HEAVEN or HELL : Remember to share your spoon

Posted by: "jayashree_rao06" jayashree_rao06@...   jayashree_rao06

Sun Dec 28, 2008 7:01 pm (PST)

HEAVEN or HELL : Remember to share your spoon. A holy man was having a
conversation with the Lord one day and said, 'Lord, I would like to know
what Heaven and Hell are like.'

The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle of
the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large
pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's mouth
water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They appeared
to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long handles that
were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to reach into the
pot of stew and take a spoonful. But because the handle was longer than
their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths.

The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.

The Lord said, 'You have seen Hell.'

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same
as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of
stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were equipped
with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well
nourished and plump, laughing and talking. The holy man said, 'I don't
understand.'

It is simple,' said the Lord. 'It requires but one skill. You see they
have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of
themselves.'

Remember that I will always share my spoon with you.... [:)]

1 Time and again, reflect on your life in relation to the cosmos. It
is not even a drop in the ocean. This awareness will simply drop all
the smallness in you and you

will be able to live every moment of your life.

2 Remind yourself of the highest goal in your life. You are not here
to grumble ot to complain. You are here for something much bigger.

3 Serve! Engage yourself in community service to whatever extent you
can.

4 Have faith that the Divine loves you dearly and is taking care of
you. Have the trust and faith that you will get whatever is needed in
life.

5 As we flip the calendar, we need to keep flipping our mind as well.
Often, our diaries are full with memories. See that you don't fill
your future dates with past

events. Learn and unlearn from the past, and move on.

6 Smile more! True sign of prosperity is an unconditional smile on
your face.

7 Take some time to walk by yourself. Nurture yourself with music,
prayer and silence. Do a few minutes of meditation, pranayam and
yoga. This heals and rejuvenates

you, giving you depth and stability.

Get Refreshed, Revitalised and Invigorated

The Art of Living Part II course guides one on a journey deeper into ones self, enabling the spontaneous integration of life and wisdom. It offers a chance to dive deep into genuine relaxation. We need to rest in order to be more dynamic. However, often we come back from vacation feeling more exhausted and in the need of another one. The Part II course is vacation in the truest sense of the word. Complete with silence, meditation, seva (service) and celebration, it will help one emerge refreshed, revitalized and invigorated.

Often offered in-residence, it includes special meditations that utilize the power of silent awareness and observation for culturing the system, expanding awareness, and bringing freedom to life. The course is open to those who have already taken the Art of Living Part I workshop and is spread over 4-5 days.

The Tithal beach is one of the most significant and alluring beaches of Gujarat that stretches to the western part of the city of Valsad. Away from the black smoke, dust, pollution of the urban cities, you can just come to the Tithal Beach and relax on the unique black sand.

The Tithal beach is a hotspot not only for the people who come here to relax but also for the spiritual lot as it is blessed with some divine temples. You can even stay on the beach watching the mesmerizing sunsets and sunrises while refreshing yourself with tickling cool waves of the beach.

*Learn and unlearn from the past: Become free*
*By Sri Sri Ravi Shankar*
Every year, we begin the New Year wishing others happiness and prosperity.
What is the sign of prosperity? The sign of prosperity is freedom, a smile
and the willingness to share with people around you, without fear. The sign
of prosperity is the trust and confidence that you will get whatever is
needed in life.
*Welcome the year 2009 with a smile from within*. As we flip the calendar,
we need to keep flipping our mind as well. Often, our diaries are full with
memories. See that you don't fill your future dates with past events. Learn
and unlearn from the past, and move on.
You want to be free from greed, hatred, jealousy and all such imperfections.
If the mind is holding all these negative qualities, it cannot be happy or
peaceful – you cannot enjoy your life. So the first step is to see that
negative emotions are due to the past and not let the past affect your
experience of life now. Forgive the past. If you cannot forgive the past,
then your future will be miserable. This new year make up with someone with
whom you are not on good terms. Commit yourself to dropping the past and
starting a fresh life.
When the new year arrives wish everyone with a sankalpa (intention) for
peace and prosperity for all the people on the planet. With the economic
meltdown, looming terrorism, with floods & famine around, do more selfless
service. Realise that our foremost priority is to check violence in the
world, to free the world from domestic and societal violence. Make a
resolution to do more good to society, help the people who are in need and
bring solace to those who are suffering. Take responsibility for the nation.
The spiritual dimension of life brings a great sense of belongingness,
responsibility, compassion and caring for the whole world, for the whole
humanity. The spiritual dimension in the truest form smashes the narrow
boundaries of caste, creed, religion and nationality and gives one a broader
awareness of life present everywhere.
This year, let your devotion flower. Give it a chance to work. We should
experience the divine's presence, the divine's light around us. You should
have a desire in your mind to experience this. Has such a desire ever risen
in you - that you want the highest peace? The whole world is running by this
divine light. When you sing or pray there should be total involvement. If
the mind is preoccupied elsewhere then that is no prayer at all.
You are like a free bird. You are fully open. Feel that you are flying like
a bird. Learn to fly. This is something which you have to experience within
yourself. There is nothing else. If you consider yourself as bonded, you
will remain bound here. Be free. When will you experience freedom? Become
free right now. Sit down and become content. Spend some time in meditation &
satsang so that your inner self becomes strong enough to deal with the
challenges.
When the mind relaxes, the intellect becomes sharp. When the mind is loaded
with small things such as ambition, feverishness and desire, then the
intellect loses its keenness. And when the intellect and observation are not
sharp, life does not express itself fully, ideas dont flow and abilities
diminish day by day. With this understanding, step out of your little mind
and that step will solve many problems in your life. Be natural. Be with
love. Involve yourself in service. Celebrate your life
*.............Celebrate New Year - 2009*
*Jai Gurudev*

Subject: Fw: Fwd: WHY I AM A HINDU-MUST READ

WHY I AM A HINDU

Four years ago, I was flying from JFK NY Airport to SFO to attend a meeting at Monterey, CA.  An American girl was sitting on the right side, near window seat. It indeed was a long journey - it would take nearly seven hours.

I was surprised to see the young girl reading a Bible unusual of young Americans. After some time she smiled and we had few acquaintances talk.I told her that I am from India

Then suddenly the girl asked: 'What's your faith?' 'What?' I didn't understand the question.

'I mean, what's your religion? Are you a Christian? Or a Muslim?'

'No!' I replied, 'I am neither Christian nor Muslim'.

Apparently she appeared shocked to listen to that.. 'Then who are you?' 'I am a Hindu', I said.

She looked at me as if she was seeing a caged animal. She could not understand what I was talking about.

A common man in Europe or US knows about Christianity and Islam, as they are the leading religions of the world today. But a Hindu, what?

I explained to her - I am born to a Hindu father and Hindu mother. Therefore, I am a Hindu by birth.

'Who is your prophet?' she asked.

'We don't have a prophet,' I replied.

'What's your Holy Book?'

'We don't have a single Holy Book, but we have hundreds and thousands of philosophical and sacred scriptures,' I replied.

'Oh, come on at least tell me who is your God?'

'What do you mean by that?'

'Like we have Jesus and Muslims have Allah - don't you have a God?'

I thought for a moment. Muslims and Christians believe one God (Male God) who created the world and takes an interest in the humans who inhabit it. Her mind is conditioned with that kind of belief.

According to her (or anybody who doesn't know about Hinduism), a religion needs to have one Prophet, one Holy book and one God. The mind is so conditioned and rigidly narrowed down to such a notion that anything else is not acceptable. I understood her perception and concept about faith. You can't compare Hinduism with any of the present leading religions where you have to believe in one concept of god.

I tried to explain to her: 'You can believe in one god and he can be a Hindu. You may believe in multiple deities and still you can be a Hindu. What's more - you may not believe in god at all, still you can be a Hindu. An atheist can also be a Hindu.'

This sounded very crazy to her. She couldn't imagine a religion so unorganized, still surviving for thousands of years, even after onslaught from foreign forces.

'I don't understand but it seems very interesting. Are you religious?'
What can I tell to this American girl?

I said: 'I do not go to temple regularly. I do not make any regular rituals.. I have learned some of the rituals in my younger days. I still enjoy doing it sometimes..'

'Enjoy? Are you not afraid of God?'

'God is a friend. No- I am not afraid of God. Nobody has made any compulsions on me to perform these rituals regularly.'

She thought for a while and then asked: 'Have you ever thought of converting to any other religion?'

'Why should I? Even if I challenge some of the rituals and faith in Hinduism, nobody can convert me from Hinduism. Because, being a Hindu allows me to think independently and objectively, without conditioning. I remain as a Hindu never by force, but choice.' I told her that Hinduism is not a religion, but a set of beliefs and practices. It is not a religion like Christianity or Islam because it is not founded by any one person or does not have an organized controlling body like the Church or the Order, I added. There is no institution or authority..

'So, you don't believe in God?' she wanted everything in black and white.

'I didn't say that. I do not discard the divine reality. Our scripture, or Sruthis or Smrithis - Vedas and Upanishads or the Gita - say God might be there or he might not be there. But we pray to that supreme abstract authority (Para Brahma) that is the creator of this universe.'

'Why can't you believe in one personal God?'

'We have a concept - abstract - not a personal god. The concept or notion of a personal God, hiding behind the clouds of secrecy, telling us irrational stories through few men whom he sends as messengers, demanding us to worship him or punish us, does not make sense. I don't think that God is as silly as an autocratic emperor who wants others to respect him or fear him.' I told her that such notions are just fancies of less educated human imagination and fallacies, adding that generally ethnic religious practitioners in Hinduism believe in personal gods. The entry level Hinduism has over-whelming superstitions too. The philosophical side of Hinduism negates all superstitions.

'Good that you agree God might exist. You told that you pray. What is your prayer then?'

'Loka Samastha Sukino Bhavantu. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti,'

'Funny,' she laughed, 'What does it mean?'

'May all the beings in all the worlds be happy. Om Peace, Peace, Peace.'

'Hmm ..very interesting. I want to learn more about this religion. It is so democratic, broad-minded and free' she exclaimed.

'The fact is Hinduism is a religion of the individual, for the individual and by the individual with its roots in the Vedas and the Bhagavad-Gita. It is all about an individual approaching a personal God in an individual way according to his temperament and inner evolution - it is as simple as that.'

'How does anybody convert to Hinduism?'

'Nobody can convert you to Hinduism, because it is not a religion, but a set of beliefs and practices. Everything is acceptable in Hinduism because there is no single authority or organization either to accept it or to reject it or to oppose it on behalf of Hinduism.'

I told her - if you look for meaning in life, don't look for it in religions; don't go from one cult to another or from one guru to the next.

For a real seeker, I told her, the Bible itself gives guidelines when it says ' Kingdom of God is within you.' I reminded her of Christ's teaching about the love that we have for each other. That is where you can find the meaning of life.

Loving each and every creation of the God is absolute and real. 'Isavasyam idam sarvam' Isam (the God) is present (inhabits) here everywhere - nothing exists separate from the God, because God is present everywhere. Respect every living being and non-living things as God. That's what Hinduism teaches you.

Hinduism is referred to as Sanathana Dharma, the eternal faith. It is based on the practice of Dharma, the code of life. The most important aspect of Hinduism is being truthful to oneself. Hinduism has no monopoly on ideas.- It is open to all. Hindus believe in one God (not a personal one) expressed in different forms. For them, God is timeless and formless entity.

Ancestors of today's Hindus believe in eternal truths and cosmic laws and these truths are opened to anyone who seeks them. But there is a section of Hindus who are either superstitious or turned fanatic to make this an organized religion like others. The British coin the word 'Hindu' and considered it as a religion.

I said: 'Religions have become an MLM (multi-level- marketing) industry that has been trying to expand the market share by conversion. The biggest business in today's world is Spirituality. Hinduism is no exception'

I am a Hindu primarily because it professes Non-violence - 'Ahimsa Paramo Dharma' - Non violence is the highest duty. I am a Hindu because it doesn't conditions my mind with any faith system.

A man/ woman who change 's his/her birth religion to another religion is a fake and does not value his/her morals, culture and values in life.

Hinduism was the first religion originated. Be proud of your religion and be proud of who you are.

Please Do Send it to all your friends !!!!!!!!!!

The Bountiful Garden Foundation, in conjunction with the AOLF, is
proud to announce the expansion of its humanitarian service project
across the country and around the world.

BGF is an independent, 501c(3), not-for-profit NGO specializing in
raising sustainable, organic agriculture with the stated policy of
donating every single penny raised from the sale our our produce to
IAHV Humanitarian Relief efforts, specifically for post-trauma stress
relief. Each individual Bountiful Garden location maintains a fully
stand-alone and self-sufficient status by raising their own
operational funds via the sale of seedling plants each
spring.

Our specialty is gourmet Heirloom Tomatoes (over 100 varieties of
strains available; see website for details) that we've cultivated for
years.

Bountiful Garden has been operating successfully in the San Francisco
Bay Area for three years now and has established a tremendous
reputation as a community service organization and provider of
quality plants and produce at a fair price. What we would like to
do is replicate the success that we've experienced here at any
location where Art of Living has a presence. The project is fun,
simple to implement, devotionally satisfying and can easily
scale from 2 people to 200 people and from ages 5 to 85. In many
ways, Bountiful Garden is the perfect seva project.

We provide seeds, instructions, operation manuals, expertise, web site
presence, banners and other 'franchise' type materials to satsang
groups everywhere enthusiastic about spawning BGF hubs in your home
town.

If you're interested, send an email to national@...
and we'll add you to our network.

With Love,

Jai Gurudev,

 *Playing your part

 - H. H. Sri Sri Ravi Shankar*

Be thankful for the qualities you have been bestowed upon as they are not  your own making. In the same way, it depends on the part that you have been given to play.
Say, in a drama, you are given the part of a villain, and you play that role  perfectly.. A villain always knows that when I am playing the role of a  villain, it's just a role I am playing. I'm very sincere to my role.
There is a saying in Sanskrit,
*Durjanam Prathamam Vande Sajjanam Tadanantaram* .
First, worship the bad person, and then the good man. The bad  man is falling and giving you an example, "don't do what I did." Do not hate  a criminal in jail, because he's a criminal. In prison, if there is a  criminal, he is an embodiment of God. He has done you a greater service.
Don't ever hate a drug addict, because he has given you such a beautiful  lesson, and he has been given that role. He is just performing his role that  way.
When you understand these basic laws of truth, then your inner perfection  becomes so stable that nothing on this planet can shake your inner  perfection. Nothing can shake you. Your knowledge of a mistake comes to you  when you are innocent! The knowledge of a mistake dawns in the moment when
you are 'out of the mistake'.

However the past has been, whatever mistake has happened, do not consider  yourself to be a sinner or the maker of that mistake. In the present moment  you are new again, pure and clear.
Mistakes of the past are past. When this knowledge comes, that moment you  are again perfect.
Often, mothers scold their children and afterwards feel
so guilty. Then they go on regretting, "Oh, poor thing. I got so
angry and  annoyed at this kid, poor child! I should not have done this."
Then you prepare yourself to get angry again. Okay, you got angry with your kid once  or twice. Why? Because of lack of awareness! Awareness was missing so the  anger came up, it happened.
That's what Krishna tells Arjunaa, "Arjunaa, you think you are not going to  do what you are supposed to do?
I tell you, you will do it.
Even if you  don't want, you are going to do it!"
In a very clever way He puts it: "You  better surrender to me directly."

He says: "Drop everything. Surrender to Me, and do what I say". Then He  says: "Well, I have told you whatever I have to say, now you think it over  and do what you like, you do whatever you want to do, do however you like".
But then He said, "but remember, you will do only what I want".

These last few sentences of Krishna were so confusing, and people have  struggled to make sense out of them. There are thousands of commentaries  trying to make sense out of these few words, three contradicting statements.

First He says, Surrender everything, I'll do everything for you,
or just do  as I say.
Then he says: Think, think and see what is right for you, do
 whatever you feel is right.
And then in the third statement he says:
But  remember (anyway) you will do only what I want you to do.

All of our wanting to do, 'doership', is there to eliminate the
*tamas* or  inertia in you. Once inertia is eliminated, then you are in activity. When  you are acting, you become a witness to the acting. Then you know you are  not doing. Things are happening through you. This is the final level of  realization. You can see this in every action of yours.
Have you noticed  this? You are busy 'doing' when you accomplish something. In the beginning  you think, "Oh! I have accomplished. " But your accomplishment becomes more
and more and more and as time goes by, you will begin to
feel, "no, it's all  happening. I did not do anything, I did not accomplish."

A writer will feel, "I did not write, it just started flowing, it started  happening." All the creative work in the world - whether painting, dance, drama, music, anything - has all come from that unknown corner. It just  spontaneously started happening. You are not the doer. The best sculptor  will say, "I didn't do it, it just started happening." The best painter will  say the same thing; the best music composer would say the same
thing.

I tell you, the same is true for criminals too. You ask the worst
criminal,  "did you do this?" He will reply, "No, it happened! What could I do?"

*Knowledge  of the Self is the only thing that can take you from imperfection to  perfection.*

Some of the Experiences of YES2 Participants:

I consider myself fortunate that i got the oppotunity to do the first ever yes!2 held in north india ……my experience in yes!2 is just worth a million bucks!!!!!Here in this course i realised that critisicm can really make a difference.... I learnt to give up all my problems and not hold on to one for years.. and now i live with myself..............making others happy.........makes me feel great… am a completely new person after this course: ....

....Mahika  (Age :15)

I have never experienced so much power inside me.In these 5 days i have really come to know my own inner-self.These 5 days were full of MASTI & FUN. what i really liked about this course were the early morning yoga sessions.........wow FRESH AIR.On the 2rd day i really came to know the power of meditation & how is it to be with your own self , this was experienced when we were in silence the whole day. Every single process we did had a deeper meaning to it & got some knowledge from each one of them…The was a REBIRTH for me.At the last day what a wonderful experience it was to clean the streets of DELHI.i felt very great after doing this SEVA,i felt that for the first time i have done something for my country and that feeling after doing the SEVA cannot be expressed in words : …

…Jaidev (Age:16)

Our teacher said said on the very first day that when we’ll leave from YES! 2, we’ll be shining like diamonds. And I hardly thought on it !

But 5 days which were just like 5 minutes( because our mobile phones were taken away and we cudn’t keep a record of time) added life to his words !!

‘Anshika’ wasn’t the same gal who got irritated on lil’ things. It was 1 day “SILENCE” which made me strong.

My kiths and kins were shocked to see Anshika as a calm gal.And believe me that ever since I’ve done this fantabulous course I havnt shouted at my family members (which was a part of my routine) !!

Thank u GURUJI for designing such a beautiful course and bringing an Art of Living teacher in mah lyf !.And I don’t need to mention that the power of divine was in the air !!!.....

…Anshika (Age: 15)

Subject: CULTURE SERIES 1 : WHY DO WE DO NAMASTE
srini_p2001
Send Email Send Email

Why do we do namaste

Indians greet each other with namaste. The two palms are placed together in front of the chest and the head bows whilst saying the word namaste. This greeting is for all – people younger than us, of our own age, those older than friends, even strangers and us.

While singing the praises of namaste, it should be observed how efficient a gesture it is in an age of mass communication. A politician, or performer can greet fifty thousand people with a single namaste, and they can return the honor instantly. In such a situation a handshake is unthinkable and a mere waving of one hand is somehow too frivolous.

There are five forms of formal traditional greeting enjoined in the shaastras of which namaskaram is one. This is understood as prostration but it actually refers to paying homage as we do today when we greet each other with a namaste

Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit namah + te = namaste. It means – I bow to you – my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpreted as "na ma" (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one’s ego in the presence of another.

The real meeting between people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet another, we do so with namaste, which means, "may our minds meet," indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love and humility.

The spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life force, the divinity, the Self or the Lord in me is the same in all. Recognizing this oneness with the meeting of the palms, we salute with head bowed the Divinity in the person we meet. That is why sometimes, we close our eyes as we do namaste to a revered person or the Lord – as if to look within. The gesture is often accompanied by words like "Ram Ram", "Jai Shri Krishna", "Namo Narayana", "Jai Siya Ram", "Om Shanti" etc – indicating the recognition of this divinity.

Namaste is cosmically different. Kings do namaste. Sat Gurus say namaste and mothers do namaste to their own family. We all do namaste before God, a holy man or even a holy place. The namaste gesture bespeaks our inner valuing of the sacredness of all. It betokens our intuition that all souls are divine, in their essence. It reminds us in quite a graphic manner, and with insistent repetition, that we can see God everywhere and in every human being we meet. It is saying, silently. "I see the Deity in us both, and bow before it. I acknowledge the holiness of even this mundane meeting. I cannot separate that which is spiritual in us from that which is human and ordinary."

There are other, more mystical meanings behind namaste. The nerve currents of the body converge in the feet, the solar plexus and the hands. Psychic energy leaves the body at these junctures. To "ground" that energy and balance the flow of prana streaming through the nerve system, yogis cross their legs in the lotus posture, and bring their hands together. The anjali mudra acts like a simple yogic asana, balancing and harmonizing our energies, keeping us centered, inwardly poised and mentally protected. It closes our aura, shielding us psychically. It keeps us from becoming too externalized, thus we remain close to our intuitive nature, our superconsciousness.

Touching the hands together puts you in touch with your center, your soul. Namaste puts you forward as a soul, not an outer personality.

The gesture has a subtle effect on the aura and nerve system. Bringing focused attention and a collection of one's forces, so to speak. It also protects against unnecessary psychic connections which are fostered by shaking hands. This might be called a form of purity also-protecting one's energies.

When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just a superficial gesture or word but paves the way for a deeper communion with another in an atmosphere of love and respect.

There is a wonderful mythical law of nature that the three things we crave most in life -- HAPPINESS, FREEDOM and PEACE -- are always attained by giving them to someone else.

The Art of Living Part II course guides one on a journey deeper into our self, enabling the spontaneous integration of life and wisdom. It offers a chance to dive deep into genuine relaxation.

Jai Gurudev

If you have taken an Art Of Living Course or are a volunteer, then no doubt
you've asked yourself this question from time to time. A course is announced, a
senior teacher is visiting town, the volunteer team is formed and the phone
calls begin .

A conversation from many years ago :
Caller : Hi Jai Guru Dev
Me : Jai Guru Dev

Caller : Hey did you know that ABC is coming to town to teach the XYZ course ?
Me : Yes

Caller : So you have to take it
Me : Why ?

Caller : Pause. Because it is the most wonderful course that has ever been
offered by Art Of Living.
Me : Did you not say this the last time Course MNO was being offered ?

Caller : No No. You don't understand -this is the BEST course ever. You must
take it. All strong volunteers must take this course.
Me (under pressure trying to figure out a way to end the call) : Yeah thanks for
informing me, I'll check my schedule and call you back.

Caller : Yeah sure. Please sign up today ok ! JGD!
Me : Ok Thanks Byeeeeee JGD. (Thinking : Talk to you like NEVER again)

Whew ! Often times I have thought - Why so many courses, and Why do we have to
take them all and Why is there so much pressure to take them ? Initially these
thoughts irritated me to no end. But I have finally made my peace with them.
There was a time when I could but refused to take courses. There was a time when
I could and did.

Now is a time when I yearn for an opportunity and am willing but cant.
Interesting phases of life -huh ?

I thought I'd write a little FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) to myself. These
are questions my little mind brought up from time to time and the answers
gleaned from interactions with helpful teachers and volunteers, introspection
and experience.

Whether you agree or disagree - hopefully you'll find them interesting.
Q> Why do you call it a course ? Isn't this knowledge available freely or in
books or on the internet ?
A> Some things can't be read up in a book. Like learning to play the guitar or
playing football. You need a teacher. The modern commercial mind understands 2
things - time and money. Isn't it ? When someone asks you to do something - what
are your 2 questions ? How long does it take ? How much will it cost ? RIGHT ?
So there you go - thats a course.

Q> Why are there so many courses in AOL ? Part I, Part II, Sahaj, DSN, Blessing,
TTC1.....?
A> In the ancient days a student would go to the ashram of a master and serve
and learn at his/her feet for about 8 years gaining all the knowledge and skills
needed to navigate the choppy waters of life before returning to his/her worldly
duties. Today this is not possible for most of us in our commercial modern
world. Also our modern day education has no provision to teach valuable life
skills that truly equip us to navigate the pressures of life. Hence Guruji (Sri
Sri Ravishankar) has created these little courses (packets of Grace I call
them), that can be taken one at a time with a limited time/money commitment.
Once you take one and practice it, you will see the profound effect it has on
some dimension of your life. If you want to grow, take the next one, if not -
well !

Q> Why does the course cost so much ? You say it is priceless - why charge so
much ?
A> The course is priceless - not worthless. Do you see the difference ?

Q> Last time the same volunteer said that the previous course was the most
wonderful. Now he says this course is the most wonderful. What should I believe
?
A> There are 3 degrees of praising in the English Language : Good, Better, Best.
All AOL courses are the BEST in their own way. What can the poor volunteer do ?
The English language falls short of ways to describe one's experience and
infinity.

Q> I am doing great on all fronts - health, friends, job, studies, fun. Why are
you asking me to do this course ?
A> Do you buy home insurance after it has burnt down ? Health insurance after
you've been admitted to hospital ? Start saving money after becoming bankrupt ?
Life can be like the Titanic - icebergs in the form of karma lurk around
unexpected blind corners. When the ship of life does hit one, what would you
like to be holding in your hands - a life jacket or a violin :) ?

Q> No but seriously WHY should I take this course ? And for WHOM ?
A> You have to figure that out. Sometimes I took a course because a friend was
going. Sometimes because my favorite teacher asked me to. Sometime just to see
who this International Traveling teacher that everyone was raving about was .
Sometimes for Guruji. Sometimes I was choice-less. No matter what the reason, I
NEVER regretted my decision. All the skills I gained are applicable at every
moment in my life these days.If you asked me today - I would say that I want to
take all that my dear Guru has to offer to me in this lifetime of mine. Not to
please a teacher / volunteer - but for myself. After all who benefits after a
course - it is me !This post had to be written. Like it or not :) There - the
years old itch has been scratched !

Jai Guru Dev.

Jai Gurudev !
If you want to come to me . by Guruji !!
January 15, 2009 by Guru Kripa

If You Want To Come To Me - Sri Sri

Praising me is not enough. I am not satisfied by your praises, gratefulness and
gratitude. Do not just keep me on the stage, on the altar, put flowers and say,
Jai Gurudev!' Keep me in your heart. When you are grateful, there is also a lot
of gratitude and you feel like praising. But all this should be converted into
your soul and make you blossom..
Once in a while when you have a problem, you come and say JaiGurudev. Don't say
it only some times, say it all the time, everyday and every minute. All these
qualities you see in me are also in you.
Only when you keep me in your heart, does guru ship arise in you.Otherwise just
doing pad puja (worshiping the feet), saluting and running away, nothing will be
born in you. If you only want to garland flowers, then go to temples. There are
many idols there. There is no need of a Guru then. Not only that, there are many
people in the world, who love to sit and be garlanded. Go and garland them.
If you have come to me, then change. Change from inside.
There is no happiness in the world which you cannot get by being on the path of
knowledge. Once you taste this nectar, everything else will be bitter. Once you
begin to float in this, you will never experience a lack of anything in any way
in your life.
Don't keep me at a distance. By staying far away from me you have no benefit
whatsoever. You are just wasting your time and mine too. Whatever I am, you are
that too. Whatever you thought was impossible for you, I have come here to show
you that it is possible.
This body, this prana, has only one mission. It has come for one reason - to
introduce you all to your own self, to reveal the true self to you. Who are you?
You are truth. You are shiva. You are beauty.
See, many people come here. Some come just to visit the place and say, "oh!
nice." some feel nice inside and say, "oh! nice energy!"they take few deep
breaths and go back after one or two days in a good state of mind. Few others
come and stay a little longer, while, while others just loot every thing. They
take every thing. And that is good. Those are the kind of people I want. They
must loot everything.
The shop is open. So loot all you can......

Subject: [aol-hyd] Guruji's talk on valentine day :)

"Make God your Valentine. We will never be ditched, deceived or deprived," said
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at a Satsang in Kolkata on Saturday
when the city was in the grip of the Valentine's Day fever. The Art of Living
founder said the world is so distraught because of the absence of love.
"Even if there is love, the problem exists. Because, there is wrong expression
of it. Love without wisdom (gyan) can also bring trouble. If love comes with
wisdom, there will be joy, satisfaction and benediction," he said addressing a
crowd at the Rabindra Sarovar stadium.
On the attacks on people celebrating Valentine's Day, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
said: "The extreme reaction comes out of fear. Our culture, heritage is not so
fragile that one celebration would destroy it. There should be due respect to
decency and decorum. But if you apply force against the violators, they will
only increase. Force is no solution. Let it happen, if something is bad, people
will reject it automatically."
The Art of Living Guru prescribed five steps to get out of sufferings. First,
you have to understand the time you are in. Secondly, do some Yoga and Sadhana.
Yoga will stop bad things from happening in your life. Thirdly, think that you
have overcome many a problem in your life and will eventually also overcome the
problem causing your suffering. Next, you must understand that there are people
whose suffering is much worse than yours. Put yourself in the seva' of that
person. Finally, have complete faith in nature's law no suffering is perpetual.
Suffering will come and go.
"There are two modes you can be in participating and witnessing. We apply both
wrongly and end up being unhappy. You must participate in joy and witness
suffering. Whenever there is happiness, participate no matter whose happiness it
is. When there is suffering, observe it. But what we generally do is that we
only participate in suffering, whoever's it is. But when there is real cause of
happiness, we become its mere witness," he said.

Subject: [aol-hyd] CULTURE SERIES 2 : Why do we light a lamp, burn camphor
  and perform Aarti?

Why do we light a lamp, burn camphor and perform Aarti?

Having worshipped the Lord with love, lit by the lamp we see the beauty of the
Lord in all his glory. The singing, clapping is associated with the joy that
accompanies the vision of the Lord.

Aarti being performed with Camphor has a spiritual significance. Camphor burns
itself out completely without leaving a trace. Camphor represents our Vasanas,
unmanifest desires. So also if we were to take refuge in the Lord, obtain
knowledge, these desires will get burnt out. Although the camphor burns itself
out, it emits a nice perfume. On a human plane it means that we should sacrifice
ourselves to serve society, in the process spread the perfume of love and
happiness to all.

We close our eyes while performing the Aarti as if to look within. The Self or
Atman is within us. Self realization can be achieved by knowing thyself, with
the flame of knowledge. At the end of the aarti we place the hands over the
flame and touch our eyes and top of the head. It means that may the light that
illumined the Lord light up my vision, may my thoughts be pure and beautiful.

With the Aarti comes the flame which signifies light. There can be light in our
lives only if we have knowledge. In an era of darkness there would be ignorance,
we would be perpetually running to fulfill our vasanas resulting in unhappiness
and stress all around.
