Dear colleagues,

We would like to draw your attention to two important conferences:

1) Degrowth in the Americas at McGill University in May and 2) Strategies for a New Economy at Bard College in June.

These conferences are in alignment with the work of the Forum on Religion and Ecology, which has seen ecological economics as a key dialogue partner from our formation in 1998.

With all good wishes,
Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim

Degrowth in the Americas

International Conference
Montreal, Quebec, Canada
May 13-19, 2012
http://montreal.degrowth.org/

Speakers include: David Suzuki, William Rees, Mary Evelyn Tucker, John Fullerton, Alain Gras, Joan Martinez-Alier, Serge Mongeau, Elizabeth Peredo Beltrn, Juliet Schor, Peter Victor, Franois Schneider

Want social and environmental justice?
Montreal conference to explore alternatives to growth

Sustaining our future means rethinking the relationship of economic growth to human well-being and environmental integrity. The International Conference on Degrowth in the Americas meets this May in Montreal to explore the possibilities of a post-growth world.

From May 13-19, 2012, Montreal will host academics, activists, artists, environmentalists and indigenous peoples for the International Conference on Degrowth in the Americas. A fixation on economic growth is at the root of our environmental issues and social inequalities. Degrowth challenges traditional economic paradigms that fail to account for environmental and social costs and are obsessively driven by GDP and other flawed measures of well-being. Degrowth aims to achieve human happiness and well-being with less material consumption. Family, music, art, culture, community, and meaningful employment are some values that drive more qualitative increases in well-being.

These issues are a priority for many people around the world, as demonstrated most recently by the Occupy Movement. A new way forward that increases both environmental and social justice is essential.

Building on degrowth conferences in Paris in 2008 and Barcelona in 2010, the conference will place the dcroissance movement that began in Europe in the context of the Americas. The Conference will be hosted jointly by Concordia University, HEC, Universit de Montral, McGill University, and UQAM. Registration is now open athttp://montreal.degrowth.org

Strategies for a New Economy

Bard College's main Campus
Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, USA
June 8-10, 2012
http://neweconomicsinstitute.org/conference

We are at a turning point in history. Rising temperatures are now recognized as a sign of our planet in crisis. Inequities between rich and poor, North and South, grow ever deeper. The global economy has failed in its promise to produce and deliver basic goods in an efficient manner for an expanding population, leaving increasing numbers in abject poverty.

The environmental crisis, the equity crisis, and the crisis of distributed production all have their roots in the current economic system, with implications for our culture, for our society, and for our health and well-being.

What would an economy built on principles of fairness and sustainability look like? How do we model it; where is it emerging; how do we collectively strategize to fully implement it? These are the pressing questions of our time.

In response, the New Economics Institute is convening "Strategies for a New Economy," a conference June 8-10 at Bard College on the Hudson River in New York State. It will gather together what are often diverse and scattered efforts to reshape our economic system, place them under one tent, and raise the flag to announce that transitioning to a new economy will mean engaging politicians, researchers, media, educators, citizen activists, business leaders, financial experts, scientists, union workers, cultural leaders, advocates for the disenfranchised, and youthall working together to achieve a common goal. The three-day conference will include over 60 workshops, plenary gatherings, and participatory strategizing sessions organized around 10 theme areas. "Strategies for a New Economy" will highlight best research and best practice under each theme and ultimately demonstrate that a decentralized, sustainable, cooperative economy is already taking shape. Registration is now open. We invite you to be part of the dialogue.

K.c.,

Register for Power Shift New York!Weve got an exciting announcement: in less than four weeks, hundreds of young people are converging in Albany for Power Shift New York!

Early registration for Power Shift NY ends Sunday. Register now for just $15.

Organized by the Green Umbrella, a network of young people in New York, this couldnt be happening at a more important time. Momentum is building in the fight for clean energy, but the looming decision on fracking in New York threatens our progress. This spring we will come together and demonstrate loud and clear to Governor Cuomo that youth voters demand a ban on fracking.

Power Shift NY, April 27-29 in Albany, will feature:

  • Incredible speakers which well be announcing this Thursday on the call. Be the first to hear this exciting news!

  • Trainings and strategy sessions to address the issues that matter the most to us: taking back our political system, stopping fracking, and building the clean energy economy right here in New York.

  • Action! Were planning a major demonstration to demand Governor Cuomo support a ban on fracking - you dont want to miss this!

Last April 10,000 of us came together for Power Shift 2011 and that was pretty awesome. But this spring were coming together in NEW YORK to continue to build a movement around the issues that were facing locally and regionally.

So what are you waiting for? Register before next Sunday (4/8) at midnight and pay only $15: http://ny.wearepowershift.org/register

Hey SustainUSers!

Please Forward: Call for Papers- International Conference on Inequality and Sustainability

The Stockholm Environment Institute is accepting abstracts for either papers or posters for an International Conference on Inequality and Sustainability. The conference, which will be held 9-10 November of this year at Tufts University near Boston, Massachusetts in the US, is hosted by the Stockholm Environment Institute and the Center for International Environment and Development at the Fletcher School, Tufts University.

See the attached call for papers, or visit the conference website: Call for papers.

About the Conference

Debates over equitythe fair distribution of resources, costs, and benefitsand a closely related topic, economic inequality, have arisen in the wake of the recent financial crisis. The gap in wealth and income between those who came out well after the crisis and those who did poorly has been widely noted. However, in a longer view this can be seen as part of a much broader debate in which conflicting normative goals raise troubling questions, complicated by uncertainties over how societies and economies do and should work. If we are to build a prosperous society, does inequality do more to help or hinder the pursuit of that goal? As we simultaneously seek an equitable and just society, then what level of inequality is consistent with an equitable outcome? The pursuit of a sustainable society raises further questions, with some arguing that greater income equality and equity may be preconditions for sustainability. This conference, to be held at Tufts University, will bring together sustainability, equity, and inequality researchers to learn from one another and discuss these important questions. The deadline for abstracts is April 27.

To register or submit an abstract: http://conferences.sei-international.org/index.php/development/IS2012

Thanks in advance for your consideration and help in getting the word out about this great event!

Cheers,

Amanda

Dear Balatoners,

Greetings from Japan.

We, Japan for Sustainability, are putting out the call for college
students who wish to participate in a learning journey to Tohoku in
August 20-26, 2012.

We will host a Learning Journey in Tohoku in which six overseas students
and six local students travel together to Tohoku Japan, see people,
places, and projects in Tohoku for recovery efforts as well as its
devastating impacts, and have dialogues reflecting upon their expeiences, the
systems aound them, and participants' own mental models personally and
collectively.

Our first attempt will focus on Miyagi, where the impacts of the
earthquake and tsunamis were the most devastated. We use system-oriented
learning methods such as the U process extensively. We will report the
journey itself and students' reflection -- their emerging inner voices
to the world. We hope that it goes beyond students' personal developnent
and that we as civilization will gain learning from students'
experiences in Tohoku.

We would like to receive applications from many youths around the world
who is willing and potentially able to contribute to enhancing
sustainability and resilience of our social systems. We will provide
meal travel expenses during the journey and a roundtrip ticket from
their nearest international airport. Participants have to obtain a

Hello GIEE,

As you might know about a month ago I started working with Earth Economics (http://www.eartheconomics.org) as the Director of Business Operations and Strategic Partnerships, here in our East Coast Vermont Office. At EE we are in a period of rapid growth and have two immediate openings. (1) A full-time position for a "Software Developer" with the appropriate Ecosystem Services education and experience. (2) A freelance UI/UX Designer for calculating the economic value of ecosystem and their services. Both positions are based in the Greater Seattle Area. Salaries/contract rates are based on experience and are competitive in our sector.

Since I am not a computer geek nor a nerd ;-) - two groups I admire and admittedly would like someday to be a part of - do send your questions and inquiries to the contact person in the attached job description as she is in a much better position to answer your questions. Of course if you have other comments/inquiries relating to the EE Culture, other opportunities, possible relationships with GIEE etc do contact me.

Best regards,

Azur

PS: In the months ahead I will be looking for a good intern to work with me - ask any intern that's work with me, its fun and usually leads to a good network and maybe even a job. Should you have an interest or a proposal...

PERMACULTURE DESIGN COURSE HOSTS ROSTER OF INSTRUCTORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

PDC FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT & SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP

AT QUAIL SPRINGS, SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

(excerpts from April 2012 Press Release)

Monetary assistance and training without stewardship ethics seems to be the standard for international aid today. With over 14 billion given by the U.S. Agency for International Development alone, it is increasingly important to ensure the results of aid are regenerative....

By using permaculture as a sustainable design framework to help secure community and individual stability, Quail Springs is innovating a new pathway for the international development community. Their upcoming Permaculture Design Certification course (PDC), taught by professionals with experience in international development projects, will teach participants sustainable systems thinking, design strategies and provide a comprehensive approach to permaculture as a tool for future development projects.

The instructors, hailing from Quail Springs in Southern California, all the way to Africa, span a gamete of professions whose various experiences make up an impressive group whose international efforts have seen much success.

Warren Brush, Julius Piti, Loren Luyendyk, Pete Schwartz and Lyn Hebenstreit constitute just five of the equally established twelve instructors involved in the course. Warren Brush is the co-founder of Quail Springs, Sustainable Vocations and numerous other permaculture and peacemaking oriented projects. Warrens extensive understanding of permaculture and work with his organizations, as well as others, has sent him around the world to work in numerous development projects side by side, be it with other permaculture organizations or child soldiers in Africa.

Julius Piti, a Mozambican, has worked extensively in Africa. Julius work in community building led him to the Chakuwa village permaculture project in Zimbabwe. Chakuwa became one of Africas most successful post-war success stories by employing permaculture through an integrated agricultural approach. His constant work and dedication has made him a prominent peacemaker and community-building expert in Africa. His successes in using permaculture for community building in Africa bring an in-depth first hand understanding of permacultures potential for sustainable development projects.

In addition to the founders of different permaculture organizations above, the instructing roster also includes a university professor. Pete Schwartz is a physics professor at Cal Poly focusing on society, development, and sustainability.  His student research involves developing low-impact technologies appropriate for developing countries (and for the USA as well), including concentrated solar power, passive solar heating, improved cooking facilities, and electric transportation. The practice and application of these studies can be exemplified by the collaborative summer school in Guatemala, Guateca which represents a natural extension of Schwartzs academic, technical, and societal efforts.

Loren Luyendyk and Lyn Hebenstreit both add to the diversity of permaculture talent and knowledge available to participants. Luyendyks international permaculture work with Surfers without Borders and Lyn, the founder of the international organization Global Resource Alliance (GRA) will combine with the rest of the instructors to display the variety of potential applications for permaculture in international development projects, highlighting sustainable agriculture, to community development.... Subject: ASI at UC Davis - research position with Sustainable Sourcing project

Position posting below, and full announcement attached. Please forward to anyone in your network who may be interested. Thanks!
April 2012: Postdoctoral/MPP/MBA research position available at the Agricultural Sustainability Institute at the University of California, Davis
The Agricultural Sustainability Institute(ASI) at UC Davis, established in 2006, provides a hub that links initiatives and education in sustainable agriculture and food systems across the broader University of California and with other partners across the State of California and, increasingly, across the nation and farther afield. ASIs mission is to ensure access to healthy food and to promote the vitality of agriculture today and for future generations. We address these goals through integrative research, education, communication and early action on big, emerging issues. For more information visit:http://asi.ucdavis.edu
ASI, with the support of Mars, Inc, is pleased to announce a new initiative to enhance sustainability of global agricultural raw materials sourcing, with particular emphasis on key agricultural commodities. The project is intended to critically review current best practice and prototype indicators of key dimensions of food system sustainability at various scales (from global concerns to sustainable intensification at the field level) and to assess and test indicators for a comprehensive range of sustainability issues.
Position description: Assessment of sustainability indicators, impacts, and strategies to address underlying sustainability issues related to global agricultural commodity production and sourcing

From this work, indicators will be selected to build decision-making tradeoff frameworks/platforms to enable and promote the inclusion of agricultural sustainability issues in agricultural commodity sourcing decisions and also analyze strategies to counter negative effects. The researcher is also expected to collaborate on writing peer-reviewed publications.
Desired qualifications:We invite applications for the research and assessment position on sustainability indicators and strategies from recent recipients of an MBA, MPP, or PhD in agricultural or development economics, sustainability science, agroecology, agronomy/soil science, public policy, agribusiness, or related fields. The ideal candidate will have worked extensively with conceptual models and spatial or spatiotemporal models of social and environmental externalities associated with agricultural and/or economic practices and the use of indicators, have experience with facilitation of participatory multi-stakeholder engagement activities, and have some exposure to agribusiness, commodity markets, and/or international agricultural development strategy. At a minimum, the candidate should have extensive experience in working with data at a variety of spatial and temporal scales and excellent communication skills.
Requirements:
  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture concepts and issues
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with a variety of collaborators and stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to produce peer reviewed publications
  • Affinity for collaboration
  • Excellent problem solving skills with ability to analyze situations, identify existing or potential problems and recommend solutions
  • Facilitation skills and experience with participatory stakeholder engagement (preferred)
  • Experience with national and international environmental and social indicator data (preferred)
Please see attached pdf for full position description.

SUMMER 2012 CLIMATE CHANGE COMMUNICATION INTERNSHIPS
Application Deadline – April 17th

The National Park Service (NPS) cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage. INTERNS NEEDED: PROTECT THE BAY, BAN THE BAG
Environment Rhode Island
9 South Angell St. 2nd Flr.
Providence, RI 02906

Summer Internships: Flexible, but ideally May through August
Fall Internships: Early September through early December.

Environment Rhode Island is seeking interns for either the summer 2012 break or the fall 2012 semester to coordinate local efforts to ban single use plastic checkout bags in towns around Rhode Island.

About Environment Rhode Island: Our mission is to research and advocate the policies and build and mobilize the public support necessary to win positive change for the environment — nationally, such as through our efforts to enact stronger vehicle efficiency standards, and locally, like with our work to protect Narragansett Bay from pollution.

About plastic pollution in Narragansett Bay: Rhode Island uses hundreds of millions of disposable plastic checkout bags every year. Too many plastic bags end up as litter in Narragansett Bay and off our coast, and it's creating an ecological disaster.

About the campaign: Nothing we use for a few minutes should pollute our waters for hundreds of years. Luckily, the solution is simple: Ban plastic bags. This movement is gaining exciting momentum around the country, and it's time for the Ocean State to protect its waters by joining the effort.

About the Internship: Right now we're conducting initial outreach in towns and cities around Rhode Island to introduce the bag ban, and during the summer and fall we'll need to follow through to make sure bag bans are put on town and city government agendas. Because this campaign is growing so quickly, we're looking to ramp up the effort — getting public officials on board and making sure they know their constituents are calling for action.

In helping us build this campaign, you'll learn skills in environmental protection, grassroots organizing, campaign planning, coalition building, media outreach, and direct advocacy.

To apply: Just send an email to Channing Jones at cjones@... explaining why you want to work on the campaign and what your availability will be. He can be contacted with questions by email or at 401-421-6535.

LAND REFORM SUMMER RESEARCH INTERNSHIP

Coal River Mountain Watch

Background:

Coal River Mountain Watch is a community-based environmental justice organization that is dedicated to fighting mountaintop removal coal mining and the impacts of the coal industry on community health and safety.  One of the major factors that both enables mountaintop removal mining in Appalachia and hinders the development of economic alternatives to coal is absentee land ownership.  In the late 1800s and early 1900s outside corporations bought up vast tracts of surface and mineral rights from local mountaineers who were often illiterate and didn't understand the value of the coal and mineral resources that their land held.  According to the last comprehensive study of land ownership patterns in Appalachia, done in 1981, nearly 60% of West Virginia's land is owned by landholding corporations; the percentage is even higher in coalfield counties.  These landholding companies don't pay their fair share of property tax, leading to lower tax revenues for the counties.  The fact that West Virginians for the most part don't own the vast wealth of their land is one reason why coal mining regions remain consistently poor.  Leasing the land for coal development allows the vast mineral wealth of the region to flow to outside landholding corporations and coal corporations at the expense of community health and safety.  Land ownership is also a serious barrier to economic diversification in central Appalachia; the ownership of natural resources by absentee corporations inhibits the development of local agriculture, community-owned renewable energy, and other sustainable alternatives.

Coal River Mountain Watch is working with a coalition of other West Virginia organizations to update and expand on the 1981 land ownership study, starting with a pilot study of one or two counties this summer.  As part of this effort, we are looking for a summer student to do some background research on plausible strategies for land reform and property tax reform.

Research opportunity:

Coal River Mountain Watch is looking for a motivated, independent research student (graduate or upper-level undergraduate) with a background in geography, land use planning, law, or related fields to explore plausible strategies for land reform and property tax reform.  This would involve understanding how property taxes and mineral taxes are currently structured in West Virginia and what would be required to change them; looking at models of successful land reform efforts in other areas; and understanding how land trusts and other legal structures could be used to purchase and protect land from certain extractive uses.  By the end of the summer, the student should produce a briefing paper laying out plausible strategies for land reform in southern West Virginia and directions for future work.  There is some flexibility to tailor this research opportunity for your academic requirements.  This position is unfunded but we can work with students to secure funding through their schools.

Requirements:

  • Background in geography, land use planning, law, policy or related fields
  • Graduate student or upper-level undergraduate with prior research experience
  • Ability to spend summer in southern West Virginia

SEA SEMESTER AT WOODS HOLE – FALL 2012 UPDATE

The first class of our new Marine Biodiversity & Conservation program will arrive on campus April 9. We are thrilled to introduce this new semester option, which is the first to focus on biology and the first to offer 400-level credit from Boston University.

As we look ahead to Fall 2012, space and financial aid are still available, and we hope that you will point your students in our direction. I'd like to remind you that we operate on a rolling admissions basis, so there are no application deadlines. We are also currently meeting
all students' demonstrated need! With an average grant of $10,400 last year, we have made SEA Semester affordable for all qualified and motivated students.

Fall 2012 Program Options:

  • Ocean Exploration: The original SEA Semester program, perfect for any student from any major who's interested in learning more about the ocean environment.

  • Colonization to Conservation in the Caribbean: Designed with Environmental Studies and Humanities majors in mind, this program stems from the idea that we cannot address current environmental issues in the Caribbean region without understanding its complex history.

  • Oceans & Climate: An upper-level science focused semester that looks at the role of the oceans in global climate change. Students use cutting edge research techniques during a 6-week research voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti, and examine how science can be used to affect public policy.

C2C: DON’T WASTE YOUR TWENTIES / NEW BARD CEP GRAD SCHOLARSHIPS

As graduation approaches, I am writing to reach out to capable seniors or alums who are unsure of their plans for the next year. At this critical moment in human history, we can’t afford any future sustainability leaders spinning their wheels for a year. We have a few spots still open in Bard CEP’s MS programs in Environmental Policy and Climate Science and Policy for next fall. We are pleased to announce two new $20,000 scholarships for the MS programs—one for domestic students and another for international. We are holding an Open House at Bard on April 21st for folks to learn more.
