July 11
The importance of being atheist
Presenter: David Barbour
Coordinator: Stephanie Doucette
On July 2nd, 2003 Katherine Hepburn passed away. The world lost a
fine person, an excellent actress and a confirmed atheist. This
service explores Ms. Hepburnís life, the positive aspects of atheism
and the reasons why a Unitarian congregation is better off with some
atheists and humanists. Along the way we find out about some atheist
resources and what is happening locally in the atheist community.
David Barbour is a member of BFUU and the newest member of our Sunday
Program Committee. During the past year he led the BFUU Choir.

UPCOMING SERVICES AT BFUU:

July 18
Art of Resistance: Seattle 2004
Presenter: Dawn Rose
Coordinator: Cynthia Johnson
What can a group of artists, poets and musicians show us as we look
for ways to honor life and democracy in this time of war? How do we
respond to challenges to integrate spiritual and community values
into our political and economic systems for the welfare of ourselves
and for all life on planet Earth. Let us come together to discover
the "art" of being prophets for our time.
Dawn has been a beloved member and religious educator at BFUU and we
welcome her back to our pulpit. She is a mother, grandmother,
Starr King graduate and still invites us to visit her in the
beautiful Sacramento Delta Country.

Changes: Creativity and Spiritual Growth
Presenters Members of the Congregation
Coordinator Frances Hillyard
Many changes are taking place in the Fellowship and in the lives of
individual members:
loss, growth, new perspectives.
How can we make the changes we face part of our spiritual growth?
Creativity is one of our greatest resources. Today some members will
share with us creative works dealing with changes in their lives.
Frances Hillyard is a member of BFUU and a Berkeley poet and
activist. She serves on the Sunday Program and Social Justice
Committees.
August 1
Transcendentalism For Today
Presenter: Hannah Wells
Coordinator: Stephanie Doucette
Who were the Transcendentalists of the 19th Century?
Many of them were Unitarians and religious liberals.
They believed in the highest standards of our human
capacities, but they were perhaps more interested in experiencing the
world than serving the world. Is Transcendentalism useful for us
today, or could it use a few revisions? With a
little tinkering and evaluation of our needs in the
modern world, we can find inspiration and direction in
an updated version of Transcendentalism for today.
Hannah Wells is a member of BFUU and a student at Starr King School
from the Ministry. She has been serving this year as ministerial
intern in Austin, TX.
August 8
Hiroshima Day: Creating a Community of Memory
Presenter: Laura Friedman
Coordinator: Megan Hailey-Dunsheath
We will come together to remember Hiroshima Day and to reflect on
life together in community. What role does memory have in our
community? How does world history and Fellowship history play a role
in who we are when we come together to form community?
Laura Friedman is a recent graduate from Starr King School for the
Ministry. Over the past four years, while attending Starr King, she
has come to consider the Fellowship her home congregation. This
sermon is her farewell to the congregation, as she is returning to
her home in Vancouver, Canada to pursue Unitarian Universalist
ministry.
August 15
Preparing for the November Elections
Presenter: Lee Lawrence
Coordinator: David Barbour
Come explore what is happening with the 2004 election and what we can
do for voter registration and regime change.
Lee Lawrence is a member of the UU Church of Berkeley in Kensington,
a friend of BFUU and a leader in the Pacific Central Districtís
Social Justice Committee.

Lessons from Haiti
Presenter: Leslie Fleming
Coordinator: Cynthia Johnson
200 years ago the slaves of Haiti overthrew their colonial masters
and the poor in Haiti again face that challenge. Join us today with
anthropologist Leslie Fleming to learn what is happening to the
amazingly strong people of Haiti.
Leslie is an instructor at Merritt College
and will have just returned from an accompaniment trip to Haiti.
She is also an active member of the Haiti Action Committee.

NEW MEETING GROUP FORMING AT BFUU
A group for families of soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan is
now forming. The purpose of the group is to allow family members to
discuss among themselves the many stresses and anxieties experienced
when loved ones have served or are currently serving in war zones.
While the group is not designed to be therapy, it will be led by
highly trained therapists who will facilitate its formation. The long
range goal is to address the symptoms of post traumatic stress
disorder and prevent prevent its transmission to other family
members. The group will be on-going and meet every week at the
Berkeley Unitarian Fellowship. For more information, please call Bill
Roller at (510) 525-9215.

ADMINISTRATOR IN SEARCH OF BERKELEY HOME
_______________________________________________
Hi everyone,
I'm still tyrying to move back to Berkeley in order to be closer to
the Fellowship, and am networking in case anyone knows of any places
for rent. What I'm looking for is a moderate to large size one
bedroom (or a HUGE studio)--either a cottage or low occupancy
apartment (up to about a 4-plex or 6-plex) and that takes cats
(mrow!). I'm currently paying $800, and can possibly go a little bit
higher if necessary. If anyone has any leads, please call or e-mail
me in the office or at home (510-452-0044 /
laurhot@...).
Thanks much,
Lauren
