The Boards of the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA International) and the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) announce an important step towards the creation of a joint quadrennial Sport, Culture and Human Rights event (1QE) in 2018.

To provide a strong basis for both organizations to work together, a face to face meeting between the FGG and GLISA International is planned for the weekend of May 5, 2012 in Montreal to discuss a contract that commits the two organizations to work together on joint world events in 2018 and beyond. Board representatives from both organizations will work together to reach an agreement.

The FGG will be represented by board members Dennis Sneyers (USA), Shamey Cramer (USA), and Klaus Heusslein (Italy). GLISA International will be represented by Julia Applegate (USA), Wessel van Kampen (the Netherlands), Nelson Lee (USA), and Daniel Vaudrin (Canada). Both Boards and their legal advisors will be on standby during the weekend to provide feedback and make decisions.

The LGBTQI community has asked both organizations to work together so that there will be one quadrennial event. In response, representatives of both organizations have worked hard over the last two years to create a Memorandum of Understanding agreement for the 1QE. While an agreement has been reached on many issues, the negotiations have been difficult and the two sides thus far have been unable to reach a full agreement.

The Montreal meeting will be the final attempt by both organizations to reach an agreement for 1QE in 2018. Since the deadline for initiating the site selection process for the 2018 host is nearing, the objective of this meeting will be to reach a full agreement on the MOU between the FGG and GLISA International by May 6.

Once the MOU is agreed upon, a Request for Proposal (RFP) document will be issued. This will intitiate an open and transparent process to select the host for the 1QE in 2018.

For additional information and comments, please contact GLISA International and the Federation of Gay Games:

PRESS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montreal, May 6, 2012

The Boards of the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA) and the Federation of Gay Games met in Montrealon May 5 and 6, 2012 in an effort to come to an agreement on the creation of one quadrennial event (1QE) for 2018. After over two years of discussions and negotiations, both organizations regret to announce that even though every attempt was made to do so, an agreement was not reached.

Both Boards, with the support of their memberships, had every intention to re-unite the international LGBTQIQ community around a new event based on three components: Sports, Culture and Human Rights. This1QE wouldhave combined the achievements and long standing history of both organizations and their events.

The Boards have decided that at this moment, both organizations are unable to reconcile their differences in time for the 2018 event cycle.

For the final negotiations for the Agreement, the FGG was represented by Dennis Sneyers, Shamey Cramer, Klaus Heusslein and Kurt Dahl;GLISA international was represented by Julia Applegate, Nelson Lee, Daniel Vaudrin and Wessel van Kampen.

The Boards are disappointed, but hope remains that an agreement will be reached over the next few years to create a future joint event for the next cycle of 1QE and that the future discussions will be fruitful.

The boards of both organizationswould like to thank the many members, partner organizations and individual participants that have continued to support the attempts to re-unite the international LGBTQIQ community around Sport, Culture and Human Rights.

Special thanks to the Fierté Montréal Pride for providing us with a meeting venue. Thanks also go to Jason Stone and Catherine Meade for their contributions to the negotiations.

It is the intent of both organizations to continue negotiations in the future to provide the global community with great events.

See you in Antwerp in 2013 and Cleveland in 2014.

EQuality World

The worldOutgames are delighted to present a new LGBT movement: EQuality World. This is an array of new and recurring activities, united in an integral umbrella movement whose aim is to work towards full acceptance of the LGBT community in every modern society: coexisting in work, education, religion, sport and culture. EQuality World is synonymous with the constant effort required to attain worldwide freedom and rights for the LGBT community. The movement celebrates these rights during representative events at various times and levels, with specific measures aimed at problem areas or situations: where, for example, there is still a lack of openness, where there is oppression or discrimination, especially with respect to young people's coming-out. EQuality World is our gateway to many corporate sponsors who wish to offer support in the long term rather than just for one event. So EQuality World will continue to exist after the worldOutgames in Antwerp and will share its legacy with future events. For more information: info@...

The visibility of the worldOutgames both in Antwerp and abroad is growing. We’re happy that collaboration with several magazines and newspapers is in progress. We’ll also be present at various sports tournaments and pride events, so look out for our ambassadors and promotion teams, as well as checking out the promotional calendar on our website. DVV 10 miles Antwerp

A huge promotional event was the 10 Miles Run in Antwerp on 22 April 2012. This is the area's largest mainstream sports event, bringing together more than 25,000 runners and over 50,000 visitors. We had a delegation of African LGBT asylum seekers running in worldOutgames T-shirts. This action received a lot of national press coverage (radio and newspapers), and we were able to spotlight their situation and their cause. Check here to get a feel of the event:

Eurogames Budapest

The EuroGames in Budapest, Hungary, will be held from 27 June to 1 July 2012. The worldOutgames Antwerp are happy to be supporting the EuroGames. It promises to be an exciting event in a marvellous city. The organizing team is doing a great job providing a high-class tournament in challenging political conditions. In 2007 Antwerp hosted the EuroGames, and this provided a huge boost for the city, for both the LGBT community and the city in general. It was then that the foundations were laid for bringing the worldOutgames to Antwerp in August 2013. If you haven’t yet registered for Budapest, check out the link:

We'll look forward to seeing you there.

IGLA 2012 Championships in Reykjavik

Another partner and a great destination is Reykjavik. The first weekend in June will see the biggest international LGBT event ever organized in Iceland! The IGLA Championships event is hosted by the gay sports club Styrmir in co-operation with the Icelandic Swimming Association, the City of Reykjavík, the Ministry of Culture and Sports and gay tour operator Pink Iceland. The IGLA Championships – International Gay and Lesbian Aquatics will be held from 30 May to 2 June. Participants are scheduled to arrive from all over the world to compete in swimming, water polo, synchronized swimming and diving events. The Mayor of Reykjavík is scheduled to make an appearance and if his past track record is anything to go by it's likely he’ll show up in drag to show his support. Business Traveller Magazine voted Reykjavik among its top five ‘Cities To Swim In’ in 2009 due to the unique culture and attitude to the sport. Swimming in Iceland is more than a sport, it’s a way of life. For further information on the activities, lodging, flights and registration visit www.igla2012.org.

July 2012 Newsletter of the Federation of Gay Games

Here's a special 2012 Olympics edition of the Participate! Newsletter

Pride House 2012 is on!
In our last edition, we announced our goal of creating a Pride House in London during the Olympics. We are very pleased that indeed, a Pride House will take place from 3-12 August at CA House and other venues.
Major thanks to Lou Englefield of FGG member organization Pride Sports who has led this project, and for the FGG Emy Ritt, in charge of the venue, and from External Affairs Marc Naimark, Kate Rowe and Carl Schultz. We hope to have several FGG volunteers present, including FGG Board members Sonia Abécassis and Shamey Cramer.
Pride House will display exhibitions from the EGLSF ("Against the Rules") and Jeff Sheng's "Fearless" featuring out student athletes, provided at the request of the FGG's Les Johnson
Pride House will offer viewing of Olympic events, talks and discussions, video screenings, and various receptions and parties. Outside of CA House, Pride House will offer various sports activities, and a youth day, as well as a celebration for closing ceremony of the Olympics.
Follow the news on the FGG pages at pridehouse.gaygames.org.
FGG launches call to action for an end to homophobia in the Olympic movement
Meeting at Pride House will bring together public and organizations to propose next steps
The FGG, with the support of fellow partners in Pride House 2012 EGLSF and GLISA, has called for a meeting of individuals and groups interested in concrete action to fight against homophobia in the Olympic movement. Please visit the Pride House website for details: pridehouse2012.org.
"From Games to Games" an invitation to understanding
We are pleased to announce "From Games to Games,", a program to encourage the participation of athletes, coaches and staff of the 2012 and 2014 Olympics in Gay Games 9 by waiving registration fees.
The goal is to build bridges between mainstream sport and LGBT sport, by encouraging athletes and others from mainstream sport to discover our event. These Olympians are role models today, and leaders of sport in the future, so creating these ties is a plus for our movement.
The program does need to be self funded, and we encourage donors not to forget our scholarship program, which has allowed hundreds of athletes and artists from developing countries to be part of the Gay Games.

Support Matthew Mitcham!
Gay Games Ambassador Matthew Mitcham will defend his Olympic gold medal in diving
The FGG has two Ambassadors competing in the London Olympics, cyclist Judith Arndt and diver Matthew Mitcham. We particularly want to cheer on Matthew to thank him for his recent support for the Gay Games movement.
To do so, we've created a Facebook page (Support-Matthew-Mitcham-at London-Olympics), which we encourage you to "like.". Please post your messages of encouragement, and why not a video of support?
We've created our own video for Matthew, produced by Shamey Cramer with support from FGG Board members Marc Naimark and Doug Litwin.
You can view it HERE
Out in London 2012: Who Have We Missed?
The FGG has compiled a list of 25 out athletes, coaches and officials participating in London 2012, which we believe to be the most complete available.
We have taken advantage of sources in French and English, but think we may be missing some athletes from media in other languages. If you know of any, please email us at blog@... and london2012@..., including your source.
Thanks in advance for helping us improve our information!

Registration underway for Gay Games 9
As you know, base registration is open for Gay Games 9. And a first group of sports, including Aquatics, Basketball and Softball, is also open. Other sport and culture events will be rolled out over the coming weeks.
Under the new risk-shariing model, the FGG benefits directly from each registration, and to encourage a strong start, a generous donor offered a grant that awards the FGG one dollar for each registration through the end of June, for the first 1,000 registrations made. This grant was not quite used up, and the donor has agreed to extend it to the end of July.
We encourage you to register now to take advantage of lower prices, and to help they FGG reach this goal of 1,000 registrations by the end of July.
Visit www.gg9cle.com for the link to registration. See you in Cleveland+Akron in August 2014!
First phase of bidding for Gay Games X closes
By the 15 July deadline, no fewer than seven cities responded to our the FGG’s Request for Information for bidders for Gay Games X. The cities are Amsterdam, Limerick, London, Orlando, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The next step is the release of the Request for Proposal document at the end of July, which describes the requirements for bidding organizations' bid books, which will be due at the end of February 2013. Learn more at 2018.gaygames.org.
Annual General Assembly set for Sofia
The FGG will be holding its Annual General Asssembly in Sofia, Bulgaria from 19-21 August, with the support of our member organization Tangra Sport. Despite economic difficulties, we are pleased that we will have a solid quorum, with delegates from around the world participating. The FGG is particularly pleased that every open board position has one or more candidates. Guests are welcome, in particular for our official dinner on Sunday 19 August. Info at gaymes.info/sofia2012

PRESS RELEASE

For immediate release                                                       Toronto, August 03, 2012

GLISA International Sponsors Pride House during the London Olympic Games

The Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association is proud to be a sponsor of Pride House 2012, which opens Friday August 3 at the CA House, Limehouse Basin, in the East End of London.

Pride House is an initiative of Pride Sports UK and is supported by a number of international and UK LGBT organizations (see below).

A much larger project of the same name to be held in a London park was cancelled a few weeks ago due to lack of funding.  Since then, Pride Sports, GLISA member organization, has taken the lead in setting up a more modest, but equally important venue.

The full program of activities for Pride House can be viewed at www.pridehouse2012.org and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/pridehouse2012 . The program includes exhibitions and videos as well as a chance to relax and watch the Olympics on TV at the bar.  A full sports program at various locations around London is also being finalized, which includes a GLISA sponsored football tournament planned for Sunday.

A large number of local VIPs are expected to attend a reception and a media event to encourage the IOC to be more proactive about inclusion, and for sports in general to be more inclusive.  Two GLISA board members will be in attendance to support the cause.

Invited guests include out Olympian Mark Tewksbury, Chef de Mission for Canada, a former gold medal swimmer in Barcelona 1992 and a founder of World Outgames 2006 in Montreal. Uffe Elbæk, the former CEO for the World Outgames 2009 in Copenhagen and current Danish Minister for Culture and Sport has also accepted an invitation to attend.

Please see the above website and Facebook page for program changes, which may occur at short notice.

Budapest made a difference!

A team of five from the worldOutgames were present at the EuroGames in Budapest at the end of June. Besides our presence with a booth in the Rainbow Village, we also really wanted to meet the participants and learn from the games. Our three sports managers Dennis, Freija and Bram met with many sportsmen and women, visiting venues etc. to bring that input back to our organization. Louise, our PR manager, met with interesting partners and Danny was able to build a network for future volunteers. All were impressed by the good vibes during the games, thanks to the organization, volunteers and participants. Nice to know that the Hungarian parliament voted a law to punish gay-bashing. A step along the way!

New look and feel for worldOutgames Antwerp 2013

Ivan Denis, openly gay archery junior world champion, potential Olympic participant for Rio 2016, athlete and soldier, is also ambassador for the 2013 Antwerp worldOutgames. He was also the patron of a competition that the worldOutgames organized to find models for our new worldwide promotion campaign. The photo shoot was last weekend, and we created several new looks with many locals. Besides the pictures we were also interested in the stories behind the faces of our models, and we got an amazing group of people together. These stories will be used in our upcoming campaign. If you want to get a sneak preview of the photo shoot, go to the worldOutgames Facebook page: www.facebook.com/outgames2013

We’d like to thank our partners in realizing this photo shoot: the entire team of our superb partner in communication www.crossmediathinking.be, our fantastic photographer www.marcdrofmans.com and wonderful www.huisbaeyens.be for their costumes.

A newborn family member, our Pink Giant

Antwerp has a tradition of Giants, so we wanted to be part of it too. We created the first LGBT Giant, our Pink Giant. It is 4m high, and it’s face is half male half female. Our Giant was created with the help of professional giant builders and local artists and had its birth during Antwerp Pride mid-August. The response was huge, in national media (newspapers, radio and television). In September we’ll be participating in 2 other major Giant events: the world record attempt of a maximum number of Giants in Deurne on September 8th (302 are registered, broadcasted live on tv) and the Year of the Giants in Borgerhout on September 15th. Become friend on Facebook and see the latest pictures and events of this new member of our family or walk with us as a volunteer on these events.

The worldOutgames will be in less than 12 months from now. You can be one of them and make the difference. We need helping hands both during the event in August 2013 and before. You'll get plenty of opportunities and chances to gain new skills and friendships along the way. Time is important, use yours to create more equality. Go to our website or mail at volunteer@.... You can tell us about your skills, dreams, experiences and anything else that can contribute to a successful event. For the next weeks, we are looking for volunteers to help us parade with the Pink Giant, in the true Antwerp tradition.

October 2012

Mariela Castro met our team

Mariela Castro, daughter of the Cuban president Raúl Castro and director of the Cuban National Center for Sex Education in Havana and activist for LGBTQ rights in Cuba, was in Belgium to support the launch of a new sexology course at the University of Ghent. Afterwards she met with some of our team members. Mrs Castro was pleased to hear about the worldOutgames and we agreed that collaboration between her country, herself and her people would be possible during the worldOutgames in all three of the event's main cornerstones: the human-rights conference, the sports programme and the cultural festival. We’re very excited about this opportunity.

Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo at UN General Assembly

Our Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo spoke at the UN General Assembly in New York. Being the first openly male gay prime minister in the world, he was very courageous in placing LGBTQ rights on the agenda, declaring that same-sex marriage and adoption, which have been legal in our country since 2003, were aspects that Belgium was proud of. He also mentioned the worldOutgames coming to Antwerp next year, calling it ‘a gathering of tolerance and diversity’. We’re very proud of our prime minister. The entire text of his speech can be read following this link http://www.world.outgames.org/index.php/en/communication/speech-dirupo

Agreements with LGBT press

We’re proud to announce that with several press concerns, both in print and online, deals have been made to promote the worldOutgames. So check your favourite magazines, blogs, websites and let us know whether you’ve heard about us. If we’re not yet in your preferred media, please give us their contact details so we can approach them too.

Collaboration with European sports tournaments

This autumn our promotion team is visiting several LGBT sports tournaments. We were present in Paris at the Forum of the FGLS and in Barcelona during their Panteres Grogues multi-tournament. We will also be promoting the worldOutgames during the multi-sport tournaments in Bern, Switzerland and Eindhoven, Holland the coming weeks. If you still want to register for those tournaments, visit their websites. If you’d like to have us at your sports tournament, do let us know.

Hotel deals during the worldOutgames

We’re happy to announce you that we’re at the final stage of arranging the best hotel deals for you while visiting the worldOutgames. As of 10 November at the latest you’ll find on our website a list of all preferred hotel partners. These hotels will offer you the best prices available to ensure that you spend a wonderful time in our great city of Antwerp. Should you have any other enquiries regarding your hotel booking, please send a mail to hotels@....

Choir festival

Several choirs have been submitting their preregistration to compete in next year's Choir Festival at the worldOutgames Antwerp 2013. In order to give even more choirs the chance to participate, we've decided to postpone the preregistration deadline. Will you and your choir join us for this wonderful 3-day tournament, comprising 2 days of elimination rounds open to the public, followed by a Grand Finale during the final weekend of the worldOutgames? PRESS RELEASE
GLISA North America ends discussions with Denver North American Outgames bidding
organization.

GLISA NA Terminates Discussions with Denver Bidding Committee for next North
American Outgames
Vancouver, May 1, 2013 - The Board of GLISA North America ("Gay and Lesbian
International Sport Association - North America") announces that it has
regretfully terminated discussions with the Denver Outgames Host Committee to
hold the next North America Outgames.

"We really did not want to take this action," said Bruce Townsend, President of
GLISA North America. "But we have not been kept informed of any significant
development in the planning of the three components that make up an Outgames-
Sports, Culture and Human Rights."

In 2010 GLISA NA accepted the bid to hold the next North America Outgames in
Denver. During the 2010 Cinco de Mayo weekend, representatives from GLISA North
America conducted a site visit and held weekend- long meetings with Denver
individuals. "We had a great visit with many wonderful Denver folks during Cinco
de mayo; they made a good start and we expected to see on- going progress on
areas identified for improvement," said Greg Larocque, former President of GLISA
North America and Bid Committee Chair.

In the intervening time, GLISA North America has not been informed of
substantive progress on issues noted during the site visit. Recently, an
additional issue of a conflict of interest has arisen which has not been
constructively addressed.

GLISA North America is committed to the delivery of quality Outgames for the
North American LGBTQI community. The importance of safe, welcoming and inclusive
opportunities to play one's sport, discuss one's Human Rights and celebrate
one's accomplishments cannot be understated. "GLISA North America will not go
forward with an event that does not continue the history of success of previous
North America Outgames," according to Duy Ngo, GLISA NA Licensing Committee
Chair.

GLISA North America is pursuing other opportunities for the North America LGBTQI
community and will provide information as it becomes available.

GLISA North America has hosted two successful Outgames to date, in 2007 in
Calgary, Alberta, the 25th anniversary of the Western Cup, and in 2011 in
Vancouver, British Columbia. Both events brought several thousand participants
and locals out for the three components and captivated each city during the
Outgames activities. The different sport activities occurred over a week of
events; the Human Rights Conference lasted three and five days (Calgary and
Vancouver respectively); and the cultural activities included celebrations from
every dimension in the community including featured performances by Lily Tomlin
(Calgary) and Carol Pope (Vancouver).

<<...>>
Good Afternoon!
I hope this spring finds you all enjoying all the beauty that the season has to offer.
As members of GLISA North America, I wanted to be sure to let each of our members know of a very difficult decision that your Board of Directors needed make. Regretfully the Board of GLISA North America has terminated negotiations with the Denver Host Committee. After 2 years, we simply were not able to put in place a working Partnership & Licensing Agreement. Attached you can find the press release.
Effective immediately the Board of GLISA NA is issuing an ITN (Intent to Negotiate). The same basic guidelines are used for the ITN as in the RFP but this process allows both the Board of GLISA NA and the potential Host to begin much sooner to provide a full and profitable 3rd North America Outgames 2016.
If your team or city is interested in submitting an ITN, please contact me at your earliest convenience with your Letter of Intent. The timeline is very aggressive to allow maximum planning time so time is of the essence.
Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at glisanorthamerica@...
All the Best,
Bruce Townsend

May 10, 2013 - GLISA-NA eNews
Spring has arrived at GLISA North America.  We are excited to share with you some news stories / events we thought you would be interested in.

Letter from the President

Happy Spring!
It is a great honor that I have been elected as the President of GLISA North America. I thank you all for your support.
I also want to celebrate the election of Duy Ngo, Vice- President, Victor Elkins, Treasurer, Diane Smith, Secretary, Gordon Dunbar, Debbie Storrs and Clinton Brown. With my election as President, we now have a new Past President in Brad Bostock. Congratulations everyone!
I also want to welcome to the GLISA NA family the Miami Mavericks and the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus. Both clubs were admitted and have full voting rights. Congratulations!
Well this year has already been a whirlwind…same- sex marriage popping up every where, equal rights being established and professional sport celebs coming out. Who knew we could ever be this progressive in North America? The US is quickly catching up to our brothers and sisters in Canada. It’s about time and it is certainly a welcomed change.
I hope everyone is getting ready for a full summer with the presentation of the 3rd World Outgames Antwerp 2013. I am so ready!!
I am also doing a lot of traveling for the 4th World Outgames Miami Beach- Miami 2017 as we have been invited by quite a few governments in the Caribbean, Central and South America to give presentations on the World Outgames movement. These presentations will not only give us the opportunity to spread the word about the Miami Beach- Miami hosts, but it will also allow me to connect with leaders of the regions to spark the beginning of GLISA South America. All very exciting!!
This Board is committed to the GLISA movement and we will be bringing on some exciting changes within the year. If you have any feedback or questions, please do not hesitate to contact me or any Board member.
Wishing you all the Best Summer Ever!
All the Best from Our Sun- Kissed Paradise,
Bruce
During the Miami Beach Gay Pride parade, the organizers of the 4th World Outgames Miami Beach- Miami 2017 supported the 3rd World Outgames Antwerp 2013 uniquely. The 12 cycling “party cycle†was a hit with everyone. The crew was joined by Commissioner Deede Weithorn of the City of Miami Beach. It was a lot of fun and there was plenty of eye- openers for the 15 block parade. The front banner was from Antwerp and the rear banner (not shown) proudly displayed the just approved 4th World Outgames logo. Photo courtesy of Mark's List
This Memorial Day Weekend (May 23–27), Seattle's Rain Country DanceEmerald City hoedown May 23-27 Association is hosting the Emerald City Hoedown, also the 20th annual convention hoedown of the International Association of Gay/Lesbian Country Western Dance Clubs. GLBTQ country-western dancers from all over North America will be attending, with over 350 attendees expected at the height of the weekend — the largest IAGLCWDC convention hoedown in many years. The event will benefit local charities Camp Ten Trees, providing summer camp for GLBTQ youth and those from GLBTQ families, and PFLAG of Seattle, earmarking funds to serve non-metro and rural areas in Washington state.
The weekend features over 50 dance workshops and education forums — everything from two-step and line dance classes to cowboy boot care and how to make your club a non-profit — with 30 instructors, including world-class names such as John Lindo, Michael Barr, Michele Burton, Ari Levitt, and Judy McDonald. In addition to three full days of classes, there are four nights of dancing, with breakout rooms dedicated to swing and line dancing as well as country couples dancing. The weekend also plays host to the IAGLCWDC championship dance competition, featuring competitions in seven couples dance styles, line dancing, and dance teams.
And if that's not enough, Rain Country has set up a number of social events during the weekend, ranging from morning and late night snacks to dedicated social hours for both women and men, on to a whale watching tour, a wine and chocolate tasting tour, and a city landmarks dance tour of the downtown Seattle core — line dancing at Pike Place Market, swing dancing at the Space Needle, and so forth. Seattle is a major vacation destination, and Rain Country wants their attendees to be able to take good advantage of what Seattle has to offer.
Weekend package registration is available for $139, and various smaller packages — day passes, evening dances, and single workshops — will be available at the event. For full details on the event, please visit http://www.emeraldcityhoedown.com.

Pride Fest St. Louis

Team Saint Louis is gearing up for the 34th annual Pride Fest St. Louis, June 29 – 30th in downtown St. Louis! TSL hosts and manages “Athlete’s Villageâ€, an interactive element that engages attendees and, places all the sports organizations and vendors in one area.  Festival-goers can test their skills on the rock climbing wall, ride the mechanical bull managed by Gateway Gay Rodeo Association, run in the Pride 5k hosted by St. Louis Frontrunners, compete in the Pride Grass Volleyball Tournament or, cycle in the inaugural Pride Ride, managed by TSL Cycling.
This year’s festival theme will be “Celebrate The Past To Awaken The Future.†In celebrating Pride’s theme, TSL congratulates our very own Betty Neeley and Tom Walsh.  Betty has been a part of TSL and the St. Louis LGBT community for decades and, will be celebrated in the Parade as Grand Marshall.  Tom will be receiving the Felton T. Day Community Service award for demonstrating the spirit of community service and dedication.  Tom served as TSL President for 10 years, and began or, co-founded many of the LGBT sports in the St. Louis community.  TSL is honored to have Betty and Tom as our teammates!
As a precursor to Pride, TSL is partnering with Opera Theatre of St. Louis for the world premiere of the jazz opera, Champion. The opera, composed by Grammy Award Winner, Terence Blanchard and Pulizter Prize-winning playwright, Michael Cristofer, is inspired by the true story of World Welterweight, Emile Griffith, who claimed the title of Champion in a fatal 1962 fight.  The secret he kept of his sexuality would only come to light after he retired from the ring, when he himself became the victim of an attack outside a New York City gay bar.  The opera Champion is a world premiere about strength, courage and forgiveness.
In February, TSL co-sponsored the panel discussion Out for the Count: A Legacy in Athletes which featured:  composer Terence Blanchard, opera star Aubrey Allicock, Hudson Taylor, Athlete Ally Executive Director; Philip Deitch, TSL Athlete and St. Louis community activitist and; Greg Larocque, former GLISA-NA President. The discussion explored the legacy of LGBT athletes in America culture.

The Antwerp conference on LGBT human rights

Our world is changing, and it is changing everywhere. In the south LGBT activists have the difficult task of obtaining basic rights and recognition in front of strong homophobia: too many countries keep their distance regarding the evolution of rights for the LGBT community. However, even in the south, especially in South America, things are moving quickly and in the right direction. In the north we find a patchwork of improvement, such as in France or in the USA, mixed with terrible regression in many countries, with Russia being a prime example of this deterioration.
The worldOutgames Antwerp 2013 (WOGA) leaders have decided that at the Antwerp Conference the MIGRATION theme will also integrate into TRANSITION. Transition is an illustration of the changing picture of LGBT issues around the world.  We are certain that in Antwerp we will draft a type of 'vademecum' (or reference book) to help build more links, and thereby increase networking between our communities of LGBT activists. The Antwerp outcome on Human LGBT Rights will also reflect both southern as well as northern concerns, since we are ONE community.
The conference will be held from 31 July to 2 August at the Radisson Blu Hotel in the center of Antwerp just across from the Central Station. Mid-May the Conference Program will be launched. Visit our website from 15 May onwards, and subscribe to WOGA newsletter for more information.

Some cultural highlights during the worldOutgames

The spectacular Opening Ceremony of the Antwerp worldOutgames on Saturday 3 August will take place on the biggest open-air square of Antwerp, a great podium with a specially designed 'A' catwalk (our city logo) will host a fabulous show with international entertainment. Of course the traditional parade of the + 5000 athletes from more than 80 countries with national flags will give this opening a dazzling start.
Our Family Day for all LGBT parents and their kids will take place on the Left Bank, next to the only true city beach. Entertainment for the youngest and an urban sports initiation for teenagers will, together with a tasty BBQ, give everyone a great afternoon on Sunday 4 August.
We'll stage spectacular theatre shows during your stay in Antwerp at two of our most frequented theatres: Elckerlijc and Fakkel:
  • The Mr Gay World Grand Finale, where 25-35 delegates from around the world will compete to become the next Mr Gay World 2013, surrounded by singers and dancers in an international musical show (4 August)
  • Mask'ara will bring you the best drag show in town (7 August)
  • Eurovision @ WOGA will bring the best of the European Song Contest: come and join the very best of Eurovision by worldOutgames competitors, judged by past international Eurovision legends while putting on an amazing show. Do know that for this we are also still welcoming great talents to join us on stage (8 August)
  • Choir Gala: several choirs will be at their best in this great entertaining show (9 August)
  • No Nonsense brings four great female performers together while bringing the best of rock, pop, R&B (6, 7 August)
  • The Party is Over is a tribute to ten of the greatest female singers: 'It's better to burn out then to fade away' (8, 9 August)

Getting in shape for our sports competitions

During the worldOutgames you’ll be able to experience 32 different sports at various locations. Whether you come as an athlete or just as a visitor to watch the tournaments, our venues are well equipped to welcome you. Watching the Same-Sex Dance world championship in the beautiful Belle Époque Room at the Hilton Hotel? No problem! Cheering your favourites to victory in one of the water sports at the Olympic Wezenberg swimming pool? Be our guest! Always wanted to participate in an official AIMS Marathon? The worldOutgames might just be the right place to accomplish your aim. This and many more sports and other activities are waiting to be discovered here in Antwerp, so why hesitate? Find all the information on our website www.world.outgames.org or on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/Outgames2013 and we’ll meet this summer in Antwerp!

Accreditation at the worldOutgames

Getting to Antwerp has never been easier than now: come by train! There are direct trains from Brussels Airport (35 min) as well as from Amsterdam, Paris and London. And the good news is that our accreditation will be at our Central Station in one of its historic halls. By the way, our Central Station was voted fourth most beautiful station in the world, so what better place to get everything done once you’ve arrived in this setting?

Special GLISA NA promo

For all our GLISA NA friends we want to make a special offer. Registering for the worldOutgames involves two fees: € 129 for the worldOutgames Experience Package (Opening and Closing Ceremonies, opening party, free bus transportation, free museum pass, free fitness at different places, goodie bag with reductions, participation medal) + a fee for your sport. With the following promo code ‘GLISANA’ you will receive a € 30 discount on your worldOutgames Experience Package, so you’ll pay only € 99 instead of € 129 as long as you book before 31 May 2013. Volunteers are welcome

If you want to donate some time volunteering at the worldOutgames, we will be very grateful for this. As you can imagine, an organization like the worldOutgames can only be a success due to the many volunteers. We are recruiting in Belgium, but also abroad, and the good news is that many internationals do register to volunteer. If you come we’ll try to offer you hosted housing with some locals. Go to our website and you’ll find a link to our Pink Office, which has been specifically designed to create an efficient system for you as a volunteer. All tasks are needed, all donated time is appreciated. As our logo says: Love United!
