maybe we should have one "Only in the Philippines"
The Darwin Awards - 2009 Yes, it's that magical time of year again when the Darwin Awards are bestowed, honoring the least evolved among us. Here is the glorious winner: 1.
When his 38 caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim
during a hold-up in Long Beach California, would-be robber James Elliot
did something that can only inspire wonder. He peered down the barrel and tried the trigger again. This time it worked.
And now, the honorable mentions:
2.. The chef at a
hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat cutting machine and after
a little shopping around, submitted a claim to his insurance company.
The company expecting negligence sent out one of its men to have a look
for himself. He tried the machine and he also lost a finger. The chef's claim was approved.
3. A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car
during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his vehicle to find a woman
had taken the space. 'Understandably', he shot her.
4. After stopping
for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20
mental patients he was supposed to be transporting from Harare to
Bulawayo had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver
went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone waiting there a free
ride. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling
the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre
fantasies. The deception wasn't discovered for 3 days. 5. An American
teenager was in the hospital recovering from serious head wounds
received from an oncoming train.. When asked how he received the
injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how
close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit.
6. A man walked
into a Louisiana Circle-K, put a $20 bill on the counter, and asked for
change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man
pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the
clerk promptly provided.. The man took the cash from the clerk and
fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he
got from the drawer..... $15. [If someone points a gun at you and gives
you money, is a crime committed?]
7. Seems an Arkansas
guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a
cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run.
So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the
window. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the
head, knocking him unconscious. The liquor store window was made of
Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape. 8. As a female
shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse
and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the woman was able to
give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the
police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back
to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand
there for a positive ID to which he replied, "Yes, officer, that's her.
That's the lady I stole the purse from." 9. The Ann Arbor
News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in
Ypsilanti, Michigan at 5 A.M., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The
clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash
register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the
clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated,
walked away. [*A 5-STAR STUPIDITY AWARD WINNER] 10. When a man
attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle
Street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the
scene to find a very sick man curled up next to a motor home near
spilled sewage.. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to
trying to steal gasoline, but he plugged his siphon hose into the motor
home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to
press charges saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had.
In
the interest of bettering mankind, please share these with friends and
family..... unless of course one of these individuals by chance is a
distant relative or long lost friend. In that case, be glad they are
distant and hope they remain lost.
The reason to forward the below is not that a 97 year old doctor is still practicing but the reason is to share with you the pattern he has adopted to lead his life. It's amazing to note that at the age of 97, his diary is full of appointment until Y2016 where he 'confidently' plans to lecture around & wants to have fun and attend Tokyo Olympics. (He will by then be 104 years old)
97 YEARS OLD DOCTOR & THIS IS WHAT HE HAS TO SAY
At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing. After World War II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college springing from the ruins of Tokyo; thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, the doctor turned these institutions into the nation's top medical facility and nursing school. Today he serves as chairman of the board of trustees at both organizations. Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one "Living Long, Living Good" that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself.
Doctor Shigeaki Hinohara JUDIT KAWAGUCHIPHOTO
Energy comes from feeling good, not from eating well or sleeping a lot.We all remember how as children, when we were having fun, we often forgot to eat or sleep. I believe that we can keep that attitude as adults, too. It's best not to tire the body with too many rules such as lunchtime and bedtime.
All people who live long regardless of nationality, race or gender share one thing in common, None are overweight...For breakfast I drink coffee, a glass of milk and some orange juice with a tablespoon of olive oil in it. Olive oil is great for the arteries and keeps my skin healthy. Lunch is milk and a few cookies, or nothing when I am too busy to eat. I never get hungry because I focus on my work.. Dinner is veggies, a bit of fish and rice, and, twice a week, 100 grams of lean meat..
Always plan ahead. My schedule book is already full until 2014, with lectures and my usual hospital work. In 2016 I'll have some fun, though: I plan to attend the Tokyo Olympics!
There is no need to ever retire, but if one must, it should be a lot later than 65.The current retirement age was set at 65 half a century ago, when the average life-expectancy in Japan was 68 years and only 125 Japanese were over 100 years old. Today, Japanese women live to be around 86 and men 80, and we have 36,000 centenarians in our country. In 20 years we will have about 50,000 people over the age of 100...
Share what you know.I give 150 lectures a year, some for 100 elementary-school children, others for 4,500 business people. I usually speak for 60 to 90 minutes, standing, to stay strong.
When a doctor recommends you take a test or have some surgery, ask whether the doctor would suggest that his or her spouse or children go through such a procedure.Contrary to popular belief, doctors can't cure everyone. So why cause unnecessary pain with surgery I think music and animal therapy can help more than most doctors imagine.
To stay healthy, always take the stairs and carry your own stuff.I take two stairs at a time, to get my muscles moving.
My inspiration is Robert Browning's poem "Abt Vogler."My father used to read it to me. It encourages us to make big art, not small scribbles. It says to try to draw a circle so huge that there is no way we can finish it while we are alive. All we see is an arch; the rest is beyond our vision but it is there in the distance.
Pain is mysterious, and having fun is the best way to forget it.If a child has a toothache, and you start playing a game together, he or she immediately forgets the pain. Hospitals must cater to the basic need of patients: We all want to have fun. At St. Luke's we have music and animal therapies, and art classes.
Don't be crazy about amassing material things.Remember: You don't know when your number is up, and you can't take it with you to the next place.
Hospitals must be designed and prepared for major disasters, and they must accept every patient who appears at their doors. We designed St.... Luke's so we can operate anywhere: in the basement, in the corridors, in the chapel. Most people thought I was crazy to prepare for a catastrophe, but on March 20, 1995, I was unfortunately proven right when members of the Aum Shinrikyu religious cult launched a terrorist attack in the Tokyo subway. We accepted 740 victims and in two hours figured out that it was sarin gas that had hit them. Sadly we lost one person, but we saved 739 lives.
Science alone can't cure or help people.Science lumps us all together, but illness is individual. Each person is unique, and diseases are connected to their hearts. To know the illness and help people, we need liberal and visual arts, not just medical ones..
Life is filled with incidents. On March 31, 1970, when I was 59 years old, I boarded the Yodogo, a flight from Tokyo to Fukuoka. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and as Mount Fuji came into sight, the plane was hijacked by the Japanese Communist League-Red Army Faction. I spent the next four days handcuffed to my seat in 40-degree heat. As a doctor, I looked at it all as an experiment and was amazed at how the body slowed down in a crisis.
Find a role model and aim to achieve even more than they could ever do.My father went to the United States in 1900 to study at Duke University in North Carolina. He was a pioneer and one of my heroes. Later I found a few more life guides, and when I am stuck, I ask myself how they would deal with the problem.
It's wonderful to live long.Until one is 60 years old, it is easy to work for one's family and to achieve one's goals. But in our later years, we should strive to contribute to society. Since the age of 65, I have worked as a volunteer. I still put in 18 hours seven days a week and love every minute of it.
Some of you may know that I spent a week in Fuda Cancer Hospital in Guangzhou, China last August. I stayed at the hospital to be with my cousin, Dayday Joseph-David. She has stage 4 breast cancer which had metastasized to her lungs, brain and hip bone.
Her battle with this disease started six years ago. Traditional chemotherapy and a mastectomy wiped out the tumors and we hoped she had won. She even was blessed with 2 sons. Last year a growth was found in her lungs which was identified as breast cancer cells. Again she went through chemotherapy (with all the nasty side effects). The tumor disappeared, but early this year more tumors appeared in her lungs, brain and hip bone.
After much consideration and investigation, Dayday decided to go for treatment in Fuda Hospital. There she received cryosurgery, direct-to-tumor chemotherapy (my name for it, it might really be called something else) with fewer side effects, tiny radioactive seeds, and immunotherapy. Aside from these most modern of treatments, she also was given traditional Chinese teas and daily acupressure, to help her fight the disease and the side effects of the treatments.
Last month she returned to China for a check up and for immunotherapy and most of the tumors had disappeared. The ones that had not disappeared had shrunk or were like scars (again my non-medical description) .
I am telling you all about this because I was doubtful about a hospital in China. The success of Dayday's treatment helped changed my mind, but my staying there for a week has made me disciple of Fuda. Considering I was in a hospital with only cancer patients, I was filled with hope and trust. The place was very very clean. Many of the doctors were trained abroad, so spoke good English, but there were always translators with the patient during examination or treatment. Everyone, from the girls who cleaned the room, to the nurses, residents, doctors and administration, were so very nice and kind. (Okay, I did get into a disagreement with the take out restaurant across the street about a missing Black Chicken order, but even then the manager of the restaurant came to apologize).
The treatments, the room and the tests were much less expensive than they would be here in Manila. Although many of their treatments are simply not available in Manila.
I am telling you all this because if you know anyone who has cancer. They must consider Fuda Hospital. Even if they decide to go with treatment here and doctors and hospitals here, they have to know that there may be choices that the doctors here are not offering them, cannot offer them.
On Saturday, 5 December 2009, there will be a FREE seminar about Fuda Hospital at the Manila Peninsula from 9 am to 12 nn. Doctors from Fuda Hospital will be there to discuss their Novel Concepts and Treatments for cancer. consultation s will be held after the seminar and the following day Dec. 6. (registration required)
Please contact for reservations (seats are limited)
Several Filipino patients who had been treated in Fuda will be there to tell their stories, including my cousin, Dayday. (She reserved me a seat but Aldo has a jiu jitsu competition that day. So I can't be there.)
Karen Davila featured this hospital in last week's anniversary presentation of "The Correspondents." Here is a bit of it: http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=YwKBZJTpeRQ featuring Nestor Bonifacio. Nestor is the best person to talk about Fuda. Anyone interested should communicate with him. He loves to tell his story and help people find their way to Fuda.
I am not getting any money for sharing this all with you. I am compelled to share because I know we all know someone who is suffering with cancer and suffering from the treatments for cancer. If this message helps just one person have a better quality of life as they live with cancer, then I'd have done a very very good deed.
One last line I remember from the Fuda webpage: Treat the patient, not the disease.
Please forward this to anyone with a family member with cancer.

An urgent reminder
New Robbery Method used in Ladie's Restroom
Ladies...please take care!
New theft technique.Just received this latest theft technique used by robbers. It seems feasible so take heed.
Warning to all the ladies out there; and men please inform your significant other. (And, hey, it could happen to the guys!)
The Latest Scam: Robbing Females using the restroom/'ladies' /bathroom at a Shopping Mall... ....
The way the scam works, a man slips into a women's rest room and sneaks into a unit. He waits until there is only one woman in the restroom in a neighbouring unit/stall.
The criminal then stands on the toilet seat and points a hand gun into the next unit/stall, demanding the woman's valuables. After getting her cash and jewellery, he demands that she removes all of her clothing and kicks them out of the unit/stall. The thief tosses the clothing into a shopping bag, hangs an 'out of order sign' on the restroom door outside, and slips back into the mall.. The 'out of order sign' ensures no one will soon come to the woman's rescue. It usually takes an hour or two for the woman to work up the nerve to leave the rest room in the nude, giving the criminal ample time to make his get away. The woman is left naked humiliated in a mall full of strangers.
The best defence, says police, is to never go into a shopping mall restroom alone, as only women who are by themselves are targeted.
PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW.
This has so far been a nearly perfect crime, as none of the perpetrators have been caught.
Don't let this happen to another woman.

Denmark is a big shameThe sea is stained in red and in the mean while its not because of the climate effects of nature.
It's because of the cruelty that the human beings (civilised human) kill hundreds of the famous and intelligent Calderon dolphins.
This happens every year in Feroe iland in Denmark . In this slaughter the main participants are young teens.WHY?To show that
they are adults and mature.... BULLLLsh
In this big celebration, nothing is missing for the fun. Everyone is participating in one way or the other, killing or looking at the cruelty “supporting like a spectatorâ€
Is it necessary to mention that the dolphin calderon, like all the other species of
dolphins, it’s near instinction and they get near men to play and interact. In a way of PURE friendship
They don’t die instantly; they are cut 1, 2 or 3 times with thick hocks. And at that time the dolphins produce a grim extremely compatible with the cry of a new born child.
But he suffers and there’s no compassion till this sweet being slowly dies in its own blood
Its enough! We will send this mail until this email arrives in any association defending the animals, we won’t only read. That would make us accomplices, viewers.

The killer Cancer,
for the longest time, has been a death sentence, a nightmare for even
those who are wide awake, for both the victims and their families. It
was a quick ticket headed to a place where people wear no hair,
injections become part of a daily routine and where deterioration
accelerates geometrically. Statistics show 104 people die of cancer
each day, four in every hour. This is a place—with no exits. That was
then.
Until correspondent Karen Davila traveled to Fuda Cancer Hospital, in the City of Guangzhou China,
a fast-rising mecca for cancer-patient hopefuls from different corners
of the world, with one wish: to find a cure, the key to a better life.
With its state-of-the-art technology
and backed up by one of the most advanced researches done in the field
of cancer—Fuda Cancer Hospital is proud to introduce the new
cryo-surgery. The tumor is injected with cryoprobe that causes the
tumor to harden. The hardened tumor is then melted. Meanwhile,
remaining tumor particles then undergo the brachytherapy where
radioactive iodine seeds are injected into the particles, completely
ridding the body of these cancer cells.
It is at this point in
their lives that we met with Nestor Bonifacio, 69 years old. He almost
lost his ability to talk and walk, he is no stranger to cancer
treatments and medicine from America, then he found Fuda. Today he is a
stage-4 prostate cancer survivor.
Kathleen
David, 41 years old, cancer started spreading from her breast to her
brain, eyes, lungs and liver. She has undergone numerous chemotherapies
to no avail, then she found Fuda. Today, she is a breast cancer survivor.
While others share stories of success in the treatment of cancer, Conchita, 66 years old, stricken with stage 4 lung cancer---is still in the process of writing her own cancer survival story--- as she continues her treatment at Fuda.
As
the statistics of cancer deaths continue to rise, and it is only
logical that it will continue to do so in the next few years--- a new
statistic is undeniably taking form. A statistic that tells us: “yes,
it can be cured” and ultimately: “yes, there is life after cancer.” Now
that is the statistic everyone looks forward to getting!
This
November, in celebration of “The Correspondents’” 11 years on-air, 11
years of unprecedented tradition of excellence in journalism, 11 years
of commitment in bringing you the latest and most comprehensive reviews
of the issues that matter today --- together with Karen Davila, we take
you to Guangzhou, China, to a place where cancer is not spelled as
E-N-D, but as H-O-P-E.
Watch “The Correspondents’” 11th anniversary presentation on Tuesday (Nov 17), right after “Bandila” on ABS-CBN.

10 Craziest Hotels in the World
Capsule Hotel, Netherlands: a hotel made out of a survival pod
Your own survival pod! Escape pod hotel in a city centre dock location. Moored in The Hague, your room is a bright orange survival pod which once saw service on an oil rig platform. Originally built in 1972 they are 4.25 metres in diameter and unaltered apart
from the addition of a lock on the outside and an ‘emergency' chemical toilet inside. While not everyone's luxury choice, each pod provides cosy protection from the elements for up to three occupants.
First created for accommodation as an art project in 2004, owner Denis Oudendijk has 8 different models ready for use and is currently working on additional locations in central Amsterdam and Nantes, France.
Everland, Paris: a hotel which parks in unusual places with amazing views
Everland is a hotel with only one room including a bathroom, a king-size bed and a lounge. What makes it so different is that - because it is also an art installation - this hotel travels! The Everland has been ‘parked' in the most unsual places, like the roof-deck
of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig, Germany, or the roof of Palais de Tokyo (with a spectacular view on the Eiffel Tower) in Paris.
Considering how unique a night in this hotel is, the price is not so crazy: you can get the only room and the unique view for 333 Euros during the week, 444 Euros during the weekends.
Hôtel de Glace, Canada – an ice hotel opened only during winter
Made entirely of ice and snow, this unique one-story structure has been rebuilt each year since 2000. The 9th season of the Ice Hotel lasted from January 4th through March 29th 2009. The Ice Hotel has become an unparalleled and world-famous winter experience.
It takes 5 weeks, 500 tons of ice, and 15,000 tons of snow to craft the Ice Hotel with its ceilings as high as 18 feet, walls covered with original artwork and furniture carved from ice blocks.
Waterworld Hotel, China – an amazing aquatic themed hotel
Atkin's Architecture Group won first prize for an international design competition with this stunning entry. Set in a spectacular water filled quarry in Songjiang, China, the 400 bed resort hotel is uniquely constructed within the natural elements of the quarry.
Underwater public areas and guest rooms add to the uniqueness, but the resort also boasts cafes, restaurants and sporting facilities..
Sala Silvergruva, Sweden: a single room hotel inside a silver mine
Picture this… A single suite, 155m underground in historic Sala Silvermine, one of the world's best preserved mine settings. (During its heyday, production amounted to more than 3 tons of silver a year and a total of more than 400 tons of silver and about 40,000
tons of lead were extracted - completely by hand!) If you wake up in the middle of the night and have to use the bathroom, make sure you turn right or else you'll end up exploring dark winding galleries, vast caverns and magic lakes.
Das Park Hotel, Austria: a hotel where rooms are made of concrete pipes
A hotel with rooms made of giant concrete sewage pipes might sound a little odd, but this artistic creation can be recreated to provide cheap lodging anywhere. These 9,5 tonne concrete sections are a standard item in near all concrete factories and the oden
floors, a really comfortable double bed, minibar and room service through to 1am. For night owls, the reception is open 24hrs. With the amazing view below there is little else needed, except if you're staying in bed past 10am, when pajamas would be a wise
thing to wear, as although you can look out - tourists can look in
The De Vrouwe van Stavoren Hotel, Netherlands: a hotel made from recycled wine barrels
The De Vrouwe van Stavoren Hotel in the Netherlands salvaged four wine casks from Switzerland and converted them into rooms. Formerly filled with 14,500 liters of Beaujolais wine from the French chateau, each now holds a modest two-person room with standard
amenities and even an attached bathroom and a sitting room.
The one thing that might bother you, if you're not a wine enthusiast, is the smell of wine that the barrels still maintain. All in all the Barrel Hotel, in Stavoren, northern Netherlands, makes for a very pleasurable experience. General rates for a cask room
are from 74-119 Euros a night with discounts of up to 75% off depending on season. If you go in the wintertime, a wine cask room can be as low as 18 Euros a night, cheaper than most hostels.
Giraffe Manor, Kenya: a hotel where you dine with a friendly giraffe
This small and exclusive hotel -- surrounded by 140 acres of indigenous forest just outside Nairobi -- is famous for its resident herd of giraffe. It's the only place in the world where you can enjoy the experience of feeding and photographing the giraffe over
the breakfast table, at the front door or while you dine, and the giraffes poke their heads through the window.
As well as the giraffe, the property is also home to many species of birds, large families of warthogs and the elusive Bush Buck.
Hotel Im Wasserturm, Germany: a hotel inside a water tower
Rising high above Cologne, this international luxury hotel was once the largest water tower in 19th century Europe. In 1990, French designer Andrée Putman transformed it into an elegant 78-room hotel.
Classified as a heritage site, the timeless modern design still manages to preserve the water-tower architecture and a sense of refuge and protection.
Jumbo Hostel (Stockholm): World's First Aircraft Inn
Stockholm is the house of this wacky hotel, the first aircraft inn. An abandoned Boeing 747 jumbo jet has been saved from being trashed metal to become a 25-room hotel sited in Stockholm-Arlanda airport. Each room is bare 65 square ft big and furnished with
bunk beds, overhead luggage storage and flat-screen TVs. There is a reception area and a cafe with toilets and showers at the rear of the aircraft, which means that you will have to share! The upper deck is a conference room and the best of all, the cockpit,
is where the wedding suite is housed. Not a very comfy hotel I would think, but staying there just to get a feel of it might be cool.

Just to add, we're looking for durable, experienced Java programmers with excellent communication skills. Your help is much appreciated.
My company is looking to outsource computer programmers from the Philippines . We will be in Manila from 11/16 to 12/4. If you have any relatives or friends that are programmers, please send me their contact information and we can set up an interview.
Since everyone is looking for new household help, please beware.
Our house was robbed yesterday before lunch, all of our jewelries, some clothes, bags, my daughter’s rechargeable light with fan and radio, digital camera, cash, credit card, cellphone, two bags of clothes for undoy victims and Samsung flat t.v. were taken.
The person responsible for this is our daughter’s nanny, witness told me and the police that there was a blue green Honda CRV parked at our house, she was seen with two men, one tall and one heavy built wearing a beige baseball cap, this took place while me & my wife were at our workplace, only my mom and our 2 year old daughter were present at our house during the robbery.
Thank God they were not harmed or taken, to think we live in a very strict and secure village, these people are highly organized and have access to different villages.
Im sending you guys this message and picture so that u can avoid harm and possibly prevent this from happening again or be of help to the authorities to be able to arrest her and her accomplices, we know her as Marriane Bollongay (picture attached)
We recruited her from IVYLANA Manpower Services or ILMS located at 48 B Kamias Road, West Kamias, Q.C.

How sad. Â Except for Makati, t looks more or less the same as it is now, 50 years later.
