Who here thinks they know what slam poetry is? Loud, vulgar words with confusing, erratic hand movements and an inexplicable Brooklyn accent? Right? WRONG. While that is sometimes the case, it is hardly the majority. Do you write poetry? Then you write slam poetry. They are one and the same. Ready to hear other poets, share your work, and improve yourself as a writer? Grab those poems and head down to:

For those of you that often read these updates, you know about the avid use of CAPS LOCK and bold text intended to DRAW YOUR ATTENTION AND REMIND YOU ABOUT POETRY THINGS. Alas, this month doesn't require such ploys. No jokes, anecdotes, or silly rouses will waste your time this month. All you need is the following paragraph:

At the two upcoming Big Tree Arts events, Slam of Steel on Wednesday 16, and Slam deLux on Monday 21, the featured poet will be Chris August, a man that is the current reigning champion of the Individual World Poetry Slam. If you come to these events, you will see a performance by a man that is literally the current reigning best slam poet in the world. I'll see you there.

A wise and fresh prince once wrote, "Every moment frontin' and maxin'/Chillin' in the car they spent all day waxin'/Leanin' to the side but you can't speed through/Two miles an hour so everybody sees you/There's an air of love and happiness/And this is the Fresh Prince's new definition of summer madness." And so, Boise Cultural Elite I ask, what is Summer to you? A calm and gentle break from the stresses of the school year? An opportunity to spend more quality, outdoor recreation time with those you are close to? A horrible whirlwind of screaming terror, as you desperately try to survive until you can send your kids back to school and reclaim your brief moments of solitary bliss? Whatever the case, the time has come upon us again. For the next three months, the kids are out of school, Roaring Springs is open, and at some point (June or July, I think) The Little League World Series will be on. Rejoice, and spend some of your extra free time writing and refining your beautiful poetic works, and we'll see you at the fantastic events Big Tree Arts has lined up all summer long

Sometimes when I find myself eating a particularly spectacular sandwich, I ask myself, "Self, what could possibly be better than this sandwich?" The answer is always the same. Two sandwiches. It was by this same principle that Big Tree Arts planned the upcoming Poetry Slam deLux for you, the Boise Cultural Elite. Not only will their be a performance by world class poetic talent Chris Gilpin, but there will also be an acoustic performance by lightly bearded and heavily talented local musician Haven David Snow. Double the feature, double the fun.

Are you like me? Are repressed feelings of insane patriotism disrupting your daily duties? Have you begun pawning your belongings in order to purchase more war bonds? Have you etched the lyrics to "Grand Ol' Flag" into the meat of your thigh during a patriotic stupor?  Do you awake 4-6 times per night drenched in sweat screaming the Pledge of Allegiance? What better way to express and proclaim your passion than onstage at Slam of Steel: Freedom Edition tomorrow night at Woman of Steel Gallery? As an added bonus, any poet inserting "Freedom", "Betsy Ross" or "Boston Massacre" into their poem will receive a bonus point added to their score!*

When was the last time you competed for a national championship? Of any kind. Collegiate bowling ? Chicken wing consumption ? Snowball fights ? How about SLAM POETRY ? One week from today, five representatives from your very own slam poetry scene are heading to Charlotte, North Carolina to compete for your honor in the National Poetry Slam. These poets got this opportunity by competing in slams around Boise that are detailed in these very e-mail updates. Do you get my meaning? You too, the casual member of the Boise Cultural Elite could be heading to Charlotte, North Carolina, home of the NASCAR Hall of Fame , R&B singers K-Ci & Jo-Jo , and the worst statistical team in the history of the NBA, the Charlotte Bobcats . Come to slams! Compete! Get points! Be a champion!

Usually these messages begin with a robust, exclamation point riddled greeting, and are filled with mildly amusing japes and references, often using bold text and the occasional hyperlink for emphasis. But not this month. There is too much to be said. Prepare for the news.

  1. Poetry Slam deLux is at the awesome Pengilly's Saloon this month, which is not Neurolux Lounge. If you go to Neurolux ready to hear some poetry, you follow directions poorly. Walk five blocks to Pengilly's.
  2. At Slam of Steel next week, we are launching a brand new competition that has literally never happened anywhere called the Anarchy Art Slam. It's a head to head battle between two completely unrelated artists, competing for the applause of the audience. Sounds pretty neat, huh? Wanna compete? Do you do something? Like play melodica, make matrimonial headdresses, paint pictures of Paul Reubens, or do tai chi whilst drinking chai tea? Contact us, and we'll get you on the bill. Also, Slam of Steel is still happening as scheduled. This is just an extra bit of fun. Like when Prince played at the Super Bowl.

What:  Poetry Slam deLux!
When:  Monday, September 17; sign-ups at 7:30, SLAM@8!
Where:  Pengilly's Saloon, 513 Main st.
Cost:  $5 at door

The first order of business is telling you that Slam of Steel featuring singer/songwriter Phoebe Hoffman is one week from tomorrow! The second order of business is telling you about points. Points are accrued throughout the year—that is, the poetry year—in which poets earn three points for first place, two points for second place, and one point for third place starting at the first slam in May. Top eight point-getters at the end of the poetry year compete in April at Poetry Slam deLux for one of four spots on the Nationals Team. This year, Nationals is in Boston, Massachusetts! It's not too late to start earning points! Check out our current point tally and we'll see you at Steel on February 6:

It's 10:54am and I sit here on a giant beanbag pondering what to write in the next poetry update. Suddenly I remember Valentines Day is coming up! I think, "Why gosh, I could relate the update to Valentines Day. I could say something like 'Hey folks! With Valentines Day a mere THREE days away, you may not realize that Poetry Slam deLux is SEVEN days away! You're probably hung up on what to get that special someone or what to get yourself in honor of not having to put up with that 'special someone' who's always touching your stuff and eating your food and distracting you while you're trying to do important things or you may be pondering the perfect gift for mom or dad or your lovely grandmother or your child or your sister or your cousin or your puppy or your goldfish. Well I'm here to tell you not to worry! The perfect Valentines present is obviously an evening out to a poetry slam! So don't fret and don't sweat. Slam deLux and Slam of Steel will make your sweetheart's heart swell." Now say that five times fast. And then I think, "But that's a lot of writing and I'd really rather spend my time writing a poem so I can compete and earn points towards finals so I'm in the top eight come April when it's time to compete for a spot on the team that goes to Nationals."  And then I think, "I'm tired of thinking. I'll just send out the following information:"

Once again, points are listed at the bottom of this email. The way points work is that the top eight point-getters will compete at April's Poetry Slam deLux (April 15, 8pm) for one of four spots on the team to Nationals. This year, Nationals is in Boston. It's in August (exact dates yet to be announced). If you make the team, you will need to be around during the summer to practice and you will need to go to Boston in August. Poetry Slam deLux is tomorrow night (or tonight if you're reading this on Monday)! This is the second to last slam before finals and your second to last chance to earn points before finals! Poets have been accruing points all season and the top eight point-getters will compete at the April Poetry Slam deLux for one of four spots on the team to Nationals. Points are earned by receiving first, second, or third place at a slam. First place gets three points, second place gets two points, and third place gets one point. Right now, the top eight poets have points ranging from 5-16 so it's anybody's game!

In other news, the Event Manager (me), is still learning how to write poetry updates so pretend the last one said 'Update 8.10' instead of 'Update 9.0!'

Slam of Steel featuring singer/songwriter Gabe Hess is tomorrow night! This is your last chance to earn points before finals. Points are listed below and as you can see we currently have a three way tie for eighth place! Should there still be a tie following Wednesday's slam, those tied for eighth place will go into sudden death to determine a winner. That means if you're currently tied for eighth place or could possibly be tied for eighth place after Slam of Steel, have an extra poem ready!

(Also, please note that for Poetry Slam deLux you MUST be 21 or older to attend. We had a bit of a problem with this last month for whatever reason so please make sure you are at least 21 years of age or you will be turned away at the door.)
