wallowed on down in it!!! for a long time!!! so many in the
House of God are having to confess to their Pastors and counselors and GET HELP,
because? if you are a porn addict? and you have to be on the internet for
work, school or whatever? that temptation is always there, brother.

i have learned, don't get recaptured, do whatever you gotta DO for your OWN
SOUL'S SAKE!!! *shudders* man i DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK even to "feels
gooooooood, yeah, feeeellls good, sho 'nuff" to the sins that were pleasurable.
i will be "open season" for demonic forces, and naw, it was RUFF, when i was in
bondage.

i never, ever, yever forget that, Mike.

television? for me? since we had to buy the digital boxes? i haven't bought a
new tv, and don't even own a dvd player, don't care, seems like, although? i
need to watch the news and see what is going on, more often, and know about it,
and pray over situations that are going on.

the music? worldly music?

lemme tell y'all this one, i HAD a collection of '70's jams, i had gave up the
rap music when i got saved, ok? i had a serious thousands of dollars
collection of oldies that was my company, my friend, as well as my Gospel music,
okay? you know i roll alone and music is my only "buddy".

on the first Sunday of september, the choir, and that includes me in the tenor
section at Southside Christian Palace, christianpalace.org is the website,
y'all. we were singing "IS YOUR ALL ON THE ALTAR?"

and the Holy Ghost landed on that church and landed on me like a 747 across my
head, i kid you not!!! i was up there in the tenor section, standing behind the
pulpit, and singing my heart out, wanting to speak in tongues, wanting to dance
a Holy dance, but trying to hold myself together to sing the song. this
anointing, this Presence in the sanctuary was so powerful, the Minister of
Music, playing the piano, GOT UP, AND started directing us with his whole
body!!! POWERFUL!!!

i heard, or shall we say got a spiritual impression into my mind "GET RID OF
YOUR SECULAR MUSIC" and i thought, "naw, you couldn't really mean that" then? IT
HIT ME AGAIN, THE HOLY GHOST GOT ME AGAIN!!! He really doesn't have to pop me
that hard, ok? i KNOW don't play with Him!!! obedience is better than sacrifice
and I NEED CHANGE IN MY LIFE, MY WALK, MY LEVEL OF OBEDIENCE, for i do not want
to miss the mark and go to hell, in spite of me hanging in the church,
functioning in the church but i missed God. i value the anointing, and I WANT
MORE OF IT, i want to be a trusted vessel of God, that He can SEND ME. and i
will go, and do whatever is needed to be done.

well, i went home, tired, disgruntled and got in bed. nobody calls me, unless
they need prayer or counsel, i'm serious. my girlfriend called me 'bout 11
pm-something that night and woke me up and i got to pulling out music and
filling up boxes and bags. man!!! boxed sets of all our favorites, i'm telling
you, all the funk, all the jazz, all the marvin gaye, etc temps, everybody worth
having!!!

i whimpered and whined, sho nuff, i was BEING SEPARATED FROM SOMETHING, SECULAR
MUSIC THAT HAD BECOME AN IDOL, do you understand?

the next day, labor day, i was down at a used music buyer, they bought some of
my music, i was still sniffling and whining, this is truth, i'm transparent,
man, that SOMEBODY MIGHT BE HELPED, Mike. then i went and got some more Gospel
music and went to check out. the young man that was ringing me up, i witnessed
to him, ran out to the car and got some tracts and gave him some instruction on
Bible reading, do it quick, fast but thoroughly and keep it movin'. i got
happy, leaving that corner in hollywood.

then? i went back to my old stomping ground, skid row, lost skangeles. i went
to a day center for women, and just at that moment, there were two sisters on
the patio, jammin' their oldies. i asked the two "do you have a place to stay
or are you homeless?" they told me they had places to stay. i asked them "do
you really like oldies?" they replied in the affirmative. i said "come out to
the car you about to come up" and they did!!! they got a lot of music from me,
and i left rejoicing.

then? i hit a densely populated corner on skid row, and was out there
witnessing, praying, handing out tracts, anointing people and there were some
folks that accepted the Lord Jesus as their Lord and Savior, sho nuff, brother.
i was out there about 3 hours or so, walking talking counseling a little, and
praying etc and MY FEET WERE ON FIRE by the time i left that corner.

IS YOUR ALL ON THE ALTAR?

or is there compromise in your Walk with God?

Israelites have rejected your covenant, broken down your altars, and put your
prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are
trying to kill me too."

11 The LORD said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the LORD,
for the LORD is about to pass by." Then a great and powerful wind tore the
mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in
the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the
earthquake.

12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after
the fire came a gentle whisper.

13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and
stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, "What are you doing

Hope Amid Destruction

Read Jeremiah 30:1-9

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will restore the fortunes of my people . . . and I will bring them back to the land that I gave to their ancestors.

-Jeremiah 30:3 (NRSV)

AS a doctor, I was able to be a part of a medical team that was sent to an area devastated by an earthquake. Many lives had been lost and buildings destroyed.

Our relief team went to different villages talking to people who had survived, consoling them and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ wherever opportunity arose. Gradually, as our team carried out the relief work, I could see God at work. The victims of the earthquake had realized they had no security in worldly possessions. Yet they were looking for purpose in life after losing much -- even some of their loved ones. Because the disaster had opened doors for us to share God's love with the people in a practical way, bringing both physical and spiritual healing, the people began to turn to God.

Something similar happened when Jeremiah prophesied the destruction of Jerusalem and exile to Babylon. For God's people, that was not good news. Yet Jeremiah also prophesied later that God would bring restoration. Jeremiah saw something positive in the midst of destruction -- God renewing the covenant. And God still does that for us.

Ajit Barkataki (Maharashtra, India)

God’s Embrace
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another. —Romans 12:10

Soon after her family left for the evening, Carol started to think that her hospital room must be the loneliest place in the world. Nighttime had fallen, her fears about her illness were back, and she felt overwhelming despair as she lay there alone.

Closing her eyes, she began to talk to God: “O Lord, I know I am not really alone. You are here with me. Please calm my heart and give me peace. Let me feel Your arms around me, holding me.”

As she prayed, Carol felt her fears beginning to subside. And when she opened her eyes, she looked up to see the warm, sparkling eyes of her friend Marge, who reached out to encircle her in a big hug. Carol felt as if God Himself were holding her tightly.

God often uses fellow believers to show us His love. “We, being many, are one body in Christ. . . . Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them” (Rom. 12:5-6). We serve others “with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 4:11).

When we show love and compassion in simple, practical ways, we are a part of God’s ministry to His people.  — Cindy Hess Kasper

Teach me to love, this is my prayer—
May the compassion of Thy heart I share;
Ready a cup of water to give,
May I unselfishly for others live. —Peterson

We show our love for God when we love His family.

Dear group,

I wanted to share some of the things I am learning with you. As we all
know the Bible teaches us in many places how we must treat our fellow
human being with dignity and respect. One of the main God-given gifts
that separates man from beast is the ability to speak. However, words
can build a person, or if misused, destroy him! It can sometimes be
difficult to stop ourselves from sharing some juicy gossip, or pointing
out someone's flaws, etc. The Bible teaches us, however, that by
practicing restraint in this area and speaking with holiness, we build
our spiritual muscles. Not only do we make ourselves better people, we
make the world a better place!

Blessings,
Angelica

Dear Beloved,
THE IMPERISHABLE WORD
"Take another scroll and write on it all the words that were on the first scroll, which Jehoiakim king of Judah burned up" (Jeremiah 36:28, NIV).
"The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God stands for ever" (Isaiah 40:8, NIV).
For many years, the Lord through prophet Jeremiah had predicted doom for the people of Judah because of their sins and unrepentant stance to Him in spite of many warnings and entreating to them to come back to God. As another way of warning, the Lord told Jeremiah to write all the words of the prophecies in a scroll with the notion that the people of Judah may probably turn back to God when they read the written words, and God would forgive them.
Jeremiah did as God told him by writing the words of the prophecies in a scroll and gave them to his secretary to read to the people. When the people heard the words, they told Jehoiakim, their king. It is surprising, however, that instead of repentance, the king cut the scroll in pieces and burnt it in a brazier. Nevertheless, to let him know that the words of God are imperishable, God told Jeremiah to rewrite the words of the prophecies in another scroll.
Throughout the history of the Church, many other kings and other rulers had tried to burn and destroy the word of God, but it still stands firm till today. In fact, the Bible, the written word of God, is the most translated book and the bestseller of all time. All attempts to destroy it by discrediting it prove abortive.
Many people are still trying to "burn" the spoken words of God today. They use their knife of criticism, neglect, indifference, and disobedience to "cut" the word of God they hear and read and try to dump it in the trash bin of oblivion. However, Jesus Christ says, "I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished" (Matthew 5:18, NIV).
In what way are you also trying to burn or destroy the word of God? Remember, it is imperishable. It stands forever. Jehoiakim tried to burn it and he was punished for it. Take heed to its warnings lest you also is been judged by it.
In His service,
Bayo Afolaranmi (Pastor).

Thoughts from II Timothy 3......Signs of last days

Delighted to meet you again through the below thoughts from third chapter of II
Timothy. Hoping that you would find it useful. The following list may be used
for self examination as well.

Last days started with the resurrection of Jesus Christ and outpouring of the
Holy Spirit (in the day of Pentecost) on the body of Lord Jesus Christ and would
continue till the second coming of Christ. The matured Christian leader and
faithful follower of Christ, Paul lists the following signs as marks of the end
times

1. People will be lovers of themselves: The very purpose of family, friend,
neighbors and society is to express love. Unfortunately, we are becoming more
selfish and at times we choose convenience and comforts at the cost of others'
discomfort and inconvenience. Are you selfish? Are you enjoying better life at
the cost of others' problems and sorrows?

2.Lovers of Money : In the world we live, we are valued by the name, fame and
money we have. At times to be better valued by the worldly system, we sacrifice
our health, Character , family and friends to earn more money and fame. Are you
directed and dictated by the love for money?

3. Boastful: We have in us a inbuilt feature that expects praise, respect and
appreciations. We impress by what we express. In order to impress and influence
others we boast about our being and doing, All the boasting (including Spiritual
ones) comes from Devil and self. Are you boastful?

4. Proud: Being proud is acting against God. It is co-sister of being boastful.
Proud makes us to think that we are some one great and superior, taking credit
for what we have done not realizing the grace of God and the direct or indirect
helps from others. Biblical principle is Blessed are the poor in Spirit. God
resists proud. Proud blocks us from God and Others. Are you proud?

5. Abusive: Do you abuse the life, health, opportunities, relationships etc?

6. Disobedient to their parents: As a dependent, do you disobey parents?

7.Ungrateful: We tend to forget those who helped us along the way. Are you
ungrateful to anyone?

8. Unholy: God called and chose us to live holy life in this unholy world. Are
you living up to the expectations of one who called you?

9. Loveless: God's will concerning us is that we have to love our God with full
heart, mind and Soul and to love fellow human beings. Do you demonstrate your
love for God and for others daily?

10. Unforgiving: Forgiveness is vital identity of Christendom. The condition for
receiving the forgiveness from God is to forgive others (refer Lord's prayer).
Unforgiving in our life will block the blessings from God. Is there anyone in
your life, whom you cannot forgive?

11.Slanderous: Everyone tend to make mistakes. We are told in Bible that Love
covers all sins. Faithful Christians pray for the failed Christians rather than
finding pleasures in broadcasting the failures and mistakes of the failed ones.
Do you slander or Gossip?

12. Without self control: Even though we live in diverse adverse conditions that
arrest our spiritual growth, the spirit of God empowers us to win against the
lust of flesh, love of the world and the pride of life. We are expected to put
best efforts to guard our faith and holy life. Do you practice self control?

13. Lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God. What do you choose- God or
World?

14. Having the form of Godliness but denying its power. Do you practice
hypocrisy?

15. Being conceited, rash, brutal and not being lovers of good. Are you gentle
and good?

The Heat Of Our Desire
As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. —Psalm 42:1

Pastor A. W. Tozer (1897–1963) read the great Christian theologians until he could write about them with ease. He challenges us: “Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire after God. They mourned for Him, they prayed and wrestled and sought for Him day and night, in season and out, and when they had found Him the finding was all the sweeter for the long seeking.”

The writer of Psalm 42 had the kind of longing for the Lord that Tozer spoke about. Feeling separated from God, the psalmist used the simile of a deer panting with thirst to express his deep yearning for a taste of the presence of God. “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (vv.1-2). The heat of his desire for the Lord was so great and his sorrow so intense, he did more weeping than eating (v.3). But the psalmist’s longing was satisfied when he placed his hope in God and praised Him for His presence and help (vv.5-8).

O that we would have a longing and thirsting for Him that is so intense that others would feel the heat of our desire for Him!  — Marvin Williams

My heart’s desire is to know You, Lord,
To walk close beside You today;
To know Your grace, Your love, Your power,
For You are my life and my way. —Cetas

Only Jesus, the Living Water, can satisfy the thirsty soul.

The Walk

Read Philippians 4:4-9

Give liberally and be ungrudging when you do so, for on this account the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake.

-Deuteronomy 15:10 (NRSV)

WHILE my two preschool-age children played at the park with my husband, I took a walk. We had recently discovered that I was pregnant. Though I rejoiced, I was also troubled. Every day was the same: I changed diapers, put away toys, read board books, and answered lots of questions. I wondered, What is the purpose of it all?

I came to an open church and wandered in. I sat in the front row and prayed, "Why am I doing this?"

As I prayed, I realized that I wasn't living my life in thanksgiving for God's many blessings, particularly for the sacrifice of Christ. I had allowed daily tasks to take away the joy of following Christ, and I had developed a grudging heart. After a time of prayer, I dried my eyes and was able to go back to the playground to join my family with a cheerful heart.

These days, I remember that no matter what God gives me to do in life, I can "do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him" (Col. 3:17, niv).

Sonya A. Haskins (Tennessee, USA)

Prayer
Thank you, God, for all your blessings and for reminders of your gracious love. Amen.

Thought for the Day
As we follow Christ, our daily tasks can become the work of God.

Free to Serve

Read 1 Peter 4:12-16

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

-Micah 6:8 (NIV)

WEEK after week, I look at people in my church congregation. Many are "regulars," but some are new people. People come with Bibles in hand, joyously singing and praising God. After church we have tea and a chat. Then everyone leaves. Most I will see next Sunday. A few will be involved in various church activities such as small groups, but most will not see one another until next Sunday.

As I think of our religious freedom and the way we don't take advantage of it, I compare our situation to that of our brothers and sisters in other countries who are persecuted for being Christian. Can we imagine how lonely they must feel? People are still being jailed and victimized for loving our Lord and Savior, for reading the Bible, for going to church.

We who are free to serve God openly can use our time more productively. We are free to use our resources to help others who don't know God and don't go to church. We can help those far away by praying and contributing to provide Bibles for them. What other ways can you think of to use the time and freedom God has given us?

Shaun McHardy (Cape Town, South Africa)

Prayer
Lord, please be with your flock worldwide, especially those Christians who live where they are in the minority. Amen.

Thought for the Day
We who are free to serve God have an obligation to live our faith openly.

The Persecuted Church
If anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter. —1 Peter 4:16

One October morning in 2006, a woman and her six children were forced to witness an attack on their husband and father. His assailants tried to force him to deny Jesus but he refused. He continued to proclaim Christ as Lord and died praying for his family. The family is determined to follow Christ, even in their grief.

Another man was sentenced to 3 years in prison for allegedly insulting another religion. He’s an outspoken Christian with a passion for Christ. He and his wife and children continue to be faithful and refuse to deny Him.

Persecution for the Christian faith is as real in our world as it was for the Jewish believers in the early church to whom Peter wrote. He prayed, “May the God of all grace, . . . after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you” (1 Peter 5:10).

Today is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. These prayer points from Open Doors USA, a ministry that’s committed to encouraging persecuted Christians, can help guide us as we pray:

• Pray for the safety and faith of the secret believers in countries where it is illegal to share about Christ.

• Pray for the health, perseverance, and encouragement of believers who are imprisoned for the gospel.

• Pray that those whose loved ones have died due to martyrdom will rely on God for their strength.

Together, let’s bring our fellow believers before the Lord in prayer.  — Anne Cetas

The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. —Tertullian

How Was I To Know?
Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. —Ephesians 4:30

It was high-school concert season, and the music students were preparing for the big Christmas extravaganza. The teacher had clearly communicated every detail to the students and to the parents—on two different occasions—and the time for mandatory rehearsal was clearly spelled out.

But on rehearsal day one panicky mother called during practice to see what time her teenager was supposed to show up. Another called to say, “Oh, we’re taking Tommy to Grandma’s. It’s okay if he misses rehearsal, right?” When the teacher reminded the parents that this required practice had already started, she heard, “Why didn’t somebody tell me? How was I to know?”

Just as this teacher was troubled that her clear instructions were ignored, is it possible that God is troubled by our tendency to ignore His clear instructions? In 1 Thessalonians, Paul reminds us that his God-inspired message tells us “how to live in order to please God” and that those instructions have “the authority of the Lord Jesus” (4:1-2 niv). The Lord is grieved, Paul explains, when we ignore His teaching and live our own way (Eph. 4:30–5:2).

Let’s make a point to read God’s instructions and then live by them—with no excuses.  — Dave Branon

God’s Word was given for our good
And we are to obey,
Not choose the parts that we like best,
Then live in our own way. —Hess

There is no good excuse for ignoring God.
