Hi,

We just moved to the Twin Cities (White Bear Lake) from Ottawa this past June.

Back in Ottawa, it was an annual ritual to bring my vehicle into the rust proofing bay to get it oil sprayed, and I've done that for 10 years (usually at a place called Krown). I can't find any similar services here in Minnesota. Does anyone have any ideas of where I could get this type of rust proofing? The only type I can find is the Ziebart-style permanent coating, but I don't want to apply that to a 10-year old car.

Thanks for the help!

I haven't a clue.  I never heard of such a thing.  I thought new cars already came with rust proofing that was an extra cost?

Is this something commonly done in Ontario?

Most new cars here come with rust proofing from the manufacturer but the auto dealers always try to sell you "rust proofing" at the time of purchase.  That is a total waste of money.  I, too, have never heard of annual rust proofing in the States.  It must be an Ottawa or Ontario thing.

While there is no way to actually “rust proof” a vehicle, they are certainly built and protected much better these past couple decades than they were decades before. That being said, keep this in mind – the population of canada is similar to that of say New York, OR California and in many cases the car you buy from a North American manufacturer (including foreign companies BUILDING in the USA) shipped to Canada are the same as the cars produced for Florida, California, etc, and not always built to the standards we should see in the frozen northern climates, especially in the rust belt like Ontario. Granted, some manufacturers have special ‘pkgs’ for the northern set that include block heaters, etc, but the bodies are not sent through additional ‘dips’ in the protective coatings.
Also, annual oil spray rust “inhibitor” protections wee more popular years ago and been replaced by less leaky, staining products that have other properties and qualities made to leak/drip less, dry/harden less and thus require one time applications and they tend to not crack when hardened and actually trap moisture between them and the metals causing MORE rusting like the very old initial Ziebart products.
I worked in the auto industry for years and am very familiar with the “rust and dust” or whatever colourful term describes rust/paint/fab protections and there are differences with many of them and similarities amongst most of them, however, I have found the MOST important factor, even more so than price is WHO is doing the application and HOW WELL are they doing it? For the record, I have had it done an many of my new cars but made certain I paid a fair price, not the rediculous prices most dealers charge, and I made damn sure that I knew the guy doing the application and gave the bottle of liquor (or tip, or dinner cert, or whatever you may have tipped some service writer in the past for helping you out of a jam) to HIM! Since I have let my contact with that dealer grow apart, and since I now replace my new cars every few years, I no longer do that protection but if I were buying a car to own long term or possibly hand it down to family after I used it – I would still get some additional protection, done right, for the right price. Is it a significant improvement in protection? Not if its applied poorly, NO. Can it be? YES. Is it worth it retail priced for most drivers – I would believe not.
Sorry for the long rant, but I wanted there to be some objective, inside info posted on this.
Regards,
Larry

Based on my personal experiences with vehicle "rustproofing" in various areas of Canada and Ohio and Minnesota in the US, rustproofing of vehicles appears to only take place in Canada east of the Ontario/Manitoba Border.  I still drive a 1994 Ford Explorer and 1998 Ford Contour that were both bought new.  Each vehicle received Protectoil anti rust treatments fairly regularly.  Both vehicles, for their age and the fact that they were operated in provinces and states (Ontario, Ohio and Minnesota) where lots of salt is used, have remarkably good original bodies.  The Explorer also resided in Calgary for a little over 2 years.

I have not been able to find places in Ohio or Minnesota where this type of car "oiling" is done.  I think that the lack of this type of service in the US (even in the areas where salt is heavily used on the highways) is due to the fact that Americans generally keep their vehicles for a shorter time than do Canadians.  As cdnlarry states, vehicles built today are built and protected from rust perforation much better than even the mid 1990's vehicles I am currently driving.

As I understand it,  Protectoil is a non-petroleum based proprietary product (I think it used to be made by Sunoco) that inhibits rust formation by creeping into and coating the interior panels and crevices when it is sprayed inside these parts of a vehicle's inner anatomy.  The installer drills holes through the rockers panels and other areas and then sprays the product inside as I previously described.  The holes are then plugged and sealed with rubber plugs.
The vehicle drips for a few days after and usually requires an exterior wash a few times as well.  Protectoil is soluble in detergent and water.  I believe it works because it's sealed inside the vehicle's body rather than sprayed on the top as Ziebart used to be.

I believe that Phil Edmunston (of Lemon Aid fame) thought highly of this product.

The only thing that's similar that I know of is Rust Chek(?).  When I lived near Thunder Bay I had a couple of my company's vehicles sprayed to make their bodies last.  You can buy spray cans of Rust Chek for touch-ups or small rust proofing jobs at Canadian Tire.

Rust Chek may still be in Thunder Bay, so a trip north may be in order.  (It would also give you a chance to stock up on other Canadian delights such as Wagon Wheels, commercial jams and Coca Cola without high fructose corn syrup, President's Choice products, and Shreddies!)

Hope this helps your quest.

Mike

I believe Rust Check is still in Thunder Bay. They did very good work on my old F150 when I lived there for a brief period of time.

Boy do I miss the Presidents choice coffee (ok Tim’s is still better).

I was in my chiropractors office the other day, there was a 5 cent Canadian Tire note on the wall.

There's a Rust Check outfit in Duluth. Check the website, there may be dealers
in adjacent states that might be closer? http://www.rustcheck.com/. There's also
at least 3 places in Winnipeg if you want to drive that far.

Hi fellow Canadians, can any of you tell me if anyone still gets out sliding when it snows?  Seems to me it used to be 10:00 pm when it snowed at some Twin Cities parking lot.  If it still happens, when and where?

Regards Nathan Lise

Have no fear.  They will renew it 'cause there's money to be made.  They will renew it temporarily though until 1/31/2012.  That way if your visa is approved, you'll have to pay again to get your license renewed for one year.  With TNs, the DMV only renews one year at a time.

This is exactly right.  They will give you a license for a month, no problem.  And then make you get another once you get new documentation.

Things might have changed, but Florida used to allow Canadians to get a license for a year or maybe two even after changing the rules post 9-11.  But not if you had a TN/H1-B, etc.  They went by the date on the authorization.
