Hello Everyone:

Just wanted to remind you that starting tonight we have a change in the
Tuesday night dance schedule at The Amber House in Warren, MI. From 7:30 to
8:30 will be Intermediate East Coast Swing and from 8:30 to 9:30 will be
Beginning Carolina Shag.

Following in the footsteps (hee hee!) of the Carolina Shag workshop recently
with Mike and Inge Evans, we will be reviewing over some of the basics they
taught in the beginner class. From there, I want to show some fun
variations on the basics that Mike and Inge did not cover in the workshop to
keep things exciting and fresh.

Also, don't forget this weekend is an incredible weekend of dance in the
Michigan area:

Friday, April 6 - Dance Fanatics presents "Funky Friday" at Studio 110 in
Clio, MI

Saturday, April 7 - Mike Wagner has a spin technique workshop at Diamonback
Saloon in Belleville, MI

Sunday, April 8 - Barry Douglas workshop at The Amber House in Warren, MI in
Hustle, West Coast Swing, and Salsa along with a pot luck dance.

If you can, don't miss these events. I may be out of town this weekend for
the Parker Dearborn West Coast Swing workshop in Ithaca, NY but if I'm not I
will definitely see you at these events.

Take care,

Tim Constant

Hello everyone! I just wanted to send out this e-mail to get people
thinking about the swing scene in Ann Arbor and how we can save it. sigh.
As most of you know, I am graduating this month and leaving the country
for awhile. OK, 2.5 years is more than awhile I guess. Anyway, I need
each and every one of you to take it upon yourselves to see that swing
lives in the Union (and anywhere else you can think of!)

I just got out of a little meeting with Robb from the Union programming
office and he is hesitant to run swing this summer, and also thinking of
alternating it with latin in the fall. We are meeting again next week to
discuss in more detail, but I was hoping that you all could help me out in
the meantime. Please e-mail me suggestions as to how we can make
Wednesday night swing in the Union more successful and keep it alive!

Thanks!
Kate

Subject: OC DANCERS IN DIRE NEED!!!! YOU CAN HELP!!!!
Date: Tue, Apr 3, 2001, 11:16 PM

I apologize for the long email, but this is really important news for us
SoCal-er's.  If I sound a bit panicked, it's because I am.  :)

If I have spoken to you about this already, go ahead and ignore me, I tried
to Instant Message as many people as I could, personally...

We have a bit of a predicament down here in lovely Southern California.  Our

"home away from home" Memories, is at risk of being torn down and turned
into
an El Pollo Loco (fast food chain restaurant), and a Starbucks (you all know

what that is).  I will attach the email that was sent to me, but I figured
that since all of you had been there before, I could ask you to help us out.

It seems that the more interest the city see's from OUT-OF-TOWNERS, the more

valuable the venue is to the city.  For the most part, all of you, fit under

that category of "out-of-towner."

Memories is one of the only remaining venues for swing in Orange County, and

it's a pity that the reason it's at risk of being shut down is because of
outside, non-dance related issues.  It's one thing if they want to close it
for LACK of clientele or something, but that has nothing to do with it.

Memories has also been such a GREAT place for dancers (young and old), to
come and enjoy ALL types of dance, and to (excuse the cheesy word) but
really
flourish.  Memories has really helped SO many of us Southern California
dancers to become the dancers we are today.  It really is a home away from
home for so many of us, it would be a tragedy if we lost it!  Memories is
also more than just a place to become a better dancer.  Many of our most
wonderful times have happened there. We have made many friends and have had,

to put it rather bluntly, made our most treasured memories.  If you have
ever
felt the magic that's in this club, please help us.

Please help us ... help us save Memories!

If you attended the exchange you know what an amazing place it is!

Please help ... if you have the time please write us back and either send it

to myself (JennSalvadori@...) or Mo, at (modanz@...) .  You can also

call the Anaheim City Council at (714) 765-5247.  Or write them personally
at

                                      Anaheim City Hall
                                      200 S. Anaheim Blvd.
                                      Anaheim, CA 92805
Don't forget to mention that you're from OUT-OF-TOWN, and say where you're
from.

The following is the email I received...

_________________________________________________________________

Dear friends of Memories-

I know everyone is concerned about the future of Memories.  I am writing
this
letter to address those concerns and tell you everything that is happening
so
you will be completely informed.  There are plenty of rumors going around.
 Here are the facts:

The City of Anaheim posted a notice outside our door that they are having a
public hearing to discuss tearing this building down and building two fast
food restaurants in its place.

A City Planner confided in me that he thought the odds of the rezoning going

through was about 50/50.  There are several aspects that they are agonizing
with.  The first is the traffic.  There is a tremendous amount of traffic on

Tustin Avenue during the day.  With the traffic light at La Palma, it is
sometimes almost impossible  to make the right turn out of Memories onto
Tustin.  And if you are going Southbound on Tustin, it is equally tough to
make the left hand turn into Memories.  There is really not good access into

and out of the lot that Memories is on, to accommodate the flow of traffic
that another El Pollo Loco and another Starbucks might create during the
day.

Plus, they like the building that Memories is in.  The last thing they want
to see is another landmark be torn down and another fast food restaurant go
up.  Although the building is a great example of early California
architecture, it is not located in a historical district.  There was mention

of moving the building to another location, but even I don't know if that
makes any sense. Even though the City loves the building, they are not in
the
habit of buying buildings just because they like them.  They are very
pro-business owner and if the owner wants to tear down a building, they have

every right to.

Plus, the City is somewhat aware of Memories.  They know we do dancing but
that is about it.  We have no police record to speak of-pertaining to fights

or public drunkenness  But they are not aware of the loyalty everyone has to

Memories, how everyone has embraced Memories in their heart, and how many
people call Memories "home."

But the City is also very forward-looking.  What if dancing dies and
Memories
goes under 3 years from now and the building sits vacant, while they could
have pre-empted that by rezoning it now?

Ultimately it is the owner's right to do whatever they want to make the most

amount of money.  Obviously the land is more valuable with two fast food
restaurants rather than one sit-down restaurant.

Many people have asked me why I don't just buy the building.  It is for
exactly the reason I just stated immediately above.  The owners are asking
fast food prices for the property, when it is really still only zoned to be
a
sit-down restaurant.  If I bought the property at those high prices and if I

ever needed to sell the property, I could never get what was paid for it.
However, if the zoning does not go through, perhaps the price would be
lowered and I could buy it.

The City said they would assist me in finding a new location if indeed we do

have to move.  And it is my intention to move if I have to.  So don't worry.

I do want to keep Memories alive.  And I know that I have to recreate the
same atmosphere or even make it better.

All the interior of Memories I already own, including dance floor, sound
system, lighting, seating, and not to mention foosball table (I still have a

sense of humor!).  So many things would be exactly the same, so you would
immediately be somewhat comfortable in a new place.  But we may be able to
stay where we are if the zoning does not get changed.

And if we do have to move, we still have plenty of time to enjoy Memories as

we know it.  The plans would still have to go through the bureaucracy of the

City of Anaheim.  I am told that there are still some revisions to be made
on
the plans.  Then the property would go into escrow and per our lease, we
have
to be given 60 days notice.  The owners of the property still tell me that
this could take quite a while.  And I will keep you informed along the way.
 In the meantime....

I invite you to come to the meeting and speak to any or all of the several
points I outlined above.

The meeting will be in the Council Chamber at City Hall, 200 South Anaheim
Boulevard, Anaheim on Monday, April 9 at 1:30 pm.  The plans are available
for review at 11am.

If you cannot be there, you are welcome to send a letter stating your
thoughts on the matter.  Mo is creating a grass roots effort to organize
everyone to go to the meeting or he will read your letters there.  Please
send your emails to him at modanz@....  Please copy them to me so I can
see your sentiments.

It is important for me to stay neutral at the meeting.  Though I will speak,

my words will be tainted by the fact that I am the businessowner and have
much to lose if the building is torn down.  But your words and letters may
carry much more clout, with no financial ramifications, just the chance of
losing a place where everyone loves to dance.  I await your responses.

I hope to see you soon at Memories.

jc

Greetings to all,

Great news about the Montreal International Swing Dance Festival,
Due to popular demand, we have opened up a second track 4. This means
that there are more available slots at this level, just as there are a
few extra places in the other levels as well.
Opening track 4b has not only created new spots but also the need to
welcome another teacher who will be none other than Sylvia Sykes with a
partner that will be announced shortly.

Please drop by our website if you do not know yet what the fuss about
www.swingcamp.ca, and come join us for the first Canadian lindy hop camp
that will be held during Montreal's International Jazz Festival.

Hey friends,

as most of you know, I won't be around this weekend as I'll be in
Vegas. I had asked Josh and Ian to take over Sunday night at the Elbow
Room for me but I've just been informed that the owner has booked a band
(well, actually, two bands) to perform this Sunday. It completely took me
by suprise but at least it's two COOL bands! This Sunday, April 14th
(EASTER!) Detroit's TWISTIN TARANTULAS and Ann Arbor's WIDOW MAKERS will
be on stage and rockin' Ypsi. It should prove to be a fun and memorable
night so I hope that many of you will make it out for the show.

Please, remember, this Sunday, April 14th's Swing-A-Billy Sundays has been
postponed until the following week. I'll be back with a whole bunch more
CDs and wild stories to tell but have fun with the TWISTIN' TARANTULAS and
THE WIDOW MAKERS this Sunday!

Thanks!

Hey friends,

due to some very last minute changes, my replacement DJ won't be
DJing for me tonight. He had a last minute family thing to attend to
so....anyways, I'm leaving for Vegas tonight directly after my radio show
and haven't been able to secure a second replacement. In order for the
night to continue uninterrupted, I'm asking everyone to PLEASE bring a few
of their favorite discs to the Union and put them in the 5 disc CD player.
I'll drop off a batch of CDs at the Union directly after my radio show,
but I'm asking for everyone's help in keeping the music flowing tonight.

Many thanks in advance for your assistance,

Well, I know everyone who went to the SPRINGFLINGSWINGTHING II had a great
time. Now it's time to have some more FUN!!!

Columbus is the place, the date is April 27th-29th, and it's all about
dancin'!!!!

Now, here's the update on the Workshop: CAROLINA SHAG INCLUDED!!!
People have been askin' more and more about Carolina Shag and why it's not
being taught or why it's barely known in the midwest.....well, that's why.
We're in the Midwest. So, now included in the workshop a Carolina Shag
class for anyone of any level of dancing. This will be a blast since it's
being taught as the first class on Sunday...we're all going to be recovering
from all the dancing on Friday and Saturday nite...this will be an easy
class to deal with on a Sunday Morning.

Don't worry, Speed up/Slow down will be included with the intermediate lindy
hop class....LOTS TO LEARN HERE, PEOPLE, FOR SUCH A CHEAP PRICE.

Also, lots of dancing opportunities. Ya gotta come if you're an extreme
dancer!!! And don't forget...LAURA NAVARRA, who went to the
Springflingswingthing will also be teaching and dancing with everyone.
Don't know who she is???...well, check out the website and see if you
recognize Laura:

http://homestead.juno.com/dukeofdetroit/flipincolumbus.html

That will have a link for more info on the dances and the workshop , or, you
can click onto:

www.swingcolumbus.com

Hope everyone can come. This should be a blast and a half!!! Oh, and if
you sign up for the workshop ahead of time with a group of people, it's even
cheaper!!! Check it out!!!

Educating Young Audiences
************************************
Here's a special message from Kregg Barentine, the Swingtips' fearless leader:

The Swingtips would like to thank all our loyal fans for
your continued support. We are amazed at the positive influence good
music has upon new generations of listeners and concert "go-ers".
We, The Swingtips, place great importance on the cultivation and
education of new audiences, especially those of our children.
Recently, The Swingtips assumed this role of educating young
audiences while performing at Fuller Elementary School in Tempe, AZ.
My 3 year old son, Cole, also made a special appearance with the band
where he played the drums. Many of the students wrote back to the
band. Here are a few of the comments these students sent back to the
band (all spellings and grammar are as the students intended):

Dear Swingtips, (all letters started this way)

"I like your music alout. Can I have your odagraf? do you have
conserts? Why do you war white and black? I wish I could play in your
band." - Nicole

"I liked your asemmbly. The music was great! I like all of your
songs. But I like all of the instermints. How do you all p at the
same time?" - Lila (perhaps "p" means "play"?)

"I like your music. how did you get thos esrmns? Can we be friends?" - Josh

"I like yor musac. yor musac was fun." - Marcos

"Do any of you play the violin? I'm going too. I liked your music,
and the little boy who played drums. You'r a great music group. How
does Mr. Yandell play the trumpit upside down?" - Allyson

"I loved your performents. I wish I was like you. I wish I was like
that kid. He was osum. I wish I was like him." - Zoey

"I like to play the drums. And I like to play the bass. And I like
to play the tumpet. And I like to play the saxaphone."- Jonah

"Can you play old madonald had a farm? I liked your music very much.
all of you are very cool. I like your Band very much. I like your
dansing very much." - Jordy

"That littel boy is good at the drums. How did he learn did he learn
it from you. Did you teach him. I just want to tell you that you were
good." (no name included)

"I can play the mellode harp. My mom is going to put me in flut
lesins. She has a flut that I can play. I have a mellode harp. Her
flut needs new pads. Your friend," - Samantha

" I like your bass. You are so good playing the trumpet. I love
your saxaphone. It was so fun being there. I like your music." -
Sandra

" I likee your music! My faveite erthmeant is the trumpet. I hope
you can come again soon so we can hear your music." _ Katherine

"I liked all of your solose. Mr. skot yandell I liked your soloe the
best. you are a great meuzshone. I wish I could here beter." -
Hannah

" I like your music. My favorit is the upright piano because I play
it. My teacher is Mrs. Yandell. I like her a lot!!!" - Daniel

"I liked your music a lot. I play the drums and keyboard. How long
have you guys been playing? What stores can you buy your CD's?" -
Devin

" I liked your music it sounded great. I was plesed to heor it. It
was cind of funny." - Lucas

"I play the drums, all-though I'm not very good at it, but I still
feel I want to play it. I really engoyed your play today." - Lucas

Thanks to all the students from all the schools over the past several
years who have sent The Swingtips letters of appreciation. There was
a time when live music was all there was to be entertained by,
something that more mature generations know and remember fondly.
Unfortunately, live music venues have been replaced by technological
substitutes for the "real thing". We, The Swingtips, feel fortunate
to be active in performing/teaching this important art form in
communities worldwide. We hope that all persons who share our love
of music and this unique, American art form we call "Swing" and
"Jazz", music will pass it on to others so they, too, might find joy
in an important part of this world's history. All our best,
   Kregg Barentine and The Swingtips

Here is the message Del sent out earlier this week about Swing-a-Billy Sunday
this week.

From:    delvilla@... (David Thomas Rice)
To:    aaswing@yahoogroups.com

Thanks!

- Del

If you would like to improve and expand your lindy hop skill and repertoire, get exited, cause Chris Gehant (OK Chris - OK for Oklahoma) is coming to town!  He is an awesome dancer/instructor out of Oklahoma that is now entering the national teaching circuit and has performed all around the world, even at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney!  Chris has trained extensively with the top lindy instructors around the world and adds a unique flavor to his lindy with a background in jazz, tap, hip hop, and ballet.  Not only is his resume impressive, he is a super nice guy as well.  He will be in town and available for privates and group lessons April 27th to May 1st.  Leads and follows- take advantage of this opportunity!!!  :)

Email me to set up times, locations, and to discuss cost:  Sarah sbaldwin@...

As an idea:  if Swing Ann Arbor wanted to set up a group class, they could probably get a good room, and for free at that....
