SICK COW IN SIX-PINT BEER CURE
By Aidan Mcgurran
FARMER Tony Baskett saved his dying cow...with six pints of real ale a day.
Vets gave Lottie only a 50 per cent chance of recovery when she developed a
stomach blockage.
They said there was no cure through drugs but suggested brewer's yeast.
Using leftover slops from his local pub's beer casks, Mr Baskett began
feeding Lottie, three, the bizarre daily remedy.
Now, months on, the Hereford has made a miraculous recovery.
Mr Baskett said: "It's amazing. I honestly thought she would die because she
wouldn't eat.
"We've farmed for 48 years and never heard of beer being used like this."
Lottie got better as yeast micro-organisms in the Adnams beer kick-started
her digestion.
Brewery chief Jonathan Adnams said: "It's no surprise. Real ale is live -
like pro-biotic yoghurt."
Mr Baskett, of Theberton, Suffolk, has paid tribute by naming Lottie's calf
after the brewery.
