"Ah, my thanks, sir," said the Scarlet One, as it took the
cool glass from Winter's frosty hand. It took a small sip and
swirled the sweet wine around its mouth before swallowing it with a
broad smile. "Excellent vintage, Winter," it said. "My
compliments."

Slowly, the Scarlet One spun on its bar stool until it came to a halt
facing the window where Mariel and Verloren were speaking. It pulled
its feet up onto the seat and wrapped its arms around its knees,
holding the glass between them. It focused on the violet-eyed lady,
noted how she kept reaching at her throat, and how her eyes were one
beat away from shattering.

"This one thinks very loud," the Scarlet One said, lightly,
under its breath. It brushed a bit of its hair away from one of its
thin, pointed ears, and its jade eyes narrowed. It cocked its head
to the side. It observed Winter come around the bar and approach the
pair, and then return after his offer of refreshment was made.

And the Scarlet One watched.
