It's mostly 15th and 16th century stuff, but it's pretty sweet:

I will not be out tonight, I had hoped to get my helm sorted out for next week FP, but I have to work instead as we have two people out today and another still on vacation, so they are moving our shifts around to cover. Have fun and be safe.

A&S Competition:

Titled Competition:

The competition for the Artisan of Bryn Gwlad will be a single entry
with documentation. Artisans are encouraged to bring items that fit
the early Elizabethan theme of the event, but this is not required.
The Kingdom judging sheets will be used to score the entries.

  Senses Display:

A separate prize will be given for the display that appeals best to
the five senses. Think beyond just the sense of sight. Does the item
and the display appeal to the sense of touch, smell, sound, or taste?
Be creative, think with your eyes closed, and never be scared about
asking for a second opinion. Example: Written poem in calligraphy –
make a recording of you reading the poem and leave it on the table.

Artisans wishing to submit a paper for the competition need to submit
the paper to the current Bryn Gwlad Artisan, Mistress Hanna von Dahl
by January 17, 2010. Papers should be displayed with the static
pieces for others to read. If competitors want their papers read,
judged, and commented upon before the Kingdom A&S deadline of January
13, 2010, email Mistress Hanna ASAP.

Yall may not remember me, but I plan to be there tomorrow as well. I have kind of dropped off the planet due to real life stuff but I am just about ready to get back into the swing of things. I have some vembraces to finish and may have a helmet that needs strapping.

I was really looking forward to working in the shop tonight, but it seems that Artorius has a bit of a homework situation and we will be staying home this evening.

I started to write about the progress I made this weekend on several projects, but I decided I was starting to use this forum more like a blog, and if I'm going to write a blog I should really get my own.  So I created one at http://QuestingForTheDragon.blogspot.com/

My shield press is currently unoccupied if someone needs a new curved shield.  I'll probably we working in the garage Thursday from 7-9 if anyone needs help with a project.

I will be at armor workshop and I am planning on going to Saturday as well. I have a lot of things I need to get done on top of getting my fighting up to par before Gulf which I am palnning on going and perhaps one other event before Gulf as well. I think my main priority is my new shiled and making a new boss so tonight I need to focus and shaping a boss out and show my ideas of designs I want to put on the dacign of the shield. IF I can get that I am well on my way on my projects. Next I need to get new low profile arms done so the bazubands I have go away since right now they no longer protect my arms as well as they used to. Next I want to make some low profile half gaunts based on the wisbys. I am hoping that can be doable befor Gulf at least. Fianlly and I need to whip out at lest two more tunices and patns and make a focale or scard for my neck. I would like to replace my gorget however it is functional for the time being.. A long list I know... BTW I turn 35 tomorrow lol..

I will miss armouring again this week due to the Candlemas planning meeting, but if we wrap up early I might make a cameo appearance.  I have gotten a start on creasing the center ridge of my new helm and I've cleaned up the weld on my ridge-making tool. (Angle-grinders rule!) I should be able to keep making good progress on my own until I'm ready to cut out the spangen panels.  If I make really good progress this weekend I might be ready for that by next Wednesday.

Speaking of this weekend, I could run some open shop time on Saturday if anyone is interested.  Aedan, you could edge and gesso your shield. Any one with wood, leather, cloth or metal projects is welcome to come over starting at 10 AM and running until whenever.  I don't have a forge or anywhere near as many shaping forms as Gaston, but I have enough tools for many basic armouring projects.  Soup and sandwiches will be provided for lunch, barley porridge for dinner.  Sorry, no home-brew.  :(

I'll be cutting, edging and painting some flat shields, making another Dura-Europos- based shield grip (More fun with the angle grinder!), and trying to melt pine pitch to pour into a leather tumbler to seal the seams.  On the helm project I'll be shaping the ridge on the center band, marking and punching a lot of holes in the spangen frame, and assembling the frame with bolts.  That will lock in most of the measurements for the helm and allow me to make a good pattern for the panels.  I may cut and dish a panel out of 18g mild steel just to test the pattern before I cut into the 16g. 410 spring stainless.

Your calculations are correct.  It doesn't hurt to cut out the brow band an inch longer than you think you'll need and trim it down.  Things like rivets near the brow line will reduce how much space your noggin really has.  So I'd start with 29.5 and expect that some of that last inch might be wasted.  Does your brow band connect to itself by overlapping, or is it connected by a spangen strap?

I need to make a final decision on the circumference of my new helm.  My head is 23.5" in circumference at the brow line.  0.5" of padding is required.  My helm liner starts at close to 1" of padding when uncompressed but I expect it to compress some as I put the helm on, so I expect it to average close to 0.75".

A circle with c=23.5 has r= 3.74.  Lets round that up to 3.75.  Add 0.75 to that and I get 4.5.
A circle with r=4.5 has c= 28.26.

So should I build the helm with a 28.25 inch brow band, or round up to 28.5, or have I missed the boat completely?

Folks,
I won't be hosting an open shop this week, or the week of Christmas. The open
shop will run until just before Gulf War in mid March. I might do some other
stuff after that from time to time, like brewing or wood working, but if you
have armour projects that you need the shop to complete you have a few months
to wrap them up.
