And if you do decide to mess around, just remember the Towpath is a most
unforgiving place. In some areas you have just a few feet between
disaster lying on either side of the path.

You can ride with a lightweight sleeping bag(1 lb) or a silk sleeping bag liner
(couple of grams). This should not deter bikers. I am planing a ride now to
take advantage of the lock houses. Charlie

I'm so so SO tempted to get snow tires for my bike! I've been able to resist the
temptation so far, but it hasn't been easy!

The Washington DC area is currently buried under 17 - 21 inches of snow,
the largest December snowfall in recorded history. Only main arteries
have been cleared. Local side streets might have had one pass of the
snow plow. The city of Alexandria sent this email out to citizens just
an hour or two ago:

As you know, there are no snow removal operations on either the Canal
Towpath or on the Mount Vernon Trail. Under normal circumstances, it
usually takes several days of above freezing temperatures to fully clear
the Mount Vernon Trail, and there are spots such as the bridges near
National Airport, the area directly upstream of the 14th St. Bridge, and
the many wooden bridges between the Washington Sailing Marina and Mount
Vernon may retain snow and ice for many days after most of the trail has
melted clear.
If you want to travel on the Towpath or the area's bike trails right
now, bring cross country skis.

As of yesterday, 14 December, the Big Savage Tunnel between Frostburg, MD
and Meyersdale, PA is CLOSED for the winter.
It will reopen in early April of 2010.

I've been on the September tour with Adventure Cycling for the past two
years and would highly recommend them to anyone who is up for an awesome
ride without worrying about carrying their camping supplies and cooking
after a long day of cycling. In addition, the tour leaders are first class.
Thanks,
Jim

Cycling the C&O Canal and Great Allegany Passage.
Adventure Cycling Tours for the summer of 2010
Adventure Cycling has two fully supported camping trips
in the summer of 2010 on the C&O Canal, and Great Allegheny Passage.
I though members of this group would like to know about them.
From July 10th to July 16th we will be leading a group of
adults and kids on a ride through history. This is our first year for
this unique ride. We will meet in DC and bus to Cumberland and then
spend the next 6 days riding the C&O Canal back down to DC. This ride
will include several encounters with local history reenactors from a
16-year-old George Washington to Civil War solders about to enter the
1862 battle of Antietam. This trip is geared for Kids 10 to 18 who
are accompanied by an adult.
You can check it out at
http://www.adventurecycling.org/tours/tourdetail.cfm?t=EV10&id=180&p=1
On September 25 Adventure Cycling riders will meet in DC
and start our 7 day journey to Pittsburgh. This trip also has
several historical stops and presentations. You can check it out at
http://www.adventurecycling.org/tours/tourdetail.cfm?t=EV10&id=182&p=1
Please check the Testimonials and if you want a real
outside opinion check the USA Today story on this ride from 2009.

These trips are camping trips with an option of Indoor
accommodations. Our chef from the Culinary Insider will cater all of
our meals. They will be feeding our riders for the 3 year in a row.
If you have any questions or are interested in the trip
please feel free to contact me.
I hope to see you on the Canal and GAP.

Actually, since the lock houses tend to be relatively isolated and to not have
electrical power, wouldn't it be more like staying overnight in darkhouses? :)

I think that it is a pretty good and interesting idea. It will almost be like
staying overnight in a lighthouse.

It looks like it depends on which one, $70-100. The closer to DC, the more
expensive. The one to look for is when lockhouse opens up between Harper's and
White's Ferry. See:

I meant lockhouse 28, coming im mid-2010. Looking closer, the need to provide
one's own linens will make it harder for lightly traveling cyclists to use this
option.

A lot of discussions about helmets just never seem to include what
happen BEFORE the accident. In one case, the person can't remember
what happened. OK I get that a helmet was a good thing. I have seen
my share of riders on the C & O that get just as distracted riding the
trail as people texting while driving. For the folks whose son was
cut off in Japan, I am happy he will heal. I sincerely wish him a
speedy recovery. I (don't) see so many people on bicycles and on
motorcycles that simply do not dress to be seen. I ride motorcycles
and a bicycle. I wear a High Viz vest on both. On the bicycle, I
wear the screaming yellow outer gear. Whether I am on the motorcycle
or bicycle, I do dress to be seen. When I commute to work on my
bicycle, I have at least 5 sets of blinking lights. When riding the C
& O, it is still a really good thing to at least have high viz gear in
the pack. In the area the trail has been washed out, it is a pretty
narrow road you have to ride on. The cars don't seem to slow down
much for bicyclists. To bring this to an end, a helmet is 'Plan B -
After the Fact'. By bringing attention to myself and being seen,
seems like a pretty good 'Plan A - Avoidance'.
Ride Safe - I hope to SEE you on the trail!
Thanks for that email to the list, as I am happy to hear he will be fine in the
end.
Thanks for sharing that story.
Have a great Thanksgiving, as you are very thankful I am sure.
Mike

I know I'm pretty much preaching to the choir, but my son lives in Japan and
teaches English. On Monday, he went to pick up his "dream bike" custom ordered
Panasonic road bike. He was 20 minutes into a 30 minute ride home when he was
hit by a delivery truck that turned left in front of him into an alley. He was
in the bike lane which, in Hiroshima, is part of the sidewalk. His collarbone
was broken in 3 places but he had surgery Thursday to repair it and should make
a full recovery. Needless to say, if he had not had on his helmet, the outcome
would not have been good.
Oh, the bike was totaled, but the insurance company has already had the bike
shop guy order a new one. We'll need to send him (or he can order) a new helmet
from the US - can't get one in Japan large enough, but he won't need it for a
while . . . .
Sooo . . . ride with a helmet or not, but keep this and Mike's post in mind.

Here is a story about the signs being installed along the Passage
Tunnel vision
Cumberland Times-News
Kenney Signs employees Jack Logsdon, Billy Felker and Michael Kenney
install a sign at the Brush Tunnel Monday along the Great Allegheny
Passage. Interpretive historical signs, complete with photos, were
installed at 11 locations on the Maryland portion of the 150-mile long
trail, which runs from Cumberland to near Pittsburgh. Hikers and
bikers can also access the 182-mile C&O Canal towpath at Cumberland,
connecting them to Washington.
To see all of the signs on line check out the Mountain Maryland Trails
Web site. http://mmtrails.org/index.php/articles/124-history-along-the-trail
Thank you Brenda for doing such a good job keeping this site very
current.

My wife and I rode the Erie Canalway portion between Lockport and Palmyra and
back in September, so I looked for a Yahoo group as well. No such thing seems to
exist and the weird thing is that the Erie has a lot of vibrant villages along
the way, so you would expect some entusiasm. What was great was that we never
worried about finding a place to eat lunch. We stayed indoors each night, so I
have no feedback on camping. We chose that section, because of the predominance
of actual towpath there.
Do you have the Botzman book, 2008 edition of Erie Canal Bicyclist and Hiker
Tour Guide? We also had a handy spiral notebook guide that was quite handy until
it fell off somewhere near the end of the ride. I have seen nothing hinting of
GPS. The section we were on was great. Take Your Bike (about family rides in the
Rochester area) covers that segment. You might get it on Inter-Library loan to
see if there is anything of use to you.
Good luck!

I know it is "off the trail" but I am interested in riding the Erie Canal trail.
I haven't found any "good" sites or user groups for this trail. does anybody
have any suggestions? I did get the book that they have on their website for the
trail. However, it isn't as informative as the maps & books that I have found
for the GAP & C&O.
What I would really like to have is a GPS file that includes camping, water &
food so I can put it into my GPS.
Thanks
While we're on the subject of public meetings, I'm passing along this message I
received from Potomac Paddlesports concerning a public meeting Tuesday evening
on the establishment of a National Outdoor Center at Rockwood Manor Park on
MacArthur Blvd (not far from the entrance to Great Falls). Among other things,
the proposed center would have an on-site bike shop for people riding the C&O
Canal towpath. The carpool link below will also take you to other links
describing the project in detail…
Dear Jonathan,
I would like to follow up on my previous email regarding our proposed plans for
a holistic, environmentally friendly, and community-based outdoor center. MD,
DC, and VA residents are all encouraged to attend the Public Comment Meeting on
Tuesday, November 17th at 7pm to voice your opinions on the proposal.
The meeting will take place at 11001 MacArthur Blvd., Potomac, MD 20854, in
Brooke Hall of Rockwood Manor Park. (view map) Make sure to arrive early to get
a seat and so we can start the meeting on time.
In the interest of our environment and to avoid overcrowding the facility, we
suggest that everyone ride their bike or use public transportation wherever
possible. If you will be driving a car to the meeting, make sure to carpool with
your friends and family, and please consider using the Message Board we've
created to connect with others in your community to set up a carpool:
http://www.potomacpaddlesports.com/carpool/default.aspx
If you cannot attend the meeting, please send your comments to
terry.brooks@... and copy sunny.pitcher@....
Please direct any other questions to Melissa Rothstein at
melissa.rothstein@....
Thank you again for your vital participation, and we look forward to seeing you
Tuesday evening!
Sincerely,
Sunny Pitcher

I am not attempting to reopen the debate on wearing helmets or not wearing
helmets, as I think those who believe in how they ride will stay that way.
However, today my wife and I came upon a woman who fell over on the WMD RT and
was on her side for some time, including her head. I did not see the fall, but
she was down for some time. She finally got up and she said she was okay.
She did have a helmet on as we stayed with the two women until we felt the one
who fell was okay.
She has no idea what happen.

I stopped by yesterday three times to see the progress on J.
Helmstetter's new barn. I was neat to see it go up in one day. The
first shot was about 9:00 AM, 2nd at Noon and last at 5:00 PM. What a
great community effort.
Enjoy it the next time you ride up the Passage from Cumberland, Just
west of Cash Valley Road.
RIDE ON!!!

Grrrr....."Crusher run", not "Crush and run" when referring to aggregate.
"Crush and run" sounds like the 70's Denver Broncos or something. I wish
reporters would do some better research.
Sorry, personal hot button.

It sounds like a lot of money for something that that isn't all that bad and
won't have a big economic impact, except maybe with some very short term jobs.
I hope there is money in the pipeline for roll on/roll bike service on that line
between DC and Pittsburgh (and Chicago) nearer to Spring 2010.
