Hi Mauro,
Thanks again for your help... I did have one question about the anchor "mount" if that's what it is... the rope with a piece of wood and two end fittings.  How is it used?
I have spent the past two weeks buffing and sealing the hull and oiling the interior wood as well as polishing the topside too.  The boat looks GREAT!  I love having it here in the 3rd garage.  We'll get a lot of joy out of it.
I hope to see you around the RC sailing group sometime.  I'll let you know when we sail in B.R. also.

Take Care
Dale

Dale -

Perhaps I performed the moderator duties a little bit too efficiently,
but I have already taken him off the list per his request.

Oops! and Sorry! - you'll have to email him.

Sounds like you got a great little boat. :D

As an aside, when I was performing that task last night, I noticed
that we have mebers in this Group from as far away as Turkey!
Interesting bit of trivia, that...

What I would tell a customer, or sailor, or anyone, is what is the cost of replacement, versus the cost of failure.  IF THERE IS ANY QUESTION OF RIGGING, REPLACE IT.

Goes back to our sailing lesson protocol ... if you think you should reef ... you already should have.  God gave you gut feelings to keep you alive ... rationalizing them came later and results in the modern day phenomena known as the Darwin Awards.

I have a 16 and one of my shrouds is also slightly bent. I never really
considered it a safety issue. I've been sailing with it for over a year
and don't have any plans to replace it. That being said, however, I do
think it is a good idea to replace them all if you replace one.

Hadn't thought of that Steve, [not making a suggestion sight unseen].
It's a 16 and the kink isn't quite a kink, it's just slighty bent. Can't
even notice it when rigged. Again, when changing the cables on my
bicycle , I change both sides so the stretch stays the same.
That was primarly my question: If changing a shroud line, should you
replace them all ?

You didn't say which coast. I just finished up to the level 4
certification. If you check with Anacortes Yacht Charters
(Anacortes, WA), they have a learn and sail program , so that you can
it it all in a week. The sailing is in the SanJuan Islands, which is
absolutely beautiful. The water is deep, but somewhat sheltered.
The weather is fairly good and there is plenty of wildlife - seals,
whales, eagles, etc. They have nice boats that they keep in good
shape. Check out there web site, just search on Google.

My son also lives in Florida so I'm always running

I'll check out the site. I'm looking for a quality

Sounds pretty secure, Guys. You just might buy 2 or 3 8x12-foot polly tarps
and with a couple packs of WalMart quarter or half inch rope, wrap those
babies like a cacoon around your hull and rigging. Might avoid things like
gel coat scrapes and scratches from flying debris. An old mattress or two
under those wraps might not hurt either if such are available. And if you
are close to the coast, run a line from your boat to a door-knob in case of
floods.

Good luck. I think you'll do fine. Frances may veer one way or the other and
minimize its winds there. We'll all say a few words for you.
all best,

My cp-16 "hunts" on her anchor, and I'm wondering what I can do to stop it.
By "hunt" I mean that when I set the hook and pay out the appropriate scope,
the boat has a tendency to wag to port and starboard behind her anchor. Am
I doing something wrong here? Not enough scope? I typically anchor with
the rudder down and the tiller loose - should I be tying off the tiller? (I
would think this would increase the likelihood of the boat to sail at
anchor.) Should I raise the rudder? Or is this just normal given the
increased windage of a sailboat over the smaller powerboats I'm used to
anchoring?

Hi Bill -

Epiphany does that at times, too. If it's enough to be bothering me,
lashing the tiller over usually works to stop or slow it. Sometimes
all the way over, sometimes just a bit. Putting up the bimini usually
helps her weathervane better, and some folks use a "riding sail" to
stop the hunting. One other technique: at one end of your swing, drop
an anchor and all the chain attached to it on that spot, and snub it
off short.

Bill,

Boats dance the most at anchor when there is windage forward and drag
aft. Try raising the rudder. If that doesn't work, then see if you
can put a small riding sail on the backstay.

Kurt,

You have had way too much hurricane preparedness training this year. Good
luck to you and Epiphany for yet again, another go round.

I remember a few years ago several trip from G'ville to C'ston to tie my
Tartan down. Those trips never fit into the planning schdule but they are
definitely "gotta do's".

Take care, good luck,

Dear list,

Through some advice and looking at pictures, I realized that I had not been
running my genoa sheets the best way on my 1983 CP19.

Previously, I had the sail connected directly to the bow and ran the sheets
between the spars, through the eye-holes and to the cleats. Now I've added
an extension to get the sail up the to the level of the safety rails (and to
the top of the mast), and run the sheets outside the rails to the blocks on
tracks, then up to the winches and on to a set of new cam cleats I installed.

After only being out a few times though, a couple in strong wind, I've noticed
that where the sheets rub over the fiberglass, they have worn away relatively
significant grooves. This obviously can't continue, or pretty soon they'll
wear right through the deck. What do you folks do to prevent this?

Thanks,

Michael Hrivnak

A small sail off the boat's stern will help but you don't have a mizzen mast and
if memeory serves me right, a backstay to rig a sail to. Maybe a secure boom
and topping lift could be rigged to raise a small sail.

this high pressure system holds over top of us, it'll steer the storm
over Florida, like the models are now predicting. Wish I could share
the high, and drape some of it down over those Florida folks, to keep
Frances safely out at sea... :/

Or maybe a BIG kite flown from an aft corner. ;)

One other idea, Bill. Run a line from a stern cleat outside of your
stanchions, and snub it to the anchor rode. Let out a little more
rode, until your boat is balanced between the two lines, somewhat
sideways to the wind. I haven't tried this, but with some fiddlin', I
think it would work.

Bill: I've never seen a boat wag to some degree. I think it is just 'her' way of saying, "Golly, I'm happy to be here on the water!". Scuppers Stu

Or is this just normal given the
increased windage of a sailboat over the smaller powerboats I'm used to
anchoring?

Here is a great Catalina 22 Owner's Website with lots of ideas that
could be used on many other manufacturers and sizes of Sailboats.

I'm sure if you visit the site you will be impressed as I was and
walk away with some great ideas.

Dear ComPacters,

Thousands of people are flooding out of south Florida and already north Florida motels and hotels are full. Talked to a family in Tallahassee yesterday that had only a reservation for that day and could find nothing else until going further north and west to Alabama. I offered them lodging at my home but they were going to head further north.

The predicted track will travel the full length of Florida. and northward. Since Frances is hundreds of miles wide, it is wider that the state, and almost as long.  I am reminded of travel adventure writer, Richard Haliburton's last words as he sailed a Chinese junk across the Pacific trying to reach San Francisco for a World's Fair in the 1930's. A huge typhoon was bearing down on his small craft and the last anyone ever heard from him was this radioed message: HAVING A FINE TIME.  WISH YOU WERE HERE... INSTEAD OF ME.

That's the feeling for most of the people in Florida as this monster takes aim and tries to gut us. Everyone here will just do the best they can, but they would sure rather be somewhere else.

Nice chart, Kurt, but why are all those arrows pointing right at ME? Is
Mother Nature trying to tell me something? I may craw under the mattress and
overturned bathtub early just in case.
