Hi Elizabeth, I hear you loud &
clear! Wasn’t that wonderful to hear David Duncan I think that’s
his name read his work at the Tower, my friend Tim and I have been working “Deborhah”
into every conversation since.
I signed up on Yahoo for this group but
then was having problems with Yahoo trying to take over my computer and was so
annoyed at all the cr—popping up that I uninstalled everything yahoo, I
think this is partly from my daughter using my computer for instant messaging.
Let me work on it one of these evenings as I would like to participate in a
real forum on the arts. Karen

I am so sorry for the long delay here with this list serve.
I have been sitting here for an hour and I think I have it working now.
Please send a reponse email and say hello, introduce
yourself to the group and mention anything in your world of art that you
would like to share.
I finally have the list serve for Regional Arts Network running smooth! I hope you will consider signing up and being part of the art conversations that will take place on the list serve. For those of you who have inquired about the list serve, thank you so much for your patience!
I visualize individual artists, arts organizations and anyone interested in the arts posting things to the list serve. All mediums will be represented including theather, dance, literary, photography, design, visual, film...and anything I have forgotten here. Please pass this email on to anyone you think would be interested in this list serve.
The goal is to share information to strengthen our local arts community. Post events, shows, ideas, questions, thoughts, needs, readings, releases, exhibits to inform and share with one another. Along with the list serve three meetings a year will be held where we can get together, meet in person and network.

Poet-in-residence, COCC
PLEASE JOIN US ON WEDNESDAY MAY 17TH FOR:
COCC WORD CAFÉ 6
The Central Oregon Community College library welcomes all readers and
writers to the COCC Word Café 6 to celebrate with An Evening of
Prose: a gathering of words, minds, and spirits, in the presence of
good food, exuberance, and books.
Judith H. Montgomery, COCC poet-in-residence, will host the evening.
Featured readers Kristina Bak, Josh Beddingfield, David Jasper, and
Ellen Santasiero will read from their published and in-process works
that range from tears to laughter.
An open mic in the second half of the evening offers other writers -
beginning or experienced - an opportunity to read a favorite poem or
(very) short prose piece. Questions and conversation are welcomed,
over coffee and cookies. The event begins at 7 pm on Wednesday May
17th, in the Oregon Room, upstairs in the COCC Campus Library. For
more information: 383-7700 x 2566.
Featured Readers:
Kristina Bak has lived in Bend, except for some recent years in
Australia, since 1993. Her most recent book, ghostwritten for
renowned Australian sail racer and entrepreneur Mick York, is the
story of the restored 19th Century sailing ship the James Craig. The
book will be launched on board the ship in Sydney Harbor on July 5th.
Josh Beddingfield is a writer living in Bend. He was for a number of
ears the political reporter and editorialist for the Source Weekly,
and is a founding board member of the High Desert Journal. He has
worked throughout Oregon as a carpenter, forester, farm worker,
political activist, ski instructor, and caretaker. His poetry has
been published in little magazines, and his short fiction
anthologized in The Best of the First Line. He is currently working
on a collection of poetry and essays entitled Batholith, which
centers on life, work, and land in central and eastern Oregon.
David Jasper is a features writer at The Bulletin. Born and raised
in Miami, he started in journalism in 1995 at The Weekly Planet, an
alternative newspaper in Tampa. He and his family moved to Bend in
2001. His writing has appeared in Mademoiselle and Big Brother
Skateboard Magazine, and more recently in Kitchen Sink and, in web
form, on McSweeney's.
Ellen Santasiero is a Bend writer whose essays and interviews with
Northwest nonfiction writers have appeared in Northwest Review,
Oregon Home and High Desert Journal. She holds an MFA from the
Bennington College Writing Seminars, and has been awarded writing
residencies at Caldera and Soapstone. She works as a freelance
writer and writing coach. In her spare time she reads poetry, makes
collages, and dances.
Host: Judith H. Montgomery is a Bend poet whose chapbook, Passion,
was awarded the 2000 Oregon Book Award. Her second collection, Red
Jess, appeared in February 2006 from Cherry Grove Collections. She
holds a Ph.D. in American Literature from Syracuse University.
I do know that I had said we would have an artist salon for May. I contacted Cole as he had volunteered the use of Desert Rose Art Auction House for our May meeting, but I haven’t heard back so I think he’s out of town. I am unable to host it at my house, due to the death of an old friend. The memorial is on Saturday, which coincides with the salon scheduled date.
Fran suggested we do a bbq during the summer at one of the parks or something of that sort. If anyone wants to plan it or knows of a good venue (or even Drake Park potluck?) we could do that. Stay tuned.
Life is good. Go outside and feel the sun on your skin, hug the ones you love, listen to a beautiful piece of music, paint.
Please share this artist opportunity with all who may be interested and qualified....

Hello,
Jake and I have been thinking about putting together a
few groups this summer for an open nude modeling
session costing between $25-$30 per person for each
session. The two of us have been modeling together as
a couple for some time and I am now seven months
pregnant. So, the session would consist of the a
pregnant momma and papa doing gestures, longer sitting
and laying down poses, and some standing poses as
well. We have an indoor venue to work in and are
still working out details, but we wanted to put it out
there to see if anyone might be interested. The
sessions will be limited to 7-10 people, and all
medias are welcome except oil, as the venue is not
equipped for that kind of ventilation. Also, we want
it to be free flowing and for people who would like
exposure and practice with the male and female
pregnant body, as this is a rare occasion for the
modeling community in Bend and surrounding areas.
As a further note: We are also open to doing private
sessions for anyone interested in either of us as
models, in which case the prices will vary.
We look forward to putting something together with the
artists of Bend.
Laura Parker and Jake Norris.

Do something spontaneous and random for Summerfest! In the spirit of MAYhem, we're encouraging you to bring art to the streets of Summerfest this coming weekend: July 8 and 9. The guidelines are few and simple:
* Be mindful and courteous to the artists and vendors who have paid to be a part of the festival. (Read: If you're doing something that draws a crowd, try not to block access to vendors' booths. If there is a performer of similar genre as yourself on one of the stages, try to choose a place that is not in direct competition for audience. Spread the art around.)
* The streets and sidewalks are fair game, while the buildings and walls require permission from the owners. (Read: Use your sense of legality.)
* It is ACCEPTABLE to pass the hat for any performance or installation you do. (Read: Cameron Clark whole-heartedly endorses the hat.)
* Photo document your work, please. We'd really like to promote the work you do in press for future MAYhemesque events.
Our goal is to use Summerfest as a primer for Fallfest - when we're really hoping to have an onslaught of art in the streets. Build the energy and anticipation, so to speak. Bring on the MAYhemations!
If you have any questions please email or call me (350-2159).
This coming weekend July 8th & 9th at the Bend Summer festival, KPOV-Bend's community radio station, is hosting the Locals Only Stage. The stage is going to be at the north end of Wall Street by the Bank of America. We will be having music from 11 am to about 6 ish on both days. We are treating this as a guerilla music event; We are building our own stage, providing our own sound, and will be promoting local music as well as our community radio station; 106.7 KPOV.
Feel free to bring your performance or physical art down to the KPOV area by the Bank of America. I look forward to seeing you there.
"Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting "...holy shit...what a ride!"
How long will the sessions be?

Just a quick note to say hello and introduce myself to everyone. My name
is Tina Harris and I live in Redmond. I am a photographer who is
currently working an administrative office job to support my "habit" (ha
ha!) Are there any other photographers out there in this group? If so,
do you know of any models in the area who might be willing to work with me
in exchange for some shots for their books? I am not at the point yet
where I can afford to pay anything, but I am hoping to build up my
portfolio so I can get to the point where I AM ABLE TO (and maybe in the
meantime I can help someone who is still new to modeling build up their
books). I am not looking to do any nudes or anything too outlandish ... I
just need to get some nice images for my portfolio.
Thanks in advance for any advice, and I look forward to participating in
this group!
Best wishes,

The Oregonian has once again published a major editorial on cultural philanthropy. The opinion piece in today's paper praises Work for Art, the Regional Arts and Culture Council's innovative workplace giving program. RACC serves cultural non-profits and individual artists in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties. Development of Work for Art was funded, in part, by the Oregon Cultural Trust. The editorial's fact box once again points out Oregon's low rank in per capita state funding for culture and encourages people to check the RACC website, and the Trust's, for more information on cultural philanthropy.
Once again, please distribute this editorial widely - staff, board, current and prospective donors are but a few ideas. And write a letter to the editor, to The Oregonian or whichever paper serves your community. Several have been published in The Oregonian since the July 11th editorial; let's keep the dialogue going!
I've attached the editorial and the fact box as documents. Here are the website links:
For more information about Work for Art and how to participate - as a cultural organization or a business, contact Katherine Jackson at RACC, kjackson@....
Thank you!

Portland-area employers lacking a worthy cause may find inspiration in a regional campaign for art and culture
Monday, July 24, 2006
The Oregonian
W orkplace charity campaigns can be tricky. Some people would rather be pressured by a dozen co-workers selling gift wrap and bad candy than a single manager urging "voluntary" donations to the company's pet cause.
But the right workplace giving campaign can be magical, if it reflects the values of the staff. Scores of businesses in the Portland tri-county area may find that magic through Work for Art, a growing regional effort to raise private money for local arts and culture.
Work for Art is a brainchild of the Regional Arts & Culture Council, a nonprofit organization that oversees most of the public funding of the arts in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties. This umbrella group supports arts and cultural organizations of every size, from the Oregon Symphony to Sojourn Theatre. It also helps arts programs in schools and gives small grants to individual artists.
A few years ago, arts council leaders decided to pay more attention to private funding. They had two good reasons to do so. First, Oregon ranks 47th in the nation for state funding of the arts. Second, local funding is not always reliable during lean years, when public safety and other needs take first priority.
So the arts council kicked off a private giving campaign as a way to connect more people -- and more donors -- to the region's music, art, dance, theater, film, visual arts and literary arts scenes.
The initiative started small. Very small. Fewer than two dozen employers signed up in the first two years, with employees donating about $80,000 through payroll deductions and direct donations. But momentum is growing: Five more employers, including The Standard and Umpqua Bank, already have joined the 2006-07 campaign.
What's more, the city of Portland has promised to match all private contributions. The Work for Art group hopes to raise at least $100,000 this year, which would double with the city match.
Signing on to Work for Art may not be appropriate for businesses that already have one or more workplace charities. (The Oregonian, for example, directs most of its charitable energies toward social services through the United Way and the newspaper's Season of Sharing campaign.) Employees are a captive audience, and overloading them with solicitations may backfire.
But Work for Art should appeal to businesses that lack a charitable cause -- particularly to businesses that depend on creative and innovative employees. Ernie Bloch, vice chairman of the arts council, says the benefits are hard to beat: Employees can get discounted tickets to concerts and other arts events, which helps offset the high cost of living. Their cultural enrichment, in turn, can spur on-the-job inspiration.
As a result, Portland's arts scene thrives and attracts more talent to the area.
Portland holds its own among U.S. cities for public arts funding, but it lags behind on the West Coast. It invests less than San Francisco and Los Angeles, unsurprisingly, but also less than Seattle, Sacramento, San Diego, San Jose and Oakland. An infusion of private dollars will help Portland's small but vibrant arts scene continue to grow.
By the numbers Oregon ranks 47th in the nation for public state funding of the arts, investing only 16 cents a person.
Monday, July 24, 2006
The Oregonian
Local public funding for the arts and culture is considerably higher within the Portland tri-county metropolitan area, breaking down to about $2.84 a person.
The city of Portland spends nearly $5 a person on arts and culture. That is about average among U.S. cities, but low for the West Coast.

Subject: Call to Artists: Fall Festival's 101 random acts of art
Get your random acts together for the MAYhem during this years' FallFest: 101 Random Acts of Art.
This is a calling for you to do whatever it is you think this town needs to get it's art fix. Bring the art to the people. Be the art in the people.
Deadlines: Fallfest is Saturday, October 7 - Sunday, October 8. If you plan to install or instigate random acts of art, make it happen during then. If you want some publicity prior to your act, September 11 is your cut off to send information to sweetpeacole@...
Rules: DO whatever you want.
But we ask and encourage you to be considerate of the vendors that have paid to be a part of the festival. Try not to block access to their booths and try to to perform in a similar style, at the same time, right next to one of the event's scheduled stage performers.
Putting a hat out for donation/contributions/tips is encouraged.
Stuff on the street is fine. Stuff on the buildings requires building owner's permission.
Additional info: of course letting us know what you're planning helps us get the word out, and increases the chance of getting good photos of your act. But anonymity is accepted.
Questions: contact Sweet Pea 350-2159 or sweetpeacole@...
Artists Local 101 is producing the first issue of an art zine "Guerilla" and releasing/distributing it during the Fallfest Oct 7-8.
Got something to add? Anyone interested in submitting something is encouraged to do so. It needs to be 4 1/4 in x 5 1/2 in. It will be printed in black and white.
Deadline? Sept 11. Email it to sweetpeacole@... or call me 350-21559 to arrange a drop off or mail delivery plan.
Delivery/Distribution: Want to help get it spread out? We'll need people to take a stack or two to your favorite haunts. Contact Sweet Pea for details and a plan.
