Folks,

At the KONE Annual meeting a few weeks ago, Ed Webb brought along a photo
album containing many photos that were taken in the late 1980's and early
1990's. I must confess that I didn't know many of the people in the photos.
But, it got me to thinking that kiting, as with life, is a progression of
people coming in to and out of your life.

I looked at the faces in the photos and saw the same enthusiasm that we see
today on the faces and in the spirits of our current flyers.

Jef Cleaves asked for copies of some of these photos as they brought back
memories for him. Ed provided the photos to me and as I was scanning the
photos in to make copies for Jef, I thought these photos too important to be
just put into a photo album somewhere and squirrelled away in a bookcase.

After seeing what Gary Engvall has been able to do with a photo gallery
website where he puts his photo collections, I followed his lead and posted
these photos for all of you. As you place your mouse cursor over each photo
you will get a description of the photo as it had been originally annotated
by Eddie. Please go look at them and see if it stirs your memories the way
it did to Jef and others at our meeting as they poured over the nostalgic
history of New England kiting that was laid out before them.

The photos are at:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=251773&a=1871327

If you have more historical photos that you feel should be included in this
collection, please send me Email and we can make arrangements to make this
happen.

The photo's are/were fun. I haven't thought of many of the folks for a
long time.

When I told Joanne she was on the web she said "Oh no!"

By the way, we were living in Jamaica Plain then, and not Jamaica...

Thanks for the memories...

Hi everyone;

At the upcoming March 4,5 workshops, I offered to make available original
ConnectiKITER Banner Templates that people could copy if they brought
posterboard to trace them onto.

David Stern wisely asked how many pieces of posterboard were needed to do the
job. The answer is: 2.

The longer answer is that the banner has 3 different pieces, and with hem &
seam allowances, requires a template layout area of 19" by 54". Posterboard
is 22" x 28", so two pieces will do the job.

Hope to see everyone there.

PS - Thanks a bunch for your help!
Hello,
I am looking for a contact in Connecticut to talk to about doing a
demonstration of the different types of kites. I would like to do a
fundraiser for our Dollars for Scholars
Scholarship Foundation. Our middle school is located on a hill wtih the high
school below. I think it would be an ideal place for a Kite Fest....and
would love to encourage the sport. I have always been a fan but have somehow
missed out on pursuing the sport. I think there are a lot of us out there.
Please let me know if you could help out. Thank you for your time. Please

To whom it may concern,
LAST week Russ Mozier called me and asked if he and his wife Pat could
attend our workshop Mar.4/5 and I said "Of course". Well it would have been
nice if I told someone else so they could mail him any information. I told
him he could pay there. As far as the price goes please let me know what it
is and I'll forward it to him. Also I did not get the information on what to
bring for that weekend....would it be possible to send it out egroup or
maybe it could be faxed to me at 860 633 2561.

For the information on Russ M. please call me as I did not want to put that
on e-group.

I apologize for doing this 9 days later than he called !!!

Thank you for ALL your help.

Sincerely,
peggy burnett

Hi everyone;

Photos are up from our latest escapade into the wild world of kite flying. We
went to St. Placide, Quebec, Canada for a kite festival on the frozen lake.
We were fortunate enough to be part of the crew for the Mega Ray, the largest
kite in the world.

Susan,
This is a bit short notice. There is an annual kite event going on that weekend
in Hampton Beach, NH. However, I will mention your inquiry at the
ConnectiKITER's workshop this weekend and post it to their bulliten board.

That said, there is a terrific resource on the web. The American Kiteflier's
Association has a book called KITES IN THE CLASSROOM which I have recommended to
many a teaching friend or scout leader. It explains some of the basics of wind
and flying dynamics (in simple terms) and has plans for really-simple to
less-simple kites. It is free to browse on the web or you can call and pay $6
for a bound hard copy. The url is: http://www.aka.kite.org/
To to the table of contents and scroll down to publications. The one you want
is KITES IN THE CLASSROOM.

good luck,

The weekend went swimmingly. It was a terrific team effort. The most obvious
people were

Chef Jim who fed us 3 times a day and in between plied us with coffee, tea,
juice 7 soda.

Gary Engvall with his rok presentations

Paul Berard took many of us through his mini-eddy trains

Mildred Hayden who presented concepts in Hapi Coats

Steve Ferral who closed The Kite Studio for the weekend so he could come and
help us all with supplies.

I lead the Dragon Kite and Helix Line Junk classes.

But there were even more people working behind the scenes. The was:

Dave Lombard who handled registrations

Carole Lombard who helped with registration and hospitality

Peg Burnett who made all the arraignments with the hotel and vacuumed and
picked-up after all of those who missed their scrap bags.

And all of you: about 40 all told; from our newest member Duane to our founding
members like Peg & Jim. You came participated, built kites, helped us and each
other, shared your tools and good cheer.

There were an astounding number of Roks, Dragons, Helix Line Junk and mini-Eddy
Trains built in just 2 days. Good work.

thanks,
Alice Hayden

Dave as a presenter I would have to say, the thing I liked best
would be the sharing of ideas, philosophies, technics, materials, tools,
experiences, kiting, food, and most of all the warmth of good
friends. Interacting with the attendees is where I have the most fun, I
enjoyed sense of "where all in this together and we can get it done". The
thing that most amazed me about the weekend was the number of people that
where working on there kites very late into the night on Saturday.
What I liked least. I'd have to say it would be the hotel. Not
that I didn't enjoy it time spent there, I just figure since we weren't
there to fly anyway that we might try to find a quieter more restful
venue, maybe a someone out there knows of a church, or club type facility
that would have addequit facilities (the place doesn't need to have rooms
as long as the lodging is real close buy).
What suggestions do you have? Do the one mentioned above ,then
have an presenter from outside the area come in to give us a fresh
perspective ( not that I'm tired of hearing Gary I just like him better
when he is attendee!!!).
Would I attend again? Only if I can be a presenter again, and be
named the official workshop neck masausse.
As for suggestions I only have just one , I think we should have
more breaks for food!!!!

Dave,
The Workshop was excellent. The Presenters did a fabulous job. Chef
Jim out did himself.

The only improvement that I need, is a way to add several more hours to
the day.

The workshops were informative and all of the presenters went out of their

Can't think of a thing except maybe some more space. Maybe we could

Absolutely!!! Give us the time and the date and we'll be there.

As an attendee at the retreat, I would like to tip my hat to all the
presenters, organizers, CHEFS, and creators that were there. A lot of kites
were completed, many were well on their way, and there was even a completed
Hapi coat. I can't wait for the opportunity to go fly Daffy. My dragon's
hem (all 120 feet of it) is done, now I just have to applique this thing....
I look forward to seeing all of those completed Rok's in the battles up at
Soundwinds in May. Daffy will be there!

The only thing I would improve would be to have more space, but beggars can't
be choosers.

I really liked having Steve there to be able to buy more parts as needed.
Really took a lot of pressure off not having to find all my own stuff in
advance...after all, this is supposed to be "Just for the Fun of it".

Thanks again to everyone for such a great weekend!

Dave, It was a great weekend. I liked all of it. It was my first foray
into the world of kitemaking. I couldn't take it all in. I made a Rok &
Paul's mini-train and that was what I wanted to do. I came away with lots
of patterns. I made some new friends along the way & got to know some of
you better. Best, was the kitemaking skills I learned. Least, was the
hotel. I didn't have trouble with the noise but it was not cleanest place I
have stayed in. I was glad I had my slippers to keep my feet off the
carpet & floors in my room. I checked the sheets carefully. I would
attend another weekend. To take time off just to work on kites was great.
I don't have any real ideas for future plans but once a year or even every
other year would be good. Are you happy with the success of the weekend?
Thanks to all of you who made the weekend so successful. And CTkiters do
like to eat. Great job, Jim, and his helpers. Jean Ann Moore

The workshop was a great event. I actually finished my basic ROK (sans
Snoopy) and even got a chance to put it in the air for 10 minutes before
swimming practice. (I coach our Milford Special Olympics team). Silver
Sands was extremely blustery, only put up about 60 ft of line. Kite
tracked great "right out of the box". Thanks Gary for good directions.
Thanks everyone for a good weekend, look forward to another.
We do need more workspace for a gang like this though.
Helene and Kris say hi to all, sorry they couldn't stop by.

Several people asked if they could get ConnectiKITER's Workshop badges with
their names (like the presenters and BOD were wearing).

I will place an order the end of the week. The badges are $4.50 a piece. Let
me know.

The weekend was really great; great food, great projects and great presenters and great people all around. We'll be displaying our projects at our meeting this Sunday and flying them at our fly afterward. We're really glad we decided to come and thanks again for letting us come on short notice. Now that we're members we'll be the first to register for next years retreat. The only thing we would have liked to see more of was layout and cutting space, maybe next year you could use some of the hallway.
