Hi there. I'd be grateful if you might circulate, post, and otherwise share the
two attached job notices. Both might interest community development,
social-venture, and policy folks looking for new employment.

- One position is project director of a large Kellogg Foundation grant that aims
to increase cross-pollination between the smart-growth movement and the
educational-equity movement.

- The other position is to serve as my number two on a variety of social
ventures, particularly the launch of Bay Friendly Chicken, a small-scale,
community-friendly alternative to Tyson and Perdue on the Eastern Shore of
Maryland.

Both positions pay $35-40,000, will last at least one year (though they could
last longer), and will be based in my office in downtown Takoma Park, Maryland.
While I don't have a budget to fly people in from around the country, I'd
welcome applications from outside the Washington area.

Email Mr. Shuman for more info.

Global: A Conference on the World Economy, April 2-4
at The University of Cincinnati, in McMicken Hall.

Goals: "Global: A Conference on the World Economy":
The purpose of "Global: A Conference on the World
Economy" is to educate the public on issues
surrounding free trade agreements and their effects on
local economies. At Global, people will be thinking,
discussing, skills-sharing, acting-out, painting, and
debating issues directly and indirectly dealing with
corporate and cultural globalization.

Info: While the focus of GLOBAL TWO is on issues
pertaining to corporate globalization and economics,
many of the workshops deal with philosophy, DIY
tactics & skills, and activism. Also, there will be
several different “discussion gatherings”. The
discussion gatherings will deal with topics such as
planning for upcoming actions (IMF/Worldbank, G8, and
RNC) to figuring out ways of incorporating radical
ideas into everyday life (i.e. it is easy to complain
about corporate globalization, but how do we stop
corporate globalization when we directly benefit from
it?) to discussing ideologies and their influence on
the anti-corporate globalization movement. Various
actions, lectures, concerts and art shows will precede
the week before the conference starts. At the
conference, there will be spaces to create art, play
instruments, show films, present writing, create
puzzles, and anything else which comes to our minds
inbetween now and the conference. The first night of
the conference, there will be one major fiesta in the
name of having fun. On Saturday, there will be another
party and concert with the group Ghostmice and Robert
Blake. During the conference, there will be space
available for people to hold caucus meetings (i.e.
Ohio Caucus, Great Lakes Caucus, DC Caucus, etc).

REGISTRATION: THERE IS NO REGISTRATION FEE. However,
registration is important because then the Global Crew
knows how much food and housing spaces to get. To
contact Eira (the registrar) please e-mail her at
eerieEira@.... You may e-mail her your
registration information by simply e-mailing her your
name and location. If you are sending in a group
registration, list how many people are coming and
their names.

HOUSING: To reserve free housing for Global, please
e-mail Ya-Sin at xchubbyx@.... In the e-mail,
please note if you are coming in a group (and how many
people are in the group who will need a space to stay
at). Also, please indicate in the e-mail if you are
allergic to anything, smoke, and/or bringing
children/pets. Please reserve housing as soon as you
get this e-mail so that you and your host can get in
contact with each other before the conference.

FOOD: Light Breakfast and fair trade coffee will be
provided on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, lunch
will be provided on Saturday and Sunday as well from
local restaurants. Attendees are encouraged to bring
dishes with them so that we can have a potluck. It
would also be great if attendees brought their own
plates, cups, and utensils with them.

TRANSPORTATION: There is a transportation board on the
Global website. If you can provide a seat or two or
if you need a ride to global, please post it on the
board by e-mailing Nathan at nathan22t@.... If
one needs to be pickup from the Airport, Amtrak, or
Greyhound stations, please indicate that in the
registration e-mail to Eira at eerieEira@....

ENTERTAINMENT: The first night (April 2, 2004) of the
conference will begin with a "Sweatfree Clothing"
fashion show at 7pm. Watch as sweet activists walk
the catwalk for justice. After that, there will be a
free concert featuring local musicians at about
8:30pm. Then, the fun does not stop there. There is
an after-party after the concert where folks will have
the opportunity to boogie-woogie and network.

On the second night of the conference there will be a
show with Ghostmice (based out of Bloomington, IN and
on Plan-It-X records), Robert Blake, and two t.b.a..
More info will be provided at the conference. After
that, there will be another party, b.y.o.b. (bring
your own beverage).

TABLING: There will be more than 30+ groups tabling at
Global. In order to table, e-mail Ya-Sin at

Greetings!

This is my first time posting to this list, so please let me know if my
message does or does not correlate with the type of information you all
hope to gain from this listserv.

I am writing on behalf of YES! Magazine, an ad-free, quarterly journal
published by the Positive Futures Network, a nonproft based on Bainbridge
Island, WA. YES! is an award-winning journal that highlights inspiring
stories of individuals and communities engaged in creating a more just,
sustainable and peaceful world. YES! offers stories of positive and
practical solutions to a broad range of environmental and social justice
challenges and profiles everyday heroes-- young and old, at home and
abroad-- who are making a real difference. A major theme brought up again
and again through this magazine is sustainable development.

We are always looking for ways to reach and support students with
complimentary materials. If you are planning or attending any
conferences, classes, events focused on sustainable development, please
contact me-- I would like to know!

We also offer several different internship opportunities at the magazine.

EQUAL EXCHANGE INTERFAITH PROGRAM SEEKS MOTIVATED STAFF

Equal Exchange's Interfaith Program is seeking staff for positions
that
include a mix of customer service, education and outreach, and program
development. Must be motivated, comfortable with our customer base,
and
able to thrive in a participatory work environment.

For an application, please send a cover letter and resume to
autech@..., fax to 781-830-0282, or mail to:

Interfaith Hiring Committee
Equal Exchange, 251 Revere St., Canton, MA 02021

All applications must be received by March 31, 2004.

Equal Exchange is a worker-owned fair trade organization and gourmet
coffee
company. Our mission is to create more fair trade relationships
between
small farmers in the developing world and consumers in North
America. We
bypass the conventional marketing system by cutting out the middleman
and
buying 100% of our coffee, tea and cocoa directly from the farmer
according
to internationally recognized fair trade standards. Producers not
only
obtain a higher price for their products, but gain greater control
over
their lives.

Equal Exchange is a for-profit company, but our profits are
accountable to
the mission of fair trade. Unlike most companies who seek to maximize
profit, our goal is to maximize benefits to farmers and their
communities.
Our investors want to make the world a better place, not simply to
receive
returns.

Equal Exchange's Interfaith Program works in partnership with
congregations
and faith-based relief, development and human rights organizations.
Our
mission is to introduce communities of faith to the inequities of
global
trade, provide them with the tools to discuss and understand these
issues,
and provide them with an alternative in which they can participate
directly.
We conduct direct outreach and provide educational materials to help
individuals spread the word about fair trade within their own
congregation
and in their surrounding community. Because much of the program is
partnership based, staff must be able to represent both Equal
Exchange and
our interfaith partners. Currently, the program includes formal
partnerships with Lutheran World Relief, the American Friends Service
Committee, Catholic Relief Services, the Church of the Brethren,
Mennonite
Central Committee (U.S.), the Presbyterian Church (USA), the Unitarian
Universalist Service Committee, the United Church of Christ, the
United
Methodist Committee on Relief, and Mennonite Central Committee U.S.

To date over 8,000 congregations, educational institutions, offices
and
retreat centers have been involved in our program, purchasing over
200 tons
of fairly traded coffee, tea and cocoa in 2003.

Environmental Justice ConferenceGlobalization and the Environmental Justice
Movement:
An ASLE/UAS Symposium
Tucson, AZ - September 23-25, 2004

The 2004 Symposium on Globalization and the Environmental Justice
Movement invites academics, activists, artists, scientists, graduate
students, and government and industry representatives to submit proposals
for papers, panels, posters, performances, workshops, roundtables, and
readings. The symposium, sponsored by the Association for the Study of
Literature and the Environment (ASLE) and the University of Arizona South
(UAS), will focus on environmental justice, urban nature, native lands,
and grassroots activism that is raising questions about the effects of
globalism, corporate capitalism, and the selective/disproportionate
distribution of toxic sites at native sacred sites and in the
environments of low-income and people of color communities. The goal of
the symposium will be specifically to push our conversations about
environmental challenges beyond a focus on environmental racism and
toxics and towards the proactive partnerships, successful community
activism, and emerging conversations between government, industry,
science, the academy, activist organizations, and local communities that
are giving a new generation ideas for sustainable alternatives and hope
  for the future.

One of the prominent features of the symposium will be a field trip, popularly
dubbed the "Colonia Tour", which will be guided by Teresa Leal, founder and
Codirector of the Southwest Network for Environmental and Economic Justice.
Those electing to take the trip will travel by bus to
Nogales, Sonora, just one hour and fifteen minutes south of Tucson.
There, we will tour one or more of the "colonias"; (small squatter
villages built to house maquila workers) as well as one or more of the
more progressive maquilas which are attempting to address environmental
problems. Leal will discuss the struggle of environmental groups who
face the complicated high tech issues caused by globalization and
international trade agreements which ignore the social, cultural and
environmental impacts on local communities on the U.S./Mexico border. The
field trip will also include a demonstration of a partnership between
community members and scholars from the University of Arizon's Bureau of
Applied Research in Anthropology who are working to re-vegetate hillsides.

The symposium invites discussion on a diversity of topics from a variety of
  disciplines, including:

- Interdisciplinary approaches to environmental justice, activism,
literature, history, anthropology, political ecology, and ecocriticism
- The political ecology of free trade
- The impact of globalization and transnational capitalism on the
environment
- How to bring writing and teaching to bear on public policy and
educational initiatives, public outreach, publishing, and environmental
stewardship
- How to facilitate collaboration between the various sectors of the
environmental movement, government, academia, and the arts
- How to teach courses in environmental literature, history,
anthropology, etc. which address the environmental justice and toxics
movements, political ecology, globalization, corporate capitalism, etc.
- How to move discussions of environmental justice beyond a focus on
environmental racism and towards practical solutions for solving problems
and promoting sustainable alternatives (such as organic farming, community
co-ops, etc.)

*Note: Conference organizers will make every effort to keep housing costs
low and/or potentially free for activists and graduate students. Spanish
translation will also be provided. Activists and graduate students should
note their individual housing and/or language needs on their proposal
submissions.

Send inquiries and one-page proposals by May 31, 2004 (email preferred; no
attachments please) to BOTH Joni Adamson and Tina Gianquitto.

Earth Day 2004 is a great opportunity to focus attention on the
impact that population growth has on the environment and the
urgency to protect and preserve our planet. During the month of
April, Earth Day events and celebrations will take place all
over the country and around the world. On April 22, 2004 spread
the word about how the environment is affected by population
size.

Water is the focus for Earth Day 2004. One of the most immediate
problems around the globe is water scarcity. This Earth Day over
1.2 billion people in the world do not have access to safe
drinking water and half of the world's 6.3 billion people lack
adequate water purification systems. Check out the Population &
Water fact sheet below for other specific information on the

SAVE THE DATE - April 26th
National student teleconference with Michael Dell

Michael Dell has issued a public response to student organizing in
support of the Computer TakeBack Campaign and the full page ad run
back in December calling on him to "take it back, make it clean, and
recycle responsibly." His letter can be read on-line at
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/corporate/environ/
Dell%20Open%20Letter.pdf.

More importantly, Dell and GRRN are organizing a national student
webcast and teleconference with Michael Dell for April 26th, from 2:30
- 3:30 central time (3:30 - 4:30 eastern; 1:30 - 2:30 mountain; 12:30 -
1:30 pacific). The event is being set up so that all a student needs
is a telephone to listen in and participate, but students with broadband
internet connection can also watch the event on a live webcast. The
event and logistics will work best when groups of students view the
event together in a classroom, a seminar room, or a conference room
that is internet connected and has large enough screens. A dorm room
would
even work if it had a good internet connection and big enough screen.
Each viewing location on your campus will need to designate a point
person to serve as the contact.

This is truly an historic event. Stay tuned for regular updates and
details on the event, but here is what you need to do to get started -

1. SAVE THE DATE AND TIME.
2. Spread the word and get other students, organizations and
faculty interested.
3. Find a good location on campus (try to find one location,
though we can do more than one if necessary) and reserve it for the
26th at
the specific time
4. Designate one contact person per location on your campus who
will participate in the event and to whom all relevant information can
be sent
5. Send the contact person's name, college/university, e-mail
address, and contact phone number to webcast@...
6. Stay tuned for more details
7. Begin recruiting students to participate in the event. Get
professors to make the event part of their classes.
