Subject: [Berlin Brigade Wall Watchers] Christmas

Dear Earl, hello Wallwatchers!
Very soon another year of our life comes to its end, time is speeding without
mercy. But before that we have Christmas again. It's the time to relax, to look
back, to be grateful that most of things ended fine for us. But also it's time
to remember old friends or family members who are not more with us! We also
should think on human beings who are lonely, suffer, are in permanent life
danger. Also it's time to stay behind 'weak' people, give them our attention,
a bit joy & a bit new hope. Life could be so nice but reality sometimes looks
an other way, alas.
Let's see Christmas again by the eyes of a little child and let us remember that
once we also have lived that time. Sometimes it's not bad to realize or remember
the main or most important things of life!
However, I'm grateful that we still are there and wish me that we continue our
friendship next year.
Thank you again for all your kind entries in my Guestbook, emails & replies on
this fine Message Board! If you like to 'walk on memory lane' again, visit my
website, you always are welcomed. ( www.berlin-brigade. de )

Merry Christmas, many nice happy hours of harmony & an Happy NEW YEAR are
wishing you Reinhard & family.

To Reinhard,my Berlin brother from across the big pond.I agree with the
compliments from Pam and Andy. For any members that have never seen Reinhard's
website, you don't know what you're missing.Check it out and then put it in My
Favorites saved links.I'm guessing that Reinhard has spent hundreds if not
thousands of hours in his traveling to take the pictures, editing and researching
them, not to mention the cost out of his pocket to make this possible.
I had the pleasure of meeting Reinhard, his lovely wife Angela, and their friend
Andrea 2 years ago, when I was in Berlin. If you look at one of the parts of his
website, you'll see a picture of him and myself toasting in his living room (with
mugs of coffee).
*********************************************************************

Andy, you're not being selfish with asking for our members prayers for your son.I
hope and pray that he (and you)can see your dreams of visiting Berlin become a
reality.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to all of our members, their families, and any
of our servicemen and servicewomen serving in harm's way.Earl Bonenblust

It's been 37 years since I spent Christmas in Berlin but I remember it like it
was yesterday. Everyone please pray for our troops and remember freedom isn't
free. Our nations leaders also need our prayers in dealing with our nations'
problems, which are many and complex. I hope it is not selfish of me to ask for
everyone's prayers for my 20 year old son who(by his own choice) is at present
in a drug addiction recovery center. I saw one of his worksheet that ask him to
list places he wants to visit when he becomes sober and his first choice is
Berlin. I hope to help him realize this dream someday and share the trip with
him. Merry Christmas and a Joyous New year to all.

Thank you Tim & Richard; I surfed "The New Building of Federal Archives..and was
amazed at the transformation that will take place at Andrews, well, I guess the
name Andrews Barracks will slip into the past.  I wonder what they will
do with the two Nazi soldiers that are standing guard in front (and covered in
concrete). Thanks so much for the information.

I have some pictures of buildings being torn down there from 2007. I'll see if I
can post them.

If you want to visit Andrews, they will not officially let you in. But, if you
tell them you want to go to the visitors center they will give you a pass to go
through. Usually you will run into someone working there from the old days who
will fill you in on all that has been going on and all that is going on

Man, my jaw dropped. I know there are pictures of apartments on most of the
property now, but the German Government has 'Big' plans for the site. And, yes,
it was still building 901 when I was there, in fact the plans call for the
half of the building that we lived in to be demolished.. .well check it out for

with anyone that still lives in berlin to check it out for us...

At my PTSD group I posed the "how much was your combat pay?"   Well, found out
that the Marines lives were only worth $25 extra a month. And us Army guys were
worth $65 a month, but still found it funny that seperate rations were worth
$125 a month extra. This is from 1967 to 1972, except the Air Farce guy got $125
for his combat pay in 1972.
I used that extra $125 a month to buy a lot of curry wurst...

Dennis.... the 592nd was at one end of the building and the M.P. Co. was at the
other end. I think it was a 'new' barracks compared to the old Nazi one across
the street, it was where we stored some ammo crates. I think it was the last of
the 'barracks' from the Nazis' unless you remember more about the buildings.
From the pictures I've seen, the pool and the building with the Snack bar, and
Special Services were originals. The barracks with the ammo crates had these
cool murals of war in the what I think was the 'mess hall'. It also had dirt
floors at that time. Do you know if there are any surviving pictures of the
inside of the old SS barracks?
I really enjoyed my tour there, we had a great 1st Sgt., Loveless, I think
was his name, and our C.O. was Capt. Moore. Our coom center was run  by a W.O.
we called 'Chicken Man', cause he was so...well..not a very strong leader.
S/Sgt. Stiles on the other hand was at times nasty..We worked two 12 hour
shifts when I finally got my 'Top Secret' clearance. Before that happened I was
in the HHC of 2/6th Inf. but they didn't have a slot for me, I was given a
company clerks MOS cause I could type. The Co.. had alson just started their
roataion in the 'Zone' so I got permission to be a life guard at the pool at
Andrews, solved their billiting issue, where I lived until I got my
clearance.
I do remember changing Generals while there. Got up close and personel with
him 1st at the pool then later in 'his' comm center. Oh yea, I was a 72B
Teletype Operator. Until we got enough men to run 3 shifts we did the 2-12 hrs,
didn't see the sun for a week at a time. One guy I served with in Korea came to
Berlin later too, it was nice to see a familar face..
Really sad that none of that is left, just the pool, and the Church(?). Even
the really cool bars are gone...but at least the curry wurst stands remain...

This is what this Group should be about, sharing the lighter side of our time in
Berlin or the Army in general and being there as a friend to lend a caring ear
or to share our grief. We all have different beliefs about religion or politics
and come from different places but for one reason or another we all served our
Country, something like only 1% of the population has done. That in my eyes
makes all of us something special and in a situation where we should not be
bickering like children over differences of opinion.
None of us truly knows what the other has gone through in their life, be it joy
or sorry. Let’s keep this group what it was intended to be, a place to find
long lost friends, keep in touch with old friends, make new ones and share the
“Good old days”.  Warren

Hi Earl,
My prayers are with you, especially today. The loss of a family member or friend
is always extra hard at this time of the year. Today a close friend who used to
be my driver at Grafenwoehr called to say the doc told him today he has, at
most, a year to live from brain cancer discovered 2 weeks ago. He's only 44 &
married, with 2 kids. As I work daily at Ft. Bragg's hospital and see so many
sick folks much younger than I (soon 71), I see the truth in that saying about
each new day being a gift, & that each of us is only a heartbeat away from

At my PTSD group I posed the "how much was your combat pay?"   Well, found out
that the Marines lives were only worth $25 extra a month. And us Army guys were
worth $65 a month, but still found it funny that seperate rations were worth
$125 a month extra. This is from 1967 to 1972, except the Air Farce guy got $125
for his combat pay in 1972.
I used that extra $125 a month to buy a lot of curry wurst...

How many of you were BROKE, three minutes after being paid? Later, when assigned
to Medical Company, 6 Infantry, which became MedPlt HHC/3/6 a little later, they
had the 'gauntlet' that you had to run, BEFORE you got out of there (KP, BARBER,

To all of you who did get 'bumped' by LOL (see? pc), I was under the impression
that each morning AND several times a day, 'THEY' would get their files out and
'hone' their elbows! 5'11" and be next to a LOL 4'0" and you know that their
elbow is KIDNEY high!
I am and always have been (cough, cough, smirk, giggle wink, wink) a gentleman.
One day waiting for the A1, I let all of those of the female persuasion, on
board before I put my foot on the step AND WHAM OUT OF NO WHERE, AN ELBOW NAILS
ME! I swear that ten seconds prior to that, there was no one with in fifty feet
of me She had to have broken the sound barrier to be able to do that! After
that, I waited until the doors were starting to close, to make my move - that
was later, earlier, I would make that 'fantastic' leap, grab the pole and get
cussed out by the conductor. At least I knew that I was safe from any LOL in the

Pacifist.(Notice I didn't say Liberal?)If you want to continue stirring up
things, find somewhere else to do it!I am fed up with this crap!

For all the members that posted or contacted me with their supportive
words, thank you.And for all of our members that are reading about all of this
garbage,I'm sorry that you had to be exposed to it.
