From all reports you do indeed save money buying in Canada.

Remember that you cannot actually buy a "brand new" car and import
it, but you can import a current year demo or program car.

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to US income taxes and I've got a question. I use my own car for
work and receive a travel reimbursement per mile from my employer. I also
receive a fixed amount monthly to cover my cellular phone bill. No taxes are
deducted from these forms of reimbursement over the course of the year.

Question: are these reimbursements supposed to be reported to IRS as "other
wage-type income" that aren't included on my W-2? Or am I not required to report
and pay taxes for these allowances? Hopefully the latter!

Thanks for your help.

Sean.

I general, if you are being reimbursed by your employer for an employment
related expense, it is non-taxable. It is not reported anywhere.

Dear Sean,

It appears to me that these are simple reimbursements and not subject to
tax. If the amounts are added to your wage income and taxed, then you would
have a deduction for the expenses. Check your W-2 when you receive it to be
sure these amounts are not being added to wages. You may want to check the
mileage amount you are being reimbursed to see if it is the federal rate.
If you are reimbursed at an amount less than that, you may have a deduction
for the difference.

Interesting side-note:

Fred Rogers and Ernie Coombs (Mr. Dressup) where good friends working
together developing kid's puppet show at a local TV station in
Pittsburgh in 50's when a Toronto station came looking for someone to
do the same in Canada.

They discussed it together and Fred told Mr. Dressup to go for it.

The rest is TV history. For both of them.

So I doubt that either was much in the "butt-kicking" frame of mind,
particularly with each other.

Just as a couple of points of order...

Zamboni was invented by Frank Zamboni from Utah (born and lived in Calif.)...
Baseball was created by Abner Doubleday (controversial yes) but no mention of a
Canadian anywhere (I couldn't find one either)...
Smarties (the candy coated chocolate ones) were invented in the UK...
the phone was invented by a Alexander Graham Bell who was born in Scotland and
moved to Canada but invented it while working in the US and paid for by the
US...
Alexander Fleming who discovered Penicillin was born in Scotland...
Velcro was invented by a Swiss engineer Gerge de Mestral
the zipper was invented by Whitcomb Judson of Chicago

The other list I saw had the polio vaccine but I see they took that off this
one...

these were all pointed out by my American co-workers...

Actually, the first baseball game was played in Beachville, Ontario one year
before it was played in Cooperstown. At least according to the historical
plaque near the baseball field.

Zamboni was invented by Frank Zamboni from Utah (born and lived in
Calif.)...
Baseball was created by Abner Doubleday (controversial yes) but no mention
of a Canadian anywhere (I couldn't find one either)...
Smarties (the candy coated chocolate ones) were invented in the UK...
the phone was invented by a Alexander Graham Bell who was born in Scotland

the US...

Abba is correct about the Zamboni. I worked for the Cdn builders (SMI
out of Montreal) and Frank Zamboni was (is) an American.

These "lists" are almost always poorly researched and sophomoric.

also will mention if you need a 'fix' to get on the ice (even though the
leagues are half done), there is a group that gets together thursdays at
noon (and at no charge including all skill levels) that will randomly
chooses teams by the luck of the draw and play 6 ends or so followed by
drinks and perhaps snacks. They are always open to new curlers to jump in
whenever possible.
Since I got a job (....sigh) I have missed the thursday noon group, but with
a slight recent schedule adjustment, may soon be there again.

ps. As shocking as it is, that is the only curling rink here. My exact
words3 or 4 yrs ago when Neil asked me about curling was, "Sure, would love
to join. Where is the nearest rink?" "ONE? One rink for 2.5 million
people????"

Hello to all you Canadians out there!
I am currently living in Toronto (transplanted
Torontonian..originally from the Maritimes) and I am currently in the
process of interviewing for a job in St. Paul. I have never been to
Minnesota, but will be going down for an interview in the next few
weeks. I have been doing some research on the city as well as the
surrounding areas and was wondering if any of you could provide some
information on the following:

1) Cost of Living in comparison to Toronto (I'm paying $1200+ for a 1
bedroom in Midtown TO). What can I expect to pay in twin cities?
What are some of the nicer neighborhoods/suburbs to live-in?
2) Generally speaking, how does the traffic compare (highways and
commuting time, ie. anywhere near as bad as 401 or Gardiner).
3) Closest area to ski (downhill)
4) Finally, any other pros and cons to living in the twin cites?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Hi we are from Guelph so close enough and I've lived in TO. (scarbouough,
markham area) I can only answer some of the questions. Housing shoud be
cheaper as we are paying a little more than you for a duplex-3 bedroom.
Housing advertise for more in house specials eg laundry, swimming pools,
exercise rooms...Bloomington is nice. There are a number of Canadians here!
We have 4 persons in our church (Bloomington Baptist) that are Canadian
besides us 2. That's a good percentage. You can't compare this city with
the bigness of TO but there are still times the 494 is busy. Somebody who
travels to work needs to answer that one. There is a little bunny hill in
town. Somebody else could probably help there. Pros-it is a nice place to
live. Very comparable weather, atmosphere-bloomington has a small town
atmosphere but maybe you want to live closer to work? The biggest accent
here is that roof and root are pronounced ruff and ruett. It's not as great
living this far away from home-to go home as those lucky Winnepegers are who
live 6 hours away from home. Research stuff on how your vehicle will be
allowed to stay here. Do what they suggest in the website to get an
american credit card. We had no credit card and no car for 7 months-a very
bitter experience. Hope the interview works out for you. The money is also
better here. There is a lot of recreation with all the lakes and parks
around here.
Chandra

Hi!

My husband and I are living here in the Twin Cities, been here for 6 years.
Lived in T.O. for 6 yrs. My husband is originally from T.O. and married me
(originally from Minneapolis). We currently own a 3 bdrm home in the
western suburbs (first ring, St.Louis Park) and have a mortgage payment close
to $1000.00. House is valued at $200,000. I do have plenty of friends that
rent out here in the burbs or western Minneapolis...... the 'lakes' area.
They pay about $800.00 for a 900 sq ft apartment 1/2 a block from Lake
Calhoun. Very nice area of 4 lakes all connected in the heart of the
city(Mpls) It is the place to be.......We love to watch my husband play in
his lacrosse league on the shores of Lake Calhoun.......remember the metro
area is not nearly as big as T.O. You can llive nearly anywhere in Mpls or
St.Paul and you are within a 20 minute drive from your destination. Highways
are a bit congested from 4 to 6pm, we are outgrowing our system here. But
it's really not that bad. There is light rail in the works, the first line
should be completed in 2004. Other than that, the bus system sucks. Better
have a car.
The Metro area is covered in biking hiking trails, lakes, rivers, creeks,
marshes, wildlife! I live 10 minutes to the west of Mpls and there are
plenty of deer jaunting about. We "are a city in the midst of a forest" as
my brother in law would put it (He's from T.O.). He came to visit us for the
first time this summer and thought he was walking into a gun toting concrete
city. Needless to say he was pleasantly pleased and is now considering
moving here. The western area would be Minnetonka, Hopkins, St. Louis Park,
and of course Minneapolis.
Minnesotans are generally nice people. By the time you check out grocery
shopping, you'll know your clerks name and the name of his/her kids and what
she's planning on doing that night. She may even invite you over for some
"Hot dish".

Closest skiing would be Buck Hill, south of the metro about 30 minutes or
Afton Alps which would be the same commute.

Hope you consider the Twin Cities......its a great place to live and work and
raise a family.

Hi Greg,

I grew up in Etobicoke during the 60's and 70's and find that living in the
MSP metro area is very close to the way Toronto was then. I live in Apple
Valley which is a southern suburb of St. Paul and less than 30 minutes from
my place of work in downtown St. Paul.

From here the airport is 20 minutes away, the Mall of America is 15 minutes
away and Buck Hill Ski Area is 10 minutes away. When there is no snow on the
ground Buck Hill makes their own and has been doing a booming business since
mid November.

The freeways are not nearly as wide as the 401 and most resemble the
Gardiner is width. During the hours of 7:00 AM to 8:30 AM northbound 35W and
77 are a real nightmare as is the 401 that you're used to. 35E north going
into St. Paul is usually trouble-free and moves along well even in rush hour
traffic.

The cost of living is comparable to what it is in TO (converted to US $)and
a 1 bedroom apartment will run about $800-900 per month in a nice complex.
One difference that you are sure to notice immediately is the absence of
high rise apartment buildings. Most apartment complexes are no taller than 3
or 4 floors. The most difficult part about moving into an apartment is the
vacancy rate, which in the south metro is very low. You should expect to be
asked for first and last months rent as well as a security deposit up front,
and a year long lease is typical. Rents usually rise 5-7% per year.

I hope this helps you.

Ken

On the topic of skiing, Buck Hill (as mentioned) is bunny hill stuff. Afton
Alps a little better (only golfed there, so far) and some decent basic
skiing up along the North Shore past Duluth. They have some great lodging up
that way, as well. makes for decent weekend retreat of skiing staying on the
slopes. My favorite skiing in Mn has been at Giants Ridge in the iron range
area (Biwabik, Eveleth, Hibbing) and I have only stayed in the hotels in the
small towns surrounding but there appears to be some nice lodging near the
ski area. This would be like having a few of the Thunder Bay hills in one
area all connected as there are three different peaks all connected from the
same valley ski center. Also has excellent cross country skiing there.

Hello,

I have never been to Toronto, but I spent three years working for the City
of St. Paul and several years working as a local ski instructor. Many enjoy
living in the Grand/Summit Avenue area of St. Paul. There is a wide range
of rentals available, although buying a house in that area can be expensive.
Surrounding suburbs include Roseville, Maplewood, Eagan..

You could easily live in Minneapolis and drive 20-30 minutes, depending on
time of day, into St. Paul for work.

People tend to call St. Paul a family town, or a government town. If you
are looking for nightlife, you might like Minneapolis better. St. Paul's
downtown area tends to empty at 5:00 sharp. However, for unique and diverse
family owned restaurants, St. Paul is the place to go. St. Paul also has
more of a neighborhood feel than Minneapolis does.

As for skiing, they say Minnesota skiers are better than most thanks to
being forced to learn on icey slopes. Most who enjoy mountain skiing won't
put up with the short slopes nearby, although there are two or three areas
within an hour or so of St. Paul that remain popular amongst diehards. They
are Afton Alps, Welch Village and Wild Mountain. For 1,000 - 1500 feet, you
can head 3-5 hours north to Giant's Ridge or Lutsen. Both are great for
weekend getaways. Most just fly to Colorado.

Good Luck!

Leah

The last I had heard on this, there were not enough people coming out. Did
you get enough players for full field or half field? What will the weekly
cost be? Is it pick up or are you going to have assigned teams?

Take care,
