Hello, given your interest in kites, I thought you might wish to know that
the Australian Kite Assocation CD-ROM, "Australian Kiting", is about to go
out of print. We now have fewer than 200 copies left of the CD, which costs
AUD $20 plus postage.

This was the first, and is still to our knowledge the only, kiting CD in
the world. Covering the first 20 or so years of the AKA, it contains the
first 200 issues of the newsletters and magazines of the AKA, as well as a
collection of plans, photos and material on using and making kites in
schools and workshops. The CD has already been reprinted once, but we will
not be repriting this disc again. Should you choose not to purchase the
current disc you will have to wait until at least mid 2000 for the next,
updated edition.

Proceeds of the sales of the CD have been used by the AKA to promote kiting
in Australia. We have helped fund kiting events, subsidised the cost of
membership in the AKA and have even assisted kitefliers travelling overseas
to compete at internation kite events.

If you would like to buy a copy of the CD, please go to
http://www.srl.rmit.edu.au/peterbat/cdform/form.htm for a copy of the CD
order form.
The CD costs AUD $20 plus postage ( $2.50 inside Australia and $7 elsewhere ).

Johnna had a beautiful baby boy on January 10th
Keenan Patrick Doyle, born 8lbs. 4oz., 21" tall

He is a great baby, sleeps more than his sisters ever did. Devin (4) is great
with him and Haley (15 months) is really good to. Which was a nice surprize.
She beats on her older sister so much it was nice when we saw how gentle she
was with the baby.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Miniature Extended Wing Cody
			 Kite Building Workshop ...and Funshop

When: Sunday, March 21th at noon
Location: Howard Johnson's just off 95.

We will build a miniature Extended Wing Cody Boxkite with
a wingspan of approximately 10". This workshop will take
approximately 2-3 hours of building time with small parts and
a razor blade so it is only recommended for kids over 13 (smile).

The finished kite will weigh approximately 1 gram and can be flown
indoors by waving your hand. It nearly floats on air!

I need to buy materials, so the cost will be: (Spectators free.)
$8 if paid before March 7.
$10 if paid before March 14.
$12 if paid on the day of the workshop.

All building materials will be provided. Optional: bring a shoebox
(4x11x9" or a larger box) to transport the finished kite, and maybe
a drink or snack.

Seating is limited. Interested? Contact me:

At the end of the Arch Workshop, the subject of the ConnectiKITER Fight Song
came up. Nobody could remember the words, and nobody had a copy with them.
Here it is, from my old copy, which is, of course, on Peg Yellow paper:

ConnectiKITER Fight Song
(For Voice and Kazoo Band)
(Tune: Notre Dame Football Song)

ConnectiKITERS are we,
Off on a Kite-flying Spree!
Deltas, Train Kites, Stunt and Plain Kites,
ConnectiKITERS, YEAH ! ! ! !

ConnectiKITERS are here,
We'll screw it up, never fear !
Kite lines tangled, nerves all jangled
ConnectiKITERS, YEAH ! ! ! !

ConnectiKITERS have fun,
Come snow, come bright summer sun,
We will be there, - - WATCH THAT TREE THERE ! ! !
ConnectiKITERS, YEAH ! ! ! !

For occasions like Black Ships, Smithsonian and similar events where we are
competing.

So glad to hear that someone had a copy still!! Although I wrote it,
I couldn't have remembered all the verses if you had paid me. It was
written in the days when we flew at Sherwood Island Park all the
time, and we sang it for Channel 8 at Bradley Point Park during some
Festival or other! Thanks for the memories!

Subject: The Arch Project club challenge
Date: Mon, 22 Mar 1999 11:11:43 EST
From: SanTsom@...
To: info@...

Greetings,
Jewels Of The Sky President Dick Bell has issued a challenge to all kite
clubs
to see which club can make the most sails for the 1999 arch. They are
sure to
make dozens so if you want to take up this challenge, you better get
started.
Last year South Jersey Kite Flyers made the most of any club with 24
sails.
Lets see if your club can top that. You can find the plans for the arch
at:

http://members.aol.com/SanTsom/index.html

These are easy kites to make, even for the first time maker. Last year
we got
239 sails from all over the world. After winning first place in the
cooperative category, we donated it to the AKA auction. It was sold for
over
$1,100! It's a great way to have your club represented at the 1999
National
AKA Convention and help AKA too!

Thanks
Terry Sansom

I just got back from the Smithsonian fly in Washington DC. Just a scant few
people from "up here" showed up including Gary and Maggie Engvall and Alice
Hayden. This was my first time to this event so I'll give you my impressions.

The narration of the event was excellent with a good sound system. There were
a few tents including a concession stand, a display of the Wright Flyer Kite,
and strictly no kite vendors. The field is huge and surrounds the Washington
Memorial (under repair) with views of the White House and Jefferson Memorial.
Cool. I took a bunch of pictures, but mostly of the kites (smile).

This is mostly a "single line" event which is focused on kite design and kite
building. I took Bruce's suggestion (from NEkite) and got there early. I
flew a little bit to settle in, then I walked past the line of people waiting
for judging. That's an amazing sight because there was such a wide variety of
kites being entered in so many categories.

Gary could probably do this justice because he was out there judging on the
field, but let me describe a few... there was a huge scout kite, a patchwork
masterpiece, a "Wallace and Grommit" kite, a clear painted kite following the
theme of "looking back", an airplane kite, a disney totem kite, a cody with
counter-rotating spinners inside, a string of Circoflexes, a big red Cody
variant, hand painted kites, a clear x-wing fighter, a flowing delta with
tails, and much more.

Many demonstrations took place thoughout the day with the announcer clearly
explaining, pointing out details, and telling stories. There were Rok battles
and awards were handed out at the end of the day.

One last note... at the end of the day I saw a kid trying a stunt kite for the
first time on a crowded field where he hit a spectator. There was no injury,
but it may have helped if there were lessons available (there weren't) or a
dual line field (I didn't see one). I took this seriously and dragged the
father, mother, and kid into an open area and gave them a flying lesson.

I flew my kites,
I bridled their kites,
I taught a few stunt kite lessons,
I gawked,
I took photos,
and had a really great time.

-Glenn

Well, not really, but it made you look. <grin>

Actually, this combines 2 events, Smithsonian & Fort Worden. Everywhere I go,
I fly the colors of the ConnectiKITERS (yellow & red). Every time I do I get
comments from oldsters from all over the country, people who remember when
ConnectiKITERS came to convention 'in force', in 'uniform', and generally
stole the show with how much fun we were having.

Maggie and I have declared ConnectiKITERS as our 'home' club, and we
constantly hear the same question when we are out and about: "Whatever
happened to the ConnectiKITERS?" We always assure people that the club is
quite alive and quite well and quite active, just not 'present' at conventions
quite like it used to be.

And then we always receive the same comment, from people like Charlie Sotich,
and Bob & Jewel Price: "Make sure you say hello to Vic & Bernie Walton, and
Jim & Peggy Burnett for us."

The Waltons and the Burnetts and the folks who got to play with them left an
indelible impression of fun in the minds of people who have been at almost
every AKA Convention. It is always a thrill to be associated with them. It is
a high mark to strive to live up to, but I am ready to try.

Anybody want to start a new kazoo band?

Please start looking for yellow & red stuff (hats, safety vests, kazoos,
anything) that we can get for everyone and wear at Muncie. Maybe Dave or Jim
can share the pattern for the crazy hats ? ! ? ! Every ConnectiKITER in a
yellow & red crazy hat - this could be BIG !

Thanks to the Waltons & the Burnetts for giving us this legacy to live up to.
(I think. <grin>)

I received a request from the Killingworth PTO. Each year the school holds
a Festival of the Arts for 550 student grades K-5. They would love to have
someone there to teach kids how to make kites and asked if we could help.
The Date is Friday May 21, at Killingworth Elementary---sessions run from
9:30 to 2:30 with 30 minute teaching sessions to no more than 20 students
per session. The PTO will pay for supplies and provide you with the space
you require. There is also a craft fair from 4 to 6:30 where I believe you
can sell your stuff (although I'd have to confirm) If anyone is interested
please let Laura Martino know e-mail Laura_Martino@.... Thanks

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to say thank you and acknowledge everyone for turning out for
media day for the Middlesex Hospital Sound Winds Kite Festival, May 15th.

Kudos to Julie Winkle of the Middlesex Hospital for arranging the radio & TV
time. Thanks to Julie for meeting me at the radio station and being backup.
The info came in real handy. I bet you guys thought I had that number
memorized... Julie kept feeding me what I needed to know over my shoulder...

Thanks to Jim Burnett for taping the radio show. Now I can listen to it and
think of all the things I *should* have said....

Thanks to Alice Chittendon, Ray Gruzas, Jim Burnett, Dave Lombard, Larry
Zaleski, Jim Christiansen, and Cheryl Lucas for coming out and performing for
the TV cameras. I think we got us a convert !!!

Hiya Jack Benas. Better late than never. It was good to see Jack come out for
the show.

And especially thanks to Laura Martino for being the guiding force behind all
of this. This is gonna be an event that will set a new standard for kite
events in the northeast, largely because of Laura's vision.

Thanks everyone.

Hello all.

This is the one message I have been practicing in my mind for some time now.
Typically now that the time is here, I am at a loss as to just what to say.

My dad passed away this past Tuesday morning (April 13, 1999). He was 94.
While it was not unexpected, it did catch us by surprise.
(doesn't it always)

As you are all aware he had been dealing with congestive heart failure and
it finally got the upper hand.

During the past few months our discussions focused on the many times you
were all able to share with him. He remembered all of the email on his
birthday, the good food at Harkness, The Grandeur of many kites in the sky.
I remember all of that, plus your kindness to him.

There are no formal services planned. However, there will be a reception a
105 Church Street Harwich, MA On Sunday April 18th, 1999 (2:00-5:00 pm) for
those who would like to join us in celebrating his life in the manner he
enjoyed most . . . a party.

Our phone is: 508.432.0549. EMail: lcleaves@....

best regards and thanks to you all

Without every having met your dad, it is clear that his was a life lived

We can expect death, but we're never really prepared for the actual

Ray, the ConnectiKITERs as a club is supporting the event. So you don't need
to contact Laura individually. I'm just not sure if we need some
identification to get in and park for free. The Burnetts and Lombards have
had a number of meetings with Laura (our distance and work doesn't allow for
Mark & myself to attend meetings after work in Connecticut). Actually, a
number of us are talking about camping overnight at Hammonasett St Park and
having a ConnectiKITERs (informal) night fly. Only campers are allowed in
the park after dark. It should be a hoot.

It will be a hoot if it happens. Count us in to camp if it is possible.
At the last meeting it was stated that the campground wouldn't be open
that weekend. Then it was thought that it might open that Sunday. Cheryl
Lucas was going to make some calls and try to nail down whether it would
available or not.

Keep your fingers crossed.....

I have contacted the Hammonasset State Park camping area and they are not
openning until May 21st (despite the State's web site indicating 5/15 as
their openning date). Does anyone know about alternative lodging in the area?

I congratulate Glenn on a job well done! It is great that he was able to fly
a kite each and every day during our 1st National Kite Month this April!
Maybe others will join him next year in April 2000! Great Job Glenn!!

I continue to fly a different kite each day during National Kite Month.

Last week I was interviewed by the Boston Globe and today I was photographed
by the Woburn Advocate newspaper. As an example, today I flew the Barracuda
Rokkaku, a Jeff Howard Fighter, and a stack of three 8’ Flexifoils on 125’
lines.

Only two days left... the wind gods have been favorable. I've flown every
day and kept a log of what/where/who/when.

It's been a ton of fun too.

Happy Kite Month!
Glenn
As a part of National Kite Month, I've challenged myself to fly a
different kite every day for the entire month. I'm trying to fly in public
places in a variety of locations... but each day I want to fly a different
kite.

I do this both to raise awareness about kiting and to have fun!

So far, I've flown every day since April 1, that's 7 days in a row. I've
flown single line, dual, and quad. Indoors and outdoors. Light wind
and heavy wind.

What do you think? Can I make it?

Can you help me? I may need to borrow a kite because OPK is a
particularly important brand to fly. And I'd like to borrow a 3-line kite
if anyone has one (and no jokes about cutting one off my Rev!)
And I'd like to ride a buggy one day.

I'll have to write an article about it.
Happy Kite Month!

National Kite Month Update

National Kite Month is off to a *great* start!

Between Friday, Mar. 26 and Sunday, March 28, National Kite Month was
promoted in 31 television news markets -- all major networks including ABC,
CBS, and NBC. Coverage ranged from 30 seconds in Milwaukee to 3 1/2
minutes in Phoenix, AZ. Fifteen different cities saw Kite Month news.
There were morning shows, Eyewitness News at 5 pm, Evening News at 6 pm,
and Prime Time News at 11 pm.

And that was just in the first two days!!

Over 100 local festivals and events have now registered as part of the NKM
project and more are being submitted every day. Remember, there is no cost
to register an event. Simply go to the KTAI (KiteTrade.org) or AKA
(AKA.Kite.org) web page and wait for the NKM window to pop-up.

We also have been informed that The Maryland International Kite Exposition
will receive national airplay on the Today Show. We are looking for more
network coverage of our other larger events.

If you haven't visited the NKM web page, please drop by to look over the
list of events, resource materials, kite plans, festival tips, and a large
collection of educational materials.

All of this -- the local events, the news coverage, and the web information
-- is a fantastic showing for only the first week of Kite Month --
especially considering that the project was pulled together in less than
seven weeks. Congratulations to everyone who has helped make this a success.

David Gomberg
NKM Steering Committee

PS - the most important thing you can do to support the effort is to
organize a small local event and include it in the NKM calendar. Check out
the web page to see what kinds of support you will get.

<< everyone who gets this and goes to Buck's County Kite Day would do us one
big favor: Find the Queen of Kites, and give Bernice Turner a big hug and let
her know we wish we could be there. >>

Gary & Maggie,
Bernice says hi. It kind of made her day. That and the sun and the wind
(there was wind this year...though blistering sometimes). Anyway, I was
sitting talking to her when Mike Van Meers came up to give her your hug.
After he left, she wispered to me that she didn't want to hurt his feelings,
but several people had already done the same. I told her not to worry; I was
even going to give her your greetings and a hug from you. I just wanted to
get my hug in first and we just hadn't gotten to Gary & Maggie's hug yet.

One of the neat stories that followed was Bernice then said that kite fliers
liked to hug. I said that we were all one family. Bernice agreed. I went
on to note how at Smithsonian and MASKC it is great to see everyone we hadn't
seen over the winter months and that I missed them when it is so many months.
Bernice said that was why the Great Open Invitational Internation Peanut
Butter Cookie Bake-Off and Kite Fly began. A group of kite flying friends
were sad at the convention because it meant that they wouldn't see each other
until the next Spring. Olan, who I now know would do almost anything for
peanut butter cookies, offered to organize a November fly if the women would
bake him peanut butter cookies. It was agreed to and a great event was born.
This story went to my heart as it is the great thing about the
ConnectiKITERs. Good Food; Good Kites; Good Friends.

See ya all in the skies.

I just got a request to do a kite demo and
building workshop for a group of Girl Scouts
in Hartford on Saturday the 15th.

I explained that Soundwinds was that day and
it is very unlikely someone would be available.

However, I would be remiss in not putting out a request.
If you can help, let me know and I will put you in touch
with the contact.

Thanks!

I'm finally getting to finish my string of kites, and noticed that I'm short
some of the 3 inch dacron or whatever for the spar pockets. There was only
enough for 7 of my 14 kites. If you could stick a foot or so in an envelope
and send it to me, t'would be appreciated, or tell me what I might use
instead and where to find such.

Trying to have this done for Soundwinds
Thanks
