Hey there,
We just wanted to remind you that the early bird price
for the Montreal Lindy Exchange – August 10-12 will
end tomorrow, July 15th. Afterwards, your full weekend
package will be $90CAD, rather than the current $80
CAD.

And what does a weekend package include? Lots and lots
of dancing obviously in a pretty nifty city! We have
three evening dances with great bands such as Gordon
Webster and Montreal’s own Colin Perry and Blind with
fabulous trumpet player Roger Walls. A fun Saturday
afternoon dancing by the St.Lawrence river and a
Sunday afternoon at the Cat’s Corner downtown studios.
And well, obviously, we’ve also got two cool late
nights too!

**Special Guest!!**
Plus, not only will we have awesome DJs from near and
far, but we’ve also invited the lovely Dawn Hampton to
spend the weekend with us. For those who have yet to
meet Dawn, well she’s just this classy lady who has
devoted her life to performing. She’s so fabulous that
Lindy Hoppers keep on throwing parties for her every
time she gets younger and wiser ;)!

Don’t miss your chance and come to live, or relive,
the Montreal Lindy Exchange experience at LeMTLX 2007

Hey y'all.

How's your Monday going? Good? Great. Me too. Thanks
for asking! Great weather we're having. OKAY ENOUGH
PLEASANTRIES! This Wednesday is going to be so
awesome, celebratory rivers of lava are flowing out of
my ears right now! Like right now! It's really hot!
And very exciting! Also HOT and EXCITING is ERIN
MORRIS! Yes, ladies and gents, the stupendous Erin is
back in Ann Arbor for a little visit and she and Jason
will be teaching the mother trucking crap out of us!
(That's a good thing. You don't want any mother
trucking crap INSIDE of you, do you?) For those of you
who have never experienced the Erin-y goodness, you
are in for a real treat! She has legs like a pony,
feet like fire, and swingouts like butter! Don't
worry, she isn't actually a hodgepodge of animals and
inanimate things. That'd be scary. (Scary awesome?
that's up to you to decide) She is more of a
combination of awesome, loveable, and downright hott.
Right before that is the second in the series of
beginner lindy progressive lessons with Kurtsplosion
and Lauratacular! You lucky people will be continuing
to learn how to improve your swing out and maybe pick
up a few moves along the way! ooOOOoo! Burning up the
turntables (not really, nobody worry) will be DJs JD
and Matt M, playing a bunch of sweet dance tunes!

travel size 3oz or under in a clear plastic baggie:
Wednesday, July 18th in the Pendleton Room at the
Michigan Union
6:30-7:30: Beginner lindy hop progressive with Kurt
and Laura!
7:30-8:30: Intermediate lindy hop drop-in with Erin
and Jason
8:30-9:30: Beginner 6-count (ecs) drop-in with Erin
and Jason
9:30-11:25: JD and Matt M. jazz it up! And YOU bring
in your jams for the request breaks!

Other Announcements:

The ANN ARBOR ART FAIR starts this very same day!
Come on out and visit! See and support independent
artists! Do some lindy bombing with us! (see next
announcement) Remember to give yourself ample time to
deal with traffic and to find parking as multiple
streets will be closed for multiple blocks (including
right in front of the Union!) Otherwise, have fun and
see you Wednesday!

Have you ever thought, "I wonder where I can find,
make friends with, and communicate with a group of
like-minded swing dance lovers right in my
geographical region?" I know we all have. I MOST
CERTAINLY HAVE THOUGHT THOSE EXACT WORDS. Well, don't
just think about it, check this out: www.a2swings.com
- a forum for swing dancers in the Ann Arbor area (as
well as swing dancers all over Michigan)! Here you can
find out about local, regional, and national swing
dances, workshops, and events as well as coordinate
outings, etc. NOTE: a2swings.com is not a Swing Ann
Arbor forum, nor are they affiliated; views expressed
within the forum are not necessarily shared by Swing
Ann Arbor, its elected board, or its members unless
otherwise noted. That being said lots of people who
you dance with are on the board so check it out! Once
again: www.a2swings.com!

Swing Ann Arbor loves you. But only if you have
vacated the dance floor by 11:30pm. We are supposed to
be completely out (DJ equipment, everything) by the
time 11:30 rolls around or else the staff gets angry
at us and threatens to not let us rent rooms at the
Union anymore. Please help us keep our dance floor by
booting yourselves out after the last song. Similarly,
please don't put powder or other floor-altering
substances on the dance floor. That also makes the
Union gods angry. "GRRRRRR!!" They say.

It's about that time again! No, not my period, silly!
Swing dancing! (Way more exciting than menstrual
cycles HAHAHAHAha...ha?) First of all, we'd like to
thank Erin Morris for taking time out of her busy
schedule to come teach the lessons last week! They
were spectacular and we learned a ton of awesome moves
and concepts! YAY! Thanks, Erin!! Okay, so this week,
we've got some fabulousness planned for all y'all.
Kurt and Laura are ready and raring to teach more
sweet lindy action to those of you signed up for the
beginner lindy progressives. Next, preheat your oven
to awesome (yeah I stole it) because Jason and Sarah
are going to serve up some oven-fresh dancing!
Everybody needs their weekly dose of Vitamin J with a
booster shot of Sarah-tine for energy and clarity of
mind. In a baked good. They'll be teaching lindy hop
in the intermediate slot and 6-count swing during the
beginner slot! It's-a gonna be great! Aural
stimulation will be provided by DJs Hester and Jason!

just a nibble:
Wednesday, July 25th in the Pendleton Room at the
Michigan Union
6:30-7:30: Beginner Lindy Hop progressives with Kurt
and Laura!
7:30-8:30: Intermediate drop-in Lindy Hop with Jason
and Sarah
8:30-9:30: Beginner drop-in 6-count (ecs) with Jason
and Sarah
9:30-11:25: Hester and Jason rock out like brook trout
and you guys provide music for the request breaks!
(feel free to rock out like rainbow trout, brown
trout, or lake trout if you don't want to rock out
like brook trout)

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

- Come voice your opinions on how you want swing
dancing to improve! Our next OPEN MEETING is Sunday,
July 29th from 8pm to 10pm in the WELKER room of the
Michigan Union. Please come join us in the discussion,
or if you don't want to discuss, just sit in and see
what's going on!

- August is going to bring some more changes to our
schedule! This is how it's going down: Still on
Wednesday, still at the Union.

6:30-7pm: Open/Guided practice! Those of you who just
want a space to practice now have it! Work on moves or
your swingout or whatever! Always present will be an
instructor to take questions, or if you want to learn
something, present the topic to the instructor and
they'll teach it to you! Whee! This service is
absolutely free! Oh my gosh free. Free floor and free
question answering and instruction if you want it!
YEEEEE!!!

7-8pm: Intermediate drop-in lessons. These are just
what they sound like, same as always. Those of you who

moves down pat should attend the intermediate drop-in
lessons! Dance style will vary from week to week! Some
dance styles that may be covered: Lindy Hop, 6-count,
Charleston, Balboa, Slow Dancing, and more!

8-9pm: Beginner Lindy Hop progressives! That's right!
They're back! If you are completely new to the
terrific dance of the lindy hop, you should come and
learn it! For those of you who need a refresher or
want to think about your lindy concepts you should
also come to this class! This is an amazing class!
Come see what it's all about. A one-time fee for the
four-week progressive will be charged the first week

9:30-11:25: Same as always, open dancing with awesome

Because you bring them in! YAY!

hosted by the Motown Shagdown Weekend Event
www.myspace.com/motownshagdown

Sept. 15/2007
Rhythm n Shoes Ballroom
2172 Franklin Rd
Bloomfield Hills, MI 48302
9PM TO 12AM

What is the Battle of the Swing Cities? It's the greatest dance competition
where cities or swing scenes make a team to compete in 3 divisions and
competes against other teams. Beginners, Intermediates, and Advance dancers
can compete without pressure cuz this comp is all about FUN!!! Everyone
claps and cheers for each other and we encourage beginners to actually
compete so they get inspired to learn and dance more...and maybe even
inspire others. Basically, this is a comp for people who want to have an
enjoyable time while dancing in front of their peers without too much
pressure like those major dance competitions. Plus, the sense of camaraderie
is priceless. Oh, and don't worry. There will be open dancing, too.

This year only a maximum of 5 teams who will compete for prizes and the
covetted Velvet Cup which has been passed around 5 times now. The team to
beat is Team Lansing who has won the cup for 2 years in a row! Will they go
for a 3-peat? Will there be a Team Detroit to step on up and bring it back
to Motown? Will a powerful force from Ann Arbor hit up their first win? Or
will there be an out of town team tear up the Motown Beatdown?

What are the Divisions for this competition???

SHOWCASE DIVISION 9:10PM

Couple or multiple dancers will dance to a song of their choice which must
be considered swing music (ie. music from 1930's-50's...no disco). Don't
make this trivial. Does not have to be choreographed, but it would help.
Aerials, tricks, dips, chains, whips are all allowed. No dance
restrictions. Maximum time of song: 3min. +/- a few seconds.

MOTOWN JAM DIVISION 10:00PM

Something new for this battle. Here, one couple from each team will compete
"jam style" with the other competitors to.....MOTOWN MUSIC!!! Yup, we're
from Detroit so why not pay tribute to the great sounds of Motown. The
music may be Motown R&B, Motown Blues, Motown Soul, or even Motown Funk!!!
My choice. There will be 2 rounds in which every couple will be able to
dance to maybe 2 different tempos or 2 different styles of Motown with an
all-skate at the end of each round. There will possibly be a 3rd round.
Get your most versatile dancer for this division 'cuz the Motown Jam
Division is goin' to be Detroit Crazy!!! No dance restrictions.

JUST DANCE DIVISION 11:00PM

Still my all-time favourite, the Just Dance Division will feature a couple
or multiple dancers dancing with ATLEAST 60% recognizable swing dancing to
their choice of a NON-SWING song. Yup, you know how this competition goes.
Maximum time of song: 3 min. +/- a few seconds. No dance restrictions.

General Rules that all must abide
1. Each City/Team must consist of atleast 3 couples in which atleast one
couple must compete in one of the three divisions. As was the rule before,
the people on your team doesn't have to be from your city but must have
danced in your city or dance scene atleast once...yup, just once. How easy
is that?!

2. Each team must have atleast 3 men and 3 ladies on their team

3. The whole team must pay a competition fee of $40 for the whole team. If
more than 6 people in the team, it will be a flat $50. This money is to go
for the prizes and other essentials for the competition.

4. All teams MUST register before September 8/2007 to be eligible to
compete. I'm going to be strict about that this year. Last minute teams
can bite me.

5. Last but not least, if you're in this competition to just win and not
have fun, then don't even come out to compete. Judges are looking for fun
competitors and not whiney dancers. Winning is fun...having fun getting
last...priceless.

WHAT I NEED FROM EACH TEAM *IMPORTANT*

Each team or team leader must email me the following:

1. Team Name and Leader. I need email and phone number for contact
purposes.

2. Names of each couple and what division they are dancing in. If there
are more than 2 people dancing in the Showcase or Just Dance It Division,
make sure to write EVERYONE'S name.

3. I need to collect the $40 from each Team when the teams all meet that
nite at the event. If there are more than 6 people in your whole team, the
cost will be a flat $50, just to compensate prizes. I will only contact the
Team Leader with all the information, so make sure your leader is reliable.
Team registration will end a week before the competition. My email is
Deornight@... .

Hey Everybody,

We'd like you to come to our open meeting to voice
your opinions, offer suggestions, give positive or
negative feedback, come find out how Swing Ann Arbor
works, etc.

Here are the details:

OPEN MEETING is Sunday, July 29th from 8pm to 10pm in
the WELKER room of the Michigan Union.

The Welker room is on the first floor of the Union
hidden way in back. If you come into the Union from
the front, you'll be making a left past the
information desk, past Amer's, into a hallway. The
rooms will then proceed in this order: Blain, Kuenzel,
Welker. It's mildly confusing, so here's where the
floor plan is located:
http://www.umich.edu/~uunions/maps/floorplans_mu.htm#

We really want to hear your opinions so come on out!

No, that's not the name of some German techno song.
It's what's going on this Wednesday! I mean, maybe it
is a German techno song, but it's for sure what's
happening at Wednesday night dancing at the Union! And
the class schedule has changed! Swing Ann Arbor has
gone crazy! (crazy AWESOME) That's right, we haven't
lowered prices on anything, but we're put a whole
bunch more hawtness in! The hawtness has been shown in
some clinical trials to improve body and mind! Some
side effects include love of jazz, slight dehydration,
delirium, and if you abruptly discontinue use of the
hawt dancing, you may suffer withdrawal, get the
shakes, dry mouth, and your head may explode. First up
at 6:30 is a brief guided practice! That's right, if
you want to work on moves you learned last week, or
anything else, come on out for a half hour practice
session! Instructors will be available to take
questions or teach brief moves. Then at 7:
intermediate lindy! Matt and Sandy (goin' with third
person today) are going to teach you some fun new
moves that will make you smile until birds try to nest
in your teeth! So buy a mouth guard or a shoulder-cat
to keep away the birds and come on out! Next is Kurt
and Laura's last class (TIME CHANGED TO START AT 8pm)
in the Lindy progressive series! Now, now, dry your
tears and be consoled. BE CONSOLED! Because they have
an awesome lesson prepared for you guys. And if you
feel like you didn't get enough, another beginner
lindy progressive will be offered for August!
(Instructors TBA) Hooray! After that the progressive,
Matt and Sandy are coming back atcha with some
beginner 6-count at 9! This week, we're doing
something special with the open dancing! Matt O. will
DJ the first segment and the request break. Then we
have a real treat: little DJ trainees! Awww how cute.
Okay, they're not little, but they're cute! They'll
each have a few minutes to try out their turntable
skills! Hooray! Come on our and meet some of the new
talent!

Shoulder-cat says:
RAOWRRR! BIRDS!! Wednesday, August 1st in the
Pendleton room at the Michigan Union
6:30-7:00pm: Guided practice (FREE!) just for those of
you who want to improve their dancing! purrrr
7:00-8:00: Intermediate lindy drop-in with Matt and
Sandy. Meowwww
8:00-9:00: Beginner lindy progressive (TIME CHANGE)
with Kurt and Laura! Mew!
9:00-9:30: Beginner drop-in 6-count (ecs) with Matt
and Sandy. Achoo! (I couldn't think of any other cat
noises)
9:30-11:25: Open dancing with DJ Matt O. and
up-and-coming DJ trainees! Request breaks in between!

Other announcements:

-I've lost my shoulder-cat. If anybody has seen him,
he answers to the name of Snorkle McBooger and has a
love of all things argyle. Please contact me during
open dancing if you see him... the loneliness and
birds nesting in my teeth is more than I can bear.

- BIG APPLE! The workshop for learning this incredibly
fun and high-energy dance is coming up on SATURDAY,
AUGUST 11th from 11am-2pm at the Wild Swan Theater
(416 West Huron, Ann Arbor, just past downtown)! The
price lowers the more people who show up, so bring a
friend for your own miserly purposes! I mean bring a
friend so you can share the fun! Lose ten pounds doing
this dance! No really, if you do this dance enough,
you will eventually lose ten pounds. If you're really
skinny, you may want to eat like ten bags of potato
chips before attempting this dance otherwise you might
disappear into the jazz. Wait, that actually sounds
awesome. YAY BIG APPLE!

- The Boilermaker Jazz Band is coming to Chicago this
week/weekend! A few people are planning on making a
trip out to Chi-town to enjoy this incredible and
talented band, known all over the U.S. for their
awesomeness. For details, visit www.a2swings.com and
look under "Road Trips!"
