Hey, we've got some great news this week, so let's get started!

Of course, the biggest event in town is the Cherokee National Holiday! If you're
planning on coming to Tahlequah this weekend you may need to know what is going

The September issue of the Cherokee Phoenix is online! Included is more
information regarding the new Constitution, as well as issues facing the

We stand as one people for our sacred lands, side by side as one nation. Indigenous people unite in fighting for our rights and for what was once, our land. As we stand as one, it doesn�t matter where we are on Turtle Island. We belong to hundreds of different nations, Cherokee, Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Ponca, Dine, Hopi, Apache, Pueblo, Mohawk, Seminole, Shoshone, Pawnee, Nez Perce or Crow, we are all one nation, one land, one people. Is this dream that came to me, �Indigenous people, One Nation� from a time so far in the past, or a reality yet to come? Can we in fact be One Nation and stand side by side, fighting for what�s right?

Our ancestors fought for these lands, thousands lost their lives defending it. Now they are once again subjected to the hands of the white man, only now it�s digging them up to study them. This disrespect of grave robbing and putting our ancestors on display does not occur to any other people, but ours. The white man�s courts fight us, when we cry regarding the continual desecration of our sacred sites and disrespect to our people. They stole our lands, broke our treaties and continue to take what is not theirs. They disrespect our sacred sites by flooding, building disgraceful bars, ski resorts, climbing on, or bulldozing for new buildings. Many of these people claim they are honoring us, if this is honor, I don�t accept. Honor is standing up for the rights of your people, giving your life fighting to protect them, fighting for what you believe in and fighting for beliefs and spirituality. Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, Geronimo, Chief Joseph and the thousands of warriors that gave their lives for the people, they had honor.

Our sacred lands are all that remain keeping us connected to our place on Mother Earth, to our spirituality, our heritage and our lands; what�s left of them. If they take it all away, what will remain except a vague memory of a past so forgotten? Our sacred sites represent who we are as a people, connect us to our ancestors and to the Creator. If these places vanish where we go to pray, to fast, to speak with our ancestors, to dance, where our ancestors are laid to rest, we as a people will be no more. For 514 years the white man has tried to exterminate us, assimilate us and now attempting to wipe out all we have left; our sacred sites and spirituality.

Will you stand by and let them take all that remains of our being? Will you let them continue to desecrate our sacred lands? Or, will you take a stand and say no more?!

Every Tribal Nation is being subjected to this dishonor, disrespect and potential annihilation of our sacred sites and heritage. We must stand in unity side-by-side, as one nation, one people, one land, all across Turtle Island. It has come time for the division among our people to end and for everyone to come together. It doesn�t matter what nation you are from, how much blood quantum you have, or if you live on the rez or not. We have a chance to make a difference for our people in strength and unity as �Indigenous people, One Nation.�

Please help this dream become a reality, take a stand, protect our sacred lands and sites, before everything as we know it, becomes just another lie in the chapters of history.

I am depressed as of now.

I was just told several hours ago, via, an IM that one of my late husbands' family passed away, yesterday, after being in an a comma. She had been in a car wreck several,several months ago.

So, Now I feel like morning, as to what that is in Cherokee, I do not know.

I had to get off line and call my son on our cell,and have him call us here at our house.

As we still do not have Long Distant service in Texas, as of yet. They have not put it in the news paper here in Wichita falls, Texas, cause it is pending the funeral home.

But as it,is I will go in on the web site of our newspaper and send it out.

What is the Red Road ?

My own heart tells me that the Red Road is a personal journey to be shared. Many may agree or disagree. I believe that to walk the Red Road your heart has to be open to fault. You see with your soul, your mind is open to pain, and you are guided by your ancestors. The Great Spirit speaks thru them and thru them you learn what task you must complete before it is your turn to cross over. Thru my journey I have learned that I am not perfect and its ok to grow from one mistakes. I have learned that others will try to judge you, but only the Great Spirit can do so. I have learned that to open my heart may hurt, but it is the Great Spirit that heals. I have learned that my faults are lessons learned and taught to others. I have learned that no human being is reliable if they do not believe they are so. I have learned to trust what is good. I have learned that running from a problem will only make others suffer. I have learned to bring others before me, open my arms to them and allow them to share my abundance. I have learned I am still learning. I have learned that what I have learned from my elders I must share with the young. I have learned that being selfish does not make me better, it makes me weaker. In my journey, I have learned that to grieve is not selfish. To grieve is a way of passing. It is a way of growth. Allowing the loved one to move on, the heart that grieves, takes time to heal thru its grief. I have learned many things on my journey, and I will continue to open my heart, and my soul, so that my spirit will rest when it crosses over. This is the road that was chosen for me, and it is a road I choose freely.

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act public law 101-601 was created on November 16, 1990 to protect burial sites, cultural items, associated funerary objects,unassociated funerary objects, sacred objects and cultural patrimony of both Native American (which includes Alaskan) and Native Hawaiian people(s).

The NAGPRA law would require that specific guidelines be followed if a site is suspected or determined to be, a Native American site. This requires that the local tribes in which the site was found, must be consulted.

On July 28, 1996 a discovery of a 9,000-year-old skull was found on the Columbia River shore in Washington State. This discovery is now known as "Kennewick Man." This was documented as the oldest remains found and scientists immediately started to study them against the tribes wishes.

Several tribes in Washington including the Nez Perce, Umatilla and Yakama filed a appeal objecting to the remains being studied, they fought to stop the further disrespect and desecration of their ancestor, this case was fought in court for 10 years and unfortunately, recently lost.

A new bill announced on August 10, 2006 sponsored by Congressman Doc Hastings, seeks to make changes to the NAGPRA law. Hastings was quoted as follows;

"The fact that it took nearly a decade to reach a decision about the fate of Kennewick Man is proof positive that the law needs clarification," Hastings said in a statement. "Scientific study of ancient remains is important to our understanding of early history and can be done while respecting today's tribes."

The NAGPRA law was enacted to protect our ancestors and their sacred belongings. It was created to stop this type of desecration and disrespect of Native American sites.

We MUST let Hastings and Congress know that our Native Nations and Tribes of this country in addition to the citizens of the United States do not support this law change! The laws being modified in order to suit their studies or museums will not tolerated any longer!

If you support protecting sacred sites, burial grounds and want to halt to this potential law change, PLEASE support this petition by signing and forwarding it to everyone you know!

We must take a stand for change and end this continual disrespect of our ancestors!

Father, God, our almighty Father,who art in heaven.

Blessed be your name, and your sons; name, as you have been there for us all.

I come to ask you, to take our darling Serene Marie, in your open arms, which are held out

Give heaven another singing angel to watch over us all tonight.

And for those in pain, father, Guide us through the nite. And give us Strength for the coming days, as we wait patiently for her day, to be give up to you.

Father give us the joyous strength to carry on.

Walk with us, father, and guide us down that narrow path, into your Garden, so peaceful, so quiet. It is something for us to behold.

Fathers' garden, so peaceful, so quiet, and yet, I hear angels singing the background, and soft, sweet birds, singing to God, for what all it is worth.

People sometimes have a misconception of sacrifice. This is a strong word for Indian people. On the other side of sacrifice is another whole world. During sacrifice, our beliefs are tested. We may all have good beliefs but if you test a good belief, then you get real beliefs. Real beliefs make new people; real beliefs make new self images. Real beliefs allow determination and desires and faith to come true. Good is always available to us but we often can't bring it within until we let go of the old ways. We let go of the old ways by suffering. Suffering is only letting go of things that don't work anymore. On the other side of suffering is a new world.

Creator, help me to let go of old ways. Let my old thoughts and beliefs be abandoned. Every change is preceded by struggle. Help me go through the struggle today.

It has been said that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. But it is even truer that there is no hell more furious than those human beings who feel scorn within themselves. It is natural but painful for those who do not know the meaning of love to find fault and grief within their own existence. Unable to accept the blame for their actions, there is a continual search for the cause in other people.

How can we tell what point in life others may have reached in their development? We can only see and sense the pain that some carry while they learn the way. If it is impossible to get along with them, we should get along without them, but condemning them will never turn the tide.

Understanding of others and of ourselves has been a great human need for all time. The fact that we do not look with a critical eye, pecking away in constant irritation at another's faults, but give some sign of friendliness, some patience for rebellious spirits, may serve as the turning point for that spirit. And to try for such understanding does no harm for the one who makes the effort.
