Hey Austin salseros!

I'm a first year UT grad student new to Austin and a HUGE fan of salsa!! I went
to undergrad in Chicago and the salsa scene there was wonderful ... so I was
quite amazed (and thrilled!) to see such a big crowd at the salsa festival last
night at the Union. :)

I have a couple quick questions for you local experts ... I went to the
cityguide link and saw a list of all the places to hit in Austin for salsa
nights, but which ones are the most highly recommended? (good music, best
dancing scene, primarily salsa tunes and NOT reggaeton or random hip-hop songs,
etc.) I kept hearing things about Copa last night, and I heard Oasis is
beautiful but, according to the website, the Brew only plays there during the
summer, so ... does that mean it kind of dies down during the rest of the year?
I also heard Speakeasy is pretty good as well. Which ones do you guys think are
worth checking out?

Thanks a bunch and hope to be seeing some of you very soon! :)

-Sharlie

P.S. If you guys know of any great dance studios and/or instructors (with
reasonable prices ... remember I'm a broke grad student!), feel free to
recommend those as well. :)

Plena Libre

Two Evenings of Afro-Puerto Rican Roots Big Band Sound

It has been eleven years since the group Plena Libre burst onto the musical
scene in Puerto Rico. What they offered was different, fresh, danceable, and
experimental but rooted in the traditional one-hundred year old genre– the
Puerto Rican plena. On October 4th 2005 Times Square will be releasing their
11th CD, titled Evolución (Evolution, TSQ-CD- 9048)

Going against the currents of the Latin commercial music scene, this Afro-Rican
group of 13 members presented a different and relatively unknown genre. Plena
Libre created a presence on the scene for itself, and have since also become
ambassadors of the new sounds of Puerto Rico. They have taken their updated
blend of roots music to many parts of the world. In the past few years, Plena
Libre has been nominated three times for the Grammies and has received many
awards in their native Puerto Rico.

Evolución, marks the beginning of a new decade for the “plena ambassadors”, as
they are known in Puerto Rico. While their previous CD, “Estamos Gozando!”
celebrates their first decade in a tribute to past interpreters of bomba and
plena, Evolución returns to Plena Libre’s experimental path with a new and
vigorous perspective.

For Plena Libre, Evolución marks a new level of maturity and quality. The core
of the band’s repertoire remains the danceable plena. Evolución also presents
a new sound for the group, amplifying its trombone section with the profundity
of the baritone sax and incorporating the flute, classical and electric guitars,
vibraphone, the Puerto-Rican cuatro and the accordion for additional color in
Evolución. The traditional formats of bomba and plena are enhanced by the
rhythm section as well. In short, every track presents both the traditional
essence of plena and bomba as well as the musical liberties taken by Gary Nuñez,
the band’s leader and arranger, and the members of the group.

Join us for this artists first time appearance in Austin. This should be a most
memorable evening for all!

I had a few classes left on my Go Dance class card and I decided to check out
the advanced salsa classes there.

I've been concerned that with Taletha's departure Go Dance won't have
experienced salsa instructors to teach advanced level material. I was very
pleasantly surprised.

First off, unlike in the good ol' days, Level 4 was a lot more advanced than
Level 3. I'm sure, Azucena and Carlos spent good effort preparing the material
for the class: the pattern was fresh, interesting, and challenging. The kind of
stuff you'd normally learn at a salsa congress and not in a local dance studio.

I was very impressed with the quality of instruction, too. It was very clear
that they are very comfortable with the pattern and could break it down very
clearly, with Carlos giving pointers to the leads and Azucena to the follows.
That's was most salsa classes miss:
one instructor often gives you only one side of the story.

The pacing of the class was excellent and I left with impression that most
students enjoyed it. I certainly was happy to have learned a cool new pattern
that I used the very same evening on some strange girl at Copa (it was very
leadable).

I'm very happy that Austin has a new couple of salsa teachers who not only have
charming personalities and great work ethics, but also keep up with all the
latest salsa fads and fashions by traveling to other cities and congresses and
bring us cool new stuff to
dance.

Good job, guys! Great choice of material and excellent presentation.

Max

What a wonderful Salsa weekend, in Austin, Texas, USA!!!

Plena Libre @ Copa:

Incredible Caribbean/salsa sound! Excellent musicians and
performers! They know their music really well. Kept the audience
(primary non salsa dancers) moving and enjoying the different
traditional and non-traditional songs. A large group of Puerto Rican
was also present given the full PR effect to the experience. At one
point the drummer play a ten minute solo that kept all of us
clapping, yelling, and moving our hips like crazy. Wonderful talent!

Carlos, Azucena, Daniel's workshop @ Go Dance:

To me, being Venezuelan, I know a little about the music, just
because I "hear" and "feel" the music. But that does not help if you
are planning to take your dancing to the next level, so it put
my "street knowledge" at an "academic" level, understanding
arrangements, music phrasing, music patterns and instruments
typically play in a salsa band. The workshop has made an impact on
my dancing already and my appreciation of the music has been
elevated to new heights. I still have a lot to learn, but I am
excited that we have the right team here in our own backyard!

The software develop by them was an excellent visual aid to
understand where our feet need to be at as we listen to the music,
why certain portions of the music feel like explosions of sounds and
others like a calm lake.

And of course we also had a little demonstration of dancing at the 1-
2-3 5-6-7 patterns vs. following the clave from Azucena. Who is a
joy to watch dancing.

Daniel, Azucena and Carlos what a great team of Salseros we have
here!

Here's an article written by my friend's son about salsa in the Arab area.

http://www.csmonitor.com/2005/1005/p01s04-wosc.html

Lora Herring

---

Our reporter asks, Is this the rhythm of a world in step?
By Scott Baldauf

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – What if it could be proved that no two nations that play
salsa music have ever declared war on each other?
Some of the best salsa music in the Middle East comes from Egypt and Israel, for
instance. Both nations have been at peace since 1979, the same period when salsa
began to take hold.

A coincidence? Perhaps not.

The first time I heard Arabic salsa music, I was in a taxi in Dubai, United Arab
Emirates, racing to catch a connecting flight to Afghanistan. The taxi driver, a
Pakistani, was playing an incredible song on his radio. First came the Latin
rhythms on bongos, then the rush of flamenco guitars. It sounded like the sort
of dance music I grew up listening to in south Texas but with a distinctly
Middle Eastern trill of the voice and the guttural lyrics that could only be
Arabic.

The music was a revelation. After Sept. 11, and the media barrage proclaiming a
"clash of civilizations" between the West and the Arabic world, here was
evidence of something quite the opposite. Instead of a clash, this was a blend,
and a gorgeous one at that.

It was a reminder that there were other voices in the Arab world than Osama bin
Laden, and good voices at that.

"Amr Diab," the taxi driver announced proudly. "He is Ricky Martin of the Arab
people."

Age has taught me manners, so I remained silent until I reached the airport. But
in my head I was thinking: I know Ricky Martin, from his few years at the top of
the charts. And Amr Diab is no Ricky Martin. He's much better.

At the airport, on the way to my gate, I grabbed every Amr Diab tape on the rack
of the airport's ample music store. Once in Kabul, my Afghan driver in Kabul was
very enthusiastic when I put it into the tape deck of his Toyota Corolla.

"Thank you, thank you, Mr. Scott," he said, giving me the thumbs up and his only
four words of English.

It was then that I realized two things. One, I would never see these tapes
again. And two, that salsa is universal. It takes root in whatever soil it is
planted. In the past four years in South and West Asia, I have heard salsa in
Arabic, Persian, Dari, Urdu, Hindi, Indonesian, Thai, Sinhalese, and Nepali.

With such universal acceptance, one starts to think of whether salsa can
contribute to world peace.

But let's just focus on Arabic salsa for a moment.

By far, the prime practitioner of the art is Amr Diab. His greatest hits album,
"The Very Best of Amr Diab," should be in the collection of any worldly
world-music lover. Most of my friends can sing the words to his hit song "Nour
Elain," ... but then, keep in mind that most of my friends are war
correspondents who travel between Baghdad and Kabul. Perhaps not a
representative crowd.

The most satisfying thing about Arabic salsa is the fact that it fits so well.
You hear the ululating of an Arabic singer, and you compare it to the harsh
vibrato of the Gypsy Kings, and you are suddenly aware that you are standing on
that middle ground between cultures.

From about 700 A.D. until a few years before the discovery of America, Spain was
a land occupied by Muslims. Its universities taught Arabic. Its musicians and
troubadours sang in Arabic. Its architecture and arts were all influenced by the
Middle East, and Europeans flocked there for decent educations.

Is it any surprise that Arab singers would find Latin music attractive?

Amr Diab is not alone. Over the past few years, there have been plenty of other
examples - including Cheb Faudel's "Salsa," Natacha Atlas's French-and-Arabic
language "Ne me jugez pas," the Gypsy Kings' crossover Arabic song, "Alabina,"
and Hakim's Spanish-language hit, "Los cuatros punales," - of those who have
experimented with salsa in the past years.

There is even an Iranian singer named Andy who has gotten into the salsa game
with the Persian-Arabic salsa hit, "Yalla."

Ya Allah, indeed, the Islamic extremists must be thinking, as they tug at their
beards. What has happened to the new generation? All they want to do is dance,
and run down the street singing, "Habibi... habibi... habibi... el Nuor Elain
(My darling, you are the light of my eye....)"

How exactly can one carry out a clash of civilizations if civilizations refuse
to clash?

JetBlue is an airline that will be offering three nonstops flys to New
York daily, the introductory price is $79.00 each way if purchase by
October 31 and traveling between January 19 and February 14.

I would like to know if any body on the Salsa community would be
interested in going and share costs (primary hotel) and take as many
classes available in New York as possible as well as Social Dance.

This is an incredible opportunity! New York has some of the greatest
instructors in the world not to mention the incredible salsa scene.

Please email me directly at "marion @ salsa-bembe.com" if you are
interested.

Thanks,

Austin Chronicle 2005 Best Of Austin Readers Choice for Best DANCE LESSONS Go

"Interest during the Nineties' swing and early 2000s' salsa crazes turned out to
not be fading trends, as local dance groups still seem to be popping up all over
town. Go Dance wins this brand-new category for their smooth moves and many
workshops (Cha Cha with David! Salsa Team with Azucena and Carlos!), classes
(over 40 weekly!), and social dance parties (a chance to hone or show off your
chops). So don't just hold up the bricks like a wallflower, go dance, and shake
what your mama gave ya!"

The History of the Santo Rico Dance School, Inc.

The history of Santo Rico dates back to 1995. The name of the dance company is
derived from the initial members of the group being half from Santo Domingo
(Santo) and half from Puerto Rico (Rico), hence the name "Santo Rico." Santo
Rico was initially formed by Wilton Beltre, a 32 year old Dominican native, who
expressed his love for dancing by displaying his street style of dancing
Mambo/Salsa in local nightclubs in New York City. Prior to forming Santo Rico,
Wilton received dancing instruction from the well renowned Eddie Torres. This
gave him professionalism and grace and ultimately led to the development of a
unique style. During his stint with Mr. Torres Wilton excelled and brought his
dancing ability to such a high level that he became one of the most outstanding
members of The Eddie Torres Dance Company.

After several years with The Eddie Torres Dance Company Wilton decided to start
his own dance company called Santo Rico Dance Co. At first there were many
difficulties he had to surmount, for obvious reasons: (1) The dance company
didn't have a place of its own and therefore its members had to submit to the
schedules and rules and regulations of people who didn't understand its purpose
and its art; (2) the business environment was unstable, making it difficult to
establish a strong and sturdy foundation at the time; (3) the attempt to
maintain a consistency with the students in the new dance company, but Wilton
was not discouraged. Wilton held the group's rehearsals on the second floor of a
restaurant called "La Pequeña España" - "Pequeña" meaning very small in Spanish
and indeed the space was small. At times, he would take most of his students on
some Sundays to Jones Beach and give them classes out there perhaps either
because his Sunday class schedule conflicted with that of the person he was
subletting from, or it was probably too hot due to the lack of air conditioning
in some of the places in which he taught. By this time, Wilton's classes were
growing at a rapid rate as his clientele grew stronger. Once people found out
about Wilton's dance school and how others were already getting so good at the
art via his teaching methods they would flock into Wilton's classes wanting to
know how to dance, and right before our eyes Wilton's school established itself
as one of the best Salsa schools among the Dominican community.

One of the turning points for Santo Rico came when Wilton acquired rehearsal
space through a friend. This was Wilton's big break because they sold the place
to him at an incredibly low price and in pretty good condition. Wilton
immediately took advantage of this opportunity and in his short time teaching he
had his own school, with his own schedule and the chance to build an even
stronger foundation from his aspirations. Santo Rico Dance School was up and
running. There was more rehearsal time and more rehearsal space.

One of Santo Rico's most pivotal turning points was when they performed on
Channel 41, the Latin community's most popular channel. It performed on a
program called "Sabado al Medio Dia." This performance signaled the beginning of
something special because it drew an even larger following of students and
increased Santo Rico's popularity among other communities. Several promoters and
organizations, including Channel 41, grew interested in the group. Channel 41
put them in some of their commercials, and from this a lot of other performances
and opportunities arose. Their visions grew and their dreams were becoming
reality before their very eyes. In fact, thereafter they were invited to
audition for a fundraiser at a club located in downtown Manhattan called "Roxy"
that was to be hosted by Michael DeLorenzo and Lauren Velez of Fox 5's "New York
Undercover," which was one of the hottest shows on TV at the time. Santo Rico
was also invited to perform in Madison Square Garden. At the first annual World
Salsa Congress in Puerto Rico they were also invited to perform one of the
hottest routines out at the time, a number called "Soneros de Bailadores,"
choreographed by Wilton Beltre. It was this routine that actually put Santo Rico
on the dancing map because Wilton Beltre and Santo Rico Dance Co. were rolling
and only getting better with every performance.

In 1997 things started to roll downhill for the company. Wilton was forced to
relinquish the group due to personal matters he had to attend to. At that point,
the group had no direction without Wilton's leadership and experience. The
reality of Wilton's unexpected leave of absence left the group disoriented and
unprepared to deal with the daily grind of managing the group's affairs on a
full-time basis. Ultimately, the members of the company went their separate ways
and did their own thing on a part-time basis with their dancing.

Upon his departure Wilton entrusted Thomas Guerrero with the company's
responsibilities due to the closeness they developed while working together
within the dance company. At the time, this was an incredibly challenging feat
for Thomas because of his lack of experience and know-how as far as handling a
business or maintaining the dance school. However, Thomas felt determined to
persevere because of his commitment to their friendship and therefore didn't
want to desert Wilton at such a time of need. Wilton pleaded with Thomas to not
let the Santo Rico name vanish or be taken away, and vowed to someday return.
This led Thomas to proceed with devoting himself to Santo Rico and its
endeavors. He began to formally give classes at Wilton's school alongside others
who helped out for Wilton's sake. At first, Thomas figured that teaching
wouldn't be that big of a deal; however, as time progressed he became more
curious as it became incredibly difficult before he realized that he had to do a
lot of learning of his own in order to acclimate himself to the teaching
environment.

After a few months of teaching Thomas assembled a student group comprised of his
most advanced students and named it "Xibicion" Santo Rico - "Xibicion" meaning
"Exhibition" in English. This officially marked the beginning of Thomas' career
as a choreographer and the director of his own group. Xibicion Santo Rico was
Thomas' personal project and his pride and joy. After approximately a year of
hard work and dedication Thomas decided it was time for Xibicion, due to their
maturity as dancers and as people to move on, so he made Xibicion Santo Rico
into his actual professional dance company, and called them "The New Santo
Rico."

Today, Santo Rico Dance Co. is a certified dance corporation registered with the
State of New York. Santo Rico Dance School is currently well established with a
formidable clientele. Santo Rico's curriculum entails teaching on a daily basis
and the recruitment of students with the potential and the will to someday
perform. Santo Rico's professional dance troop currently consists of thirteen
(13) dancers, six (6) males and seven (7) females and their goals are to prepare
themselves well for future endeavors. Santo Rico is currently enroute to
exploring and traveling to different places, like London, England, San
Francisco, Los Angeles and Norway, to entertain where their style and their
dance company has not yet been introduced.
