Another Hedge Fund Breaks the Law - HBK Caught Short Selling Ahead of PIPES

posted by MR WAVETHEORY at 10/05/2006 12:34:00 AM
HBK is the latest hedge fund to be nailed by the Feds. The fund was caught short selling stocks ahead of their PIPEs. PIPEs are private investments in public equities - they are private stock offerings which means that investors agree not to short sell the stock ahead of the offering, because investors get access to private information. HBK abused the knowledge and short sold stocks of Plug Power Inc (Nasdaq PLUG).

In a typical PIPE deal, a small, cash-strapped company raises cash by selling discounted stock, or a bond that converts into discounted shares. Shares of the seller usually decline as investors anticipate a flood of discounted stock coming into the market. HBK got in trouble when it shorted shares of Plug Power Inc ahead of a PIPE in which it invested $58 million.

Over the past 5 1/2 years, HBK has invested $598 million in 104 PIPE deals, according to PlacementTracker. People familiar with HBK and the PIPEs market say it's reasonable to assume that HBK made between $50 million and $75 million from those investments.

The fund based in Dallas, Texas, manages $10 billion and employs 200 people. It was founded by Harlan B. Korenvaes, former Managing Director of Merrill Lynch in charge of the firm's convertible arbitrage trading and sales.

And thanks for all the time and effort you put in to make Mohican and Reena stay alive. Through your efforts I discovered two bunkmates. We had not talked or seen each other since early 1950! We had a mini reunion about a year ago. (We started at Mohican about the same year - 1939.) They thought I was dead. Needless to say they had some incorrect information. I just don't get to New York much.

I found an address for Irv Scheidlinger in California. His children, Bonnie and
Rob, went to camp with me through 1963. He broke into the Mess Hall and
"liberated" the plaque displayed on the website as well as several others that
his name appeared on. Hopefully he kept his when he moved to California. Letter
is in the mail.

If you go to the website, click on photos, then 1960 Yearbook, you will find all of the scanned photos in JPEG form.

Most of the plaques are long gone. I donated the 1938 to the American Museum of Jewish History in Philadelphia. Dave Rauch has two, and my mother's friend Irv Scheidlinger has a few that he stole after Mohican closed. He lives in California, and should be contacted. The rest of the Mohican plaques were presumably stored under the stage in the social Hall, which was burned in the early 1980's. With respect to the Reena plaques, during my visit in the early 1980's, I noticed that they had been painted over and used as bunk signs. I have looked around during my last few trips in the even year Palmer reunions, but none seem to be extant.

I'm also Jerry Silk's sister - Jerry is 3 years younger than Ken, who is 2 1/2 years younger than me.  I was  PC in '57 and a waitress in '58 as well as a counselor in' 60.  So figure it out.  They were both incredible swimmers and Color War stars in their respective groups.  I was a pretty good swimmer, too.  I guess it's a Silk family thing.  Sandy

Your job is to identify Tommy Kellner and anyone else in the photo. Also note Peter Gluck, the steward. I remember County Fair in 1963. They hauled his 1940's car, aka the Gluckmobile, onto the campus in front of the flagpole. Peter wasn't there that summer. For a ticket, you got a shot at it with a sledge hammer. The windows went fast. By the way Sandy Silk is Kenny Silk's sister. He might have also been a waiter in 1962.I can still taste the rolls baked by Gus Rugel, the long time baker.

Hey Robert, Jeff and anyone else still breathing:

Wexler here-I studied the 1960 pictures quite carefully. I'm fairly positive that the fella on the bottom left in the jacket presentation is Tommy Kelton. He was definitely a role model for me with the manner in which he handled centerfield some years later (62-63) and in general too. A lefty like me I suppose. After some thought, I believe the fella who is on the bottom second from right is none other than Bruce Gillers. Which one is Sandy Silk? The guy in the middle with Uncle Joe stumps me but after serious thought I sort of remember not Ronnie Pearl but maybe David something (pearl?) Also a very good athlete as I recall.

Jeff's pictures of the Palca brothers and the sophs/middies came through on the net very, very stretched thin to make it virtually unrecognizable for many. But I can identify some including you-Robert as well as Steve Berlin (I still am friendly), Andy Poses, David Fox, Jeff Palca and others but it would be great if you could reload those pictures somehow and I'm pretty sure most of the names will come back as Tommy Kelton did since those were simply the greatest summers of my life and the memories are seriously etched in the subconscious.

PS: I googled tommie, thomas Tom (middle initial M-I actually remember that) Kelton and felt that if he had received his 7 year jacket in 1960 and started camp (As I did) at 8 then he would have been born about 1945 (14-15 at the time) and would now be about 63-65. Found several important Tom Keltons. One is a high powered attorney in Texas that is 63 and the other was admitted to the bar in 2003 so I guess those aren't him. There was also one from Connecticut but the age didn't fit. Intelius is a super site to find people.
Happy and healthy new year to all!!

Oh my goodness, I was hoping to hear from one of you guys.  Fantastic.  We had a great group.  And you were my major competition for the part of Lola.  I remember they gave you that great Mambo number.  And Sue played the reporter.  And you and Tash and I were the three best swimmers.  Tash was in her own league but you and I had some great races during several color wars.

Anyway, have you been in touch at all with Ina, or Nancy Tash, or the Carols, Stephie, Rona, Ceci - who am I leaving out?   Carol and Stephie went to Brandeis, a year behind me so I kept up with them for a while. Am trying to visualize the PC and waitress bunks and who slept where.  I have some cute candids still in my old album from the waitress bunk.

I was peripherally involved with NY politics in the '70's for a few years.

I used to get down to FL every year when my Mother was alive and living in Delray Beach.  But she passed away in 1998 and I've only been down a couple of times since.  My aunt still lives in Boynton Beach and a good friend is in Boca.  Are you East or West Coast in Florida?

I don't go online very often so don't be offended if you don't hear from me for a week or two.  Will send you my aol address so we can go down memory lane and all the other folks here don't have to suffer through our memories and catching up on the last 50 years.

Hi, Sandy

I remember you - and didn't realize you had been at camp for so few years.  Other Fall River people whom I remember are Diane Bernstein (and her brother Leslie) and the Prial girls - Paula was my counselor one year.  Definitely remember Damn Yankees.  Like you I was disppointed my children couldn't go to Reena / Mohican.  They went to Watitoh in Becket, mass - as close to my memories as I could find.  Jason spent 8 summers as a camper and waiter - and one year as a counselor.  Joelle was there for 9 years as a camper.

Welcome to the website!
