As part of the ongoing Braj Mahotsav opus at IGNCA,
Bharatanatyam Performance by Geeta Chandran
and her Natya Vriksha Dance Company
On Thursday, 26 November 2009, 6:30 p.m.
IGNCA Lawns, 1 Central Vista Mess, Janpath, New Delhi-110 001
***
Geetas participation in the Mahotsav is culmination of her decade-long work on interpreting the poetry of Braj in Bharatanatyam. She has regularly performed sewa at the Sri Radha Raman temple in Vrindavan. Presented at various times of the year, these performances have followed the ashtayam cycle of Braj. Geeta was awarded a Senior Fellowship from the Government of Indias Department of Culture for research on Haveli sangeeta and its interpretation in dance. The Natya Vriksha Dance Company, which Geeta leads and which has built a formidable reputation for its crisp choreographic presentations, has frequently performed in Vrindavan.
Arangetram is an important occasion in the career of any Bharatanatyam dancer. After several years even a decade or more -- of arduous training, when the Guru is confident that the disciple can sustain a solo performance, the arangetram is announced. The arangetram thus is an honour to the Guru; a momentous rite of passage, it marks the first milestone in the disciples journey into the ocean of Bharatanatyam.
