Hi everybody,
The AID speaker series kicks off on Friday, June 10th with a talk by the eminent Gandhian activist Himanshu Kumar.
Himanshu Kumar has been working for the last 17 years with the tribals in the Indian State of Chattisgarh
and has been in the news in the past year trying to save the lives of the tribals caught up in the violence
between the Maoists and the Indian State. He will share with us his unique perspective on the triangular war
between the Maoists, the Indian State and the Tribals. The talk is free and open for all.

Please join us today for his talk at 6:30 PM at the David Lawrence Hall, University of Pittsburgh.

AID Pittsburgh speaker series

Triangular war between the State, the Naxals, and the Adivasis

What: Talk by Himanshu Kumar - "Triangular war between the State, the Naxals, and the Adivasis"

Where:  David Lawrence Hall 121

When:   Friday, June 10, 2011 at 6.30 pm

Himanshu Kumar, a Gandhian human rights activist from Meerut, has been working in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh for the past 17 years, in the midst of an old triangular war between the State, the Naxals, and the Adivasis split from within by the infamous government-sponsored Salwa Judum. He is also the prime mover of Vanvasi Chetna Ashram (VCA), an organization that has been serving as a nerve-connection between Adivasis and an indifferent State. As the state-sponsored conflict flared up in Chhattisgarh, Himanshu Kumar was propelled into saving the very lives of the people. Caught between state terror and the violence being waged in the name of the people, Dantewada and other parts have been marred by murders, rapes, arson, torching of villages, abductions, detentions and other brutalities. Himanshu Kumar, VCA and a few others have been instrumental in bringing to light the brutalities unfolding in the hinterlands and boondocks of Chhattisgarh.

Subject: ACTION Alert: Call or Fax Odisha officials to stop violence against the people and destroying their farms
reetyarora
Send Email Send Email

Please forward widely! Please report all action you take here: Google Spreadsheet under the right category.

Dear Friends,

Recent development in Dhinkia and Gobindpur areas in Odisha is extremely disturbing. The armed intimidation and threat of violence displayed by the Odisha police in an effort to acquire land for South Korean Steel company POSCO in Jagatsinghpur is a shame on our democracy.  Thousands of residents of Dhinkia and Gobindpur, including several hundred children, have been peacefully lying on the ground in the searing heat to protect their homes, lands and livelihoods as the police continues to destroy the betel vines. We have seen similar incidents in Singur and Nandigram before which ended up taking lives of several innocent farmers, small land-owners and landless laborers dependent on the local farms for their livelihood. This is an instance of institutional corruption against the people.

We have to act immediately to stop the imminent violence and lend our support to peaceful protest by residents Dhinkia and Gobindpur. Please do all [or at least one of the below action].

1. Call the following people and ask them to withdraw the police force immediately:

1. Sonia Gandhi: (91)11-23014161, (91)11-23012656

2. Naveen Patnaik: (91)674-2531100, (91)674-2531500

3. Superintendent of Police, Debadutta Singh. (91)94370-94678

4. Jagdish Tytler, Odisha congress party in-charge, (91)9811044164 [come out against the land acquisition forcefully].

Also, email: soniagandhi@..., cmo@..., manmohan@..., dmjsp@..., tytler@...

2. Send SMS to SP & Collector to stop using force against people. (91)94370-94678 & (91)94370-38401. Sample: "Don't use force or violence against residents Dhinkia and Gobindpur. There are women and children in the area and we are extremely concerned for everyone's safety".

3. Sign the petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/posco/petition.html

4. Send a fax: Sonia Gandhi: (91)1123018651, Odisha CM: (91)6742535100, Governor: (91)6742536582, Collector: (91)6724220299 or reply to me with your signature [name and city/country] and I will send a fax in your name.

Please act immediately and show your solidarity with the people's movement.

In Solidairty,

AID Volunteers

reetyarora
Send Email Send Email

Dear all,

Just to follow-up on the Action Alert of a couple of days back. After a four-day break for a local festival, a thousand-strong police force under the orders of the Govt. of Orissa is set to resume land acquisition for the POSCO project in the villages of Dhinkia and Gobindpur from Friday (17th June). Reports are that the police intend to first destroy the betel-vines that the people cultivate, and then to forcibly displace the people themselves from their lands. Dhinkia and Gobindpur account for about two-thirds of the land required for the POSCO project.

Remember that this is a project that would rob almost 120 villages, and a fishing community of around 20,000 of their livelihoods for little or no compensation. Remember that two government-appointed committees independently found that the clearances granted to the project were illegal, in violation of both environmental and Forest Rights law; there are two legal cases pending in the Orissa High court, and a criminal complaint against the District Collector. Remember that over 70% of the villagers of Dhinkia and Gobindpur signed gram sabha resolutions against the project, imposing not just democratic pressure, but legal obligations on the government that it never met.

It's profoundly disturbing that it comes to this- the bodies of 2000 unarmed men, women and children lying in the scorching sand to defend what their democratically-elected government has refused to; their right to their land.

In the last week or so, the issue has gained that critical amount of media coverage when sustained public pressure could make a difference. None of the actions mentioned below will take more than 15 minutes of your time, but could be crucial in building public pressure in the run-up to Friday:

2. Send an SMS to SP & Collector to stop using force against people. (91)94370-94678 & (91)94370-38401. Sample: "Don't use force or violence against residents Dhinkia and Gobindpur. There are women and children in the area and we are extremely concerned for everyone's safety".

3. Sign the petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/posco/petition.html

4. Send a fax:
Sonia Gandhi: (91)1123018651, Odisha CM: (91)6742535100, Governor:
(91)6742536582, Collector: (91)6724220299 or reply to Somu Kumar (somukumar@...) with your signature [name and city/country] and he will send a fax in your name.

Do forward this to your respective chapters, and any other mailing lists you can think of.

In solidarity,

It is a recognition of AID's sustained involvement in a wide range of social causes, with the selection not based on application but by the suo moto choice of the jury of eminent people. We are glad that the profile of AID for the award portrays the breadth and depth of the efforts of AID and its partners in India, covering both nirman and sangharsh - the constructive work for sustainable development and the struggle for people's rights and systemic change. This is captured particularly well in these two lines:

"From helping organic farmers in the Sunderbans, to teaching underprivileged kids in Tamil Nadu, from encouraging citizens to file RTIs to funding NGOs that fight corruption, from waste management in Bangalore to offering flood relief in Murshidabad, it is involved in diverse activities."

"In the close reading of unfolding contemporary struggles, whether for land, water or livelihood, or in powerful statements against atrocities, AID has emerged as a strong civil society voice, expressed in a plethora of small movements and campaigns in various parts of the country."

We would like to think that the recognition is for the kind of work described above; hundreds of organizations and movements are doing this work and the selection of AID is simply as a representation of this work. We hope that this recognition gives more strength to our efforts, more energy to our supporters, and most importantly helps in amplifying the voice of the people struggling for their livelihood and rights. We are also aware that any recognition also places additional responsibility to live up to higher expectations, and we seek your increased involvement to make that possible!

Please become a Sustaining Donor today by signing up for a monthly pledge, so we can continue our efforts towards a better India.

In Solidarity,
AID Volunteers

Profile of AID for the award:

For this NGO, all roads lead to India

TNN | Sep 20, 2011, 06.56AM IST
NEW DELHI: 'Dil hai Hindustani' is a phrase that best sums up Association for India's Development's vast network of workers and volunteers for whom all roads lead to India. The much-needed funds are raised abroad but channeled to a staggering sweep of projects within the country. From helping organic farmers in the Sunderbans, to teaching underprivileged kids in Tamil Nadu, from encouraging citizens to file RTIs to funding NGOs that fight corruption, from waste management in Bangalore to offering flood relief in Murshidabad, it is involved in diverse activities.

AID is also at the forefront campaigning to free Binayak Sen, protesting against Dow Chemicals and calling for a debate on BT Brinjal. Among many others, Arvind Kejriwal's NGO Parivartan was supported by AID in 2008 to pursue the RTI campaign. The jury voted for AID because they "do very good work" as Jairam Ramesh said and because "they encourage young people to get involved," according to Nandan Nilekani.

"Working with AID was an eye-opener," says activist Souparna Lahiri. A resistance campaign expert involved in multiple small movements, Lahiri says AID volunteers are deeply involved and "willing to understand where they are putting their time and money and learn from it" . "For instance, during the forests rights movement, they were in constant touch with me, on the whys and why-nots of the issue, the problems and challenges," says Lahiri, an AID associate since 2006. "As a result, I developed clarity on the impact of my work as well, whether things could be done in a different way and so on," he adds.

Going by the reach that the low-profile fundraiser has managed since its inception in 1991 in the US, AID is an idea warmly embraced by its donors and recipients. With 36 chapters in the US, and about 10 supporting ones within India (set up by volunteers who have returned), AID is wholly a chapter-led organization. This essentially means that each chapter, whether in a city in the US or the one in Australia, raises funds for projects the chapter chooses, routing the donations through a number of core AID funds.

It interestingly has a Jeevansathi fund which is meant to serve committed persons who chuck plush jobs and cushy lives to throw themselves into the task of nationbuilding back in India. AID's group of 'saathis' and 'jeevansathis' is the network's foot soldiers fully engaged in social work who lend their expertise to grassroots projects.

In the close reading of unfolding contemporary struggles, whether for land, water or livelihood, or in powerful statements against atrocities, AID has emerged as a strong civil society voice, expressed in a plethora of small movements and campaigns in various parts of the country.

It has had its share of stardust too. AID legend has it that director Ashutosh Gowariker visited Bilgaon, a tribal village in the Narmada valley where AID supported a power generation project, while scripting for Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Swades. He spent time with AID's Aravinda Pillalamarri and its founder Ravi Kuchimanchi, who were closely involved with the Bilgaon project.

The network is quick to set up specific disaster funds such as Cyclone Aila Relief Fund or Bihar Floods Relief Work or most recently sending relief after the Murshidabad floods in West Bengal. The approach to nation building, "based on compassion and integrity", say the organizers, has a multiplier effect. AID has spread its donor network across 48 cities in the US, Canada, Australia and India and supports projects in 18 states.

Carnegie Mellon University presents:

A Conversation with Dr. Vandana Shiva

Thursday, November 3, 2011

12:30-1:30 pm

University Center, Connan Room

Light refreshments will be served.

Sponsored by the Center for History & Policy, the Office of the Vice Provost for Education, Student Affairs, and the Steinbrenner Institute

An internationally acclaimed eco-feminist, physicist, and philosopher, Dr. Shiva is well known for her work establishing the rights of Mother Earth in partnership with the United Nations.

Dr. Vandana Shiva, named one of the seven most-influential women in the world by Forbes magazine in 2010, has focused on biotechnology and the patenting of life-forms. A frequent target of her criticism has been the multi-national corporation Monsanto, who has created its own brand of seeds, genetically modified to tolerate the pesticide Roundup, also a Monsanto product, allowing farmers to spray their fields to kill the weeds while leaving the crop unharmed. Today, “Roundup Ready” crops account for about 90 percent of the soybeans and 70 percent of the corn and cotton grown in the United States. But farmers sprayed so much Roundup that “superweeds”, able to resist the pesticide, quickly evolved. Shiva has been quoted as saying "instead of rewarding them [Monsanto] with a patent, they should be punished for polluting our food chain."

In the late 1980s, Dr. Shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology which concentrates on the biotech and patenting issues, and in 1991 she founded Navdanya, a national movement in India to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources, especially native seeds.

In the words of writer David Kemker, Dr. Shiva is now "focused on preventing imperialism over life itself." "I don't want to live in a world where five giant companies control our health and our food," Dr. Shiva said. Her work has resulted in the conservation of more than 2000 varieties of rice in India.

For Dr. Shiva, ecology and feminism are "inseparable" because, among other reasons, "women are the custodians of biodiversity, the providers of food security...the conservers of the cultural diversity of food traditions." She also promotes a vision of Earth Democracy and sees the mission of the organizations she has founded to be "protecting the earth, defending our ecological and cultural heritage, and strengthening livelihood and food security."

Hello All,

I wanted to remind everyone that the AID fundraiser 'Bollywood on Ice' (http://tinyurl.com/boi2012 is next week, on wednesday, Jan 25th. We'll have an open ice-skate session at Schenley park skating rink, with DJ'd Bollywood music at the background from 7-9 pm. Dinner (from 7-11 pm) is included in the ticket.

Since this is the first time we are holding the event, we need a lot of help with publicity and ticket sales. Here are some of the ways you can help:

Come to the event : Give volunteers a boost in morale -- buy tickets in advance, online, at http://tinyurl.com/boi2012tickets. This will also help us estimate the amount of food we need to order.

Spread the word : Tell friends/family/colleagues about this event. This is an event that will appeal a large range of audience, especially kids.

Put up a flyer: Put up a flyer (attached) at your office, and in your neighborhood.

Hope to see you all at the event !

regards

Amitabh

The event is free and snacks will be served.

IGSA presents Parivarthan, a new initiative that provides you with the
opportunity to watch contemporary and topical documentaries from India
and around the world, while learning about a cause that deserves your
volunteer support and goodwill.

We will start on Feb 10th with the screening of the first part of “The
Story of India”, a much acclaimed BBC and PBS documentary that  traces
the 10000 year history of India from the beginning of civilization to
the different spiritual traditions that originated in India to the
various rulers of India all the way to the modern times.

The cause we will showcase for our first meeting is Eureka Child
(http://www.eurekachild.org/),  a school education initiative from AID
(Association for India Development). Eureka has been supplementing
Govt schools in over 1000 villages, with evening classes that employ
fun and innovative learning methods. These classes are taught by
educated youth from the same village, providing employment
opportunities for the local community.

The goal of Parivarthan is to form a group of interested people, with
an inclination for educating and entertaining ourselves with topical
documentaries from around the world, while learning about social
causes and initiatives that we can spread the word about.
