Description
For discussion and exchange of information related to the Wittman Tailwind, Nesmith Cougar, and similar aircraft, like the Buttercup, Big X, Daphne, Fourrunner and O&O--focus is on building and flying designs by Steve Wittman and related designs and modifications by others. Pictures can also be posted if moderate size.
Picture is Dave Conrad's beautiful W-10 over Wisconsin in Feb 2012 finishing the test period for his Tailwind. Plan to see him at Baraboo this year!
The W-10 Tailwind is simple, light, and FAST! Red Hamilton's Race 37 has set the bar at 235 MPH cruising speed (though admittedly he was in a race at the time)!
For builders and other interested folks, all of the old newsletters can be found in the "Files" section. Also there is a lot of other helpful construction information in the Files Section and many pictures of construction and flying in the Photos Section. Also note that "Clement modifications" are recommended for the W-10 tailwinds, and he also has the plans for the trike gear. Jim Stanton has a list of drawing corrections and other information. The Swiss group has put together a Compendium of builder's hints and comments, which is almost a builder's bible for construction. All information can be found in the "Files" section.
The annual Baraboo Tailwind Fly-in for 2012 will be held July 19-22--the gathering will be the weekend before Oshkosh, as usual. Fly over together from Baraboo to Oshkosh the Sunday before the official first day of Oshkosh--though the event is getting into full swing by then. All types of aircraft, drive-ins and walk-ins are welcome--just bring your interest in Steve Wittman's designs. More information will be in posts as we get closer to the event.
The West Coast Fly-in for 2012 will be held on the Second Sunday in
October, the 14th --at the Bakersfield Municipal Airport (L45). Hosted by EAA Chapter 71. Come on down for lunch and great discussions of Wittman designs--All aircraft and drive-ins/walk-ins welco

Re: Fuel System Instalations
That sounds like a good idea to me to have a valve in the filler neck. Another idea might be to put safety foam in the tank a done in many auto racing classes,

Alex, sounds like a good idea to me. Also, be sure that your tank vent is located below the bottom of the tank, so that it will be above, in the event of a

Re: Fuel System Instalations
I haven't gotten there yet, but have been wondering about moving the fuel filler to the right side rather than through the windshield. ... -- Don in Okla.,
