The final week of Lincoln Center Out of Doors comes fast and furious.

Looking backwards for a minute:

Lincoln Center is a huge resource for everyone in the city. I hope you take advantage of it before summer fades away - Wendy Perron in Dance Magazine

Raves for Blitz the Ambassador, Spoek Mathambo and Iyadede from the NY Times, The Village Voice,  and the Wall Street Journal.

Looking forward:

Gothamist says that Spike’s Sideshowbrings good old freaky fun to the plazas of Lincoln Center.”  Don’t miss Data the Robot’s standup comedy as seen on TED, Jonathan Nosan’s spectacular contortion, folkie Christine Lavin’s virtuoso baton twirling, various members of Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, and New Orleans jazz from Aurora Nealand & the Royal Roses (as seen on Treme).

The Village Voice says about tonight’s Laurie Anderson show:Often imitated but never duplicated, Anderson is the beatific mother of downtown avant-garde performance art--her androgynous, post-punk persona is seared into the collective unconscious, haunting dreams and turning ordered worlds upside down. She practices the dying art of enchantment, insidiously propagating a politically charged message through trance-inducing electronic mantras… Tonight, she plays ringleader in a genre-confounding carnival of unearthly sounds.”

And the inventive “digifiddler” Todd Reynolds (“Defining Todd Reynolds’ music isn’t just difficult, it’s also unnecessary. Whatever time you spend trying to decide what brand of post-, neo-, modern-, or avant-whatever he could be would be a waste. You can easily turn that headache into enjoyment by stepping back, thinking of the sound purely as “music”, and just absorbing all of the pieces from there.”) debuts a band new collaboration with vaudevillian sound sculptor Sxip Shirey and human beatbox Adam Matta plus a string section of some of NYC’s finest violinists.

Tomorrow night: burlesque punk marching band MarchFourth.    David Dorfman Dance’s premiere live collaboration with The Family Stone, Prophets of Funk , plus Debo Band’s Ethio-groove collaboration with Ethiopia’s Fendika, featuring Melaku Belay (who you might remember from his amazing dancing with Getatchew Merkuria and The Ex a few years back.)

Friday, Tan Dun conducts Metropolis Ensemble, playing music from his three martial arts film scores (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragen, Hero,Tthe Banquet, accompanied by striking film footage.  It will be a 50 member orchestra, plus 40 singers from the Collegiate Chorale – spectacular.  And before that the Chinese American Arts Council presents some of NYC’s finest martial artists up close and personal, including the miraculous face-changing masks….

I’ll try to write again before the weekend to tell you about all the incredible artists that will be a part of our Roots of American Music weekend, with a special focus on the Music of Memphis and Nashville (Sun Records, Stax Records, bluegrass, rockabilly, country, soul, funk and more…) but wanted to share this  4**** review for Steve Cropper’s tribute to the 5 Royales album, Dedicated, which he’ll be celebrating on our closing performance with special guests Bettye Lavette, Ellis Hooks, Dylan LeBlanc, David Hood of Muscle Shoals, the Uptown Horns and many more:

After our schedule, I wanted to share the inaugural line-up of my globalFEST collaborator Isabel Soffer’s new venture Live Sounds, and some of the incredible artists she’s bringing to NYC in the fall, including the not-to-be-missed NY debut of Congo’s Staff Benda Bilili.

Finally, some reading for artists: the newly launched www.StoryAmp.com is offering a free 60-page PDF Amplify Your Story: Getting More Press Through the Art of the Pitch, which includes advice from leaders at FanBridge, Topspin, Bandcamp, CD Baby, & more. Read the book and get ready for StoryAmp, a groundbreaking platform that connects musicians and the press.

Portuguese Fado: Antonio Zambujo

A US Debut!Antonio Zambujo

The past few years have been very productive for Antonio Zambujo, an exceptional Portuguese artist who created a quiet revolution in the fado world when he won the coveted Amália Rodrigues Foundation's prize for the Best Male Fado Singer. Portuguese fado is likened to American blues and Greek rembetika for its ability to capture life's hardships with songs of bittersweet nostalgia and longing or saudade.

Azam Ali: From Night to the Edge of Day

Azam Ali has oneAzam Ali of the most seductive and effortlessly disciplined voices today. The Iranian- born, Indian-raised vocalist makes traditional and newly composed songs smolder with dreamy longing, with the grief of exile in a conflict-riven world, and with a keen edge of hope - sublimely interpreted through ultra-modern beats and ambient drones.

David Murray plays Nat King Cole En Espaņol

NY Debut!

David Murray

Few musicians in jazz history have proven more vigorously productive and resourceful than David Murray. His new album, with a North American release date in October 2011, and live project are akin to aheartfelt love letter to one of the great figures in popular music and a phenomenally gifted jazz musician, Nat King Cole. More than 50 years after their original release, we hear the fruit of one of Murray's most improbable and effective projects: an interpretation of two albums Cole Espaņol and More Cole en Espaņol recorded by Nat King Cole in Spanish and Portuguese joined by a Cuban ensemble.  Details and video

Ballake Sissoko & Vincent Segal: Chamber Music
First NY show since last year's globalFEST2011 stunning performance

Tuesday 9/27 at 7pm

One of the top kora (21-stringed lute-harp) players of the new generation,
Malian artist Ballake Sissoko has worked with everyone from African icons
(Toumani Diabate) to blues masters (Taj Mahal) and Italian minimalist composers
(Ludovico Einaudi). Vincent Segal has taken the cello into new realms as a
musician with the French trip-hop group Bumcello and in collaborations with
Sting and Elvis Costello. Sissoko and Segal struck up a friendship that
blossomed into an elegant, rich acoustic collaboration. The unexpected
intertwining of their instruments creates an intimate space for subtle, yet
striking sounds flowing from African traditions and European classical roots.
It's chamber music for the 21st century.

Angélique Kidjo and Lionel Loueke duo!
Saturday, Oct 1
7pm

Metropolitan Museum Concert Hall

Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium
METROPOLITAN MUSEUM CONCERTS
Called “Africa’s premier diva” by Time magazine, Grammy Award-winning
singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo performs folk songs from her native Benin
(formerly Dahomey, West Africa) with her fellow countryman Lionel Loueke,
guitar. They will perform traditional songs that tell the legends and tales of
Benin in an acoustic format with voice, guitar, and calebasse percussion. The
rich multicultural heritage of Benin is brought to life with Kidjo’s unique
blend of Zilin vocal technique and jazz vocalese.

This concert is inspired by the exhibition Heroic Africans: Legendary Leaders,
Iconic Sculptures, on view September 21, 2011 – January 29, 2012. The
exhibition considers eight landmark sculptural traditions from West and Central
Africa created between the 13th and early 20th century in terms of the
individuals who inspired their creation. The exhibition is made possible in
part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Ceil & Michael E. Pulitzer
Foundation, Inc., and the National Endowment for the Arts. The exhibition was
organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in collaboration with the
Museum Rietberg, Zurich.
Angélique Kidjo’s internationally acclaimed repertoire includes collaborations
with various recording artists such as Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, Alicia
Keys, Josh Groban, Branford Marsalis, and Joss Stone. Known for her dynamic and
uplifting music, she has translated her distinctive work in the arts to that of
philanthropy. By promoting education for girls in Africa through her foundation,
Batonga and as a UNICEF Goodwill ambassador Kidjo travels the world to inspire
and empower.
Like Miriam Makeba was before her, Kidjo is the continent’s most internationally
celebrated female musical exponent, although she has lived outside Africa for
more than two decades. She currently resides in New York City, where she is an
exceptionally active member of the music scene, reaching people around the world
with her recordings, tours, and philanthropic work. www.kidjo.com

Okayplayer + Okayafrica are organizing a group of musicians, DJs, producers,
music industry professionals, and fans to join the protesters who are occupying
Wall Street – those who are fighting against the corrupt 1% and on behalf of the
99%. This people-powered movement has vowed to end the corruption of US
democracy by corporations and those in power and are starting by an Arab
Spring-modeled occupation of Wall Street.

The protest started on September 17th and is still going strong. Over these
days, thousands have gone down to Wall Street, some camping out, to protest
alongside such notables include Dr. Cornel West, Michael Moore, and Susan
Sarandon. In recent days the protests have taken a violent turn – police have
been beating, pepper spraying, and arresting peaceful, law-abiding protesters.
(See this video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UHsLccXQUY)

Join us in supporting the protest: one morning in the next week we will be going
down to Wall Street en masse to lend our voice to the movement and support the
protesters. Let's help them make a powerful statement.

Sorry for the second email in a row - I hit send too soon. I'm sending this
from my personal account, and the online interface was more sensitive than
sending via work email. This is a personal email.

I know many of you subscribe to this list because of interest in cultural
events, and may or may not agree with my political beliefs, so please accept
this in the spirit of dialogue and education about what is going on at Occupy
Wall Street. I will not use this list regularly as a place to share info of
this type - follow me on Twitter @ActiveCultures for the most info or visit my
ActiveCultures Facebook group for less frequent postings.

I've been away most of the past few weeks, and Occupy Wall Street is a very
nascent movement, which is changing very quickly. A friend passed along a
comment that one if its strengths is that it's in a "permanent state of beta."
I'm sharing the information as I learn myself about Occupy Wall Street's
background, "horizontal structure" and "demands" (though there is a strong
resistance at this early stage to reduce the dissent to this framework.)

I wanted to pass along a few links that I've found helpful in learning about the
movement, along with a request from OkayPlayer/OkayAfrica for musicians to get
involved, which you'll find below.

Video of mass arrests from yesterday's protest on the Brooklyn Bridge

And a TED video that I've been thinking a lot about this week.

"How to Start a Movement" TED Talk by Derek Silvers:
http://www.ted.com/talks/derek_sivers_how_to_start_a_movement.html
"First, of course you know, a leader needs the guts to stand out and be
ridiculed. But what he's doing is so easy to follow. So here's his first
follower with a crucial role. He's going to show everyone else how to
follow....the first follower is actually an underestimated form of leadership in
itself. It takes guts just to stand out like that....And here comes a second
follower. Now it's not a lone nut, it's not two nuts, three is a crowd, and a
crowd is news. So a movement must be public. It's important, not just to show
the leader, but the followers because you find that new followers emulate the
followers, not the leader."

Here's the call for artist support I got a few days ago - the shape of things
has changed already just a few days later, especially after 700 people were
arrested. But if you look at the video from the Brooklyn Bridge, you can see
that the size of the movement has already grown rapidly.

As promised, back to sending missives about cultural events of interest.

First off:

We are very proud for Lincoln Center to collaborate with the NY Public Library to co-commission the 4th music-theater collaboration between cartoonist Ben Katchor (Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer) and songwriter Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion).  They’ve collaborated on the award-winning “The Slugbearers of Kayrol Island, The Rosenbach Company, and A Checkroom Romance, which we presented in the David Rubenstein Atrium last year.  In celebration of the NYPL main branch’s centennial anniversary, they approached us to help support the creation of this latest collaboration, which will again mix Ben’s sardonic sense of humor, love of the urban underbelly and evocative drawings with Mark’s endlessly catchy and quirky songwriting.  The piece premieres in three different locations over four nights, so you have plenty of opportunities to see it. It kicks off at the Performing Arts Library at Lincoln Center tonight, moves to the main branch on Tuesday and Wednesday, and returns to Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium to wrap up as part of Target Free Thursdays.  And all performances are free.

Up From the Stacks
New Music-Theater by Mark Mulcahy and Ben Katchor
with Ken Maiuri, Dave Trenholm and Brian Marchese.

Set in The New York Public Library at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street and in the environs of Times Square circa 1970, Up From the Stacks is the story of Lincoln Cabinée, a college student working part-time as a page, retrieving books for readers from the Library’s collection of 43 million items. This routine evening job inadvertently thrusts young Cabinée into the treacherous crossroads of scholarly obsession and the businesses of amusement and vice that then flourished in the 42nd Street area. The intellectual life of the city and the happiness of a young man hang in the balance.

Co-commissioned by the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at The New York Public Library, and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts for Target Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium.

Four performances:
Monday, October 3, 2011 at 6pm at The New York Public LIbrary for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, 40 Lincoln Center Plaza, Bruno Walter Auditorium

Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 5, 2011 both at 7pm at The New York Public Library, Fifth Ave. and 42nd St. (Stephen A. Schwarzman Building) South Court Auditorium
Register here for free seats:

Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 8:30 at The David Rubinstein Atrium at Lincoln Center (Broadway at 62nd St.)

Upcoming at the David Rubenstein Atrium, we also have two fantastic Malian artists:

October 13 – Sidi Toure – the NY debut of Thrill Jockey’s latest exponent of “Sahel folk”

“An intimate gem of bone-dry acoustic Afro-minimalism.” —Spin

Sidi Touré made his first guitar as a child, constructing it from his wooden writing slate in the ancient town of Gao, Mali. In 1976, Touré became the youngest member of Gao’s regional orchestra, the Songhaï Stars and won best singer twice at the Biennales du Mali. Touré’s music is an acoustic desert blues practiced in both the local Songhai tradition and American blues style. He creates a pleasant oasis in his most recent album, “Sahel Folk” for those who want to explore the dessert traditions through West African storytelling. The music of Sidi Touré echoes a rich heritage.

October 20 – Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba – Opening night of Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival

In Malian villages deep in the forests watered by the Niger River, hunting has always meant more than food; it is the center of cultural and religious life, and hunters here are seen as healers, as seers, as ties to an unimaginably ancient past. Along with his band, Bassekou Kouyate is a new voice from this tradition, an intensely energetic performer whose fiery virtuosity with the rhythmic Malian lute called hte “ngoni” has brought him international renown, including collaborations with Ali Farka Touré, Carlos Santana, and Béla Fleck.

Since you have a few other chances to see Up from the Stacks, I feel ok about telling you about another great event on Thursday, October 6 –

PEE WEE, FRED & MACEO: A FUNKY GOOD TIME in Celebration of Pee Wee Ellis' 70th Birthday.

Thursday, October 6

Town Hall, NYC

Pee Wee Ellis – tenor saxophone, vocals
Fred Wesley – trombone, vocals
Maceo Parker – alto saxophone, vocals

with their all-star band: Larry Goldings, keys,  Christian McBride, bass, Bill Stewart, drums, and Rodney Jones, guitar

You probably remember when I bragged this summer about having the chance to play trumpet on “I Feel Good” with JB Horns’ Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley at Midsummer Night Swing’s Soul Train 40th Anniversary concert (Proof here with the sound of my playing carefully covered up).  In honor of Pee Wee’s 70th birthday, they’ve finally wised up and got a real horn player, the third part of the mighty triumvirate, alto great Maceo Parker, along with a killer allstar rhythm section of leading-edge jazz instrumentalists. Larry Goldings, keys, Christian McBride, bass, Bill Stewart, drums and Rodney Jones, guitar.  Besides their work with the Godfather of Soul, where they shaped the sound of such classics as “Cold Sweat” and “Say it Loud  - I’m Black and I’m Proud”,  funk’s defining horn section have been featured with Parliament-Funkadelic, Prince, and Van Morrison, as well as being sampled by countless hip-hop artists.   I can promise you, calling this evening “A Funky Good Time” is no hype.  Expect greasy funk, punchy riffs, and hit after hit.

Hi friends

A few quick, but all very important things.  Here’s a summary:

-          Derek Beres going away party at Nublu in Outer Place tonight with Earthrise Sound System, Duke Mushroom, Mark Basta and Acidophilus (aka, me)

-          Malian music at Lincoln Center – Sidi Touré, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, Rokia Traore

-          globalFEST Kickstarter campaign kicks off!

-          Future of Music Coalition musician money survey.

EarthRise SoundSystem: Derek's Farewell Party
An all-out jam before Derek heads West, featuring EarthRise SoundSystem, DJs Mark Basta and Bill Bragin
Nublu | 24 1st Ave (1st-2nd St) | NYC
THU 10.13.11 | 11 pm - 4 am | $10

As some of you know, Derek will be getting married next weekend, and then he and his bride-about-to-be Erica will be relocating to Santa Monica where it’s far less drizzly than it is today.  To send him off in style, he’s put together an Earthrise Soundsystem party at Nublu, temporarily located underneath Lucky Chengs on 1st Ave between 1st and 2nd  Streets in the East Village. In honor of his move to Cali, I’ll be spinning some tracks I just picked up in Colombia (ok, different Cali, but still, I picked up some cool new tracks…) as well as a couple of old faves.  I’ll be sitting in sometime between 11:15 and 1 – hope to see you there.

Malian Music at Lincoln Center: Target Free Thursdays and White Light Festival

There are a few extraordinary Malian artists coming up at Lincoln Center, two of them completely free.  For the two Atrium shows, note that no tickets are required, and the venue often reaches capacity between 7:30 and 8pm, but we can’t predict.  We recommend you come early, and enjoy the food and drink from Tom Collicchio’s ‘wichcraft café.

Tonight, the Sahel Folk of Sidi Touré as part of Target Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium.

Next Thursday, Oct 20, as the opening night of the White Light Festival, the ngoni innovator Bassekou Kouyate brings his band Ngoni Ba for a very special show exploring Mandé spiritual ancestral traditions.

Finally, also as part of the White Light Festival, the wonderful Malian singer Rokia Traore continues her collaboration with director Peter Sellars in Desdemona, featuring a libretto by Toni Morrison.  See below for full details on what should be a spectacular production.  And check www.whitelightfestival.org for information about lots of other events which should be of interest, including The Passion of Joan of Arc by Portishead’s Adrian Utley and Goldfrapp’s Will Gregory, actor Steve Dillane in Four Quartets, Gidon Kremer’s  Homage to JS Bach, the London Symphony Orchestra playing Britten’s War Requiem, and lots more.

globalFEST 2012 launches its Kickstarter campaign – PLEASE SUPPORT!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/445430954/globalfest-2012

Yes, it's getting to be that time. We have an amazing line-up for the next globalFEST, which we'll announce shortly. And you may have read about our launch of the new globalFEST Touring Fund (gFTF), designed to help previous performers to make inroads into new communities around the country.

In the meantime, I'm hoping that my friends will once again help support the event through our just-launched Kickstarter campaign, helping keep the prices flat for the 9th year in a row. Support at the $50 level and get a ticket for the event plus mixtape of the artists. Give higher and you'll get all kinds of VIP access. Most importantly, you'll help make this incredibly ambitious not-or-profit festival possible, creating a night of musical revelations which continues to reverberate around the country for years to come.  Out of the gate, Kevin Katsrup of Paradigm Talent Agency, Jimmy Saal of Atypical Arts in Jacksonville and musician Martha Redbone have already stepped up to contribute.  I hope you’ll join them.

October is the new June!

In addition to Derek and Erica’s wedding next weekend, this weekend is the long-awaited wedding of my great friends Mark and Steven.  I had the honor of accompanying them for the civil ceremony on the first day of same sex marriage, and I’m thrilled that they will be able to celebrate their religious and public wedding with their community of friends and family this weekend.  Mazel tov to all the abot to be newlyweds, and happy anniversary to my sister and brother-in-law Vicvtoria and Rich (and happy birthday to my niece Eleri!)

Future of Music Coalition Musician Money survey

The Future of Music Coalition is in the midst of a research initiative that is trying to understand how musicians make their money.  This month, the Money from Music Survey is asking artists to answer questions about their music-related income and what has changed over the last five years.  The survey is completely confidential and will take 10-30 minutes to complete.  They are in the home stretch of the survey rollout - only about 2 weeks left. Artsists from all genres are encouraged to respond – jazz, rock, hip-hop, world music, roots, classical…however you describe yourself.  Please spread the word to musicians you may know.

Here is a link to the survey. http://futureofmusic.org/ARS

They also have a resource center with posters, flyers, twitter avatars, sample blog posts, demo videos, PSAs and other goodies at http://futureofmusic.org/article/research/artist-revenue-streams-resources

Here are a couple links from Soundcheck and A Blog Supreme that explain a little bit more about what they are doing.

Conversations: Looking Within

Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse, 165 West 65th Street, 10th floor

http://www.whitelightfestival.org/index.php/white-light-2011-conversations

Join us for this pair of free weekend discussions as we explore the physical and the metaphysical aspects of the self, and how artistic impulses arise from our sense of ourselves and our souls. These conversations will be moderated by John Schaefer, host of WNYC’s Soundcheck, and will feature live musical performances that touch on each discussion’s theme.

Saturday, October 22, from 11 to 12:30

The Self

What do we mean when we say “I”? Do we have coherent, lasting identities, or is our idea of ourselves just a story we each continuously write anew? Modern science seems tantalizingly close to answering unanswerable questions about the evolutionary and neurological origins of consciousness—and whether we might be able to recreate it in silicon. Panelists include philosopher David Chalmers, psychiatrist Anne Hallward, biographer Edmund Morris (Beethoven: The Universal Composer and Theodore Rex, among others), and composer and neuroscientist Dave Soldier. Violinist Jennifer Koh will begin the conversation with a solo performance of Bach.

Sunday, October 23, from 1 to 2:30

The Soul

For millennia, the question of the self was inseparable from the question of the soul. In the second half of our conversation series, we explore the idea of our unknowable incorporeal essence, and how music can bring us closer to it. Panelists include anthropologist Alison S. Brooks, philosopher David Chalmers, composer Philip Glass, and shape-note singers Sacred Harp, who will kick things off with music from a uniquely American tradition.

Hi friends,

A few quick, time-sensitive things.

First, tonight and tomorrow is the NY premiere of Desdemona, the collaboration between the sublime Rokia Traore, Toni Morrison and Peter Sellars, as part of Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival.  You can use the code ROKIA for special discounts, too.  See below for more info, including a link to a great review from the LA Times, a preview video and more.  I’m going tonight – it should be really special.

The reason I’m going tonight, and not tomorrow, is that on Thursday, Nov 3, we have an amazing free show in the David Rubenstein Atrium – the astounding 30+ piece circus punk marching band Mucca Pazza, http://mucca-pazza.org/ from Chicago.  They were incredible opening for Balkan Beat Box at Lincoln Center Out of Doors two summers ago – and they will be positively explosive in the intimate Atrium space.  Come early…And did I mention, they have cheerleaders? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4D9soZpf7w

Also coming up in the David Rubenstein Atrium for Target Free Thursdays, Gilbert & Sullivan Players, Mimi Goese & Ben Neill’s Songs for Persephone, the Raymond Scott Orchestrette and more.  Check out the complete schedule here: http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium.

Finally, we’re getting down to the wire for our Kickstarter campaign for globalFEST 2012.  As you may know, Kickstarter is all or nothing.  If we don’t reach our full $10,000 goal, we get nothing.  We’re relying on this support to help keep ticket prices and venue capacity down.  And with a donation of $50 or more, it includes your ticket, a $40 value, so we ask those of you who are considering going to make a donation – higher support will also include special access and other great gifts.  We’ve announce the full line-up, and believe me when I say that it’s really a great edition.  See below for all the information. Many of you have already supported us – if so, thanks!  And please consider spreading the word by forwarding our info thru email, Facebook or Twitter. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/445430954/globalfest-2012

globalFEST Kickstarter Campaign - only 9 more days to meet our goal
kickstarterLogo

gF (January 8, 2012) is a creatively curated bright spot for music lovers in the dark days of early January. It's also a party, turning winter doldrums into a multi-continent romp on three-stages, at one of downtown New York's hippest venues. The event takes place on three stages at Webster Hall, and with one ticket, festival-goers can see twelve acts in one night, representing diverse global styles.

We have just started a kickstarter campaign to raise funds for gF 2012. gF is a not-for-profit, completely volunteer run event, and your contribution allows us to keep the ticket price the same for the 9th consecutive year.  If we exceed our fundraising goal, we'll be able to invest more money into the newly announced globalFEST Touring Fund (gFTF), funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation, which supports tours of previous gF performers, enabling them to reach new markets across the United States.  More on that to the left.

Join at the $50 level and you'll get a ticket to globalFEST (already a $40 value) + an mp3 mix tape. Give at a higher level and you'll get all kinds goodies + a brand-new t-shirt.  At any level, your contribution goes a long way!

gF2012 promises to fill the multiple, varied performance spaces at Webster Hall with irresistible dance sounds, reflective beauty, and singer-songwriter intensity.
Get on our mailing list and get the latest updates.

We truly appreciate your support at all levels!

About globalFEST

In 2003 representatives of three of the US's most vital arts organizations joined together to create globalFEST, a groundbreaking 1-night, 3-stage, 12-band world music festival, which concert goers pay one price to see.  The showcase festival seeks to move international music to the center of the performing arts field  by coinciding with the Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) conference.

Over 8 festivals, globalFEST has become one of the US's most highly anticipated and diverse cultural events and an essential catalyst for the world music field in North America. In 2010, globalFEST incorporated into its own non-profit organization.

Isaac Guzman wrote in The Daily News, "Aside from the high quality of the artists, what's striking about globalFEST is that it does away with typical notions of what constitutes world music."

The festival directors are Bill Bragin of Acidophilus: Live & Active Cultures, Isabel Soffer of Live Sounds and Shanta Thake of Joe's Pub at The Public Theater.

For more info visit globalFEST.org

New globalFEST touring fund

The gF Touring Fund (gFTF) is a unique program made possible by a generous grant from the Ford Foundation to support the festival and its mission of cultivating the world music market by showcasing tour-ready artists and expanding world music audiences.

All past and present globalFEST performers are eligible to apply for a competitive grant for reimbursement of qualified touring expenses, helping to defray the costs of coming to and traveling within the U.S.

Artists will have two opportunities to apply for funding.

Hello friends,

I am ecstatic to report that thanks to the generosity of so many of you, including some true angels, we have made our Kickstarter goal for globalFEST, with a few days left in the campaign.  Although we now have the comfort of knowing everyone’s pledges will indeed become donations, I encourage those of you who haven’t yet given to still make a contribution.  With your donation of $50 or more, you get a ticket to the January 8 extravaganza along with a digital mixtape, and at higher levels you get our first ever t-shirt, special VIP access…you can even introduce an artist during the festival if you give enough!  Everything we raise will be reinvested back into making it the best globalFEST yet.  Plus, if we raise enough, we’ll add more to the globalFEST Touring Fund, to build on the support we got from the Ford Foundation, helping even more globalFEST alumni bands apply for tour support to get them to new markets across the United States, and extend the impact of their showcases. For those of you who like free shows, my next show in the David Rubenstein Atrium will be a special concert on Thursday, November 17 by vocalist Mimi Goese & mutanttrumpeter Ben Neill: Songs for Persephonbased on a piece they originally premiered at BAM’s Next Wave festival. I still vividly remember the first time I saw Mimi Goese when her band Hugo Largo shared a bill with John Zorn at the Cat Club more than 20 years ago – her theatricality and unique voice continue to resonate.  I’m personally bummed that I will be out of town for this show, so I’m counting on YOU to see the show and report back to me. http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium-mimi-goese-and-ben-neill-nov-17-2011

On December 1, you won’t want to miss the long-awaited return of the Raymond Scott Orchestrette – devoted to preserving and extending the legacy of the visionary cartoon jazz and electronic music pioneer. http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium-raymond-scott-quintette-dec-1-2011

Thanks to so many generous supporters, we have met our fundraising goal!  Now it would be amazing to raise additional funds to make this year's edition the best yet and support our globalFEST touring fund. The gFTF which was only recently announced, has received an incredibly enthusiastic response from artists who are ready to tour in the U.S. but need funding to make their tours viable.  We realize how important this initiative is and hope to raise funds to support more groups.  Meaning more international music in cities and towns all over the country.

Can you help support globalFEST?

Please consider joining the globalFEST kickstarter campaign in its last 3 days.  You'll be rewarded with all sorts of incentives, and if you contribute at the $50 level and you'll get a ticket to globalFEST (already a $40 value) on January 8, 2012, the creatively curated bright spot for music lovers and party - turning winter doldrums into a multi-continent romp on three-stages at Webster Hall in the East Village. With one ticket, festival-goers  can see twelve acts in one night, representing diverse global styles. gF is a not-for-profit organization and is completely volunteer run.

More info on the globalFEST Touring Fund (gFTF), funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation, is below.

In 2010, globalFEST incorporated into its own non-profit organization.

Over 8 festivals, globalFEST has become one of the US's most highly anticipated and diverse cultural events and an essential catalyst for the world music field in North America.

Greetings from India. I forward this along so you can add: "Thanks for $5 discounts on tickets to see a dozen of the world's best artists at globalFEST " to your Thanksgiving pre-meal appreciations...but you have to act before then. The deadline is almost here. Forget Black Friday, and stock up early on tickets - to give the gift of world music for the holidays.

And a special treat, the rapidly rising French star Zaz has just been added to the bill. Check her videos out online. She's fantastic!

On a side note: next Wednesday, Dec 1, I'm presenting the return of the Raymond Scott Orchestrette at the David Rubenstein Atrium at 830 as part of Target Free Thursdays. It's been a while since we've heard from them - the powerhouse repertory band playing the music of the pioneering jazz/cartoon music composer and soothing sounds of electronic innovator Raynond Scott. This will be a treat.

See you soon.

Velvet-voiced French vocalist Zaz began singing the blues (and Basque roots music) in Bordeaux.  She soon found herself setting Montmartre street corners dancing, bringing Piaf to Siberia, and playing for Colombian salt miners and enthusiastic Egyptians as the front woman for several groundbreaking, globally informed French bands. Her songs sweep in all her worldly influences - from Latin vibes to Middle Eastern beats - all linked by her husky, rich voice and quirky, grooving interpretive sensibility. Hey all,

I’m back in town from my first trip to India, where I went to the NH7 Weekender festival in Pune thanks to the encouragement of Ali Sachedina and Girish Raj of Kinetic Management, spending additional time in Mumbai and Jaipur, Rajasthan. Special thanks to Kailash Kher, Salim Merchant and Siraj Khan of Musafir / Kawa Jaipur Brass Band for their hospitality.   I’ve been slightly fixated on autotuned Rajasthani pop since I’ve been back – you can find some choice videos on my Live and Actives Tumblr http://liveandactivecultures.tumblr.com/.

Raymond Scott Orchestrette and other Target Free Thursdays shows

Now that I’m back, there’s a ton to tell you about.  First, we have some great free shows coming up at the David Rubenstein Atrium as part of Target Free Thursdays.  This Thursday, Dec 1, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of jazz/electronic music visionary’s band the Raymond Scott Quintette with a rare reunion show of the Raymond Scott Orchestrette (featuring an old friend from Haverford College, George Rush, on bass).  If you don’t know Raymond Scott’s name, you certainly have heard classics like Powerhouse, which was a primary source for Carl Stalling’s scores to classic Looney Toons cartoons later revived by Ren & Stimpy, as well as referenced by everyone from They Might be Giants, Don Byron and Soul Coughing.  And very little known fact, my uncle Red Solomon played with Raymond Scott Orchestra for a short period….

Coming up on December 15 in the Atrium, we’re excited to present the NY debut of black rock and psychedelic soul pioneers Kool & Together “who pick up where Hendrix’s Band of Gypsies left off.”  Don’t worry that you’ve never heard of them.  We hadn’t either until the folks at Heavy Light records, who we worked with on psychedelic gospel funk band The Relatives at Lincoln Center Out of Doors this summer, turned us on to them.  They recently reformed after 30 years and are likely to blow our collective minds.  Here’s a taste of their first show after being re-activated from Austin’s Continental Club just a few weeks ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOKFQTcrhdM

Keep your eyes out for other great free Atrium shows, including Ljova plus the Kontraband, Romashka, Tall Tall Trees and more, celebrating the release of his terrific new CD, Lost in Kino on Dec 22, Theo Bleckmann’s Hello Earth; The music of Kate Bush on Jan 5, and a special all-star celebration with Lucia Pulido and friends on Jan 22.  Check out http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium for complete listings.

Sola Rosa at SOB’s tonight

My friend John Hammond told me about a cool band playing at SOB’s tonight, Sola Rosa, who have been described as New Zealand’s answer to Thievery Corporation.  Color me intrigued.  They go on about 9:30, and I have a 2 pairs of tickets to give away to whoever asks me first (as long as it’s by 6 pm).  Hit me up if you want to go. And check out a track here: http://music.solarosa.com/ or check out this slightly creepy electro swing meets Dia de la Muerte video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYhkiBkqQj4

Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, Colin Quinn and more at Lincoln Center

This Monday, Lincoln Center will host a benefit for Baby Buggy, a non-profit founded by Jessica Seinfeld a decade ago.  The executive director, Katherine Snider, is married to George Schwimmer, another old friend from Haverford College, and they’ve allowed me to offer some tickets at a 25% discount ($150 instead of $200).  See the box below for info on how to get those.

DJ Acidophilus returns to Under the Radar Lounge

Finally, just a quick save the date – I’ll be djing once again at the Public Theater’s Under the Radar Lounge on Friday, January 13.  It’s free.  There’s an excellent band playing on the bill with me that needs to remain secret for a while.  But it will be fun.  And it’s free.  And now that Fabian and Derek live in Cali, I don’t dj that much.  Come.  It will be fun.  And it’s free.

Also this Thursday, there will be a special Turntable.FM session from 3:30 – 5:30pm where we’ll be spinning artists from the upcoming edition of globalFEST as well as choice faves from previous editions.  It’s a great chance to get to know this year’s artists, ask questions, find out more about the line-up and chat with your friends.  Sign in thru Facebook.  http://turntable.fm/globalfest   You can also check out our Spotify playlist – see below for info on that.  And most importantly – don’t forget to buy your tickets to globalFEST soon – tix are selling very well.  You don’t want to miss the international music event of the year.  With 12 artists on 3 stages in 1 night, globalFEST tickets also make GREAT holiday gifts….

Festival directors are Bill Bragin of  Acidophilus: Live & Active Cultures, Isabel Soffer of Live Sounds and Shanta Thake of Joe's Pub at The Public Theater.

Happy new year, friends.

2012 is beginning fast and furious, with so many great events happening in NYC, thanks to the annual Association of Performing Arts Presenters (APAP) annual conference.  A few things you should know about:

1 – Theo Bleckmann sings the Music of Kate Bush tomorrow night at the David Rubenstein Atrium. It’s part of Target Free Thursdays, admission is free and showtime is 8:30.  It’s gotten great press, like this NY Times review of an earlier version http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/24/arts/music/24theo.html, so I recommend you come extra early if you want to get in.

Other upcoming shows include multiple Juno award winning banjo master Jayme Stone’s Room of Wonders on Jan 12, and the amazing Colombian singer (and globalFEST alum) Lucia Pulido’s  special celebration on Jan 19 with Sebastian Cruz, Adam Kolker, and Stomu Takeishi, with special guests Dave Binney, Erik Friedlander, La Cumbiamba eNeYe (also globalFEST alums) and others.

Check out all the Atrium shows at http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium

2 – This Sunday is the 9th edition of globalFEST.  Tickets are selling really well, so I highly advise; DO NOT WAIT till the weekend to buy your tickets.  Seriously – buy your tickets soon! If you gave enough thru our Kickstarter campaign to earn a ticket, thanks again! Your ticket will be at the VIP/guest list entrance (closer to 3rd Ave).  If you purchased an advance ticket online thru Ticketmaster or any other way, they will be at Will Call at the main entrance (closer to 4th Ave).

A few new things this year, but keep scrolling for more details.

- for the first time, food will be available at Webster Hall from our new artist caterer, so you don’t need to miss a minute of the 5 hour extravaganza because you came late or needed to step out for dinner.  Doors at 6, showtime at 7, and we go till midnight – so you can keep your belly full, dance it off, and eat some more.

- we’re also selling a limited number of globalFEST t-shirts, along with artists CD’s, so bring extra cash ;)

- our friends at World Music Network have not only created an online Rough Guide to GlobalFEST, but they are also offering free download of their very tasty Introducing Africa compilation which you can download here: http://www.worldmusic.net/free

- if you aren’t tired after globalFEST proper, join us for an afterparty at Joe’s Pub.  Free admission and drink specials.  You might even get to hang with some of your favorite musicians from the night.

In addition to the Rough Guide, there have been a few other great online previews, including:

All Songs Considered’s “Getting ready for globalFEST”

NPR Music also put together this globalFEST audio mix www.npr.org/2012/01/03/144442821/the-mix-the-sounds-of-globalfest

The Star-Ledger wrote this: http://www.nj.com/entertainment/music/index.ssf/2012/01/globalfest_webster_hall.html

And the NY Times called globalFEST and Winter Jazzfest two of 2012’s most promising events http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/30/arts/music/pop-music-in-2012.html

3 – Speaking of Lucia Pulido, she will also be a guest singer with Lincoln Center Out of Doors alum, and now United States Artist Fellow Sxip Shirey, at Joe’s Pub on Saturday night at 9:30.  He’ll expand on his collaboration with digifiddler Todd Reynolds along with a string quartet with members of Luminescent Orchestrii, as well as a host of other special guests.  I wouldn’t miss it.

4 – Winter Jazz Fest brings 2 days and about 60 bands across 5 venues in the Village, including (le) Poisson Rouge, Kenny’s Castaways, Sullivan Hall, Zinc Bar and the Bitter End.  There are way too many amazing sets to list, but check out the line-up http://winterjazzfest.com/2012nycwinterjazzfest/2012schedule.html and I have no doubt you’ll find more than a few longtime favorites, and even more artists who have been on your list of people you’ve been meaning to check out.  With 1 and 2 day passes at $35 and $45, respectively, you almost can’t afford NOT to go…

5 – Under the Radar leads the charge for new theater from around the world, with shows at The Public, La Mama, HERE and elsewhere. In addition to all the great theater pieces, the nightly free UTR LuEsther Lounges at The Public offer performances by artists like Denizen Kane, globalFEST and Lincoln Center Out alums Red Baraat, the Wooster Group, and the Middle Collegiate Church gospel choir.

5.5 – Oh, and on Friday, January 13, GlobeSonic Sound System’s very own DJ Acidophilus makes a very rare solo appearance (though perhaps Billmo will stop by.)  There’s also a very cool band on the bill I can’t tell you about yet, but they are super fun, and I’m pulling out a bunch of Colombian tracks I picked up at Circulart in Medellin this fall for the occasion.  ‘Nuff said. http://www.undertheradarfestival.com/index.php?p=580

Sorry to those of you who didn't purchase tickets earlier. This is the quickest globalFEST has ever sold out.

Unfortunately, if you didn't already buy your tickets, I can't help you at this point.

If space opens up (some audiences come specifically for a single artist), we may open up some tickets for sales later in the night, but it all depends on crowd flow.

NPR's All Songs Considered will have detailed post-festival coverage, so keep your eyes out for that.

Those of you who do have tickets already, see below for important info re schedule, entrances, food, etc.

Hope to see many of you tomorrow night.

Hi friends,

What a wild week it's been with the APAP conference and globalFEST and all the intensity that come with that.

globalFEST wrap-up

First off, on behalf of the three globalFEST producers - Isabel Soffer, Shanta Thake and myself - a big thanks to everyone involved in globalFEST - all of you who bought tickets or supported us on Kickstarter as well as our funders Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the Ford Foundation: Tamizdat for handling our visas (and getting all the artists in!): Rock Paper Scissors for getting the word out to so many supportive media outlets; Danny Kapilian and his incredible production crew for making it run so smooth; all the volunteers; Bowery Presents and Webster Hall, everyone at Joe's Pub (Sara, Michele Patricia and Mark) for carrying so much of the load; and of course, all of the artists for sharing their music with everyone there. (And apologies to the many people I’m forgetting)

Whether you missed it entirely or just missed part of certain sets (because it's impossible to hear each of the dozen artists in their entirety,) you can now check out recordings of complete sets from this year (and 2011) on NPR's All Songs Considered: http://www.npr.org/series/globalfest/

Also check out this round-table wrap-up discussion: NPR Music's Anastasia Tsioulcas, NPR contributor and Afropop.org senior editor Banning Eyre, and Rob Weisberg of WNYC (who also hosts WFMU's Transpacific Sound Paradise) join Bob Boilen to revisit some of the highlights and favorite discoveries from this year's globalFEST:

globalFEST 2012: A World Of Amazing Discoveries - NPR All Songs Considered http://www.npr.org/2012/01/10/144917135/globalfest-2012-a-world-of-amazing-discoveries

"…this year's amazing array of talent was fresh and surprising, from the funked-out psychedelic grooves of Ethiopia (by way of Boston's Debo Band) to the Silk Road's joyously rollicking cross-cultural collaboration, to the atmospheric and haunting sounds of Wang Li, a solo Chinese jaw harp player.”

A few of the reviews for your perusal:

NY Times: A Night When All the World’s Onstage http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/10/arts/music/globalfest-at-webster-hall-review.html

“The world was fused at Globalfest on Sunday night. (At) the sold-out event at Webster Hall...the old image of world music as ethnomusicological finds — pure local styles directly imported from out-of-the-way places — has given way to a more worldly music, played by artists who self-consciously decide what to mix. They select from their own heritage and countless other possibilities; after all, they’ve got Internet connections.

Village Voice: globalFest Takes Webster Hall On A Too-Quick Trip Around The World http://blogs.villagevoice.com/music/2012/01/globalfest_webster_hall_january_8_review.php

My DJ Gig Tomorrow Night

One of the break-out hits of the festival, MAKU Sound System, will be back this Friday (Tomorrow) night at the Under the Radar Lounge at the Public Theater, playing a free set at 10:30 pm, with a dj very close to my heart, Acidophilus, spinning before and after their set. https://www.facebook.com/events/323330617689596/ I'll be spinning until about 2 am, so plenty of chances to come by.  It's free.

Target Free Thursdays Concerts at the David Rubenstein Atrium – Jayme Stone & Lucia Pulido

It’s short notice, but tonight at 8:30, the globe-trotting, 2-time Juno Award winning banjo player Jayme Stone plays as part of Target Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium. Admission is free.

http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium-jayme-stone-jan-12-2012

“The music is as spirited as its creator. It’s hard to imagine a room large enough to contain the talent that went into its making, or the varied sounds it surveys.” – GEORGIA STRAIGHT

Praised as the, “Yo-Yo Ma of the banjo" Jayme Stone brings his global banjo adventures to the David Rubenstein Atrium this January. He is a two-time Juno Award-winning banjoist and his brand new album, Room of Wonders, includes music from Norway, Sweden, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy and North America. The music is inspired by folk dances from around the world. Stone turned mysterious melodies into rocking tunes and crafted lush, edgy originals, with some of North America’s best acoustic musicians for companions.

Next Thursday, January 19, globalFEST alum Lucia Pulido celebrates a few milestones with a multi-faceted concert with collaborations that traverse both her roots in traditional Colombian music (fellow globalFEST alums la Cumbiamba eNeYe), and her more experimentalist and jazz leanings (Erik Friekdlander, Dave Binney and frequent collaborators Adam Kolker, Sebastian Cruz and Stomu Takeishi)

http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium-lucia-pulido-jan-19-2012

“Ms Pulido holds on to the rawness of the original melodies while giving them a sophisticated new context.” - The New York Times

Lucia Pulido is a Colombian singer with one of the richest voices on the international Latin American musical scene today. She has an experimental style marked by a distinct vocal sophistication, and has participated in various projects, ranging from traditional Colombian music to jazz and world music. Traditional genres such as cumbia and bullerengue from the Atlantic Coast, currulaos from the Pacific Coast as well as joropos from the Colombian Eastern Plains are the point of departure for her musical creativity. Lucía's vocal sophistication is enhanced in genres such as herding songs (cantos de vaquería), funeral laments (alabaos) and harvest chants (cantos de zafra), which give the singer the liberty to explore her voice fully.  For this special celebration and a commemoration of 30 years of creation Lucia Pulido will perform music from her old and new repertoire accompanied by some of the greatest musicians she has played with in NY since moving here in 1994.

Burnt Sugar and Vernon Reid were both among the nearly 30 artists who performed 11 years ago at an event I curated at Symphony Space: Wall to Wall Miles Davis – still one of my favorite events to have worked on.  Symphony Space streamed it about a week ago as they launched their new iPhone and Android apps, and I was thrilled to hear that the music was really as good as I remember. To highlight the release, the all-star Wall to Wall Miles Davis concert event will be once-again be streamed for 24 hours only beginning at noon on January 31st. It features scores of musicians in the 2001 performance that ran more than twelve hours on stage and touched upon every aspect of Davis' stunning career, And many of the artists who performed that day have become even more luminary members of the jazz scene. Check this out tomorrow. http://www.symphonyspace.org/live

Speaking of the Atrium, the wonderful singer-songwriter Meklit Hadero, who curated last year’s Resonance series featuring performances and conversation will be performing in NY next week at the Baryshnikov Arts Center, who have generously offered me a discount code to pass along to my friends:

Singer/songwriter Meklit Hadero performs songs from her critically-acclaimed album On a Day Like This… (2010).  Born in Ethiopia, raised in the U.S., and nurtured by San Francisco’s richly diverse arts scene, Ms. Hadero's music draws from a variety of influences: jazz, hip-hop, art-rock, and folk traditions from the Americas and East Africa.

There’s been more great press from globalFEST coming thru. I won’t include all of it, but these two articles were particular favorites:

http://www.popmatters.com/pm/review/153352-all-over-the-map-globalfest-2012/

"...the producers’ claim that that GlobalFEST offers “the best in world music” is no idle boast..."
"no matter the performer or the stage, the sound was excellent, production values high, and the sets began and ended on schedule. Would that more festivals were conceived as well and run as efficiently."

http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/touring/how-the-apap-conference-could-save-your-1005899352.story

"Globalfest launched our international touring career and is the most important show we've ever played."

Hi friends,

We have a fantastic double bill for you in the David Rubenstein Atrium this week as part of Target Free Thursdays, the The Nick Rolfe Project and Imani Uzuri’s new acoustic The Gypsy Diaries project.  Both Nick and Imani have put together all-star bands – can’t wait!  The performance is free and open to the general public. Seating is on a first come first served basis.  We expect it to be crowded – come early, have dinner and drinks at ‘wichcraft cafÃĐ.

http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/atrium-the-nick-rolfe-project-and-imani-uzuri

The Nick Rolfe Project featuring Ronny Drayton, guitar; Gene Lake, drums; Daniel Sadownick, percussion; and Chulo Gatewood, bass
Paying homage to some of his musical influences—think Herbie Hancock meets Sting meets Stevie Wonder meets Jamiroquai—singer/songwriter/keyboardist Nick Rolfe has developed a unique hybrid Jazz, Soul, Rock and Funk sound that defies confining him to a single category. Both as a leader and a sideman, Rolfe has toured extensively and worked with a range of outstanding artists such as Lizz Wright, Amel Larrieux, T.S. Monk, Omar, Russell Gunn, Benny Golson and many others. In addition to his musical work, Rolfe is an accomplished actor appearing on-screen with Academy Award winners Susan Sarandon and Ralph Fiennes in the Emmy Nominated, Golden Globe nominated HBO Film Doris and Bernard directed by Bob Balaban, and with Brooke Shields in the NBC series Lipstick Jungle.

Imani Uzuri’s The Gypsy Diaries with Marika Hughes, cello; Christian Ver Halen, acoustic guitar; and Kaoru Watanabe, Japanese flute
Vocalist/composer Imani Uzuri offer selections from her forthcoming new album The Gypsy Diaries, a lyrical spiritual soundscape, featuring vocals, violin, cello, acoustic guitar, Japanese flute, sitar and daf. Recently featured in The New York Times, Uzuri is an eclectic artist who creates and performs across various genres, including concerts, experimental theater, recordings, visual/ performance art and sound installations. Uzuri’s nomadic world travels to places from Morocco to Moscow and her interest in sacred music and experimentation is reflected in her various projects including her critically acclaimed debut album Her Holy Water: A Black Girl’s Rock Opera and in her collaborations with diverse artists such as Herbie Hancock, John Legend, Vijay Iyer, Wangechi Mutu, Sanford Biggers and Robert Ashley. Television appearances include David Letterman, BET and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and The Roots. New York Magazine has called her work “stunning.”

A few artists from previous editions of globalFEST have had some great news recently that we wanted to share.

Red Baraat on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts:

All Songs Considered’s Bob Boilen has become a huge champion of globalFEST (http://www.npr.org/2012/01/10/144917135/globalfest-2012-a-world-of-amazing-discoveries) and the band that probably did the most to turn him into a loyal supporter was NY’s own Red Baraat, who played in 2010.  Recently, the band stopped by the NPR offices in DC to perform a Tiny Desk COnsert, and this is what Bob had to sayâ€Ķ

http://www.npr.org/event/music/146691937/red-baraat-tiny-desk-concert?ps=mh_frimg3

Red Baraat is the best party band I've seen in years. The group plays rollicking funk music steeped in Northern India's wedding celebrations, with a dash of D.C. go-go beats and hip-hop. It's all driven by Sunny Jain's dhol, a double-sided barrel drum that hangs down low around his body.

If the drum is the messenger, the brass is the message. Uplifting melodies emanate from baritone and soprano saxophones, bass trumpet, trombone and sousaphone. This is a band that jazz lovers can appreciate and rock fans can dance to.

Red Baraat is based in Brooklyn, and has played the Monterey Jazz Festival and at Lincoln Center. I first saw the group at globalFEST 2011 on a tiny basement stage that barely contained the band physically and overwhelmed the audience emotionally. I heard a dozen bands that night, but Red Baraat was the one that stuck with me.

After the group's joyously noisy set at the Tiny Desk, a wide array of people — from our youngest interns to some of our oldest journalists — told me how much they loved Red Baraat. Of all the concerts that have come to my desk, this seemed to be the little-known band that won over the most hearts. I get the feeling that, for Red Baraat, 2012 is going to be a big, big year. - Bob Boilen NPR

A few years ago, we had the pleasure of presenting another NY band who are putting their own unique spin on South Asian music – Brooklyn Qawwali Party.  Along with the aforementioned Red Baraat, and the aforementioned Burnt Sugar, they have been invited to perform at Proctor’s Theater in Schenectady.  We’re very proud that they are one of the first recipients of a grant from the new globalFEST Touring Fund (gFTF), which helped offset their costs to play at Proctor’s and at Club Helsinki in Hudson, NY.  If you know anyone in NY’s capital region, send them alongâ€Ķ

"Burnt Sugar can be many things: lush, hypnotically psychedelic...avant garde orchestra, blazing funk band, and also a combination of the two." - New York Music Daily

In "Any World I'm Welcome To," Burnt Sugar subverts and lays claim to the Steely Dan songbook, with curation by guitar hero and conceptualist Vernon Reid.

Burnt Sugar the Arkestra Chamber is a sprawling band of musicians whose prodigious personnel allows to freely juggle a wide swath of the experimental soul-jazz-hip hop spectrum. "Arkestra Conductor Greg Tate says, "Burnt Sugar got the nerve to claim Sly Stone, Morton Feldman, Billie Holiday, Jimi Hendrix and Jean Luc Ponty as progenitiors. Our player-ranks include known Irish fiddlers, AACM refugees, Afro-punk rejects, unrepentant beboppers, feminist rappers, jitterbugging doowoppers, frankly loud funk-a-teers and rodeo stars of the digital divide."

The thrilling SpokFrevo Orquestra draws inspiration from frevo, an infectious century-old music of elaborate arrangements and indisputable deep roots, taking it from the alleys of Pernambuco and bringing it into the concert hall with blistering, jazz-influenced arrangements, virtuoso playing, and all the fire and frenzy of a street party. Fronted by musical director/saxophonist Maestro Spok, this 17-musician outfit—saxophone, trumpet, trombone, rhythm sections, bass, and guitar—reinvents tradition without subverting it.  http://www.vo-music.com/artiste.php?id=47&lang=en

If you ARE going to SXSW, I’ll be heading there on Friday, speaking on a panel at 3:30 pm that afternoon: Is There a Latin Alternative?

A Spanish-language band can gain instant access to the growing Hispanic audience and sponsors targeting that demographic by marketing themselves as "Latin". But how limiting is being marketed as a "Latin" band — even Latin alternative? Can bands and labels eliminate the need to "crossover" by avoiding the term altogether? Moderated by Judy Cantor-Navas, and including Tomas Cookman, Andres Levin, and Alejandro Franco.

Later that night, we are thrilled to bring the first-ever globalFEST showcase at SXSW at Speakeasy on Congress between 4th and 5th.

It’s an amazing line-up: Balkan Beat Box, Debo Band, Chicha Libre, MAKU SoundSystem, and Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang.  See below for details and hope to see you there.  And RSVP on FB – let us know you are coming to #gFSxsw, and invite other folks.

Jank! Tonight.

It’s a question of trust.  And community.  And friendship. And maybe a little bit of calculation.

About 12 years ago, Fabian Alsultany asked me if I wanted to be a guest dj at a party he was starting called GlobeSonic.  I hadn’t djed since college, and he certainly had never heard me spin.  We were friends, and he knew my taste from my work as a curator at SummerStage and Symphony Space.  And I think he figured, I had a good email list and would be able to bring some folks out.  And lo and behold, I started telling people I was a dj, came up with the name Acidophilus, shorthand for Live and ActiveCultures.  And for more than a decade, I have become a dj, spinning at festivals and nightclubs around the world.

About a year ago, after not playing trumpet for about 27 years, my dad sent me horn  so I could take part in some Balkan brass band workshops that Slavic Soul Party’s Matt Moran and Asphalt Orchestra and Balkan Beat Box’s Peter Hess were putting together.  I played about once a week (no practicing in between) and then this summer (though my friend Jill Sternheimer’s prodding, we invited James Brown’s sax master Pee Wee Ellis to one of our workshops, and he in turn invited my to sit in with him and Fred Wesley to play I Feel Good at Midsummer Night Swing.   I retired the horn during the rest of the summer and most of the fall, and then started playing in a Northeastern Brazilian workshop with Nation Beat’s Scott Kettner and Matuto’s Rob Curto, learning some forro, frevo, ciranda and more… Again, I didn’t practice in between.

But what I did do is tell people that I play trumpet.  So trusting, community-oriented friend that he is, Sxip Shirey calculated that I might tell a lot of people, and invited me to join him tonight and his Men of Jank at Barbes tonight to play on a tune.  “It’s jank,” he said. “It doesn’t have to be good.” Perfect.  I’m in.  So tonight, without Sxip or any of the other bandmembers – Ben Syverson, Don Godwin, Jeremy Dustin, Xavier, John Speck - ever having heard me play, I’ll be joining in on a song at Barbes at 10pm.  It’s small.  It will be hot and sweaty.  They’ll be passing the bucket for tips.  Come.  Be generous. With your ears, and your wallets. This isn’t the song I’ll be playing, but it can give you a taste of the jank: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOLMc-DSUMo

https://www.facebook.com/events/367402486627744/

Jank! is Sexy, brash, funky and ridiculous- "Like Harry Partch doused himself in Delta Blues then joined as resident composer at Motown" - Rob Hill. -with Sxip Shirey on mutant harmonica, eletronics and exploited sound devices, Don Godwin on Tuba, Ben Syversen on trumpet, Jeremy Gustin on drums, Xavier on vocals, special guest John Speck on trombone and a guest slot with Bill Bragin and his trumpet. Come on out and get yer Jank on!

Vlada Tomova’s Balkan Tales at Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium tonight

It’s a hard choice – cause earlier tonight at the David Rubenstein Atrium, the wonderful Bulgarian singer Vlada Tomova (who has sung with Sxip and the Luninescent Orchestrii and with Balkan Beat Box as part of the Bulgarian Chicks), will perform a free show at the David Rubenstein Atrium, starting at 8:30 pm.  You can get a taste of Vlada’s music here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRxJ8IuI0hs

http://atrium.lincolncenter.org/index.php/atrium-vlada-tomova

Thursday, March 22, 2012 at 8:30pm
Honoring tradition while embracing the present, Vlada Tomova’s Balkan Tales aims for the heart with earthy sophistication. Called a “Bulgarian vocal sorceress” and "one of the most exciting voices in the New York global music scene", Brooklyn's exquisite Bulgarian songstress carries haunting, otherworldly energy in her voice.Featuring some of New York’s finest instrumentalists, Balkan Tales brings modern soul to the Gypsy Balkan diaspora. Reaching far and wide for its tales, the group’s repertoire stretches from Tomova’s native Bulgaria to the rest of the Balkans to the Middle East, with flavors of India and Andalusia, recalling Bulgaria’s cultural origins shaped by ancient migrations.

In this concert, Balkan Tales will be joined by innovative sitarist Chris Rael and singers Valentina Kvasova and Shelley Thomas, who will conjure with Tomova the stark harmonies of a cappella village-style folk song.

globalFEST @ SXSW recap!

Building on our success in January as part of the APAP conference, we decided to expand the reach of globalFEST to infiltrate the indie-music world this year, thanks to the invitation of SXSW’s Todd Puckhaber and Alicia Zertuche.  Isabel Soffer, Shanta Thake and I, with expert project management from Joe’s Pub’s Sara Beesley, put together our first ever gFSxSW showcase.  Unfortunately, flight difficulties meant that Balkan Beat Box’s flight didn’t make it in time, but we had a killer line-up featuring Sierra Leone’s via Brooklyn King of Bubu Music, Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang, Queens/Colombian powerhouses MAKU Soundsystem, Brooklyn’s psychedelic cumbia faves Chicha Libre, and Boston’s Ethiopian funksters Debo Band.  Despite some horrific technical difficulties, the crowds were fantastic, and the bands all killed, getting great public and critical reception.  Here’s just a sample:

Spin picks Debo Band as one of the highlights of Friday night (along with Jack White and 50 Cent): http://www.spin.com/articles/best-sxsw-2012-friday-jack-white-50-cent-imperial-teen

the Boston-based crew rumbled through Ethiopian wedding songs and mighty, constantly evolving originals. Every hot blast of brass or well-placed outburst of strangled guitar combined to resemble a smartly tweaked, off-kilter version of what you might find in the Ethiopiques series. Tonight it all felt like a celebration: wild, unabashed dancing during every song, and hugging between friends and strangers alike in between”

AND one of the top 10 shows of SXSW overall! http://www.spin.com/articles/sxsw-2012s-top-10-shows?page=1

Debo also got featured in a cover story in their hometown Boston Globe http://articles.boston.com/2012-03-19/arts/31207881_1_globalfest-indie-rock-indie-rock

And NPR’s All Songs Considered continues to love them: http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2012/03/18/148865634/bob-boilens-sxsw-musical-and-not-so-musical-highlights-2012

PRI’s The World featured Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang: http://www.theworld.org/2012/03/janka-nabay-bubu-king-sierra-leone/

And they also reported on the entire line-up, warts and all… http://www.theworld.org/2012/03/sxsw-music-highlights-santigold-janka-nabay-hindi-zahra/

(also reprinted in the SF Bay Guardian) http://www.sfbg.com/noise/2012/03/17/sxsw-music-day-3-santigold-hindi-zahra-debo-band

MAKU Soundsystem played their asses off after one of the most unnecessarily long changeovers in the history of SXSW (the sound person was fired midway thru the show) and got a huge call for an encore.  The also kicked ass last night, opening for fellow Colombian stars, Bomba Estereo at Music Hall of Williamsburg.

The Austin Statesman picked Chicha Libre as one of their top highlights of the entire festival, most notably, their cumbia cover of the Clash’s “Guns of Brixton”: http://www.austin360.com/music/all-the-best-of-the-sxsw-music-festival-2246233.html?viewAsSinglePage=true

They also raved: “ the Brooklyn-bred, Peruvian-inspired group was still playing its psychedelic surf-rock cumbias at almost midnight, as dancers undulated in front of the stage and in a small balcony overlooking it. The accordionist at times seemed to have an Ethiopian jazz influence, while the reverberating guitar made me suddenly think about the hallucinatory and hilarious Alex Cox movie Straight to Hell, which starred members of the Pogues and Clash frontman Joe Strummer — and then Chicha Libre ended with a superbly atmospheric cover of the Clash’s “Guns of Brixton.” It was the perfect payoff for a night of wandering around downtown in search of transcendence.” http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/music/entries/2012/03/17/scene_report_friday_night.html

Ethan Lipton: No Place to Go at Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater

Speaking of trust and friendship, similar to the way I had championed Stew & the Negro Problem for years, leading to the commissioning of Passing Strangeļ and the resulting Broadway run, a Tony Award, and Spike Lee film, my longtime comrade-in-arms Shanta Thake, has been championing songwrite/playwright Ethan Lipton.

Last year, Shanta lead a program at Joe’s Pub to use funding from the NEA to commission Joe’s Pub artists to create theater pieces.  Along with Allen Toussaint, Lady Rizo, Angelique Kidjo and Toshi Reagon, naturally, Shanta picked Ethan Lipton.  Not only was the show a smash in its initial performances, but The Public ended up picking it up and making the resulting show, No Place to Go, part of its season.  I saw the final preview on Tuesday, and it opened last night to deservingly rave reviews.

Working with director Leigh Silverman (Well), Ethan has found a perfect outlet for his witty, heartfelt, and low-key, but incisive miniatures.  The piece delves into the choices working artists make every day to make art in our city, the struggles of on hard-working, everyday Americans in a country with no soft-cloud safety nets, and the impact on human lives of the vagaries of corporate capitalism.  It’s a smart, moving work.  You should see it

Check out the NY Times rave (“Immensely appealing”) http://theater.nytimes.com/2012/03/22/theater/reviews/ethan-lipton-in-no-place-to-go-at-joes-pub.html

as well as the Village Voice http://www.villagevoice.com/2012-03-21/theater/no-place-to-go-salutes-the-final-sandwich/

and then buy yourself a ticket.  And bring an underemployed artist friend. http://www.publictheater.org/component/option,com_shows/task,view/Itemid,141/id,1050

Michael Orlove joins the NEA

Speaking of the NEA, I’m super excited for my good friend Mike Orlove, a visionary curator in Chicago at the Department of Cultural Affairs, producing the Chicago World Music Festival, creating adventurous series at Chicago SummerDance, Millennium Park (including projects that have been imported to Lincoln Center Out of Doors) and at the Chicago Cultural Center.  Mike has just been named the director of presenting and artist communities at the National Endowment for the Arts. http://www.arts.gov/news/news12/Orlove-appointment.html  It’s a perfect appointment, well-deserved, and a welcome sign that our government’s arts funding remains in great hands of a smart, adventurous programmer committed to building community with a progressive global vision, following Mario Garcia Durham’s move to become head of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. Here’s what Chicago’s press has to say

Pardon the second email this week, but since there are a lot of artists subscribed to this list, and a lot of people who know artists, I wanted to spread the word about this really interesting opportunity.  The deadline is coming up at the end of the month. Keep reading for details (and note that this opportunity is for NYC artists only.)

All the best,

Bill

BTW – last night’s Jank-fest with Sxip Shirey & friends was a blast – they even let me (Made me?) improvise!  Thanks to everyone who came out.

A quick note to share information with you about the free, five-day professional development intensive that LMCC offers in collaboration with Creative Capital --The Artists Summer Institute, which combines our financial and management content with Creative Capital's strategic planning and communications content for a truly comprehensive program to help artists develop sustainable careers.

Artists describe it as life-changing --not only because of the training they receive, and act on,  but because they connect with a cohort of over 50 other artists to form an ongoing network of support that lasts far beyond the life of the program. We still follow their list-serve emails every day!

ASI is designed for NYC-based individual artists in the visual, performing and media arts whose focus is on creating new works, with a recent professional history of at least three years. We traditionally receive 300-400 registrations for the program so we choose final participants via lottery --however the largest applicant pool by far is visual artists, with far fewer performing artists. We could use your help reaching out to the music community!

The program will take place: May 9-13, and registration is currently open until 11:59pm on March 30.

The response from artist participants has been incredible and we hope you will have a moment to share this with your networks. Complete details are below.

Thanks for considering!

All best

Kay

It’s been a busy week and I’m sure I’m forgetting something as I rush to send this out, but a few quick things, without too much set-up

First, great free shows coming up at the Atrium at Lincoln Center including Palestinian oudist and vocalist Kamilya Jubran tomorrow.  And on April 19, the Unsound Festival returns, with the US debut of LXMP doing their take on Herbie Hancock’s seminal Future Shock, sharing the bill with Peaking Lights

MAKAN (Arabic for place)
Kamilya Jubran

Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 8:30pm
Target Free Thursdays
David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center

Kamilya Jubran is a Palestinian musician, composer, singer, and performer. From 1982 to 2002, Kamilya along with the Jerusalem based artist organization Sabreen represented a deep and dynamic artistic-political voice and process that created a new style of a modern Arabic song. In 2002 Jubran moved to Europe and has found herself constantly traveling between different places, cities, and countries. “I have been sharing spaces with others, sometimes by my own choice, and at other times by obligation. I am often faced with contradictory feelings: the space I move in grows wider and bigger, and possibilities multiply, whereas my private space gets narrower and narrower. I manage to find my own space in my melody.”

Makan was born under these circumstances. It consists of nine songs, based on contemporary Arabic texts with Jubran’s compositions. Preoccupied by the idea of ‘place’, Jubran examines the different spots in which each poet placed himself, while observing his world. Makan travels through the different places an individual can occupy in a lifetime.

This performance has been curated in collaboration with Zeyba Rahman.  Kamilya Jubran is presented in partnership with ArteEast to expand cultural exchanges and deepen understanding of cultures from the Middle East and North Africa regions. Ms. Jubran's appearance is supported by grant from the Ford Foundation administered by ArteEast.

Midsummer Night Swing 2012 announced!

Last week we announced the lineup for Midsummer Night Swing.  It’s going to be a truly amazing summer of dancing to swing, salsa and boogaloo, boogie-woogie, bhangra, tango, forrÃģ, mambo, zydeco, rock n roll,  and the Jacksons’ output from Motown to solo Michael and Janet, as well as Prince and the family.  Check out the complete schedule at www.MidsummerNightSwing.org – tickets are now on sale, as well as season passes, 6-night passes, and even newly created 4-dance Swing and Latin passes.  There was a nice piece in last week’s NY Times highlighting a few of our shows, including the US debut of The ABC&D of Boogie Woogie, featuring Charlie Watts on drums behind rollicking dual pianos, and a tribute to Luiz Gonzaga with the first US performances by Northeastern Brazil’s Mestres de ForrÃģ Nordestino: Biliu de Campina, Maciel Melo and Walmir Silva, along with the hot upstarts Quarteto Olinda http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/04/17/midsummer-night-swing-unveils-its-lineup/ The season brochure is a special custom design by our friend Juan Doe at Marvel Comics – it’s not back from the printers yet, but you can get a peek at our fun new look if you scroll to the image of our homepage below.

And sit tight, because we’ll announce Lincoln Center Out of Doors in just a few days (this WILL be a 2 email week – apologies in advance.)

globalFEST @ Bonaroo

Midsummer Night Swing wasn’t the only big festival announcement last week.  We’re also thrilled to let you know that GlobalFEST is going to Bonnaroo! We are grateful that Ashley Capps and his colleagues at Bonnaroo gave us the opportunity to curate one of the large tents on Saturday, June 9, to bring some of our globalFEST favorites.  It was a thrill seeing our line-up on the Bonnaroo homepage announcing: the Pedrito Martinez Group, Red Baraat, La-33, Debo Band, Khaira Arby & her Band, Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang, and Spectrum Road featuring Cindy Blackman-Santana, Jack Bruce, John Medeski and Vernon Reid. Read more at http://www.bonnaroo.com/globalfest-to-curate-world-music-tent/ and check out the videos on the globalFEST @ Bonnaroo youtube playlist http://www.bonnaroo.com/globalfest-to-curate-world-music-tent/.  And speaking of globalFEST, we’ve just opened submissions to perform at globalFEST NY in January, 2013.  Info is on the website www.globalFEST.org

The debuts of Lindigo and Orquesta Sarabia at the David Rubenstein Atrium

Speaking of world music, we have a two really special upcoming performances as part of Target Free Thursdays at the David Rubenstein Atrium.  One week from Thursday, May 3, the incredible maloya trance group Lindigo from Reunion Island will be making their NY debut, following their first US dates at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Festival International in Lafayette.  I was lucky enough to dj immediately following their Brazilian debut at Brazil’s Porto Musical festival in Recife about a year and a half ago (their trip was documented in the film Creole Cousins (Watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c93e80F4fyY)  Their energetic, kinetic funk was undeniable – and I have been hoping to bring them to NY ever since. Don’t miss it.  (And it’s free.   (Side note: one of my instrumental collaborators during my dj set was from the leader of Quarteto Olinda, Claudio Rabeca, performing at Midsummer Night Swing on July 13)

Lindigo (NYC Debut)

Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 8:30pm
Target Free Thursdays
David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center

Founded in 1999, Lindigo is one of the best in the Reunion Island music scene. With already an impressive experience (more than 150 concerts), Lindigo amazes with its explosive and stunning scenic representations. Combining the Maloya’s instrumental tradition with Madagascarian polyphonies, the band disrupts the rules of this kind of music. The result is a rhythmic joining of the Trance style, lyrical arrangement “volt-face”, physical involvement, interfaced with the personality of the lead singer. Lindigo follows the path of a very demanding musical performance, which expects them to push their limits higher and further.

And two weeks later, Cuban percussionist/composer/conceptualist Roberto Rodriguez unveils a new ensemble exploring the connections between jazz, Maurice el Medioni’s rai music, John Zorn’s Masada, and more.  He’s put together an amazing cross-section of some of NY’s finest musicians:

Orquesta Sarabia (Debut)

Target Free Thursdays
David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center

Just think of cooking up a spicy gumbo of Buena Vista Social Club doing the music of Nino Rota, Farid al-Atrash adding beautiful Cuban, Andalusian and Arabic melodies for that confused romantic who lives inside of us all. It’s what percussionist/composer Roberto Rodriguez calls "All World Music". “And that's me!” says Rodriguez. That's “Orquesta Sarabia”.  Known for his mashup of Cuban-Jewish music, Rodriguez continues to evolve as bandleader composer with the debut of “Orquesta Sarabia.” Longing for the arrival of this dream project, Rodriguez pushes his prolific and cultural reality for a fresh dynamic sound with new arrangements from Baila! Gitano Baila! (his 2004 CD on the downtown Tzadik label) as well as new compositions. With a cosmopolitan cast of talented New York musicians, they'll do a tribute ala Rodriguez, to the music of Maurice El Medioni, John Zorn as well as a tribute piece for two of the musical giants of Algeria, El Medioni and Dahmane El Harrachi, the composer of “Ya Rayah”, (The Passenger-Oh Emigrant). http://atrium.lincolncenter.org/index.php/atrium-orquestra-sarabia
Orquesta Sarabia features
Zafer Taweel- Oud, Canun, Darbuka, Voice
Igor Arias- Congas, Bongos, Voice
Amir ElSaffar- Santoor, Trumpet, Voice
Lefteris Bournias- Clarinet
Megan Weeder Gould- Violin
Hadar Noiberg- Ney, Flute

As if announcing www.MidsummerNightSwing.org, and globalFEST at Bonnaroo http://www.globalfest-ny.com/globalfest-bonnaroo last week weren’t enough, this week, we announced Lincoln Center Out of Doors www.LCOutofDoors.org.  It’s a really exciting (and dense) schedule, that should have a number of shows of interest, and a few head-scratchers, for all of you on this list.  For the detailed press release which might help put all the artists you’ve never heard of in context, click here. For the complete chronological listing, click here.  And feel free to ask me “what the hell were you thinking?”

For more details about globalFEST at Bonnaroo, check this link: http://www.rockpaperscissors.biz/go/globalFEST12/

Don’t forget that next Thursday, May 3 at 830pm at the David Rubenstein Atrium, we’ll present a FREE show by Lindigo, from the island of Reunion, on their first tour of the US. I saw them in Brasil at Porto Musical a year ago and they were astounding. Very excited they will be coming here following appearances at Festival International in Lafayette and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. To see a great live full-length concert video of the band in action, follow this link http://liveweb.arte.tv/fr/video/Lindigo_Mix_Box_Live/

Finally, since we now have snazzy new artwork for this season by Mark Alan Stamaty (who’s illustrations you might know from The Village Voice or his cover of Will Hermes’ book Love Goes To Buildings On Fire), we have some limited edition posters of last year’s design, by the legendary Globe Posters (this was their last job before the sold their letterpress!).  You can buy signed http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007MNW3S0 or unsigned copies: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007MNW41Q.  To see the new season’s design, check out our Facebook page, and why not Like us while you are there.  See if you can guess who all the drawings depict, too.  https://www.facebook.com/LCOutofDoors  Do the same with Midsummer Night Swing, whose artwork was a custom design by Marvel Comics! https://www.facebook.com/LCSwing

See you soon!

April 24, 2012 New York, NY—The schedule for this summer’s Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival, which runs from July 25 to August 12, was announced today by Bill Bragin, Lincoln Center’s Director of Public Programming. 100 free performances will take place across the plazas of Lincoln Center.  Seventeen premieres and debuts highlight the three weeks of this latest edition of one of the country’s longest-running, free, outdoor festivals.

On opening night, July 25, everyone’s invited to the party with the man who wrote and produced the music that defined popular dance in the 1970s, 80s and beyond, Nile Rodgers. Rodgers gathers together the CHIC Organization, some of that era’s—and today’s—leading musicians, to get Le Freak on at Damrosch Park.  Opening the evening, DJ KS*360, aka hip-hop DJ, dancer, choreographer, and poet Kwikstep, joined by members of his Full Circle Souljahs musicians and dancers, offers up 70s funk, 80s soul/R&B, Afrobeat, and disco from New York’s basements, rooftops, apartments, and dance clubs to create a giant block party in the Park, BEYOND THE GROOVE. Kwik provides “Soulutions” because he says, “good music always has the answer to your questions and the Soulutions to your problems.”

Said Bill Bragin, “Active engagement and participation are essential to many of this summer’s programs.  A number of the performances move off of the stages and into Lincoln Center’s plazas, relying on the audience’s involvement to complete the event.  In addition, two key events—one also happening this summer, the Olympics, the other which took place 40 years ago, “Soul at the Center”—were important touchstones for this summer’s presentations, and both are about creating a space where a multiplicity of cultures, ideas and expressions are shared and celebrated.”

Lincoln Center Out of Doors 2012 is sponsored by Bloomberg and PepsiCo.

Nothing like zooming into the summer. There are so many special events coming up, it's hard to even know where to to start.  So let's start with tonight!

Midsummer Night Swing: Dancing 101s @LCAtrium

Some of my friends are great dancers. Some of you rock back and forth hugging like you're at the junior high prom.  Maybe this will be the summer you step your game up a bit...and if it's too intimidating to take your first dance class outside at Midsummer Night Swing in Damrosch Park, we have 3 special opportunities for you to kickstart your summer dancing.

TONIGHT and for the next 2 Wednesdays, Midsummer Night Swing and the Young Patrons of Lincoln Center (YPLC) will offer free Dancing 101 dance classes at the David Rubenstein Atrium.  It's a great opportunity to pick up some swing and salsa basics to make the rest of your summer on the swing dance floor even more fun!  We have some truly excellent teachers and djs, plus drink specials to help give you a little liquid courage.

June 13: Salsa

June 20: Swing

Dance instructor: Spencer Weisbond teaches lindy hop

More Midsummer Night Swing @LCAtrium: Cajun and Swing

Midsummer Night Swing is also proud to host 2 free concerts at Target Free Thursdays at the Atrium, to ramp up to the summer.

Tomorrow night, Feufollet, the young Cajun sensations from Lafayette, Louisiana, make a rare NY appearance.  Steeped in the tradition, but bringing a youthful indie spin of their own  (they grew up with GIVERS), Feufollet were nominated for a Grammy last year, and are continuing to push new boundaries.  Check out this great feature from Garden and Gun: http://gardenandgun.com/article/cajun-fire-feufollet.  It’s a great warm-up for July 6th zydeco show with Geno Delafose

Feufollet

Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 8:30pm

Target Free Thursdays

David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center

Deathbed ballads meet glockenspiels and omnichords. Cajun French choruses are written on iPhones. Indie-rock vibes invade Acadian archives. Welcome to the world of Feufollet, a band both deeply rooted in the francophone soil of Louisiana and pushing boldly into unexplored yet utterly natural varieties of Cajun experience. Though famous for their renditions of heartbreaking songs and rollicking tunes, the quintet breaks new ground on En Couleurs (Feufollet Records; June 8, 2010) featuring originals that draw on deep roots tempered by a cutting edge of contemporary life.

And save the date for Thursday, June 21, when Boilermakers Jazz Band bring their highly danceable hot jazz and swing http://atrium.lincolncenter.org/index.php/atrium-2012-boilermakers

Midsummer Night Swing season kick-off!

Of course, all this is just a warm-up for the kick-off to Midsummer Night Swing proper, which starts 3 weeks from last night (gulp!)  Of course we have plenty of swing (Nelson Riddle Orchestra, Meschiya Lake & Dem Little Big Horns, Glenn Crytzer's Blue Rhythm Band, Harlem Renaissance Orchestra and Charlie Watts' ABC&D of Boogie-Woogie), and salsa (Orquesta Broadway's 50th Anniversary celebration, Johnny Colon, Mambo Legends Orchestra with Cita Rodriguez, Yoko La Japonesa Salsera and Nayibe la Gitana paying tribute to Celia, La Lupe and Graciela), but there's also zydeco with Geno Delafose, cumbia with Celso Piņa, a forro tribute to Luiz Gonzaga with Quarteto Olinda and more, tango with Leonardo Suarez Paz' Cuartetango, the Losers Lounge tribute to the Jacksons vs. Prince, a celebration of the 15th anniversary of DJ Rekha's Basement Bhangra with DCS, and break-out rock 'n' roller JD McPherson (#1 on Billboard's Heatseeker chart, and appearing on Conan O'Brien TONIGHT!).   Plus, two special after hours silent disco sessions, with NY Night Train's Jonathan Toubin and the Freedom Dance Party.

Individual tickets are on sale, and if you plan on coming more than once, you can save some money by buying season-passes, 6 night passes or new 4-dance Swing or Salsa passes.  You can use those for 2 entries in one night, so even if you only plan on coming 2 times with a dance partner, it's a great way to save some $$$. www.MidsummerNightSwing.org

globalFEST at BONNAROO!

http://lineup.bonnaroo.com/events/2012/06/09/

I couldn't be more excited to head down to the farm in Manchester, TN this weekend for Bonnaroo.  Amidst artists like Radiohead, Phish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beach Boys, Alice Cooper, Bon Iver, Skillrex, and the Roots, we're thrilled to have been asked to curate The Other Tent on Sat, June 9, with some of our favorite global sounds.  In addition to a daytime chock full of Sierra Leone via Brooklyn's Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang (featuring members of Skeletons and Gang Gang Dance), Ethiopian groovemonsters Debo Band (getting ready to drop their Sub Pop debut, produced by Gogol Bordello's Tommy T), Mali's Khaira Arby & her band, Colombian salsa powerhouses La-33, and the funky bhangra brass of Red Baraat, we'll also take over the tent late night with Vernon Reid, John Medeski, Jack Bruce and Cindy Blackman-Santana's tribute to Tony Williams' Lifetime, Spectrum Road, and then close it out with an extended SuperDescarga with Cuban percussion master Pedrito Martinez, fresh from opening for Galactic, playing at Mountain Jam and the Great GoogaMooga) and loads of surprise collaborators.  If you are down at Bonnaroo - find us at the tent, and make sure you spread the word with #gFEST #Bonnaroo.

The Return of DJ Acidophilus

I've got not 1, not 2, but 3 big dj gigs coming up...they may be my only gigs of the year, so hope you can make at least one of them.

On Wed, June 13, very happy to have been asked to spin as part of Nublu's 10th Anniversary - I'll be on a bill with globalFEST alums and Nublu institutions Forro in the Dark.  I'll spin an early set at about 1030 (after that night's Salsa Dancing 101 @LCAtrium) and then Greg Caz will take his regular spot back over.  Nublu's been one of NYC's most important laboratories of hyphenated global-dance-groove-jazz-whatever sounds for a decade, and I'm looking forward to being back there (and they are back to their Ave C and 5th Street home) http://www.nublu.net/anniversary/index.html

GlobeSonic Sound System reunites

My GSS brethren, Fabian Alsultany and Derek Beres, who have ventured west to Santa Monica, will both be back in town, and along with percussionist Duke Mushroom, we'll have 2 great free parties for your dancing pleasure.

http://queensartexpress.com/festival-calendar/qax-after-party-w-globesonic-sound-system/

On Friday, June 15, we'll be in Long Island City for Queen Art Express (QAX) spinning a free afterparty at Currency, following an evening of visual art installations organized around the theme “What If We Re-Made U.S. Economic Policy?” featuring new collaborative work by Leslie Alfin, Theresa Byrnes, Chanel Kennebrew and Toshi Reagon. http://queensartexpress.com/festival-calendar/what-if-we-re-made-u-s-economic-policy/

And on Saturday, June 16, we return to Riverside Park South's Pier I for our 8th annual marathon dance party - and  this is our longest set yet, from 2:30 to 10:30 pm.  Come early and bring the kids.  Have a cocktail as the sun sets over the Hudson River. Dance with thousands of revelers as the party really heats up once the sun goes down and the glowing hula-hoops come out.  But one way or another, hope to see out there.  It’s FREE!   https://www.facebook.com/events/292483424172552/

Alright, I've said too much.  See you soon. (and don't forget to check www.LCOutofDoors.org to start planning your late July/August cultural life.)

Back from Bonnaroo with the globalFEST crew.  My first time there, and it’s an incredible festival – beautifully produced and curated, wonderful vibe, great people.  Big thanks to Ashley Capps and ACEntertainment and Superfly Productions for the invite and Paul Dalen and the crew in The Other Tent for taking such good care of us.  And of course, to all the gFEST Bonnaroo bands: Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang, Debo Band, Khaira Arby & Her Band (who the NY Times said delivered some of the “day’s best funk” – and who you can see at Lincoln Center Out of Doors on Aug 1), La-33, Red Baraat, Spectrum Road, and Pedrito Martinez Group and his special guest collaborators John Medeski and New Orleans’ Stooges Brass Band (who you ‘ll see at Lincoln Center Out of Doors on July 26.)

Photographer Kevin Yatarola, who has been documenting globalFEST AND Bonnaroo (AND Joe’s Pub) beautifully for many years, took a lot of shots.  He’s still getting his gallery together, but here are a few dozen images to give you a taste of what went down: http://kebya.photoshelter.com/gallery/globalFEST-at-Bonnaroo-2012-TEMPORARY/G0000Rjl7w06kur4/C0000JZco0.M_dAc

I had a blast being back at Nublu on Wednesday night to dj for their 10th anniversary celebration.  Just a reminder that we have 2 FREE GlobeSonic Sound System parties this weekend.  Fabian and Derek are back in town from Santa Monica for the weekend, and as always, Duke Mushroom will join us on percussion.

It was great waking up to some love for GlobeSonic’s 8th annual pier party in the NY Times today.  Here’s what they had to say:

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/15/arts/dance/dance-parties-on-the-hudson-and-in-prospect-park.html

Dance Parties on the Hudson and in Prospect Park

New York’s dance music scene has thrived since well before the days of disco. Its clubs have always seemed to flourish even as the city’s fortunes — cultural, economic and otherwise — have ebbed and flowed.

Of course, many of us don’t feel quite at home among the trend-savvy young adults who populate the city’s clubbing set. We who might otherwise be inclined to a bit of booty shaking now and then can feel intimidated by some of the trappings of the night life.

For amateur hoofers who would rather avoid the guest lists and velvet ropes, the expensive cocktails and vampirical hours, there are two enticing options this weekend in Riverside Park South on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Both are part of the Riverside Park Fund’s Summer on the Hudson series and take advantage of the recently renovated Pier 1 complex between 68th and 72nd Streets. The pier, which shoots a good hundred yards out but feels as if it were halfway to New Jersey, gives the rather glorious feeling of floating in the middle of the river.

Starting on Saturday afternoon, the D.J. collective GlobeSonic Sound System will host a free marathon dance party, its eighth such annual event, featuring a solidly cosmopolitan mix of sounds from across the planet. The collective’s stated mission is to stimulate the mind as much as the body by emphasizing the shared musical traits of disparate traditions.

(GlobeSonic Sound System Dance Party, Saturday, 2:30 to 10:30 p.m.; Let’s Dance!, Sunday, 6 to 9 p.m.; Pier 1 at 70th Street; (212) 870-3070; riversideparkfund.org.)

And here are all the details for tonight, for our gig in Long Island City as part of Queens Art Express.  Come early to join a group sing with Toshi Reagon.  Rumor is that Morley will be joining her too.

Speaking of globalFEST, scroll below to find out about the latest news, including the still-open call for submissions for 2013, and even sooner, the special New York day we curated for Paris’ Festival d'ile de France.  It’s a spectacular setting to celebrate New York’s diasporic music with some of our favorite artists, so if you are like me and do most of your travelling AFTER Labor Day, maybe you can join us in France on September 9.
