Hello Everyone!
I'm working on getting the CMW Fall Newsletter out to print.
Does anyone have any alum news to report?
Please send any news to Lindsay Garner Hostetler at:

Thanks!
My roommate Heather is moving to Birmingham, AL to go to law school at
Sanford. Being from Tampa and just graduating from UF, she doesn't know
anyone up there and needs help finding a roommate. I thought our Merrie
Woode network might be able to help her out. She's hoping to live near the
campus in the Homewood area. If anyone knows of any students at Sanford or
young professionals that might want to live with her let me know. Heather's
an awesome girl and a great roommate.
Thanks for you help!!

I'm wondering if any of you live in NYC and/or work in advertising/marketing/sales up there. I'm graduating from UNC in May and am looking for a job up there...I went up for some interviews last wknd and am planning to be up there in the next few weeks. If any of you could offer some suggestions or have any contacts that you could put me in touch with I would really appreciate it!

We definitely still had gunga runga when I was a camper ('92-'97) and when I was a counselor one of the campers started a rumor that it was actually good for your skin so all of the younger girls would sit around covered in it during rest hour. I miss rest hour.
Was anyone there for the "snake summer". There was 1 year that it was really bad. They had to get some snake handler from town to come and take them away. I think that I can beat them all. I woke up to 2 snakes that were sleeping above my head. They were coiled up on top of each other and the screen was holding them from falling on me. I was in shock. Laurie told me later on that she was sure that I would not be returning for another summer.....but, I continued to come. Also, when Annie ran the docks there was a black snake that wouldn't leave the canoing dock. She wouldn't let us go out that day. He was swimming in like 2 feet of water so you could see him really well. There is nature at its finest:)

Oh, the snake stories! It's a wonder nobody was ever harmed by one (or were they?). I saw a rattler on a hiking path that I almost stepped on, a water moccasin swimming erect near the sailing dock, and, on several occasions "friendlier" black snakes one of which was wrapped around the rafters of Bum's Rest when I was a counselor.

I can remember my last dam swim, I dove off the canoe docks and a snake came swimming by - I'm not sure what scared me more, touching the bottom of the lake to get footing (haha) to get away from the snake or the snake itself.
That is some bonafide gross stuff - anyone know where the name came from?

my last year at camp was the year of snakes. I was a jc and was walking down the front line, saw a snake in the water think it was a water moccasin although i was told camp didnt have those. It followed us up and down the lake. Then my cabin mate got bit by a snake in our cabin (we were in the welcome lodge). We also had food in our cabin..big no no. Then she said she found the snake that bit her by the lake during rest hour, so one of the equestrian staff, came down and killed the snake with a paddle. HUGE drama. Mountaineering made an announcement at castle, saying it was an old black snake that had been there for years and you really shouldnt kill snakes, get a staff member to come and take it away from camp. It was crazy!

I remember one summer there was a big copperhead snake in the road between the tennis courts. One of the counslors, a woman we all called "Becker" (no idea what her first name was), took a rifle from the rifelry range and shot it while we all watched.
To this day I can still hardly believe that we had rifelry (very popular at the time) with real guns, real bullets, etc. I'm sure that insurance (and common sense) precludes that now.

I think it looks like newborn baby poop. Didn't know that as a camper but had the realization as a mom:)

That's a scary nightmare. I can't stand stepping in slimy stuff, let alone murky water. In Mississippi, we have it all over in the water. yuck!!

Thanks so much for including me in the distribution! How exciting to be moving back to the states though I would have a hard time leaving all the sights and sounds of Africa. That is truly my dream trip.
The kids are adorable! What blessings you have received!
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed new year.

Dear friends and family,
This time of year always reminds us for the things to be thankful for the little things in life.We chuckle at expressions our girls have come up with.Louisa, now almost 3, often asks, “Whobody done that?”And Josephine, 4 and half, is the proud creator of the “banana pig.”It is supposedly a creature that looks like a banana, but make no mistake about it, it has a snout and pointy, triangular ears. Louisa is our immerging singer and dancer, and Josephine is starting to read more quickly than I had realized when she pointed out that there was a box in storage with “toys” written on it.One little thing we are all excited about is our newest addition, Gideon John Koehring, born on August 18th.A sweet 10-pound baby, he will surely live up to his Old Testament name meaning “warrior,” or “destroyer.”Ralph stays busy with contracts at USAID, and has enjoyed working with his Zambian staff.Maryanna was happy to step in on a very part-time basis at the International School. But, alas, our big news is that our chapter in Zambia is drawing to a close. We have chosen to move back to the good ol’ US of A to Burlington, Vermont where Ralph will be the Contracts Officer with Immigration. We look forward to settling down for a bit to be closer to friends and family, but we will certainly miss the adventures of living overseas. We will remember with fondness the little things such as avocados, mangoes, the girls chewing on sugar cane, straw huts along the road, trips to Victoria Falls and Cape Town, carved handicrafts, lazy days by the pool, and the wide, bright Zambian smiles.Surely life is an adventure, and we look forward to its continuation in 2009.May God bless you and keep you in this coming year.
Sincerely, Ralph, Maryanna, Josephine, Louisa, and Gideon Koehring

That's so sweet Morrie. I still work at camp, but my stamina for 7 days a week
of trips plus
nights on Mt. Toxaway is not what it used to be. Memories like yours are what I
produce in
life. They are like footprints in the sand -- I wonder how much remains after
all these years.
I now have two granddaughters coming to camp this summer, and one of the
grandsons is
jealous!
I miss Hugh and Bunch and all the folks (most still with us) who made such a
difference.
Several of us gather each summer at the beginning or end of camp for hikes and
talk and
wine, including Martha Davis, Kate and Jean Stephenson, Charlotte Carol, Audrey
Townsend,
and others.
Stop by in Sewanee or Camp (I'll be working Main this summer).
Doug
I guess this officially qualifies me as being 'old' cause I remember
being devastated when we received 'the letter' from the Orrs stating
that they were going to close the camp. I had just finished my first
summer there and was looking forward to many more. I didn't make the
'79 camp session but came back for '80 and on and remember that
session as one of the most fun of my life. The camp was run on a
shoestring budget, we had pb&js, cold cuts and 'coke' on Sunday nights
since the cooking staff had the afternoon off. Doug and family
basically had to take over the canoeing program since Hugh had to run
the camp now but the traditions never changed. If anything, they just
got stronger and deeper. Memories like that make me thankful to have
grown up as a Merrie Woode girl. Thanks to Hugh, Doug and the silent
majority that refused to let Merrie Woode go down without a fight!

Hello all,
I am looking to sell my blue liquid logic trigger (kayak). It is in great
condition..I am only
selling it so that I can purchase a creek boat. It would make a great Christmas
present for a
camper, someone interested in purchasing a kayak for a lake house, an old
captain, etc.
Please let me know if you are interested and I can send you pictures. I am
asking $350
(o.b.o.) and am located in Asheville, NC. Cell# 817-919-0106
Hi, all.
It's probably easier to respond just to Lindsay. You don't have to hit "reply"
to send it out to everyone.

I was messing around on the internet and came across this website, with several references to Hugh Caldwell, Ray Eaton, Eve Hammett, etc., and Merrie Wood girls, that some of us old-timers from the 70s may remember...with pictures!
