All,

Just a reminder. Registration is due next week for the Boykin's Tavern 1812
event Oct. 6-7. If you plan on attending please get these in as we need the
info for final planning for things like straw, wood, porta-johns, the dinner
and dance on Satruday night, etc.

The registration form can be obtained by going to our web site
www.virginiastatenavy.com <http://www.virginiastatenavy.com/> and clicking
on the picture of the tavern at the bottom of the home page. We will also be
at North Point this weekend, so that would be a good place to get them to me
if you are there. I will have info packets on me as well for the event.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Bob:
The Canadian price is $45, which for an 800 page book (almost) is not
bad.
I ordered it through my local bookstore, which is not part of a chain.
I believe it is available through most of the large chains now.

All,

Wanted to express our thanks to all the organizers and reenactors at
yesterday's Battle of Northpoint event. Being first timers to this event,
and introducing a new impression (20th U.S.), we were all very happy we
decided to attend. The weather was beautiful, the site was great, the
reenactors all looked good and I was impressed with the numbers in
attendance, and wow! What a great amount of public in attendance as well!

I was able to visit several units, get involved in interesting
conversations, learn a lot about them, and picked up some great tips on how
to make our impression better and more accurate.

I must say it was a great event for us to drive up to, and plan on doing it
again next year, this time with more members coming along after they hear
what a neat event they missed.

So, once again, thanks so much for great day!

Thanks to Ann Wass and her co-conspirators for hosting such a wonderful
event! The weather was perfect, and it's always fun to shoot at friends
you've just met as well as friends you haven't seen for a while. Being
the sole member of Ship's Company to bring a musket, I was pressed into
the RN and helped shoot up the garden at Riversdale Mansion. Thanks to
Diane Pry for taking pix of the Tactical.

Many cheers to the folks in the Dependency who demonstrated period style
cookery all day. We thoroughly enjoyed the fruits (and veggies and
meats) of their labor at supper.

On behalf of On-gwe-ho-way Native Reenactment Group, we'd like to
thank Gayle and Richard, Chris and staff of the Fairfield Museum for
a wonderful weekend event.

We were welcomed with open arms, treated royally to sumptous meals,
and enjoyed a true sense of reenactment community. The battles were
well orchestrated thanks to the British and American Regulars, the
Militia and the Kentuckians and the Provincial Marine Canon Crew who
made it so realistic. From the comments from the public, they sure
enjoyed it.

Was Moraviantown the site of a major battle of the War of 1812? No,
not by a long run. But the horrors of the attack and decimation of
these peaceful peoples depicted the travesty and horrors of war and
we appreciate the opportunity to pay honour to the memory of those
who perished at Moraviantown.

Looking forward to next Labour Day Weekend when once
again, "Fairfield Comes Alive".....BE THERE!!

I am sure that Mr. Williams will have considerably more detail (and sage
advice) to offer, as he is FAR more experienced with this sort of thing
than am I, but, FWIW, we were both there, and we asked an organizer
exactly what had happened. The gentleman in question was not using a
traditional cartridge pouch of any sort, but instead something more
along the lines of a possibles bag, with the flap stitched to the
strap. He was an experienced re-enactor -- leading one also to the
caveat that "familiarity breeds contempt."

If I understood the discussion correctly, it was deemed far more likely
that there was loose powder in the bag, and that that was what had
ignited, rather than a spark burning through pre-rolled cartridges. Mr.
Williams?

I have little to add to the notes that Susan has forwarded.
It is a case of using a "possibles" or "hunting" bag for a purpose it
wasn't designed for, carrying cartridges.
Fortunately, there is plenty of evidence of native warriors carrying
cartridge boxes during the 1812 War so it shouldn't be a problem for
us. These fellows, who have excellent impressions usually do Rev War
and I won't speak to what they are used to there, but as Susan
pointed out we were told that the unfortunate chap had sewn the flap
to the strap, perhaps to ease in retrieving rounds, exposing himself
unnecessarily ?
I hope to hear more details later. The main thing here is that we
keep a good thought for Ralph and hope for a speedy recovery.
We started a collection to help defray the cost for him. I don't
imagine a Helicopter ride to the hospital is cheap.

I sent her an email last week and never heard anything back. The old
contact is still up. John Sek was supposed to be changing the same
and, though he emailed that this was to be changed over the weekend,
it's the same situation. Someone tell Betsy she's got email.

Ted

There was a holiday weekend and some events during that time

so she may have been away

Also, some people do not read their email every day

  Some take weeks to respond

She does not get paid to maintain the website so speed may not be
an issue

On the other hand some units go for years with the wrong info
never informing the webpage of the correct info

couldn't resist) but he doesn't want to miss anything

Beck,

We are just working on that and I will post it here tomorrow in
detail. I just want to make sure the village is good with what we have
listed. We are having a meeting tomorrow around 4 and it is on the
agenda. I'll try to post it then with other details which have been
worked out. It will also be added to the event website;
http://fanshawe1812.tripod.com

The village opens at 10am each day and closes at 4:30. Each day there
are quite a few things listed for the public to take in and there are
2 battles each day. The main tactical is at 3 pm on Saturday.

More tomorrow.

James ,
I am referencing the book Red Coat Brown Bess . Mr anthony Darling ,Canadian
Cataloging in Publication Data . Covers the Brown Bess from its inseption ,
Their is no Carbine in his athoratative works . It is not until 1793 that we see
the India Pattern Musket , which is the shortest British approved Pattern , of
the three basic Muskets Long land Short land and India pattern . With all the
lock trumpet pipe and other small deviations , no Carbine .ISBN0919316123 PA
HISTORICAL ARMS SERIES NO 12 . I believe this is a good book and have relied on
it heavily when brown bess conversations come up , he Mr Darling sticks right to
the detail of the orders of the tower and ordinance department . A very
informative work .
I hope this helps the question . If I can look for particular year information
to post please ask and ill quote page no # and years , from the work .

James ,
Reading in Mr Darlings works , their are references to Carbines used by Hussars
and Calvalry however these were carbines other than Brown Bess and were 65
caliber . By the 1747 the calvalry was having their Carbines taken away and
replaced by the Bess musket , That is what the ordinance board ordered .
Their is reference to Highlanders being armed with Carbines however this was the
42 inch barreled Bess rather than the 46 inch barreled bess . so still short and
long land pattern . Why they thought the 42 inch barreled gun was a carbine is
beyond me . Thus stated The newly established light infantry carried carbines
with 42 inch barrel 1760 .page 23
However the short land pattern is a 42 in barrel musket , so if you want to call
that a carbine ?
The new land service is also a 42 inch barrel , so why they call the highland
regiment muskets carbines ? They had 42 inch barrels . I am still not comming up
with a bess carbine .
Again Hope this helps . referencing Red coat Brown Bess .

Hi Dan

Thai topic was somewhat explored before with a discuss of the
meaning of the term "fusil" on an inspection return for the 41st
Regiment. The following was referenced as a possible explanation:

http://www.therifleshoppe.com/(788).htm

  1807 Sergeant's Carbine

This carbine was made especially for NCO's who needed a lighter,
shorter weapon. Except for smaller dimension it is very similar to
the India Pattern Musket. This weapon is the same as the India
Pattern Artillery Carbine which has a 39" barrel compared to the 37"
barrel on this gun in .66 caliber. The lock plate measures 6 1/8" x
1 1/6". The throw of the cock is 1 11/16".

A number of years ago I was looking at lists of stores in the arsenal at
Quebec.?? There were a number of "Black Muskets" in stores just before the war.?
These later morphed into carbines and later?became India Pattern muskets.?? This
all makes sense if the norm for the Canadas was still Short Land Pattern.? The
India Pattern, originally for arming the East India Company army, could be
referred to as a "Black Musket" not because of its colour but in reference to
those expected to shoulder them.? The reference to carbine makes sense given the
shorter barrel (39" vs 42").? However, whether or not these were ever issued to
anyone other than Provincials or Militia escapes my memory.

The Inspection Return for the 41st on Oct 11, 1809 indicates that there were no
fusils issued to the regiment and that four were "wanting."? They were still
"wanting" in the return of June 1810 but had been received by the time of the
May 1811 return.? The 10th Royal Veterans showed that none were issued and none
wanting in that regiment.

In a?Return of Small Arms etc?at Fort George in June, 1812, ?the following are
of interest:?

1553 English Musquets
1030 French Musquets
16, 738 Flints Musquets
60,000 English Musquet cartridge and ball
140,000 French Musquet cartridge and ball
666 Carbine Musquet cartridge and ball
11.10 lbs of Dutch thread
10.0 ditto of twine
2, 140 Paper dozen sheets
64, 200 English lead musquet balls

French muskets are .69 calibre.? Obviously the carbine cartridges contain a ball
that is neither .69 nor .75 calibre.?? No pistol balls are listed.

Ron
