In this chapter of Fujieda Miyabi's The Caged Miko and the Whimsical
Witch, Letty decides to connect herself and Tsumugi with a red thread,
in case they get separated. Little does she know that the red thread has
another meaning in Japan...

The Tagalog dub of Marimite was getting good, but it only made it to

away with saying that the show was about friendship (pag-kakaibigan), rather than love (pag-iibigan), in their promo.

--> Oh, I thought it ended much sooner. My friends and I didn't sense it lasted for as long as 9 episodes. >_>0 ABS-CBN really shouldn't have bothered to dub it, at least not for the mainstream audience watching their local syndicated channel, ABS-CBN 2. (We're all still debating whether or not Marimite would've done better in ABS-CBN's straight-to-cable anime-only channel, though. I'd like to know your input on the subject if you don't mind. v^_^v)

One show I'd like to hear dubbed in English is The Twins at St Clare's,
but only if it was done in the UK, though I probably wouldn't be able to
tell the difference if it was done in Australia or New Zealand.

--> Actually, there'd be a big difference in accents for all the VAs of these countries if none of the VAs decide to adopt an American accent.

--> As for myself, personally, I'd still rather see the Tagalog dubs if official language dubs must be done in our country. Some of them retain the nuances of the Japanese language in comparison to the American English dubs. ^_^

HERO would've been better venue. Fewer restrictions on cable TV,
probably at least one same-day replay, and it's not like the show had
mass-market appeal like Inu-Yasha (which was the lead-in show). Looking
back, it didn't seem like they did much promotion on channel 2, though
people on their message boards were aware of it in advance.

St Clare's is set in the UK. I forget if any of the girls are American.

It's weird that the show's been dubbed in lots of languages but not
English (judging by Anime News Network's encyclopedia, in addition to my
watching the Tagalog and Chinese dubs), when the original books were
written in English. You'd think there'd be some market. Then again
that seems to be the case for most anime based on English-language
children's books.

Setting the iPod on shuffle as usual, and what comes up halfway
through the drive home? "Follow Your Dreams".

Ah, the fond memories of Project A-Ko. A mindless fun action comedy
that had a great cast of characters and all the unapologetic yuri your
goggles could provide.

Not to mention one of the 80's best Evil Psychotic Lesbians: B-Ko.
Hey, actually wanting to spend *more* time on this planet around C-Ko
automatically wins you the Psychotic part of that mantle. Evil? Pity
the poor schools and innocent tanks that were not spared her
destructive wrath. Lesbian? The moment you first see B-Ko in the
movie, she's giving the Come Hither gaze to C-Ko... with bonus theme
music. "Looking in your eyes..." ^__^

Throw in the proudful willingness to wear ridiculously skimpy battle
gear ("I don't CARE what people think, my BattleSuit looks awesome!")
and kickass weapons wreaking wanton destruction, and you get a
Character I wuv *SO* much. Oh, and smart enough to design FREAKIN
MECHA BIG STOMPY ROBOT GOODNESS for her galpals? Oh yeah.

All done with that "I'm richer and better than you" perfect form.
Take that, Sachiko!

Meanwhile the hero of the story is a rowdy schoolgirl who superpunches
the bad guys, gets the girl and saves the day. Cue credits and
"Follow Your Dreams".

How is this not the best movie ever?

(Don't forget the fanservice! Bum shots and bath scene! It's a movie
starring schoolgirls, remember? As for the boys swimsuits... ehhhhhhhh.)

Such a sudden burst of nostalgia. I've been grinning like an idiot
all day. It really was a great show, and at the time I was young
enough for it to leave the BEST impression. Name another kids movie
where the girl hero gets to pick up a bigass sword and go BAM BAM BAM
against the bad guy.

Project A-Ko rocks. I am So scheduling movie night this week.

P.S. The first sequel OVA episode was fine. The two after that?

Let's not forget that Emi SHINOHARA played Biko "B-Ko" Daitokuji and Miki ITOU
played Eiko "A-Ko" Magami. They were later reunited as Youko Mizuno and
Sachiko Ogasawara on a show called Maria-sama ga Miteru. Sachiko was Youko's
petite soeur so I wonder if they ever had out takes where Youko "corrects" her
petite soeur in Biko's bullying voice?

The cover, still by Hibiki Reine was sort of strange, probabaly
because it's just Chika, without any company, but if you look
carefully, she's holding a Valentine's Day card and chocolates
addressed to Haruna. :-)

Looks like the usual gang; new Strawberry Shake Sweet, new Ameriro
Koucha Kandan and new Eiki Eiki and Zaou Taishi to look forward to!

Remember, if you've been enjoying the scans by the great folks at
Lililicious, don't forget to support the actual artists and publisher
by getting the actual magazine, because scans don't pay bills.

Hi all -

Yesterday I reviewed the new Seven Seas release of Kashimashi Girl
Meets Girl on Okazu: http://okazu.blogspot.com

I know that not everyone here reads Okazu, so let me just give you
guys the short version - I think this is the best adaptation of a
manga into English for a wide-scale release, that I have ever seen.

The story is quite stupid, but as long as you don't judge it
logically, or with any expectation of it making sense, it's a fun,
brain-cell killing read. :-)

It's also the only manga I've ever seen other than ALC manga, that
maintains the honorifics exactly as they appear in the original. As a
result, again other than our manga, this is the closest to reading
the original version you can get in English.

This morning in my email, I found a note from Seven Seas, thanking me
for the review. They said the check is in the mail. LOL

Here's the direct link to Kashimashi on Amazon: <http://

Here's why. I have never seen Project A-ko. :-)

Isn't that awful? CPM gave me the box set in 2003 and I used it as a
contest prize. LOL

This is because, in the dawn of time, MTV was carrying extremely late
night anime as was, I believe Sci-Fi for a while. They were dubbed,
and mostly old-school. This was long enough ago now that the current
anime/manga boom could not have even been predicted as a possiblity.

I was working three jobs. A full-time day job, teach martial arts at
night, and on the weekends, selling swords at a RenFaire. I'd get
home Saturday night at about midnight and be completely fried. The
wife was working two jobs (day job, and doing henna in Soho in NYC on
the weekends) and while waiting for her to come home, I'd stare at TV.

I saw "Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer" which was so screwed up, it
put me off the series for years, until I watched some of the TV
series for review purposes years later, which put me off it forever.

And I saw one teeny, tiny, wee bit of "Project A-ko." The (dub)
voices sliced through my exhausted nerve endings, leaving me shaking.
I turned off the TV and never again even tried to watch A-ko.

I *suppose* I really ought to. I mean, history, and all that. But the
dub left such an unpleasant impression, that I've just sort of
skirted the issue all these years.

So - what do you all think? Should I watch it? Or hey, maybe someone
else wants to review it for Okazu! Apply here with your first line of
a potential review. :-)

(Contest!!)

Cheers,

Erica

Project A-Ko was originally going to be part of Cream Lemon. The
Graviton City fansite has scans of the artbook for that version.

I've only seen part 2 dubbed and the last two subtitled. I think I
would've liked part 2 better if they'd kept the dub cast from the movie.

Heya all. I'm Sukoshi, if you don't remember me, and I don't post too often ^^;. Well, I'm using my limited Japanese ability to start translation on the second Marimite novel Kibara Kakumei. Ideally (which means most of the time), I'm going to be updating daily around 8:00 - 9:00 PM PST (0:00 - 1:00 GMT). So without further ado, http://www.anysize.org/~sukoshi/Marimitenovel2/ is the address for the HTML version and http://www.anysize.org/~sukoshi/Marimitenovel2.pdf for the PDF version. http://www.anysize.org/~sukoshi/Kibarakakumei-darcs is the address for the darcs repository, which contains the TeX file, the HTML and PDF file generated from the TeX file (which is the same thing as the above links), and the vocabulary notes (similar to the Saiconk ones) I'm ongoing through my progress. If you're not familliar with darcs, it's a system to control projects where you often update files (and I hope I can update my files everyday). Don't be hesitant to point out errors in the translation via email. I hope you all enjoy ^^

Well, I've watched all of Sailor Moon, and all (so far available) of Maria-sama. Kekko Kamen is a hoot. And when I ordered the Project A-ko Complete Set from Right Stuf, they put it on back-order. But the price was right.

Also got the first DVD of Wedding Peach, out of curiosity. It seems to be every bit as bad as I'd feared, but the price was right ...

Ah, Project A-Ko....I remember renting this title at
the long defunct West Coast Video out of curiosity. It
was subtitled and got hooked on anime because of this!
It was back in the early 90's. I later bought Project
A-ko 5 years later, but the dubbed version. A year or
two later, I purchased the CD soundtrack for a friend
of mine and she can't get enough of it! She would even
play it at a club she worked at that time.

I am realllllly feeling nostalgic.

I'm reading a copy of the first volume of "Murder Princess", a manga
I picked up entirely for the title at the Book-Off in Harajuku.

The inside cover reads, in English - "King Forland was assasinated in
the coup d'etat. To defend his country, the rest of the people had no
choice...but to leave their fate to the strongest and evillest
princess..."

So of course I love it. :-)

An OAV is due out in March and it has one of the single highest yuri
potential I've ever seen. Every one of the female characters is being
voiced by a high-level six degrees of yuri seiyuu (Paku Romi,
Toyoguchi Megumi, Koshimizu Ami, Saito Chiwa). The animation is by
Bee Train and the manga...a Dengeki Comic.

I haven't gotten far along in the manga, but I'm keeping my fingers
crossed. With such a high YP rating, it would be so sad if there was
*nothing.*

Cheers,

Erica

Yup, that's right, more heads-up info from your friends
of the Yuri ML. ^^ These are some of the manga and anime
we have been talking about lately, that I couldn't but
notice nobody has mentioned here yet.

1) Venus Versus Virus: A new TV anime season has just started, and
there are four new series with potential! VVV is the most interesting.
It has been compared with Noir. The story follows the two heroines,
cool goth girl Lucia and naive high-school girl Sumire, who hunt and
kill "virus" demons (supernatural icky monsters). It's very dark and
violent, and there are tons of yuri hints and potential!

2) Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight: Another show in the new TV anime
season. If you are into Ichigo Mashimaro, you will like this: it's the
same kind of setting & humor, and the heroine is very much like
Miu-chan! ^^ In her first day at her new school, she manages to do a
lot: she turns the whole campus upside down, gets elected as
seitokaichou, and wins the heart of her cutie classmate Mikan! Quite
the accomplishment! ^^

3) Saint October: Another show in the new TV anime season. The
heroines are very young girls (let's just say "lolis") who work for a
detective agency and use the magical powers of Tarot cards to go after
baddies. And they really give strong yuri vibes, too! They are totally
adorable. ^^ (In the first episode, they catch a shotacon guy in a
Tuxedo Kamen costume who was kidnapping lots of cute chibi boys, hehe.
And they adopt one of the kids as their child. *^^*)

4) Hidamari Sketch: Fourth show with yuri interest in the new TV anime
season. Another all-girls anime, based in a 4-koma manga; it seems the
authors are trying to follow the Azumanga Daioh recipe, complete with
yuri subtext. ^^ Let's hope they succeed!

5) Now for a manga: Battle Club by Yuji Shiozaki, author of
Ikkitousen/Battle Vixens. It's been commercially released in English.
This is pure mindless service for boys without a shred of story or
character development, just lots of big-boobed schoolgirls fighting
martial arts battles for no reason and lusting after one another. ^^;;
It IS quite yuri, undoubtly, in its own mindless servicey way...

6) Mai Oriru Hana: another manga, really cute and innocent story about
schoolgirls doing ballet. It's a oneshot, it's scanlated and it can be
found in IRC manga channels. The heroine has the biggest crush ever on
her sempai, the star ballerina of the ballet club, and... nothing
explicit happens, but... she does succeeds at making that girl take
her seriously in the end... ^^

That's all for now! Bye bye,

White Rose

Unless this is totally different than the manga, theis won't have any yuri
(unless you turn Yuri goggles on full) and squint hard. LOL

I've been reading the manga for years and it's one of those "wackiness
ensues" type stories.

Company Executive: "So, thanks for coming to today's meeting. We're
here to discuss the newest work by 'Kaishaku.'" (everyone laughs
politely) "Ahem. As you know, we've had a string of sucesses and we
want to keep up the good work."

Kaishaku (writer): "Well, yes, we've been thinking about that - and we
have a great new, original idea that we want to..."

Company Executive: "Whoa, whoa, hold on there. It's great that you've
got these 'original' ideas, but you know we want another successful
series."

Kaishaku (artist): "Right, that's what we were thinking, so we've come
up with some fabulous new character designs..."

Company Executive: "Well, I don't think you're taking my meaning here,
exactly. The series that you did a few years ago - the one with the
mikos - that was awfully popular. Can't you do something similar?"

Company Exec 2: "Yes, we've been discussing it and we've decided that
the best course of action is to use similar...well, that is to say,
the same character designs...and put them in a similar...by which we
mean *very* similar situation."

Kaishaku (artist and writer): "Fine. Got it. You want us to use the
same names?"

Company Executives: (laugh)

Company Executive: "Heavens, no! This is your story, after all - we
wouldn't want to get in the way of the creative process. By all means,
choose any names you want."

***

Kyoshiro to Towa no Sora is, as I like to think of it, a "cod-liver
oil" anime. It got bad taste, and is kind of nasty, but we'll get used
to it and in the end, convince ourselves that it was "good." LOL

The main plot is totally straight. When it actually develops. At the
moment there's just a passive blonde and a hunky princeling and giant
fightin' robots. Perhaps we will eventually learn what's going on.

Chikane and Himeko, as mentioned several times here, are reincarnated
as Kaon and Himiko. They have a storyline of their own, but we'll have
to watch the rest of the anime to follow it. Yuri love is requited
this time, but still not without angst. :-)

Personally, I'm just waiting on the appearnce of Waltesia, who is to
be voiced by Ogata Megumi. Whoo-hoo!

Cheers,

Erica

I bet my eye teeth* that there'll be people on the net who'll think this
is the best thing since sliced orochi.

Me, I'm here wondering if maybe clumsy, happy, friendly goofy girls for
main characters have gone the way of the dodo and we'll be getting lots
of moelicious otaku-bait for aeons...

Since we seem to be talking about new/current series with yuri and yuri hints, I though I'd mention one with a bit of canon yuri. :)

'Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion' is an alternate universe world where the world is basically broken up into the Britannian Empire, the European Union, and China. Britannia has taken over Japan, which is now referred as 'Area Eleven' and the Japanese people as 'Elevens.'

From the beginning of the series, I'd been cheering on the subtext between the main character Lelouch and his childhood friend, Suzaku (son of the former Japanese Prime Minister and honorary citizen of the Empire). Unfortunately that seems to have been pushed aside in favor of the obligatory het pairing for Suzaku. :( That aside, I'll get to the yuri now.

In an early episode, there was some very sweet subtext between Millay, the president of the Student Council at Lelouch's boarding school, and Nina, the shy secretary of the Student Council. A couple episodes later, Nina started developing a crush on Princess Euphemia.

As cute as her crush is, the writers did -not- handle the crush well. Nina was shown masturbating to a picture of Euphemia, clearly a case of fanservice in bad taste, as the writers have never before and never since gone -anywhere- as far in showing the canon het couplings.

That aside, I'm glad that Nina is canonically a lesbian now (or at least has tendencies). As Nina will never have a relationship with Euphemia (Euphemia being both the princess and the second half of Suzaku's obligatory het pairing), I'm hopeful the writers might redeem themselves a bit for their bad taste and have Millay and Nina together.

If anyone is interested the series, it's being subbed by GG Fansubs at ggkthx.org

There's already some fan pairings of Millay and Shirley, as well, although
Shirley is the obligatory love interest of the lead, Lelouch. It would be
sort of nice to see Millay and Nina get together, although it would be a bit
pathetic too. "Can't love the one I want, I'll love the one I'm with" sort
of thing.

I was kind of surprised at Nina coming from behind the pack there - in the
beginning, they set Millay up as the probable unrequited lesbian, and then
the thing with Euffie happened, and it was a bit "buh?"

Did anyone else notice that CLAMP is credited for Suzaku's character design?
Ya think? LOL He's a total Syaoran clone.

Aside from everything yuri or not, I think CG has been an interesting series
to date, and I'm just hoping Sunrise/Gonzo have an actual end in mind. :-)
I'd definitely recommend it as something to watch - just not as something
yuri to watch.

Cheers,

Erica
