OK .... just talked to Sgt. Lilienhal of Metro. Gonna eat just a little crow
here:

Open containers are permitted on the street in the Resort Corridor (the Strip)
and also specifically on the Fremont St. Experience.

Glass containers of any kind are prohibited in those two areas for a number of
hours around midnight on Dec. 31 - Jan. 1.

Open containers are prohibited in public on public streets throughout the rest
of Clark County, and while the date was not at his fingertips, that law was
passed a number of years ago. THAT is the law that is selectively enforced.

I have asked 3 different Metro officers over the past few years about that,
and
off the record they have stated that it is not legal, but if they see someone
walking down the street with a beer minding their own business, and that
person
doesn't look suspicious, they aren't going to jam on the brakes and stop to do
anything about it.

Now that I have been taken to task, I promise in the future to check for
exemption in laws pertaining to the resort areas.

From what I have read elsewhere the R/J article is correct- it is not Cirque
du Soleil, but a group that performs a lot like them. I'm not sure about
Argentina, but it seems that I recall them being from South America so that
could be correct. At least Cirque lets you sit down- can you see a couple
hundred people in tent in Las Vegas in the heat standing up for over an
hour? This sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen........ I'm sure Ted
will have more info tomorrow for us. FYI and Thanks, Lee.

I've already been digging. The show has been compared to Cirque, thus the
mistaken identity that has been floating around. And in Norm's defense, he did
note that the show was Argentina's Cirque-like performing artists, although
phrased in a confusing way.

Tomorrow night, I'll put info in the newsletter regarding the latest estimate
on when the show opens.

Guess we aren't quite done with this thing yet:

A top political operative for Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman once suggested
breaking into the homes of key prosecution players in the Ted Binion murder
case, defense sources told the Sun.

William Cassidy, who took a leave of absence as a City Hall aide to Goodman to
work on the Binion defense team, broached the subject in defense strategy
sessions for Sandy Murphy and Rick Tabish, who were convicted of killing
Binion, the sources said

Developers are planning to build a $700-million, 52-story hotel-condominium
tower on the site of the Harley Cafe. The plan to have NO GAMING at the
complex
which will feature hotel rooms, condominiums, restaurants and entertainment.
The lack of gaming is being questioned already at such a prime resort corridor
location.

My take? People come from out of town with these wonderful ideas that work in
other states, not realizing that Las Vegas is a different beast. When (I
believe it was) Grand Casinos took over the Stratosphere, they had this
mentality from being the big fish in places like Mississippi. They shunned any
locals promotion and thought that just because they had the tower, people
would
show up in droves. Obviously, even after a last ditch effort to run the place
like Stupak had always wanted (promotions, crapless craps, etc.), they went
under.

Maybe this idea will work. Maybe people will pay for nice rooms not
attached to
a casino, but except for business travelers, people that can pay for the nicer
rooms usually fall into the "high roller" category and get them comped. Why
pay
for something you can get for free? While I'm not sure if Mandalay Bay can
comp
any rooms at Four Seasons, the Four Seasons has a casino sitting very close to
the bottom of the elevator.

I do see the condos selling well. Living right on the strip, but with a quick
way to beat the traffic (Harmon Rd) and unbelievably close proximity to
business centers and the airport, they should entice the people that can
afford
luxury housing.

We should know in a couple of years whether I am a sage or an idiot. On the
other hand, we might not: I have lost count of all the developers who blew
into
town with huge plans to construct this, that, or the other (Planet Orion,
Planet Hollywood Casino, et. al.) and never materialized.

The little bit of sketchy details on this one are available at:

I have trouble seeing this working at this location. I have stayed
at the Alexis Park before, a non-gaming property on Harmon across
from the Hard Rock Hotel (in fact, I'm staying there Sept 1 - 5) but
that's AWAY from the strip - for people who want to escape that whole
casino atmosphere. I can't see Strip customers choosing to stay at a
hotel without a casino. They just won't be able to compete. Even
the Alexis Park has considered adding a small casino. And as for the
condos, if you're an executive living in Las Vegas, do you really
want to live on the STRIP?

I think that's it. After all, gaming is gaming, isn't it? You would
think with that much money at risk, they would at least study the
game or listen to people who know the game, but maybe at that level
ego overrides.

We visited the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago. Drove out 1st day.
Stayed over in the town of Williams. Then drove back the 2nd day. It's a
pretty hefty drive as I remember (4-5 hours each way). Wouldn't want to try
and do it in one day, unless I did the bus tour.

Thru here I have gooten excellent rates with Alamo for Fullsize car.
I got a rate of 126.00 recently. I used Alamo for he first time in
many years this June. I joined the Quicksilver and it was excellent.
You get on the shuttle from the airport, walk into the facility, and
follow the quicksilver signs. You go up to one of their quicksilver
machines follow the instructions and you have a printed contract in
seconds which tells you what space the car is in. Just go to the car
and you are on your way. It really only takes a couple minutes.

I wish returning the car was as simple. We were running late and they
were very busy and I knew it would take quite a while for them to get
to me, so I left the car and went inside and told them I left the car
and had to get to the airport. Although they insisted I needed to be
with car I left. Got the bill and everything was fine.

Bill, we oriented our house so that the front faces almost due north and the
back almost due south. This results in the sun passing over the width of the
house from one side to the other as it moves through the day. It should keep us
cooler, and definitely removes the issue of the front part of the house being
hotter and then the back part being hotter (or vice versa) that we would have
had with an east-west orientation. This was part of our strategy in our original
lot selection last fall.

Been there, done that. Hate to upset all the nature lovers out
there, but you've seen one hole in the ground, you've seen them all.
I guess it's worth doing it once if you never have, but it's a LONG
drive, in my opinion. (I had somebody else who did the driving when
I went.) NOT on my list of "must-sees", when people ask.

I did like seeing it, but it reminded me of the Chevy Chase movie
where they drive across country, stop by the G.C., and he nods his
head and says, "Yup, that's the Grand Canyon. Let's go!" And off
they go to Wally World ...

Travelnow is very good, but not always the best. I use three sources. I
check our site, then compare it with Expedia.com. I usually find Expedia to
be higher (but not always). after I get those quotes, I check with Priceline.

With Priceline, you can bid on a rental car, but if you win, you are billed
immediately. Plus, Priceline adds a $5 "service charge." So, I only use
them on longer rentals and when I know for sure I will be using it. For me,
the price needs to be at least $20 total cheaper than I can get through any
other source for me to use Priceline. But, I recently, I got an
intermediate in San Francisco for $16 a day through them.

Travelnow does not require a credit card to guarantee a car reservation,
Expedia asks for one, but does not bill it. So, both of these give you a
little more flexibility than Priceline.

Boy, I've been to the Grand Canyon and love going as often as I can. I
don't think there is any other "hole" quite like the Grand Canyon, with its
stratified, colorful earth, monolithic rock structures and sheer canyon
walls. I like Sion, Bryce and other painted deserts, but the Grand Canyon
is my favorite.

One day is not enough to see it, primarily because in one day you will end
up only going where the crowds are. If you have more time, you can explore,
and visit the other areas. The North rim, while not as spectacular as the
South, is cooler and more forested. Plus, it's less crowded. The western
end is home to the Havasupai and the gorgeous Havapai Falls. There are many
places to rent horses and mules and explore, sometimes on your own.

Where the crowds are, it is hard to truly appreciate the magnitude and beauty.

I like hiking in the Canyon (although they discourage you from hiking to
the bottom and back up in one day). On hikes, I see deer and antelope,
loads of Kaibab squirrels, a huge range of flora including cactus,
succulents and desert pine. The farther down you go, the fewer people there
are and the quieter it gets. Once you reach the river, it is amazing to
look up at the staggering canyon walls.

One night, my wife and I stood at the rim and there was a lightning storm.
The entire canyon filled with bright white light, reflecting off the river,
and lighting the rocks, then it was dark again. It's something I will not
forget.

This fall I would very much like to go backpacking and stay a few days by
the river, maybe near Phantom Ranch.

I feel very strongly that a one day trip is a disservice to yourself and
the canyon. And, I also disagree strongly that it's like any other hole in
the ground.

Hi Mickey,

I have been to the Grand Canyon maybe a dozen times, but not in the last ten
years. It is a great place, especially the first few times. As Matt says,
it is better to go for more than one day, especially if your drive takes up
half your day already. Only once did I visit the canyon from Vegas, I took
my girlfriend had her two boys on one of those plane rides. It was
spectacular from the air, the kids loved it and I got some great photos.
However, it was not part of the national park, it was Indian lands, something
about no longer being able to actually fly over the park. It was a great
little trip, we saw lots that we would not have been able to see otherwise,
and we were back in Vegas if a couple of hours. Was it worth the $400 for
the four of us? Yes! It was something that only took a couple of hours to
do, the cost compares to some Vegas' shows, plus it was someplace the other
three had never seen and will remember for as long as they live.

On the subject of retal cars:

Myself and my wife and the couple we travel with were in Vegas Feb of
this year. My friend and myself usually try to get out of Vegas for a day
trip and our wife's very rarely go. They will not leave town for some reason.

So this year we decided to drive over to Utah to Zion National Park. The day
before we planned to go, my buddy said let's rent a Corvette. I thought this
was a great idea. We were staying at the Flamingo. My friend is a runner
and in the morning he told me he ran past a car rental agency that had
exotic cars. We called and the rental for a Corvette for a day with mileage to
Zion and back was between $400 and $500. A little too steep. We ended up
renting a Chrysler Status for the day for about $35.

Anyone ever rent a Corvette or an exotic car in Vegas???

Sincerely,
Tom
