In the fall of 2003 several American citizens living on Cape Cod began to meet as a group [originally titled CREAD], fearing that the fundamental tenets of American Democracy were rapidly being eroded by the current group in control of the U.S. government. We saw conscious, continuing, and effective efforts from the highest political leadership in this land to dismantle those liberal policies which brought the U.S. to a position of prominence in the world, and which created a thriving society in which there was increasingly more equality of opportunity. These policies were created and strengthened by US presidents from FDR through Bill Clinton. Those presidents used government to try to foster a fairer distribution of power, wealth, and opportunity in this country. Now, their policies are being dismantled by a group of right-wing radicals who, having gained ascendancy in the White House are, with the active cooperation of US Congressional leadership, destroying the ability of the government to help the powerless. They are reorienting the government to redistribute income, wealth and opportunity away from the majority of the people in our society to the already wealthy and powerful minority. They seem intent on the destruction of American public education, the Social Security system, Medicare and much, much more. It is our intention to do whatever we can to reverse these disastrous trends.
